I actually bought this car (auto dct) over the mazda 3 hatch, and honda civic hatch, and vw gti for a number of reasons. I feel the elantra gt did everything better than the competitors all for a better price. The VW would have given park assist and would have been down right faster. One of the biggest selling points for me was the experience of the interior, it has all of the feel that I was looking for from my beloved 2001 mazda protege5 + the best touch screen experience. It goes plenty fast and had what seems to be the best warranty you can get across the whole class as far as I can tell. I know I'm going to pay far less to maintain this korean car than most of my other options. Hope this helps someone!
The pro5 is a hard care to replace. I got rid of mine a decade ago and I’m still trying to find something that does everything as well as it. Just got an18 Elantra gt that seems like it might but well see
I just got me a Elantra GT sport with the 7 speed auto. Coming from a Genesis Coupe this car is amazing! The driving dynamics, the handling, and all the gadgetry surpassed my expectations. Also the stock exhaust sounds incredible! Hyundai really paid alot of attention to detail in this car.
I just bought one of these. From my recent car-buying experience, the Elantra GT Sport is a direct competitor to the Civic Hatchback Sport and Sport Touring. I felt the huge $6,200 (MSRP) chasm between the Sport and Sport Touring was very nicely filled in by the GT Sport without the tech package. Unlike the Civic Sport, but like the Civic Sport Touring, the GT Sport has: leather seating; keyless entry and startup; a full size infotainment display; cross-traffic and lane-change warning; full LED headlights and taillights; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; Sirius XM and HD Radio; dual zone climate. Plus it holds more stuff, it's more of a stealth hot hatch, and I prefer the DCT to the CVT. $22,100 = '17 Civic Sport (CVT) MSRP $24,350 = '18 Elantra GT Sport (DCT) MSRP $28,300 = '17 Civic Sport Touring MSRP
The i30n, which we are not getting in the US, is a GTI competitor for sure and maybe if these sell well stateside we will get the N model eventually. I personally like the styling of the Hyundai over the Golf and the pricing on the hyundai with the same features is much better. I just got rid of my 2nd VW thanks to diesel gate and I don't plan on getting another one but the Elantra GT Sport is definitely on my Radar.
MrMuggsly I've considered golf before then I saw how poor reliability was on those. Plus the (pre-face lifted) golf interior looks very basic/plain and doesn't look as luxurious as mazda3 or this Elantra gt. I've been eyeing this Elantra gt since it was announced. I might actually buy this over mazda3 which was what I was going to buy till I saw this, however the 3 drives better but has less space and luxurious features such as ventilated seats. If this hyundai drives as great as the mazda I might actually get the hyundai. I also looked at the civic hatch sport touring but that cvt killed it for me and hell no I'm not spending 35k for the R. So it's between this Elantra gt and mazda3. Which would you get?
I would have to drive a i30/Elantra GT sport but with the Mazda 3 being lower HP and not coming with android auto it's leaning very heavily towards Hyundai for now.
It would help because I like the styling of the 3 and they are actually " fun to drive" but after having Android Auto in my Wife's car I don't think I could live without it . I know there is a hack for their units to get it to work but I am not sure I feel like going that direction.
The GT Sport is not a GTI , but not being a GTI with a crappy reputation for reliability and service is a good thing. I think the GT Sport might be a better overall daily driver than the when all things are considered. Plus the warranty is the best out there, and the price is better. I am not as aggressive a driver as I once was, but I still enjoy driving a lot. I think this car will be fun to drive and easy to maintain without any of the quirky problems of the GTI or warranty hassles. Hyundai is becoming a favorite brand for me. I wish this car shared the dash with the sedan which is a much better design IMO.
I drove a GTI, put an offer in, and it fell through. ETA on another GTI manual was 3 months, so I went looking elsewhere. Found this car. Saved about $3K, got 0.99% financing, and I have to say I prefer the styling and the tech plus in Canada we get the awesome pano sunroof. I lucked out - I'm sure I would have enjoyed the GTI, but I'm loving my GT Sport manual and I saved a bunch of money and got a 5yr 100K warranty. Well done Hyundai.
This is a reasonably exciting entry into the hatchback segment, but is by no means a direct competitor to the GTI. Great for my niece for school, though. For some reason, Hyundai has decided to keep the i30N out of my hands. Veloster N? No thank you, I usually carry more than a messenger bag. As usual, the one car I want is the one I can't have. Hyundai is moving in the right direction, though.
David Yarber It saddens me to find out that they even tested the i30N in America! Specifically Death Valley and Leguna Seca! I believe with the absence of the Genesis Coupe and the Veloster being discontinued in the U.K. They are trying to make a case for the Veloster to fill a void... that they created. They are on a good path, and Veloster or not it'll be good to see a N model stateside... But I still want my cake and eat it too with the i30N.
lizardgreen2121 the new veloster is actually going to be based on the underpinnings of the new elantra gt, not the accent like the previous velosters were. I too am bummed about not getting the i30n, but I'm getting more excited about the veloster N! Probably going to buy it
I've yet to see a situation in which Hyundai holds back, they're always flying from the seat of their pants and pushing their capabilities. That being said, they probably wanted an N Hatch in North America but couldn't do it. I'm sure they'll still plug away at it and get to GTi refinement. However, getting to Type-R capabilities (which is probably what they're saving the 'N' for) is a harder act to follow. Honda's ace, is that even the most basic Civic, with a few affordable add-ons can become a track weapon. They all got that Type-R gene and if Honda needs to, they can easily dial-up the base performance to out-do any competition.
David, I completely agree with you. Veloster is a hideous car for me, Veloster N looks nicer but wheels are so ugly. But if we had i30N here I would have bought it right away (never buy new cars) It has everything I ever wanted. I loved GTI but when the warranty was out I spent $5000 on repairs and sold this that thing. Never want to go back that feeling when something always breaks. However, it was the most practical and fun car I ever drove.
Way back in 1976 I had a Mercury Capri II hatchback with the V6 engine. 109 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque mated to a 4-speed manual. The standard Elantra GT offers 161 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Wider track, roomier, better driving dynamics and the Elantra GT is 4 inches shorter overall, but with a 4" longer wheelbase. Better gas mileage and reliability, better warranty.
We got one of those Alexia’s for Xmas from my Daughter. It got plugged in on Christmas and has been up plugged ever since!!!! I told my wife if she uses it it should be unplugged rite after you use it! It has not been plugged back in even once!!!! I’m not a fan of VW. However we have had our 2015 Elantra Limited since it was new and it has been perfect in operation since day one. All it has needed has been 4 tires a new battery and front break pads. It has never needed the factory warranty, it now has just under 60K miles on it. Love my Hyundai!!!❤️😘
Alright... the pacing back and forth... that was awesome... Thinking on your feet, in a quandary, thinking..... and remaining in frame.... I'm a fan now... I love your brain droppings....
Kitted out this car is about $6000 less and insures for about $180 a year less (based on my own quotes). I'd say this is a perfect hybrid of low cost to own, fun driving, and premium features (the GTI doesn't offer remote start, witeless charging, ventilated seats, or a panoramic sunroof). It would be a perfect car if the load floor wasn't so high! Hatchbacks shouldn't have a higher load floor than the cargo floor, that defeats the appeal of a hatchback.
I just purchased the sport automatic with tech package for nearly $6,000 off MSRP. If you are considering this vehicle, check your dealerships! After a $9,000 trade-in with my old car, it only came to $16,100. Hell of a deal for the performance and amenities!
My son has a GTI and we went on vacation last week and he was parked next to an Elantra Hatch GT Sport for days. I could not help but compare the two cars side by side from all angles every time I walked by. I would buy the Elantra. That said, if Hyundai would up the game in performance just a hair, I would still pay the price.
I'm an Aussie with a slightly higher spec (same colour) DCT, Sliding roof & red coloured belts & other inner stuff. They did several hundred suspension setups here seeing we go from freeway/tollroads to rural to desert washboards. It's called i30 here & Elantra is & has always been the sedan (turbo available). Answer to your question re a really hot hatch, is the Hyundai N which is a blast! ps. I suffer from subscription fatigue also & suspect those pesky gadgets know all about me. [not much to know].
At more than 5k bellow the GTI for same equipment (in canada), I went for the Elantra GT Sport a couple of weeks ago (DCT, wife can't drive stick and I neede the added fuel economy). It is not a GTI-killer in terms of performance and driving dynamics. However it is a wonderful daily driver (take it from a guy doing 130km on commute EVERY SINGLE DAY) and you get plenty of fun the moment you put it in sport mode. At that price, with this amount of equipment and with this amount of fun, you don't have to feel ashamed for not getting a GTI, this is a car in it's own category. What would I do to make it a GTI killer? Cold air intake (take the same from the veloster turbo, it,s the same engine), new exhaust and probably stiffer suspension coils and you gain GTI-like performance for less than what you would pay in extra to get a GTI with the same equipment.
Hyundai already has a GTI competitor in the 271 hp I30N. But they are not bringing it to North America for reasons that baffle. My take on this car is that it's a notch below the GTI - but entirely worthy of consideration in that it does exceptionally well at the same mission statement (fun to drive and super practical) at a lower price point. Frankly, I'd take this over either the aesthetic train wreck that is the Civic hatchback or the underpowered (all sky, not much activ) Mazda 3. But it wouldn't displace the GTI for me.
As an answer to your question, yes I think it is a competitor to the GTI, and I say that as an owner of a '16 GTI. It may not handle quite as sharply, and 0-60 a bit slower, but there isn't a night and day difference, and if Hyundai would bring the N it would likely beat a base GTI. However I guarantee you can save minimum 3 grand buying the Hyundai (loaded GT Sport) versus a comparably equipped GTI, and likely quite a bit more than that since VW dealers are notoriously hard to haggle with. For that reason I'm going to say yes, it is a competitor, and I'm glad companies like Hyundai/Kia, Mazda (and even Ford with the new Focus we don't get in the U.S.) are keeping VW on their toes. No way they can half-ass the MK8 with serious competition just waiting to grab market share.
Just test drove this car. I'd written this brand off years ago. But after seeing a review about what Hyundai did with the i30 in Australia to fine-tune it to that country, I was curious to know more. (Listen, I'm not 25, so what I like about this car won't be the same as someone who wants to tune it, etc) After moving to a luxury brand 3 years ago, I like how the other half live. My Lexus dealer spoils me. They drive an HOUR to pick up my car, leave me a loaner (doesn't matter if it's a wiper blade or a full service, I get this). They never nickel & dime me on service. If I were to take my car there, I enjoy massage chairs, full bakery, cappuccino, ice-cream... did I mention the koi pond below the clear glass bridge? Yeah, it's way over the top. And I've learned to LIKE that treatment. I want some of the options like in BMW, Mercedes etc. But I don't want to spend $45-50k or more. I don't want to pay out the wazoo for runflats that constantly blow. I want an engaging, stylish sporty hatch that has reliability & resale. It's really freeking SWEET to be $2-3k ahead at trade time. Sadly, there is no fun hatch option from Lexus. The UX just confuses me. So, I will miss the Lexus treatment, but I'm thinking it's possible I will enjoy this Hyundai in so many ways, that it won't be too painful.
I’m a Hyundai fanboy. I have to admit, I sold them for about 4 years before retiring from car sales. Before working for Hyundai I sold high end luxury cars from 2000 to 2010. Hyundai really impressed me with their product, customer service, warranty and the like. I was so impressed I bought a 2015 Elantra Limited for my wife. We have not had even 1 problem with that car, which is now at almost 50K miles. The Dealer group I worked for also sold VW’s. I am not a fan of the VW brand. Too many problems. Do they make nice driving cars? Yes, but the Hyundai will out last them in the trouble free category. Keep in mind, I buy a car and drive it almost forever to get my money’s worth. If I was a Leaser, I might consider other brands like the VW, but I’m a buyer. Give me the best bang for the buck!! I’ll take long life and reliably over most other desires. Im now thinking of buying a car for myself. My 1998 Protege needs replacement. It only has 115K but it is Rusting away. It’s been a pretty good car but it’s time to put the old girl down!!
Probably going to get an Elantra Sport, GT Sport or a Veloster R-Spec Turbo. Would like a Veloster N but wouldn’t even ask the Dealer to sell me one of them at a discount. They should get MSRP on that car as long as they can. I’ll get one of those other 3 mentioned at Invoice and below!!
I have recently driven both the Elantra Sport and GT Sport in 6sp manual...Wow, what a surprise. I also drove Mark VII GTI and Civic Si And Sport also manual. Hyundai may not quite be at GTI or Mazda 3 levels..but easily 85-90 percent. Both Elantra Sport Turbo's could easily show tail lights to a Mazda 3 2.5 and have a Good time with a Civic Sport or Si. I found the 1.6 to be both torquey and responsive and quiet on the FWY. The Wow also came from the standard leather interior, blind spot monitoring and Hid/LED lighting as standard. If you actually get out and drive them your opinions could be swayed..I have owned 4 Integra's, 3 GTI's, and 2 Mazda's..So I don't believe I have any loyalty bias to 1 brand or another..just looking for cheap driving fun...I also drove the Kia Forte 5 turbo.. nice content but not the same chassis and suspension of the Either Elantra 1.6T's. My test drive of the Mazda 3 revealed the well respected chassis but in comparison to the turbo power plants of the others here left me wanting for more. With more power I might have thought differently..both the 2.0 and 2.5 are good..but, I experienced better in the others mentioned....Enjoy the Drive!
It figures we wouldn't get the N. The car I would buy at the drop of a hat we don't get. Yet another GTi is what it looks like. The I30N is perfect for this market. Come on Hyundai!
OK MotoMan. From Canada. Bought one of these in July of 2018. Listed @ 28 700 @.99%.. The 6spd manual fully loaded. Got it for 24 800 @ 0% for 5yrs. 525 a month (canadian)...T.
I had a 2006 Mazda 3 5 door hatch with the 2.3 motor and loved just about everything about that car. About a year or so ago, i sold it and bought a Jetta with the 1.8 turbo motor. It's more spunky than my former Mazda, but its too high off the ground and I can't take corners that fast with the rear end sliding outside of the turning radius, and I really miss the hatchback design. I do not like Mazda did with the current 3 5 door hatch with that sloping of the roof which hinders head room in the back seat. I want to test drive this car when it hits my market cause the interior space is similar to what i had in my Mazda 3 hatch. I am not looking for a bat out of hell speed wise, but some spunk will be required and I like that turbo motor in the Hyundai which puts out more power that the current Mazda's 2.5 engine. Four wheel independent suspension is preferable though and I thought the GT has that suspension just like the 4-door sedan does in the high output engine. I priced it on the Hyundai website and its about the same or more than a top of the line Mazda 3 hatch with all the bell and whistles. Some discounts will have to be applied for me to consider the Hyundai over the Mazda as my next car.
I am seriously considering this as a replacement for my antiquated 2007 Toyota Matrix. It has been a great car when it comes to cost of ownership. It has been great for when the wife and kids and I need to run around town. I would love to have a golf R, but I just can't justify 40k for one. My local dealer just made an offer of 22,750+TTT, for one of these with the manual. I think it will make a great replacement.
Oh, please be a fun car to drive with a nice manual gearbox with the nicer options to go with it! The side profile looks a little long in the nose, but not as bad as the Mazda3. I'm also hoping for a little growl at the tailpipes, but would live without it. The GTI has nicer quality interior bits with better feeling plastics and leathers, but does not offer the sweet panoramic roof that the GTS does. Nice job on the shift knob, Hyundai! It looks great, and thank you again for offering the manual. I'd like to see this car nicely equipped at $23K - $25k. It has to offer more than the GTI, though, or many will go to VW based on the "heritage" factor. Can't wait to test drive and hopefully take one home.
I would spend 3.5k more for a limited slip diff, a more complex front suspension system (similar to that of a type r), widder front tires, and a re-maped TCU for the duel clutch.
ikr samsung tvs do the same thing listen to you 24/7 then report back to the government. idk why people keep buy these things when you have no privacy with the microphone being on all the time listening.
I don't believe this is a proper GTI competitor their N performance i30 does that nicely. This is reaching for that Mazda 3 level of driving and now one could add the Civic Hatch Sport. The cost will be better than the two mentioned and I believe with about 5K-7K you may be able to get it to GTI's level and hopefully a trickle down of N performance parts for it like an aero kit, all of which I'd have no complaints. However, with an N performance model on the way I would wait before buying. So I have a question MotoMan my friend, is this essentially an Elantra Sport with a hatch and how's that exhaust note?
The N version won't be making a trip to the US. The Veloster N however, more than likely. This car has the exactly same driveline and suspension as the Elantra Sport, so I would say yes they are basically the same save for the body.
I had a gti and the ride was smooth and a didnt have to move the wheel much when driving. Good speed and gas milage. The car was super quiet. Almost boring to driving sometimes due to the fact of how easy it turned and how silent it was. I test drove the Sport GT today and it was a much funner to me. I was learning towards getting another GTI or the sport GT. Right now dealers near me are offering automatic with tech package for 31k retail but they are going for 24k after all rebate fully loaded. Entry gti + automatic costs me 27k. Learning to the hyundia.
I just wanna hear the sound of the exhaust to see if it's tuned & sounds aggressive like the one in the 2017 Elantra sport sedan. Why is nobody showing that??????????????????? can anyone please confirm?
Cheap, Fast, Reliable... you can only pick two. Since cars are a huge depreciating asset and this i30 is decently fast, I would pick this over a GTI unless I had a lot of "spare funds".
I certainly believe that it is a Golf GTI competitor. The reason being that it has the sporting driving characteristics, is fun, and also composed, like the GTI. It's what the Focus ST and WRX hatchback [when it existed] lacked. I believe that it is actually more of a GTI than a current GTI because it is fun, composed, but at a lower price and the GTI heritage is founded on being inexpensive. Furthermore, I have driven the MkVII GTI and wasn't particularly impressed. It handled well, but wasn't as fun as the older renditions. The VW GTI today is expensive because it has heritage which VW can command a premium for and people will still buy it. The lack of heritage is really the only area where I don't believe that the Elantra GT Sport competes with the VW Golf GTI, but I'm totally fine with that as many consumers would probably be, since that means that they would have to keep the price lower for customers to remain competitive.
I am a huge fan of Hyundai, and I think this car is a pretty close competitor to the GTI. However, it is still slightly behind in a few regards. I'd still buy this over the gti for the reliability, looks, features, etc. As others have mentioned, the veloster N will be Hyundais response to the GTI in the US market (I know the I30n is a more direct competitor, but as many of you know, we aren't getting it.) and I wouldn't pay more than $30,000 for the veloster N. I'd probably pay a couple grand more for the I30N if it ever comes here, however, because I think they really nailed the design of it.
Hyundai has evolved into a very competitive car maker. They have brought alot thought in their design, as well as competitive value into building their product and have shown that in the Elantra GT. They may also catch up to Mazda in terms of handling and driving dynamics. Mazda better watch their backs.
The whole manual transmission thing is kinda funny.. Is it more fun? Yes. But, the thing is, the DCT 7 speed is really good and the paddle shifters are nearly instant response. So, you can have the MT feel in the paddles (or atleast close) and the convenience and gas mileage of the automatic with the DCT 7 speed.
They need to offer the tech package on this for the manual version then I would definitely go for it. They offer the Veloster ultimate with manual so hope they change that for the 2019 model.
I wouldn't consider this a GTI competitor, but almost there. The i30 would be more reliable and a better value, and on that note, I would pay no more than $5000 extra to bring it up to hot hatch standards. For instance, with the Nissan Juke, the base is $19,000, but load it up to Nismo RS, then it's $30,000. $10000 is too much for 30 hp gain with extras. It's easier to swallow a $10k difference between a Mustang V6 vs V8.
We in Australia have the i30 N which is arguably better than Golf GTi, but the Elantra GT (i30 SR in Oz) is something in between a standard i30 (Elantra) 2 litre and a GTi so they don't compare. I will be getting the Elantra GT (i30 SR) because bit more power, better rear suspension, better sporty looking interior and more shiny bits than the basic car.
@MotomanTV You mentioned that this GT was made in Korea. Did you notice any difference in materials or build quality when compared to the US made Elantra Sport?
I’m a Hyundai hater turned lover! You can have those VW’s. I worked for a dealer that had Hyundai and VW both. The VW’s were very costly and problematic cars. Hyundai’s were not, and they have a great warranty. I have had a 2015 Elantra Limited for the last 3 years, other than oil changes I have only had to replace the battery. It has been perfect in its operation. In fact, I’m thinking of trading it in on the new Elantra Sport sedan.
A budget GTI with much better reliability. Love it. Will it hold a hockey bag with some sticks, and can I put a hitch on it to pull my little trailer? Of course..
i would definitely do without the electronic park brake if it was optional, just wouldn't get it.. most new cars with tablet displays seem abit unfinished, maybe a ducting at the back tethering it to the dash would do the trick
Has any auto manufacurer ever tried designing a car with a manual shift stick inside the car, but with an advanced DCT transmission (and thus no clutch pedal)?
Hey everyone well lets see I have had Hyundai before actually the last 7 years 4 cars down I had a Elantra Gt once it it was just to slow but the car itself was really nice especially that sunroof and it's funny cause this was the car I wanted the new Elantra Gt or the civic hatchback but I have always always wanted a gti so after driving all of them except the new Elantra I got a gti and I will say it is an amazing car. It's super comfy and quite and fast and had been super wonderful to drive (grant it I drive it like an old lady) but idk if this car would compete on the same level as a gti . Maybe the civic hatchback but the gti is on a different class I would think. But all in all still a nice car..! No hate towards hyundai new be but I really want to see what they come up with in the future!! What do u guys think?
DAMN IT!!! Just realized that the red seat belts found in the Euro and Aussie i30 SR's are not present here. Same old gray or black as the others. Hope that the red seat belts are an option here in the US
I would say the GT Sport would compete dead on against a VW Gti...if the Mark 6 were still in production. The numbers line up way better with that Gti version (hp/trq). But not the current Gti. Plus I think it would be lighter then a MK 6 because the current ones shedded like 200 lbs over the old one. So I guess you could look at it as a Gti competitor...just a steps or 2 behind. Because as it stands now, the current Gti is like a MK 7.5.
They look like great value cars, but I still hear reliability & quality issues from Hyundai/Kia owners. Curious to know if this generation of products is getting any better with that.
No, Auto Hold is superb. It allows you to stretch your legs at a stoplight. My old CC had it and neither of my new cars have it. Drives me nuts in a stick shift.
I prefer the interior on the sport over the tablet interior on this one. Which is a shame bacause i like yhe practicality of the hatch, just really liked the elantra sport interior and exterior as well. Willing to give up the better exterior styling of the sedan for practicality but the interior bums me a bit on the hatch.
Damn I am comparing this to civic hatchback and I really want the elantra. The problem is the road feel and steering feel just doesnt even compare with the civic hatchback. I am going to try and give it one last test drive
Fintech hyundai upped the suspension on the Elantra Gt sport models, they all come with all wheel independent suspension, so handling has improved significantly. And i would know i just bought the Elantra Gt sport today.
Brad hambrick veloster N is what we’re gonna get later in the year but I want the i30N hopefully in 2 years when I’m in a market for a car they bring it over here and keep me away from my dream car STi .
Hyundai listen up. For a small family you make great cars and great sense when buying new or slightly used considering the unlimited kms 5 year warranty but you need to make your current available engine choice offerings in stationwagons sportier like the GT shown here. Better yet make an I30N wagon for dad so we do not miss out in all the fun. The 1.4 turbo here in Europe for sale at 140hp is not enough for the top spec model, well not for as good as €28,000. I want all the underpinnings of the new I30N on this GT body with no rear difuser on the arse so the possibility of a removable towbar becomes impossible.
i hate how people compare this to the GTI.......its a SPORT model. like the civic hatchback SPORT......not the SI...the elantra fastback GT N will face the GTI in the usa.......275 hp or 305 hp 2.0T with manual or 8 speed dual clutch. basically the i30N but even better
Chris Huber thats true is does not compete with the GTI, but the elantra GT is above the civic hatch. So its essentially between the civic and gti. Its a jack of all trade master of none type of car
For the i30N I would pay 28 thousand dollars of my earned money. That would be the true GTI Slayer and the perfect everyday practical and reliable family that I need. If the i30 RN mid engine car was available I would be willing to pay 45,000 for it.
I'm with you on Alexa and subscriptions. I really want to like this car, but I just don't see anything special about it. It just feels like another 'Elentra'... They should keep 'i30' in the name plate instead of 'gt' and 'sport'.
Robert LeBlanc my guess is that Hyundai has upped the quality since 2011...7-model-years ago! This is probably 90% of the Golf with a MUCH better warranty and equally good daily drivability. VW and the Germans make a phenomenal car, but they OFTEN get tired and wonky around 60-80K miles and start nickel-and-diming you to death, even with proper scheduled maintenance. And I have owned VW, Audi, Porsche, and MINI...all with the same M.O. I'm hoping to buy the Elantra GTS with a manual and give it a go as a daily. Don't fail me, Hyundai!!!!!
^the Mazda3 does. Especially the 2.5L. If German reliability scares you, go for the Focus ST, those are bulletproof. Anything but a Hyundai in this segment, at least not yet
I love it when people with tech devices express concern about privacy and gov't monitoring, hence the initial demise of Google glasses, yet they are on their devices all the time, and perfectly willing to have social media accounts for Big Brother to compile.
Hope this helps someone!
helps me
I am also choosing between this and civic, corolla hatch. I am just worried about it being a hyundai
This most def helped me!
TVinmyEye how is the ride Quality over road imperfections?
The exhaust sounds so good, I wish it was mic'd and mixed back in the cabin
$22,100 = '17 Civic Sport (CVT) MSRP
$24,350 = '18 Elantra GT Sport (DCT) MSRP
$28,300 = '17 Civic Sport Touring MSRP
Don't worry about Alexa, the government could already hear everything you do, through your phone.
Given that the electrical systems in the Hyundai actually work, I would say it's better than a GTI.
Lol oh that one point is going to make this car # 1 lol you $;&&;&:&&:!
I had many issues with my '01 Golf but my '05 GTI was very reliable for the 9 years and 150k miles I drove it.
I think you are right but it is too early to know for sure.
MrMuggsly unfortunately we will not get the i30n but we will get the veloster n.
MrMuggsly what if the mazda came with Android auto? Would it make a difference for which one you pick?
I look at the Elantra GT Sport as like a Honda Civic hatch but the Si version of the hatch that Honda refuses to make.
Well said..
Looks better than the VW to my eyes.
And, auto hold, along with an electronic aux brake, is in my 2013 Sante Fe, FYI.
David Yarber the veloster trunk is actually quite roomy. It's just backseat room but at least it has a back door lol
I enjoyed watching you review it was so dynamic and short but full with a lot if info.
Can Mazda please come out with another Speed3 or Speed6?? Otherwise, i may have to think about a Hyundai N or Sport as my FWD daily
I'd rather rather have a Mazda3 2.5 over a Hyundai lol
As I fly past you in my Elantra Sport. You enjoy that 3. lol
As somebody who’s looking for something a little fun the Elantra GT sport is absolutely in my top 5.
8:00 That yacht in the background is enormous.
I’ll get one of those other 3 mentioned at Invoice and below!!
it's nice looking . doesn't look like Honda's lineup that look like they came out of a comic book . Classy !
Also a K&N filter and a 600 dollar exhaust upgrade. Undercuts the GTI here in Canada by 10 grand pretty much...T.
And ain't 10 grand slower..T.
The Alexa thing, I totally agree with you!!!
You are not being paranoid enough about Alexa!
ikr samsung tvs do the same thing listen to you 24/7 then report back to the government. idk why people keep buy these things when you have no privacy with the microphone being on all the time listening.
Baby Cakes no idea what you are talking about. Care to explain?
Kurt C you're just bugging your own house willingly.
Civic hatchback reviews
Darth Bagel Samsung is a Korean company...
How is the driving experience vs mazda3 and golf?
up
I had a gti and the ride was smooth and a didnt have to move the wheel much when driving.
Go take one for a test drive when you can.
LORD ARTEMIUS LOBOV IV i can confirm that the exhaust on the Elsntra Gt sounds exactly like the Elantra sport sedan. I just bought one, sounds amazing
It was never designed to be a GTI competitor. That job went to the i30N in which the US is not getting.
Considering the MSRP for the Elantra Sport is ~$22k, I would expect the Veloster N to come in somewhere around $25-26k.
Hyundai has evolved into a very competitive car maker. They have brought alot thought in their design, as well as competitive value into building their product and have shown that in the Elantra GT. They may also catch up to Mazda in terms of handling and driving dynamics. Mazda better watch their backs.
The subscription pricing model basically bet on you forgetting about it.
This would look good with an Elantra Sport front bumper and fastback rear.
I'm sorry I'm not more into cars. I completely agree about the subscription fatigue. I only have the absolute minimum monthly charges to my account.
Good review, any chance you could do the auto version at hi way speed while using the radio? No one has done it yet.
No way this Elantra GT Sport can compete with GTI in *un*reliability. Hyundai would be way more reliable.
Hey Motoman I'm a new yorker as well and yes big brother is always listening lol
We in Australia have the i30 N which is arguably better than Golf GTi, but the Elantra GT (i30 SR in Oz) is something in between
a standard i30 (Elantra) 2 litre and a GTi so they don't compare. I will be getting the Elantra GT (i30 SR) because bit more power, better rear suspension, better sporty looking interior and more shiny bits than the basic car.
Elantra is the sedan.
Elantra GT is the i30.
Elantra GT Sport is the i30 SR.
Ok thanks for explaining the USA names clearer. cheers
I don't trust any computer that is constantly listening to my conversations. Nice hatch, not my taste, but very nice.
John Fuller
Yeah. We mute the one in our bedroom. 😏
You have a cell phone?
Falls into more with a Honda SI. I would say the i30N can compete with a GTI
A budget GTI with much better reliability. Love it. Will it hold a hockey bag with some sticks, and can I put a hitch on it to pull my little trailer? Of course..
Too bad Hyundai is not producing this for the 2O21, it would have been nice to have the N version over here. This would be an awesome commuter car
i would definitely do without the electronic park brake if it was optional, just wouldn't get it..
most new cars with tablet displays seem abit unfinished, maybe a ducting at the back tethering it to the dash would do the trick
I wanna see a comparison video of the gt vs mazda3 vs golf/GTI which are the best normal premium hatches in the US
Has any auto manufacurer ever tried designing a car with a manual shift stick inside the car, but with an advanced DCT transmission (and thus no clutch pedal)?
Any word on the turbo in the GT? Is it dependable?
They need to sell at least 3000 of the N models in the USA!
Hope that the red seat belts are an option here in the US
That's the one thing you would change? You sound like my wife. Jeezzz. The seat belts are grey. Are you kidding?
I would say the GT Sport would compete dead on against a VW Gti...if the Mark 6 were still in production. The numbers line up way better with that Gti version (hp/trq). But not the current Gti. Plus I think it would be lighter then a MK 6 because the current ones shedded like 200 lbs over the old one. So I guess you could look at it as a Gti competitor...just a steps or 2 behind. Because as it stands now, the current Gti is like a MK 7.5.
I wish it had the same interior/dash as the 4 door and not the tacked on looking tablet mess. The elantra sport interior is quite nice
So Motoman; in USA - you won`t be geting the i30 N version? Because that is a true GTI competitor...
Why are we not getting the I30 N here in the USA? That car is sweet
They look like great value cars, but I still hear reliability & quality issues from Hyundai/Kia owners. Curious to know if this generation of products is getting any better with that.
i got the elantra sport sedan loving it
Thus car has remote start without the tech package?
When will this car be available
No, Auto Hold is superb. It allows you to stretch your legs at a stoplight. My old CC had it and neither of my new cars have it. Drives me nuts in a stick shift.
I prefer the interior on the sport over the tablet interior on this one. Which is a shame bacause i like yhe practicality of the hatch, just really liked the elantra sport interior and exterior as well. Willing to give up the better exterior styling of the sedan for practicality but the interior bums me a bit on the hatch.
edit the model that really competes with the GTI is the i30N sold in Europe that has more HP and an LSD.
Definitely standard civic and golf hatch. The i30n and veloster n are GTI PP, Focus STand Si competitors.
is that a GTI competitor?
Damn I am comparing this to civic hatchback and I really want the elantra. The problem is the road feel and steering feel just doesnt even compare with the civic hatchback. I am going to try and give it one last test drive
Fintech hyundai upped the suspension on the Elantra Gt sport models, they all come with all wheel independent suspension, so handling has improved significantly. And i would know i just bought the Elantra Gt sport today.
Kudos to Hyundai for offering a manual on a sporty model.
Could you please do a review with Mazda3 GT? many people do cross shopping with this? including me. Thank you
ruclips.net/video/qdJDluvwJEA/видео.html
I mean the facelift 2017, because it has GVC and updated interior, and specs. Thanks
What about the N model will that come out in the US
Brad hambrick veloster N is what we’re gonna get later in the year but I want the i30N hopefully in 2 years when I’m in a market for a car they bring it over here and keep me away from my dream car STi .
I think this one is called the i 30 N and i think that need to brigng it to the states to compete with vw or honda or ford
You are taking credit for the upgrades? Wow.
For the i30N I would pay 28 thousand dollars of my earned money. That would be the true GTI Slayer and the perfect everyday practical and reliable family that I need.
If the i30 RN mid engine car was available I would be willing to pay 45,000 for it.
WTF are you babbling on about?
is the GTI not 5 grand more...nuff said
Half the price of the golf R. Could put down a huge 20k upgrade. Twins and internal and new suspension.
this or the 2019 Veloster R Spec?
Motoman! That RPM float when your driving it semi-hard. It sounds horrible.
When you started talking to Alexa, my Alexa responded.
I'm with you on Alexa and subscriptions. I really want to like this car, but I just don't see anything special about it. It just feels like another 'Elentra'... They should keep 'i30' in the name plate instead of 'gt' and 'sport'.
This will be a great buy for a 2nd vehicle in a couple years after some depreciation :-)
Is this the korean version of vw golf?
Michael Francis Yeah I guess you could say so
well it is not GTI,close enough? gotta be cheaper than one...
Having owned a 2011 Elantra, which was easily the worst car I've ever owned, I'm no fan of the brand, but I still watch all your videos. 🙃
D See have you considered the mazda3 hatch? It's probably drives even better then this Elantra
^the Mazda3 does. Especially the 2.5L. If German reliability scares you, go for the Focus ST, those are bulletproof. Anything but a Hyundai in this segment, at least not yet
Focus ST bulletproof? LOL. You must not get around much.
ewt415 ford and reliability do not belong in the sam sentence.
I love it when people with tech devices express concern about privacy and gov't monitoring, hence the initial demise of Google glasses, yet they are on their devices all the time, and perfectly willing to have social media accounts for Big Brother to compile.
