  • I was going to do all three axis in one video, but it was getting long - so here I present the initial overview of the DRO installation and the fitting of the x-axis.

Keep the red bits on as they stop the read heads from bouncing around and on the glass scale. Far too late now of course but they need to be pulled out after the entire scale and slide is bolted in. A bit like the old antistatic shorting wires on early FETS. Solder into place and then pull off the shorting wires. OK nothing like a mill but I suspect you will know what I mean.

I'm surprised you didn't opt for the version that had the DRO with it. Although possibly it wasn't in stock. You'd think that mounting a DRO to a machine would have been way easier. Great video Dan, Pretty sure the double sided tape will be fine.

Yeah I didn't mention it but stock is always the problem. As it was I was in preorder for the mill for about 6 weeks waiting for first a bare machine to be available. At least this way I'm getting familiar with all the aspects of the setup. :-)

@@MakerGeek yeah that makes sense. It's definitely worthwhile doing because at least if something crops up you know how to fix it and that knowledge is valuable.

for sure. this is why I wasn't too sad to have to take it apart to move it. it forced me to gain that confidence and familiarity right off the bat, including getting things dialed in square again

I've only come across your channel today, and i'm going through the exact same process with mounting a DRO to my mill. It's a big old round column beast from the 80's and trying to figure out how to attach the Y axis scale is proving to be a headache. I'm edging closer to using epoxy for the particularly hard to reach spots.

I reckon that would probably be fine. Most videos I've seen attaching a DRO to a mill super overkill the engineering. The more I've worked with them the more I realise how robust they are. Very little force required to make them move, fairly tolerant of slight misalignment. Anything that will hold it reasonably tightly in position and orientation should get the job done.

Umm. In the long term I think you will need to remove the table and drill and tap to hold the read head. Otherwise I do fear that the double sided tape will ultimately allow for inaccuracies. Luckily my small Seig table was relatively easy to remove. Engineering is always a challenge, yet so enjoyable. So enjoy the content of your videos. 👏👏👍😀

Thank you, in glad you are enjoying my videos. You may well be right on the read head. Though the fitting for the way covers definitely added extra support. So far I've had no reason to suspect any loss of precision. I've been making parts that would be very sensitive to any mismatch. And everything has been going great. It's a fantastic machine.

@@MakerGeek As the saying goes, “if it ain’t bust, don’t fix it”. Glad to hear that you are enjoying the machine and making accurate parts. What more can you ask for. Well done. 👏👏👍😀

Hi Dan I’m just waiting for my wm18b to turn up, have you encountered any problems so far with the mill or anything you wish it did but doesn’t. All the best

Hey Joe, congrats on your new mill. I've had no real problems I can think of. My main wish list items are power feed on the z axis which is otherwise a stretch and on the main table which can take a while to move etc. At some point I'll make something for both of those. I guess I might also change of the axis locking handles, particularly the front pair. It's easy to accidentally have the handles facing down and getting caught when moving the table backwards. I definitely bent one before I realised it was catching. That's all I can think of for now. Good luck with yours, I'm sure you'll have great fun

The Double sided tape won’t work, cutting oil will cause the tape to fall off in a very short period of time.

We'll, it's held ok for nearly two years at this point. The way this is setup there is no way cutting oil is reaching that surface and actually there wound up being additional clamping forces that hold it in place. That said I'm always double checking sizes with calipers etc, so I should also notice if it starts to give unreliable readings
