I am a veterinarian and my first impression upon seeing the cow was that she was already in the end-stage of this disease (most likely bacterial pneumonia but possibly viral). She was emaciating, dehydrating, and becoming moribund. She was in all likelihood past the point of being treatable absent being in an intensive care environment. Perhaps your cattle caretakers could be taught to look for early signs of pulmonary illness (any discharge from nose, coughing, depression) so that treatment can be initiated earlier. You did well by putting her down. Best of luck in the future.
I agree wholeheartedly, with your suggestion! Anyone in charge of a flock, herd, etc. of animals should be knowledgeable of warning signs and act quickly (especially in a group, there can be a risk of possible transference with some diseases, and with the worst case scenario of losing a herd/flock, etc.). Things are good, when they're good.😉 I believe that Ruben takes the happiness & welfare of all animals in his care seriously. I honestly don't understand lack of action or alerting by the hired help (it's "basic"!), but I feel badly for Ruben himself -- he deserves nothing now, but support. This is tough. Again, I appreciated both, your knowledge AND supportive suggestion!😉 [Well, I guess I needed to talk.🙄]
While cattle carer training and awareness is always important, if I’m not mistaken this particular illness is characterized by sudden onset. Once the cow is infected, it progresses rapidly and is almost always fatal. I’m so sorry, Ruben, family and staff. I know this happened 2 months ago, but the absence of a beloved animal that has been lost is always felt.
RUclips itself often deletes or loses posts, it’s common but I forget what the explanation was. I’ve had it happen several times on other channels. I don’t think Ruben would have had reason to do that.
Ruben, you are so wise and loving. This pain is the price that is paid for caring about others. The only remedy for death, is life. Focus on her calf. That baby will love you back. I am a physician and one of my mentors said, sometimes all we can do is love them. Do that, and you have done your best. Ruben, it is very clear that you always do your best, a beautiful thing indeed. Thank You for setting a fine example.
I agree Gunships. It would be productive and interesting to contribute to a project(s) that one can see. Many not-for-profits have lost their way and are now "money churning" entities that spend little on the people and projects that need it the most. No doubt that Ruben's family is doing "OK" but they employ many workers and have access to many people that could use thoughtful and productive assistance that Ruben and his family could direct.
Hello Ruben! I’m from Phoenix, Arizona, USA 🇺🇸 I stumbled across your page a couple weeks ago and absolutely fell in love with your filming and your naturel and effervesence way that you with such grace and ease demonstrate with all your beautiful creatures. I wish I had a Cindy to be my sister. In a world as chaotic as we live in today, it’s a gift to be able to come across such living beauty. Thank you for posting impactful, inspirational, heart warming messages of love that you give with each new bit of filming. Thank you for being such a brillant light in this world.
So sorry for your loss, Ruben. You can tell you really have a love for your animals ❤ Thank you for showing us your animals and your country. It is beautiful 😍
You have a special talent looking after all the animals with so much care. Cindy is so special. Showing people these caring acts is teaching them to look at animals differently . I love your programme. Kind regards from South Africa
Cows can actually be just like lap dogs. If you give them your time, they will eventually love you back. Then they will always give you tons of love. Its adorable.
I could easily see the pain you were experiencing to lose this animal. You have such a tender heart and allowing us to see that makes your videos so real, in both the good times and the sad.
I grew up with cattle and developed such an appreciation of them. It does my heart good to see how kind and compassionate you are as a farmer and caretaker for your land and animals. I'm so sorry for your loss. I think all of us watching this are probably in tears, but know you did the most humane thing for her. Please keep us updated on the little calf. I'm rooting for the little one.
I'm so sorry for this loss, Ruben. Cows can be like big puppies. She looked sweet. Poor little calf. You tried and did what you could and you didn't let her continue to suffer till the infection took her down. Euthanasia is hard, but it can show some of the deepest compassion and very often love in humanity.
This video brought tears to my eyes. You are doing Gods work on your farm. The kindness and compassion you show to all the animals is so very touching. ❤
Reuben, your mom definitely gave you the gift of compassion. It is always difficult making the decision for the last act of kindness, but it is compassionate, loving and dignified. Thank you for being that strong leader and caregiver.
Thank you for sharing this difficult side. This was very sad to see but she did look like she was struggling and am so grateful you had such compassion for her.
Ruben, your emotional sensitivity is your strength. The animals are so privileged that you exist. Your loving care and compassion are an example how mankind should relate to animals. I felt the pain watching this and cried but know that you did the best under the circumstances. God bless you. 🙏
I'm so sorry Ruben. I lost one of the best animals (feline) I ever met in 2021. The loss of Cosima caused me months of grief. She is was one of a kind. She decided to leave beginning in the night, so I was not able to get her to a vet, although she was scheduled to be put down later that morning. Seeing her go broke my heart. I rescued her when she was half-frozen and she spent seven wonderful years with me. It is obvious, you have great compassion for your animals. You are a good and gentle spirit. Is there no formula that you can give to her calf to help him grow? Greetings from Kingston, New York.
The man has the looks of a model and the heart of a saint!!! His beauty goes deeper than just the outside, which is wonderful to see!!! Many blessings to you and your animals Rueben.
I am so sorry you are facing this. Thank you for showing this aspect of ranching/farming, these will be memories that never go away. I can only imagine the grieving you will be going through with the calf!
I'm so sorry about having to put down the cow that broke my heart. I hope the calf is doing good. You have such a beautiful soul and I'm glad that you show the good and bad side of the farm.
This is so heartbreaking, Ruben really did try to save her. It's very touching and heartwarming to see how much Ruben cares for animals. Her pain is gone, I wish the best for her poor little calf 😢
I understand but this has me in tears. Her being sick and then her calf not wanting to leave her finished me.😢 You tried to help her and that's awesome even if it didn't go the way we wished it had. I know you did the right thing. Thank you for loving and caring for the animals the way you do. It's amazing. GOD Bless.💯❤️🙏
I literally live on the other side of the planet, Maine, USA.......never have I actually wanted to climb through the screen and give someone a hug.....until now! The other animals love will help you through this, and I hope our good wishes help you heal and feel better.
they really do comfort each other. they’re all gathered around her. cattle make special friends, too, as many animals do. my cat’s sister 🐈⬛ is gone and she’s been meowing loudly for 2 months or so. i really have to get her a friend. hope it works out. 🐈⬛🐈🌷🌱
Ruben, be at peace about how things with the down turned out. You did the very best for her but it was obvious from her initial condition that whatever was affecting her was already at a serious stage. I hope and pray that none of your other cattle get the same sickness. It was for the best that you put her down. She was suffering so badly. Be at peace Ruben, you are a very good hearted man. I am proud of you for your obvious love and compassion towards the animals you care for. God richly bless you for all that you do.
Thank you dear one for sharing the realities of this life in the wild. Thank you for generously sharing your love and emotional trials in this kind of work. I am a fan of your work and videos. Big cyber hug for you and those that care for these animals you serve.
It is so, so difficult to put an animal down. I had no idea of the pain and trauma of doing so until I had to see my dog, who was the being I loved the most in my entire life, be sent away. You are a very good man Ruben. Many people who work with animals just see them as a commodity.
All of us how love animals are deeply moved by this video. It is the painful side of being caring and building relationship with those creatures. I have experienced this too many times. I always say "no more", but then we have more animals, and in the big picture, they give us so much happiness that the pain of loss fades over time. takeCare
Yes, that is sad, poor thing. Sometimes that is what has to be. The poor girl was having such a hard time breathing. I hope she is somewhere beautiful and peaceful, with lots of good grazing and some budding to hang out with. She can be a mom to the babies that are in the same place. She is a good mom. RIP sweet girl.
Thank you for sharing, Ruben. Your love for the animals is apparent. I get emotional when you talk about it. Sending ❤ from Dallas, TX. Please keep us posted on the calf.
I hope you never let getting big on RUclips change you. You are one of the purest RUclipsr out there. I'm so sorry it had to happen but she with no doubt had a great life with some awesome care givers
Oh Ruben, I'm crying along with you at the heartbreaking decision that you had to make. I have had to make the same decision for several of my pets at times when there was no longer an option, and it never gets any easier. Although this must have been a very difficult video for you to make, I am so glad that you did and shared it with us, because it shows the side of you that is the farmer, and not just the young man who shares his life with warthogs, meerkats and the beautiful Miss Cindy. I hope the calf is ok without it's Mum...I would love to know how it goes.
Ruben part of Loving animals and taking care of them they way you do is knowing that they are suffering and in pain and when there is nothing more you can do for them that you Love them enough to let them go. It is so very hard and heart breaking. I am sure she is looking down on you from Heaven saying “ He Loved me enough to let me go “ .
Ruben, the care and compassion that you showed for this cow was exceptional. You did your best; sadly, sometimes our best is just not good enough. I know you will be keeping a close eye on her calf...
So sorry for your loss. You are empathic. The world would be a much better place if more people were. Because you feel deeply, you feel the loss just as deeply.
I am so sorry. Both for you and the cow and calf. It's probably the worst part of having animals. I also get terribly attached and it never gets easier to end their misery. Absolutely, definitely the right call. Hopefully you were able to retain an earlier heifer from her. Good cows are worth their weight in gold.
Ruben, you are an incredibly special person and one of the few lights that shines brightly in a sea of dark humanity. I feel your pain. Sadness fills my heart as well. From Seattle.🐮🐮🐮
Sometimes the hardest decision is what's best for the animal. It's our responsibility as caretakers to put the animals well being first. So sorry you had to make such a difficult decision but you did the right thing.
Thank you for sharing such a difficult experience with us. it is a reminder of how precious life is and we shouldn't take our experiences for granted. You and your family are doing amazing work!
"Grief is the price we pay for love" - Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. You have such a great heart, Ruben, and epitomise care for your amazing family of humans and animals 💯 😍
Thank you, Ruben, for this very moving video. I appreciate the warning at the beginning as I recently had to put one of my beloved cats to sleep. Your videos are quite amazing and your compassion and care for the animals in your charge are inspiring.
Oh Ruben, I lost my cow Bridget after 14 years. She developed cancer and severe Lymphedema. At the end as she suffered and I had to make the same decision as you. I am so sorry for your loss. Even many months later, I get tearful thinking of her. I am so sorry for your loss.
I'm so sorry for your loss 😢 It is a very difficult to see an animal in pain and to make the decision to compassionately end their life; I feel your pain. ❤🌈🐮✨
oh.. that hurts my heart.. sparing a creature from suffering is associated with the suffering, with suffering.. with the knowledge that it is the best thing you can do for the creature... that These experiences don't pass you by without a trace, shows your empathy for, here the cow... beautiful and sad at the same time... by the way, you, with your channel, are my favorite documentary ;)... my little one every time journey, from Berlin Schöneberg, to Namibia, to farmer Ruben and his long-time roommates... and again, thank you very much for your kindness, letting us be part of your farm life ... thumbs up.. question; did baby cow survive, was adopted by another mom cow?
As an animal scientist that has researched with one of the world's best veterinary medicine schools, I appreciate your knowledge and sensitivity with your cows. Many people don't understand how much effort and care goes into caring for cows and other ranging animals. p.s. the land in Namibia reminds me so much of our California wilderness and the cows that range throughout.
Thank you so much for sharing this experience in your life. It really is important for us to realize how life and death and compassion and strength all go together.❤❤❤😢
Ruben, I’m sorry you had to put her down. I am fascinated with your life on the farm. It is certainly different than farming that I’m used to seeing. Other parts of Oregon look like desert, but not where I’ve ever lived.
Hi Ruben, sorry for the loss of one of your cows. It is the most humane thing to end her life and suffering if there is no hope of her getting better. Hopefully you can feed the calf Milk Replacer. In America they use that all of the time to supplement milk for calves when needed. Hope the best for her calf, keep us updated please. Your love for your animals, especially your Baboon Sister Cindy, is really amazing.
Real sorry Ruben. The cycle of life if tough for sure, especially when someone like you really cares and puts the animals well being first. It will be good to see the cafe grow up! 👍👍👍👍 Maine USA
Pragmatism plus deep emotional connection…indicative of a good farmer (and a good human being) keep up the excellent work both on the farm and in educating the world on here. 💪🏻
This made me cry 😢 you do gods work . Taking care of the animals in a way we wish we all could ! She’s in a better place . I look forward to more videos !
When we interact with animals we realise how lucky we are to be born a human. Poor creature can't talk generally have a short life yet they are always happy and live in the here. They teach us a lot about living. I lost my GR last year and I still can't get over it, i don't want to either. Its hard to let go of a loved one but they are special because they don't have any pretense like humans - love from India
I grew up on a farm in Licking Missouri, USA. It’s interesting to see that the basic things there and here are the same. Different diseases, but sometimes the outcome is the same. And you hurt like we hurt. The thing that we dare not think about is if this will happen with Cindy some day. Be strong and God bless you Ruben.
You are amazing amazing soul. I’m sorry for both you and you cow. My niece was a vet. I know how much you care for animals cause I saw it in her, but she ended up committing suicide. All my best to you mate.
Rueben thank you for showing the 'otherside' of farming as well. Africa is not for sissies and snotsiekte really one of the many challenges a cattle farmer faces. I understand your empathy and salute you for exposing it like that. You live in a stunning part of Namibia by looking at your landscape. Whereabouts is it? Do you guys get to see any vultures in your part of the world?
I'm so sorry for the loss of the cow, especially since she's got a little one. I cried, too. I really appreciate how much you love the animals. It would be interesting to learn how cows catch disease from other animals and what do you do with the body of an animal that has died? Out of curiosity -- What about having guard dogs for the cows?
I am a veterinarian and my first impression upon seeing the cow was that she was already in the end-stage of this disease (most likely bacterial pneumonia but possibly viral). She was emaciating, dehydrating, and becoming moribund. She was in all likelihood past the point of being treatable absent being in an intensive care environment. I found on Wikipedia that it's called Bovine malignant catarrhal fever

Yes, great idea. ❤❤❤
Do it Ruben...
Yes! Great idea! Many blessings with your care of the animals Ruben!!
The way he touches, taks to the animals shows so much love. A unique, loving and humble man!! The world need more of his kind!!!

Im sorry Ruben, it’s always hard to have to make these decisions for our animals. Sending you a big hug. Thank you for trying to help her ❤
So nice to see a farmer see his cows as beings and not just livestock. Blessings Ruben. You are a gift to animals and us, the lesser beings. 😊
You do realise he’s a farmer, he’s not breeding cows to be pets
@@westaussie965 Be that as it may, Reuben has also talked about the relationship he has with the cows, who show him the love he shows them.
I could easily see the pain you were experiencing to lose this animal. You have such a tender heart and allowing us to see that makes your videos so real, in both the good times and the sad.
Just wait until you see the video where they are at the slaughter house. Oh wait🤔

It is always difficult making the decision for the last act of kindness, but it is compassionate, loving and dignified.
Thank you for being that strong leader and caregiver.
My mother has been dying for months and suffering every day. Your beautiful cow had a much better and humane end.
Am,so sorry , praying for you both

Yes, if you can't help an animal sick or suffering, you sadly have to put them out of their misery! So sad 😞!
I’m so sorry Ruben. It’s so hard to see animals in pain
what a kind soul this man has
Ruben is truly a wonderful soul. He's a blessing ❤
I'm so sorry about having to put down the cow that broke my heart. I hope the calf is doing good. You have such a beautiful soul and I'm glad that you show the good and bad side of the farm.
Ruben, you are such a special guy. You are a role model for humanity! Thank you
😢 the kindest thing you can do for any animal in your care is to send it on its final journey when necessary.
This is so heartbreaking, Ruben really did try to save her. It's very touching and heartwarming to see how much Ruben cares for animals. Her pain is gone, I wish the best for her poor little calf 😢
He’s a cow farmer. There’s no happy ending.
My life is very similar to yours and even in moments like this it seems a blessing to live with animals.
This is heartbreaking and holy work. Thank you for your compassionate giving of yourself to your animals.
Such compassion you show for these animals. Prayers for her calf.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I pray for the well being of the baby calf and the rest of your cows
My Mother was a Veterinarian. When it came time to put down the family dog... she choose to be the one. This brought back so many memories.
What we call sensitive material is everyday life reality . Her suffering was ended is a very humane way! God bless 🙏❤
I wish I could find a life partner who has a kind soul like this. I’ve been looking for a long time. 😂

I grew up on a ranch in South texas, that is the hardest thing to do! You did the right thing!
Such a sad scenario, but a routine part of running a farm even when the owners and workers care this much about their herd.

I'm so sorry, Ruben, that was so sad. I'm in tears watching it😢. It was so hard to see her so unwell, but you done what was best for her in the end. 😢
Rubin, I’m so so very sorry. Sometimes doing what’s right and merciful is the most painful. Sending love to you and all the animals💕

"Grief is the price we pay for love" - Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. You have such a great heart, Ruben, and epitomise care for your amazing family of humans and animals 💯 😍
Ruben, I’m so sorry for you. You have a kind heart.
Thank you, Ruben, for this very moving video. I appreciate the warning at the beginning as I recently had to put one of my beloved cats to sleep. Your videos are quite amazing and your compassion and care for the animals in your charge are inspiring.
Ruben, that was traumatic but also a very realistic reality in life. I appreciate you sharing this with us
Oh Ruben, I lost my cow Bridget after 14 years.
That’s very sad to see but happy to know that someone like you n your workers provided the best for the cow..
Real sorry Ruben. The cycle of life if tough for sure, especially when someone like you really cares and puts the animals well being first. It will be good to see the cafe grow up! 👍👍👍👍 Maine USA
Im not crying you're crazy 😭😭 that was so sad. im so sorry for your loss. ❤
I’m so sorry for your loss. I can tell you care very much.
Ruben, little by little I’m having awakening of what reality is and I hope cindy helps me a little bit
I learned a lot from this Ruben. Heartbreaking but real. You made the right call at the right time x
Can’t wait for this video just found your channel for a big time animal lover, I love your channel.
Does her illness warrant special precautions to avoid spreading her sickness to others ?
I grew up on a farm in Licking Missouri, USA. It’s interesting to see that the basic things there and here are the same. Different diseases, but sometimes the outcome is the same. And you hurt like we hurt. The thing that we dare not think about is if this will happen with Cindy some day. Be strong and God bless you Ruben.
My heart goes out to you Reuben, but you did the right thing.
Sorry for your loss. She had a great life in your hands for years❤️
His Cows are neglected. . Vet will see it's emanciated
Sad situation. I admire your compassion and excellent video skills
