I've done about 6 of those disc brake swaps, always ZJ parts, and never touched the prop valve until the last one. They do work without changing the prop valve spring, but holy cow when you put a manual prop valve in it's surprising how much stronger the brakes can feel. Just open the valve all the way and do some emergency stop tests and slowly close it until it just barely skids the rear tires. It's worth the effort of putting in the manual prop valve (I used the wilwood one). Good video on the swap!

I did this swap years ago on my 97 XJ with 8.25” rear. First time was with ZJ backing plates and proportioning valve it worked great. Pedal feel was amazing. Stoping power was better. When the ZJ backing plates rotted I used 06 liberty backing plates . They slide right on unlike the ZJ plates. I was also able to use the ZJ calipers on the liberty backing plates. It’s all the same bolt pattern. I was able to use the stock parking brake cables with a set of home made adapters. Note:ZJ and KJ parking brakes suck. Hope this helps

That disc converion is one of the best things ive ever done on my xj and its pretty heavily modded at this point. Power stop pads front and rear really helped as well.

I believe it is any 03 - 07 Liberty should have the backing plates you need. You should be able to tell an 02 apart by the 4x4 badging under the rear cargo windows - 03+ moved it to the swing gate. Source: have had a KJ Liberty for the last 13 years

Dex is better at mechanic-ing than making videos. He knows what he's talking about, and does his work very well, but isn't the greatest at structuring a presentation of that information

Hey Guys, a couple years ago we bought a rear brake backing plate/ disk brake bracket set as a replacement for a jeep ZJ that has rusted out backing plates, if I remember correctly they were from Crown auto, and we ordered them from Summit Racing, after doing a bit of research and comparison they
look to be aftermarket replacement Ford Explorer backing plates, that had the bolt holes ovaled out so they will bolt up to a jeep axle.
From what I could tell, probably from about a 1998 to 2003 Ford Explorer.
So for a little experiment maybe you might be interested in looking into that for yourself.
The Rear jeep caliper brackets are often ok and reusable, but the backing plates are the parts that rust out and need replacement,
But original jeep ones are not available.

If you buy a Replacement Set of Disk brake Backing plates and Brackets from Crown auto,
You definitely do not want to use the parking brake springs that come with them..
I absolutely recommend using a stock set of ZJ parking brake springs.

This is definitely on my to do list but I was also considering lockers. I've been really debating whether or not I want lockers on my '98 XJ sport. He you ever installed lockers on one of your XJ's around that year, and which type have you have the most luck out of Dex? You're the Jeep Doctor so I figured your opinion would be what helps make my mind up on what type but cost aside, and which setup option is best on a Cherokee base?

Gravity bleed 100%! Dont you have to replace the master cylinder too? The check valve inside for drum brakes will hold too much pressure when the petal is released causing the pads to drag and wear out fast.

I’ve sold 94 up ZJ rear discs as a kit on a very popular XJ site for over 10 years.
I did this for myself for one main reason.
If you break an axle shaft while off roading the shaft will not fall out.
Very easy & pretty much a bolt on upgrade. Drums suck!!!!
