Hi, Bryan! I was using some other brand to 2K until now - with excellent results. For some reason, my last order was not processed by my old supplier and the customer service doesn't answer my e-mails. I then ordered Splash 2K that seems is getting great reviews all over the internet. It's a little inconvenient for me to order across America and half Atlantic Ocean, but I guess it's worthy. I have reach about the same conclusions as you did: a first medium coat - 5 minutes flashing - a second saturation coat yields the best results. And it does look glorious! I use a H&S Infinity .4mm setup fort the job, with the compressor cranked at 20 psi.
Thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate you sharing your findings. Very helpful for me. Since this video, we have worked out a few glitches and now find the only real.issue is keeping bits of fluff out of the 2K clear. 😉
Hey Brian. Before I jump on the splash wagon how much are you thinonnig the 2k clear? And I assume with just lacquer thinner? Or are you not thinning it anymore? Thanks and great work
Your beetle looks good I myself use 2k clear of zero paints, I also had my probems in the beginning, but in the end you learn the right mix ratio and now it goes well Have a nice weekend
@@BGsModelWorkshop Well darn! I thought I had someone close by. Nuts! I'm actually really interested in the Splash paints. Do you need to wear a respirator with them?
@@vicsminiatures7949 believe me, I totally wish I was back there and not down here! Funny story, Splash Paints is located in Portland. Yes. It basically a super thinned version of automotive lacquer paints. I fully recommend using their paint family. Primer, paint and clear coats. I have paint over tamiya primer but it tool for ever and was a total nail biter of a spray session!
Thank you!! I was hoping it would be more in line with the color of Herbie the love bug. It turned out to be just a touch darker. But I still love it! 😁
The bug looks really good. Just a thought since you live in Arizona maybe the temperature was a factor causing the orange peel. I checked out splash paints and they have some really nice colors. As for the clear it's much cheaper for me to buy a quart from a auto paint store.
The heat is totally an issue, that's why i designed and built my own spray booth. I just finished it and will try it out this weekend. Thanks for watching!!
I'm a little lost. You say that it "sat for 30 -45 minutes before you laid down the clear. Are you saying that you should lay down the base coat and then only wait 30 minutes to apply the clear? Are there instructions with the product?
Hi Mark, I apologize for being confusing and for not seeing this note sooner. I color coated the beetle the day before. then clear coated the beetle, then after about 30 min, decided to try my new airbrush and shoot the beetle again with another clear coat, so it was a turnaround time f about 45 min since the first coat of clear. what i failed to mention is, it was over 100 degrees in my garage that day when I clear coated the beetle and that caused the 2K to flash over faster. I hope this answers your question. if not please let me know.
@@BGsModelWorkshop One last thing. I thought Splash paints was based in the UK. Its great that a great paint is made in my home state of Oregon. I bet the quality, service and availability is a lot better than a company I have bought from who are based in Florida. I won't reveal their name.
@@chipblock2854 oh, i know of whom you speak.😉 Yep, Splash has some really good customer service. Have you tried following them on instagram? He is always coming out with new colors. And i sure wish he was making paint back when i lived in the Portland area.
@@lehcie9 basically none. Once the body is ready, the 2k primer lays down pretty well, only some light sanding with 3000 grit sanding sponges then the color coat. Thin. Light layers. Then the 2k clear coat pretty much lays down like glass.
Temperature has a lot to do with how the paint lays. Not sure if you shoot indoors or outside. You live in az like me, this from What understand is acrylic so you should be able to paint indoors with no issues. High 70s to low 80s is best.
no problem, the only other way to offset temperature, this is with a urethane clear of course, is that you get a slow reducer. Fast reducer for colder temps, medium reducer for weather between about late October thru about March here. I noticed that most sellers only give you clear that has been reduced already and a seperate hardner, but they do not specify what type of reducer that was used. For this reason, I only buy base coats from them and buy my clear at Napa. I can get a qt of clear, pint of hardner and a quart of medium reducer for about 80 dollars. That will give you enough clear for probably about 200 models, with many coats! I clear, wet sand up to 600, apply decals, clear again, wet sand to remove high edges from decals, then clear one more time. If I shoot in the early mornings during summer and late afternoon I can get away with just using medium reducer all year. Heck, it's not like we ever see snow here lol! Oh yes, the best time to shoot clear here in AZ is just after a good rain. It tacks all the dust down. Not like we see much rain but just good to know. I will be updating my boys modeling channel with all of our builds the past few years. I am a bit behind on that lol! They are 9 now and have been taking the contests by storm! One took 1, 2nd and 3rd in different areas and the other 1st and second at IPMS nationals. I taught them how to clear coat about two years ago and it made a differnce and set them apart from all the others. One of my boys got his car photographed for Finescale Modeler at IPMS! We are creating a channel to encourage kids to get into modeling..put the phone and video games down and learn a real hobby! ruclips.net/video/Vy6x6aLi7Es/видео.html This is the link to thier very first show.

VooDoo Nights sorry about the shipping costs. Might be worth it though.
I just ordered some Splash paints and white primer, including the Eleanore colors. Love their selection of European colors.
