  • Warning: Implosion Hazard. Evacuating an acrylic chamber, and observing that the air in the balloon expands to fill the available space, unless the balloon has size limitations! Testing a food carton for leaks.

another humble gold mine of a channel. I hope you come back to RUclips some day. cheers and thank you for the videos!

So was I. Out of three similar containers (the other two were for milk), only one did not leak, and consequently burst where the folds are at the top. Since it was a one litre size, the top of the carton was not centered in the picture, and that clip ended up on the editing room floor. At least the molasses container ended up being crushed at the end.

It depends on how determined you are. As a minimum, you will need special pumps with short, large diameter connections to the chamber. The construction materials should be glass, stainless steel or other material that doesn't act like a sponge, AND can tolerate a system bake before starting. The acrylic chamber and long, small diameter tubing used above, does not even come close to the requirements for UHV. As mentioned at approximately 1:50, the base pressure was about 1/10 atmosphere.

Yes, sonic devices in the chamber are coming, but I don't want to drill any holes for power leads, and it's taking me a while to put together a battery-powered controller for an electric bell, which will include a "transient voltage suppressor" to protect the 555 and the power transistor. And, no, the vacuum will not be 100%.

I plan to make more, but I don't know when. Thanks for asking.

Are you going to make more videos?

It can be very close to 100% with the correct equipment and procedures, but you don't need UHV to have fun. Since the topic is too large to fit here, I recommend the Wiki pages for Ultra-high vacuum and Gas dynamics as a start, then "belljar.net" if you are interested in building your own system.
