The Darkness is a first-person shooter video game developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by 2K Games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was released in 2007 in North America and Europe and it is based on The Darkness comic book series published by Top Cow Productions. A sequel titled The Darkness II was released in 2012.[1]
The game includes a range of modern-day weapons as well as the powers of the Darkness, which include summoning four imp-like creatures called "Darklings" that can attack foes, using "Dark" tentacles to impale foes or break down walls, using "Creeping Dark" tendrils that sneak along floors, walls and ceilings to take out foes from a distance, and creating a black hole that sucks anything nearby into it. The Darkness powers cannot be used in a well-lit area but can be used in darker areas and under total darkness; the player is able to shoot out lights to help increase the amount of dark energy available. Additionally, by letting the Darkness consume the hearts of its victims, the player can further increase the effects of the Darkness powers.
Over the course of the game, Jackie comes into possession of Darkness guns that are more powerful than conventional weapons but consume Darkness energy in order to fire. The Darkness guns are dual wielded.
The game has several levels based on New York City locales that players visit multiple times. A subway system allows the player to move between areas. While the main plot is primarily linear, requiring the player to visit each area in a certain order, the player can undertake side missions by speaking with non-player characters that wander the subway stations. Completing sub-missions earns the player a "collectible" phone number which can then be used at any phone to unlock additional game media; collectibles can also be found scattered throughout the level. The Otherworld levels feature collectibles in the form of unposted postal mail that the player can deliver when back in New York City in order to unlock the content.

been chain-smoking for 15 years just so I can do my best Jackie Estacado impression 🚬
How do you have lungs?
More please?
can you pleas do a part to pleeeeaaaaaassssssssss
still better impression than nodim portant from hatred :P
i play this game on my xbox as a 14 year old kid , what a game it was .
A remastered collection of the darkness 1 and 2 would be pretty cool I think. Just imagine it!
Gotta say as amazing as this series is it has a fatal flaw that I still haven't seen fixed...
Theres not enough of it, GIVE US THE DARKNESS III
the games were made by 2 different companies.
im imagining it and theres a million games that should be remastered before this shite
If darkness 2 kept what darkness 1 was with its bleak outlook in a remaster I definitely wouldn't mind the buy
Only if Nightdive did it, otherwise I'd settle for just a PC port of the first game.
2 is fine as it is, tbh.
This game was way ahead of it’s time honestly, from the ragdoll physics, to the mirror physics, really a great game.
Didn't Silent Hill 2 release sooner ? It also had mirrors
It feels like i see a way ahead of its time comment on every game video i watch 😂
@@MrSkullMerchant for real these people see something in a game that wasn't that common and type "YO ITS AHEAD OF ITS TIEEEM MASTERPIECE", cant tell the amount of times i've seen this shit
The mirror physics, the ragdoll physics, not holding your hand and overloading your screen with hud elements.
The atmosphere was on point and the storytelling.
Shit even the graphics for 2007 game look really good.
ragdoll physics have existed since about 1998-2000
The music being a mix of opera and metal was fucking awesome. The voice acting and atmosphere in this game was way better than the second one.
Wrong
@@vlinnstone6919100 people say you're wrong...
Mike Patton is an amazing vocal master. He voices The Darkness perfectly. He is also an insane singer.
I beat this game for the first time the other day, and my only complaint is that the end credits music wasn't Faith No More's Epic.
Mr Bungle FTW
I don’t think most people realize the Darkness is based on a comicbook series of the same name. Jackie has even had crossovers with Superman and Batman. The game double down on being grounded, but it works and makes it believable to an extent even though theres still that 2000s edge factor. Every character feels like a real, complex person.
I found some Darkness comics in a book shop and bought them, Jackie is a underrated comic character definitely, they should make a movie for Darkness.
The first game is much better than the comic. The original comics is pretty mediocre, but even if it was the best comic ever, the game would still be way better.
@@notmus maybe he could show up in the invincible series
He fought the incredible hulk too
bro you used brought back heavy nostalgia! I used to love this comic series as a kid and still have it laying around. I forgot I even had it haha. Crazy.
The Darkness, F.E.A.R, Condemned, Alone in the Dark… this was a great period for horror/thriller games. Diamonds in the rough. Now everything you see these days are unfinished, repetitive, cash grab triple A titles.
ahhh man, you just opened up a whole tin of nostalgia for me
alone in the dark i especially feel didn't get the acclaim it deserved.
... Dead Space, Evil Inside.
Still, you haven't played a horror game until you've played Subnautica
Thank you for mentioning Condemned
Alone in the dark was terrible.
i was just talking about these 2 games w some buddies the other day. the 2nd one has gotta be in my top 10 games of all time
It’s pretty good, but it’s ridiculously short
@@_.-_Crimpy-_..-. that’s only thing that’s azz wish it had a longer campaign
@@_.-_Crimpy-_..-. it would've dragged on unless they changed the game majorly I think it was the perfect length I enjoyed it for sure great gsne
Lol the second one is pretty bad compared to the first
@@XWXS2 opinion ignored
One of the greatest games of all time. When you sit with Jenny during the in game movie date night scene, it causes the player to have invested, quality time with her, forming a stronger relationship. It makes what happens later in the game so heartbreaking. 10/10 storytelling imo, especially the narration, and relationship, between the symbiote and Jackie.
On PS3 the entirety of To Kill A Mockingbird will play if you stay there.
@@youtubecommenter2527 PS3 and XBOX have the entire movie, I did it and got the achievement too.
They did an amazing job with the voice of the Darkness, I just love it
I feel like it's as close to a good Venom game that we'll ever get
Thank Mike Patton, one of the most underrated musicians of all time. He did the voice of The Darkness, and i think bionic commando too.
@@danterosales9392 voices in left for dead too, he did a lot of things
I'm glad we don't live in a universe where Keidis does the voice.
@@benjaminrequenez9586 “JackIEeeee…fORGET ABOUT HER… we gotta mOoOoOoovee… to CALIFORNIA”
We SERIOUSLY need 2k to finish this story the ending of The Darkness 2 was the biggest cliffhanger I've seen in older gen games.
Fr we need the darkness lll
I played this game many years ago and I'll never forget my time with it. Calling random phone numbers in the subway, exploring everything I could, the gameplay, story, executions, graphics, everything about it was just amazing. The portrayal of hell as WW1 will stick with me forever. Too bad it could probably never be released today and it's a shame that it probably wont ever get a remaster or port without them making a bunch of changes and ruining things.
The Darkness 2 is like one of my favorite FPS. The story, voice acting, the atmosphere, the simple gameplay but full of possibilites, it's fun as hell.
Fun fact: 2K developed this game along with Mafia 2, and since both released the same year and both are about italian mobs, they re-used a lot of voice actors. For exemple Dave Fennoy(Lee Everret from The Walking Dead) did the radio annoucer in both games, also Frank Ashmore played both Leo Galante and Jimmy Grape
lol that's why it looks like borderlands, ofcourse!
I feel like the darkness one was better gameplay as in visuals and stuff but the darkness two is better with gunplay
Idk.. 2 was great but it def didn't capture the tone or atmosphere of the first one. It was too arcade-y
@@cal5750 I feel you, the first one had that classic Fps feeling but i don't think it aged well. The second one for the art style looks better aged after 11 years but for a game about Darkness, it looks pretty bright
True, fighting with the Darkness is insanely fun. And it adds a nice mechanic to the game by making you increasingly powerful when fighting in the shadows, but making you quite weak when staying in direct light.
And by the way, I usually don't like having to play with some kind of companion in FPS games, I even never play with a companion in the (new) Fallout games. But when that little demon buddy of ours gets KIA, I felt honestly sad.
even though the gameplay for the darkness 2 is superior. the story for this first game is the best of them both. perhaps one of my favorite revenge stories. they did a good job at making you care for jenny
Disagree on the sequel being superior in any way, I prefer d1 personally
ehhhh it’s apples and oranges. one is a rough around the edges immersive sim and the other is a cleaner and more streamlined arcade shooter. they’re both good just not the same.
The second darkness was very short sadly and they removed the stealth mechanics and dark regeneration from the first game that made it more strategic and unique.
@@gurglinghermits3043 Nope, the second is just good but the first one is masterpiece, also longer game with better story.
@@notmus I agree w you, but I look at it for what they were going for, they both succeeded in being what they were meant to be. One was just meant to be a deeper and more amazing.
This game has always stood out in my memory for some reason. One of those games you go into with zero expectations and end up loving it.
I absolutely love this game, one of my all-time favourites. Also where I first watched To Kill a Mockingbird, just smoosh Jackie's head to the screen.
Made me so nostalgic watching this when I haven’t even heard mention of the series in forever. Went and bought both games and to play through again. These true hidden gems.
PLEASE make this a series! I _beg_ you! This and Darkness 2, dude! It is so underrated!
Always blows my mind that the darkness is voiced by Mike Patton of Faith No More.
I remember seeing this game in a video game magazine promoting the game. It looks so badass that I cut it and put it on the wall in my room and then on my school binder. This game and the sequel were part of my childhood and it was just plain fun.
I completely forgot about this game even existing, but man. I used to play the demo all the time when I was a kid and having a blast with it. I'm so glad RUclips recommended me this.
You are covering some of my favourites videogames, I love you!
As an Italian I die every time the characters say Franchetti wrong, ch in our language is like K, Franketti
man this game series really affected me in life I wish they can continue the series because it's a really good game.
Fr I wish they made the darkness lll
Loved this so much in my teens, it got me into the comics and when I was in University the sequel was released, been hoping for a third game since but here we are ten years on...may be time to face facts and just go back and replay the two games
don't lose your hope my friend DMC also expected 10 years to have a new one
I remember buying this game when it came out not knowing I just purchased a hidden gem
This game was very ahead of it's time, the graphics still looking amazing, the gunplay is fun, the dark powers very cool, this comic character deserves a well R rated movie.
i sobbed through it all.. this was my teenage years. brings me happiness someone is playing it. The story is so basic and hits so hard
is this game on the same engine as Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena? It looks so fucking similar. Speaking of great old games, you should play Riddick.
Edit: Holy, not only is it the same engine, it's the same fucking developer. They made this in between Butcher Bay and Dark Athena. That's awesome.
and its shows that it was quickly made...The gameplay is mediocre at best...You could get past the fact that everything looks blown out in any sort of light or in darkness, but the mediocre gameplay really shows how far shooters still had to go in 2005
@@lutherheggs451 this is easily one of the most overlooked shooters of all time
@@lutherheggs451 in 2005 ? This and the riddick didn’t come out in 2005?
Wild how games like this had functional mirrors but basically no modern games do.
Ill just never forget the final cutscene and the credits music. Never
This is such a good game. The atmosphere, acting, story and the soundtrack. I discovered a lot of music with this game. The TV being able to switch to certain channels was awesome.
I originally played it on PS3 back in the day, but I don't have my ps3 anymore. I do have a Series S these days and when I saw it on sale the other day I immediately bought it.
I'm having silly amounts of fun playing this game again. I feel like this would make for one hell of a VR experience. Too bad it never got a PC port.
the way enemies respond to gunshots was such a treat, which more games were like this. they would get wounded, but no die away, they may drop to a knee, or lay down for a bit and get back up to shoot you.
Wow, The Darkness was one of my favorite hidden gems. Never thought I'd find a video about it on youtube lol.
Lead singer of faith no more does the voice for the darkness, amazing to this day!!
Thar Italian accent while gaming got me "dyin ova here!" Lol
This game is absolutely spectacular!! I really need to play this again. Watching this brings back so many memories
This needs a sequel so bad. I'd also love to see a Spawn and Venom game.
The Spawn game for PS2 was pretty fun! Would love to get an updated version of it or another Spawn game in general
Yes, I played through both games a couple months ago. Can say they are incredibly underrated.
I've never played that game back then and i always thought this was kind of an Venom rip off or something. I also like the fact that you basically play Tommy Wiseau.
Made my day when I saw a good RUclipsr playing the darkness such a classic
It’s been 10 years since the cliffhanger sequel, I wonder what its gonna take for somebody to make the darkness 3…
Its fun playing the relics and ending with "Jennys" Relic at the end right before the reveal
This game is literally vintage wine. Not everyone appreciates the taste, but if you like it -- you REALLY like it.
Anything with Mike patton involved is goated
Jayvee did you ever play the Chronicles Of Riddick, this and Riddick are both made by the same studio Starbreeze Studios and look identical to eachother graphically
“The Darkness is still amazing 15 years later”
*said no one ever in prison*
Dude please play more of this, and/or the second. This is such an underrated series, there's so little content on it. They're such unique games.
This feels like a “The Crow (1994)” licensed game
This game appeals to the edginess of me and my Italian heritage. Such a fantastic game.
"i remember my first kiss, i was 15 her name was candy. she broke my sunglasses with her legs, best night of my life" not an exact qoute but i could never find he scene alone
The Darkness is the shadow self of the dude. He is using it to his advantage. What a boss.
Really appreciated this video! Good to see the game getting some love in 2022!!
Thank you for covering this title! Stay in the shadows, ya'll! 🖤
Best Story Shooter of All Time!!! ❤
Man this game looks so cool, I wish j had played it in its prime hahaha. I was only born in 2000 and am lucky to have grown up playing SNES games, but it seems I missed out in a golden age of white dude action games from the early 2000’s.
I like to think of Jackie as an alternative canon for Furio from the sopranos
“Who would just write ‘Holy Fucking Shit’ on a wall?” Cmon man
The biggest crime ever is The Darkness 1 never getting a PC port 😭😭
You can play on emulator, i'm doing that rn.
man, there's so much about this game that's missing from modern games.
the exploration around the hub world without any guides, the fact that your ammo is counted in magazines rather than bullets, and of course killing the main character and love interest in the first act. the story doesn't even resolve her death either, jackie kills everyone involved and becomes the don, but Jenny is still dead. I love this story so much.
exploration around the hub without no guides sounds really annoying in a linear game
can't say I played any FPSs in the 2000s though
@@half_real the only guide is the actual signs in game. There's 2 hubs and they're noticeably distinct so you can tell which one you're in right away. It's one of those games where they had to design natural navigation rather than just putting a waypoint on your screen
@Sneaky Reaper I've never played Max payne yet.
Thanks for reminding me this game i played it when i was a kid and I've been looking for it ever since
I was a huge fan of the comics when I was a kid; this game and it’s sequel I still have very fond memories of
I doubt I'll be the first to make this comparison, but I really get a lot of Venom vibes from this game
Hands down one of my favourite older generation of console games of all time please bring out a darkness 3 on remaster for the old games with additional DLC
Who would win in a fight? Jackie or Jenny? Plot twisters they live in NY it’s 2001 they go up to the World Trade Center to box it out, it’s sept. A perfect day for a fight when all of the sudden, Jackie gets a page, he has a appointment at 12:45 on the 11th, he rushes down to the his appointment gets there and finds out it is the 10th. Jackie calls Jenny: we better do this tomorrow.
I wish there was The Darkness 3
Kinda funny how he keeps shooting out the lights AFTER the room is totally clear of enemies.
Who else played The Suffering?? Or Darkwatch? Or Gun? Gosh I love all of those games so much! 😩 can’t forget about Simpsons Hit and Run also!!! There’s a channel on Here of a guy remaking it with a new engine and better graphics and he posts updates on it either daily or weekly? Just search simpsons hit and run unreal engine 5 remake. He’s doing an absolutely amazing job man even after the first day it looks amazing as hell
I swear every time I replayed this game I cried on Jenny death most saddest death I ever felt growing up with game I still tear up every time that death happened.
Naah Dom dying was easily the saddest moment in gaming
@@user-jake272 dom up there but I grew up with this and still one of my most saddest moments growing up playing this game
@@brandonaustin6209 yeah but Jenny dying was Jackie's fault so the mob aka uncle Paulie was just showing Jackie that if you take from the mob they take from you..... but in doms case it carries so much more emotion and meaning he didn't like being a soldier he got sick of all the killing and death all he wanted to do was to be with Maria whereas Jackie just cares about himself and becoming the head of the mob his uncle was a part of the franchettis anyway so he was always gonna be involved in some way and Dom killing himself just to be with Maria carries way more depth and reason than a mobster who's controlled by a demon
I absolutely loved the darkness games I mostly played the second one but holy fucking shit, this is back when video games were good
This game was ahead of it's time! omg this is amazing watching this, thank you so much XD
It's crazy how the game still hold up after all those years
The dude who voiced the darkness his voice must be like sandpaper
I wish they just remastered it and being available on any console, i loved this game, it came out when i was early 20's so this was such a special game. Underrated af gem here rly
I proper laughed when you popped that dude at the start 😂 funny shit
Yes, yes it is. We need a Darkness 3.
Yes but this graphic Styles ,
Did anyone else think “We. Are. Venom.” Whenever he got his powers? No? Just me?
the berserker is a staple in the games, and both voice actors in 1 and 2 were great, makes sense for what jobs they had done following
It was Mike Patton from faith no more that voiced the darkness
If Venom, Spawn, and The Crow had a love child
Damn this brought my childhood back.
You can give the darkness a little heart as a treat.
Fun fact that I don't know if he got or not, but you can receive an achievement for staying on the couch with Jenny if you stay there long enough
The song that place in the orphanage. I remember searching Limewire for hours trying to find that track (found it by the way). That and Captain Midnight by Tomohawk.
I freaking love these games.
Gun on dashboard ina speeding car has become a new rational fear of mine.
The first time I ran into a mirror….golden moment
This game evoked emotions kid me had never experienced super nostalgic hardcore game right up my alley
This series needs a remake or a new entry.
Jackie is just Steven Seagal
MAN I remember this game. I should go back and play it again!
Mike Patton as the Darkness is still a haunting voice, after all these years.
2:47 the voice for the darkness in The Darkness 1 is the coolest voice in any media I have ever heard. Darkness 2 kind of dropped some of its magic form some reason. Broke continuity as well.
The word war levels were so scary. 😁
So happy to see this, this and brutal legend are my top favourite games ever, played the darkness 5 times and brutal legend 4, i highly recommend it if you love heavy metal and jack black
the game takes me back and since the second release of it has never been the same ever again.
I remember renting this game from a redbox and for some reason I didn't finish it before we had to return it. I loved it so much I begged my pop to get it for me.
Played this game when I was young I had no idea where to go lol
I REMEMBER THIS GAME IT WAS DIFFERENT AND CORNY BUT I PLAYED IT TO THE END SO IT OBVIOUSLY HAD SOMETHING THAT GOT MY ATTENTION
"Tommy Wiseau - The Game"
I wish it was ported to PC.
The spiritual Father of Bethesdas Dishonored.
