what i like about john's videos is that he just sits on the arm of his couch in his lounge (like many of us do), no fancy desks or gear everywhere, no fancy post processing, and just plays. great work john.

That 355 especially sounded great thru the Starlite. 5 watts thru an 8" speaker and a 6V6 like the classic tweed Champs. I see they're available for a relatively decent price. Very nice.

Surprised Magnatone didn't stick with a tube rectifier.
I decided to spend a little more and buy a Tungsten 5 watt amp with a 10 inch speaker and tube rectifier.
I have a few very old Magnatone amps and several Swart 5 watters with 8 inch and 12 inch speakers.

Still, this one is way nicer, more headroom. But I still want the big Magnatone stereo model. That thing is killer. Have to sell my car- lol!

In the last 3 months I have purchased two (2) Monoprice Stage Right 5 watt 6V6, 12ax7 pre-amp tube, with an 8" speaker and also with a 8/16 ohm speaker output jack. These amps have a volume control knob and a Tone control knob and cost me $119 each brand new! That's 2 tube amps for a total $238 +tax. In 2017 I purchased a new Fender EC Vibro-Champ 5 watts, 6V6GT power tube, and two 12AX7 tubes and a 5Y3GT rectifier tube and tube driven tremolo and a weber 8" speaker for $999.99 it's a great amp. I can even disconnect the internal speaker and insert a speaker cable and connect the amp to any 4/8/16 ohm load speaker cab's that I own. I want to say that those Stage Right $119 tube amps sound good with the stock 8" speaker but not exactly as good as the much more expensive Fender Vibro-Champ with it's special designed Weber 8" speaker. However the Stage Right amps do sound just as good when connected to my Marshall Full Stack of (2) 412 16ohm cabs for a total impedance of 8 ohms.
I will never shell out the $1,299 for a new Magnatone that essentially is very similar to the Stage Right 5 watt amps. The reason is "MONEY". Of course you all can purchase whatever you want and can afford. I'm retired so I'm careful with my money now.
I have six 5 watt tube amps and 5 watts for me is the sweet spot. Besides the 2 Stage Right 5 watt tube amps and the 5 watt Fender Vibro-Champ I also have two Kustom Defender 5H - 5 watt heads using single EL84 power tubes that can power 4/8/16 ohm speaker loads - I'm not in love with the bedroom tone but in the studio they are fine. I also have a nice Randall RD5H 5 watt tube amp with a 6V6 power tube and a 12AX7 preamp tube that provides a Marshall JCM900 sound. It has volume and tone knobs and a Gain control knob and can run 8 & 16 ohm speaker loads.
I use my 5 watt tube amps in my music studio and in my bedroom so that's why I have essentially two of each. I got tired of every morning and evening relocating my favorite sounding, most used and excellent playing tube amps so I got smart and doubled up on some of them.
Understand I'm not bashing the Magnatone 5 watt tube amp as I'm very sure it's a fantastic guitar amplifier. I am here to point out that you can spend a lot less and pretty much obtain the same tones. It helps if you have extra speaker cabs available.
I used to knock China and it's inexpensive products as I am convinced they are out to put all other manufacturers out of business, once accomplished they shall raise the prices so we shall all be totally screwed. Why am I now endorsing inexpensive amps? MONEY! Being retired and on a fixed income really limits my purchasing power. Yes I have 3 accounts that allow me to purchase instruments and amps on 24/36/48 monthly payments. I have been doing that for years and I have a real lot of nice gear because of that. But now I prefer to pay cash to be sure I don't blow my budget. That is why low price is a priority for me now. I have also purchased two Grote electric guitars a GT-150 for $99 and a nice Hollowbody for $199. Surprise, they play as well, sound as good as my guitars that cost $2,000. So now that my eyes are opened-I know I can recommend saving money.
Will the Chinese take over the world because of me? Well I am certainly contributing toward their success. If only I had more available income then I would continue paying higher prices for American Made gear. If you can afford it then please purchase American. As for me the Magnatone Starlite at $1,299 is out of my reach. I don't want to add it to my already heavy monthly Sweetwater payment. Which by the way I have already paid of in full twice and my credit limit is over $8,000. I guess I'm a grumpy old man for posting this here!

agree'd, even if it was hand wired I wouldn't want to pay that much for it considering for $600 more I can get a vintage fender so yea nah, too much glue floating round that factory.. no way nota chance in hale $1200 for a 5 watt amp.. maybe it sounds good today, but when it shits the bed find someone who will work on your PCB nightmare.. no thanks.. just greed is all it is, hey would purchased the "Magatone" name gonna throw some asian junk at ya so grab your wallets, atm's and retirement funds.. then they try to make it sound li8ke its made int he USA but its the speaker, which is junk as well.. gimmie a good USa made speaker for $1200 or GFY.. I want a $200 Eminence for that kind of money cuz I know magnatone gets em wholesale for like $50 if they buy a thousands of em.. gimme a break, I was born in the day but not yesterday..
