My sister in law sent me this video. I’m currently in the process of becoming a concurrent foster parent. I don’t think you were too negative at all, just honest. It is so nice to see Canada content on this topic.
Aw, thanks Christa! You sound like you would make an AMAZING concurrent foster parent. Those who are the most successful are parents who make sure they are informed and gather all of the info they can. Good luck on your journey - I'll be rooting for you!
That last comment about the lack of hurry in finding kin connections is so real. In our case, numerous kin connections werent located until Adoption Probation began, which was terrifying for all of us.
👏 👏 👏 thank you for this video. I worked in the Child Advocacy office for 8+ years and the second biggest issue I saw was things were just not happening fast enough to limit the negative psychological effects on the children. However that said, at least here in AB, there just simply isn’t enough manpower to facilitate these cases in the expeditious manner they need. It’s not for a lack of social workers available to do the work either, the government simply does not hire enough people to carry out the work in a way that limits long term effects on children (and foster families). I know someone who has had her foster kids (kinship placement) for 4 years before they officially started the move for permanency with her. They fussed about for 4 years with temporary guardianship because the social workers kept changing and the parents might come back, and the grandparents might take them etc. The back and forth is tough on the foster kids and the effects are felt through their entire family. The system designed to “help” kids is actually causing more damage in many cases simply because the decisions are taking way too long. As for your video being negative, yeah maybe it is, but it’s reality. I appreciate your candor on the subject 👏👏
Thank you so much, Amanda! It's so good to hear from someone who has seen this for years and knows the problems. Thank you so much for doing the job that you did!
Wow, it just broke my heart seeing you tell the story of the children you had to let go of. :( I’m just glad you have your amazing children now. I would never be able to put myself through that. It’s too sad. From my research, I am more and more convinced of adopting outside Canada and through my other nationality. Thank you for another great video, Jenn!
Aw, thanks Victoria. Yes, it was so, so tough to go through. I pray that by sharing and being honest, I can spare others the same hurt that I went through...
Thanks so much for another great video! It is so nice to see info about Ontario and Canada because most everything else I watch is from the US and it’s not really the same as here. We are with Hamilton Catholic CAS and they told us they don’t really do foster to adopt, you just have to pick one or the other (we tried to do it but were told we can’t). In rare cases they will contact a potential adoptive family to become the foster parents of children who are strongly looking like they will be adopted and if they have to move foster homes anyways (their old foster parents are moving far, etc). The person speaking to us said as far as they know 100% of kids who have done this have been successfully adopted. That sounds so difficult, I am actually glad our agency doesn’t do it that way!
Wow, that is amazing to know about Hamilton Catholic CAS!! In our rural areas, we don't even have the option of a Catholic CAS. It sounds like they are definitely doing things in a better way than the public system...
I didn't know they changed things to put all the risk on the foster parents and not on the kids. These kids already go through so much not having to say goodbye to another family must be a real blessing for them. But yes so much harder on the parents you have to be really realist about the possible outcomes!
I moved to Canada from another country just because in my country we do not have the foster care system, and I had already adopted 2 girls there, after giving birth to 3 boys. Now, living in Montreal, I’ve just learned that in Montreal children are not placed in homes that are not francophone from origin, so I feel at a lost! I will need to move to another province just to be able to foster kids! I now in Montreal there is a big anglo community, so I do believe there is a need also for anglo foster parents, sadly, this is not recognized by local authorities.
Great incite. We are in Dufferin in Ontario and are pursuing an OPR (Outside Paid Resource) instead of our local CAS as we want to Foster to Adopt as we want to Foster kids ultimately and we found the OPR is offering more resources in the fostering process. We understand there are risks but we ultimately are hoping it will be worth it for us and the children we will be able to love.
That is very smart of you, Amanda! We have friends who did something similar, and they had a much better experience with fostering to adopt than we did. Totally worth it!
Once you choose a route of adoption . can you become a foster to adopt after. And do you have to complete another home study and pride program? Just currious as to what path good lord wants to take us ..when u said the part about the older kids my eyes almost 😢 . but i kinda understand .
Hey thanks for the videos! I'm in canada as well. When I went to apply they told me you can only apply as a foster parent or adoptive parent. There is no option to foster to adopt. Has this changed for you?
Hi Kelsey. I think it may depend on what area you live. Some areas have foster to adopt, others do not. In my opinion, I think it's actually better to have either foster or adopt. Less heartache!
@@JennLeast I didn't foster to adopt them. It's the parents of my adopted daughter. They have 5 children - 4 boys and our daughter. They knew from the beginning of their relationship that they wanted to adopt first. Unsure of they're reasoning behind choosing foster to adopt. One has his Tummy Mommy involved and the newest addition, I don't know much about him other than he's a few months older than our daughter and they're the best of friends.
Where any of them First Nations children ? As of Jan 1 McFd was found guilty of discrimination that caused children to be removed without the support that would have been offered to any other race or class of child Sleep on this - remember this when they call you mom- what it be like to lose them so unjustly by what is supposed to be the most polite country in the world by people paid with part of every dollar u make
Does the home study consider if the parents are living in just a condo or an apartment? Or it doesn't matter as long as you can provide the needs of the child?
Great question, Joaqui. The homestudy does not bias against those living in a condo or apartment. You just need to have enough space for the child to have a bedroom, dresser drawer / closet space, etc. Providing for the child's needs is the most important, not the size of your house. :)

I am experiencing that let’s talk about the change you are suggesting
I agree with your latter comments about the system. They pulled back here in AB with that FTA system too... it just doesn’t work!
What a smart decision in AB - I wish Ontario would see the error of their ways and do the same!
Is it possible to adopt a child when I am not Canadian and live outside Canada?

These kids already go through so much not having to say goodbye to another family must be a real blessing for them. Absolutely. In the end, the best thing to do is what's best for the kids. 🙂

Aww, thanks for the encouragement. It means a lot that people can watch and share in the experiences...
This is sad it feels like people are waiting to steal kids from parents because they can’t have kids
