Thanks for the memories! I lived in Montreal for 4 years in the late eighties. Your videos gave me something to show my southwestern Ontario kids next time they complain about shoveling snow.
I didn't know there was anybody else like me, who just loves watching snow removal like this,..Thanks so much for the great video,...ahhh you've brought back memories , and why I was always late for school or getting home, if there was this going on when I was a kid waaayyy back then. Hahaha, I am still a kid now whenever I see this going on .
Cool video man! Totally agree with you towards Snowstorm for that reason. It's amazing how machines nowadays clear almost every possible inch of snow from the streets in Montreal.
The SMI you were filming here was in another one of your night-time videos. It has a 6-71 in the rear and a 4-71 for propulsion. The 6-71s sound extra angry - more so than the 6V71s.
now i know what sound that is when i was small i hered this noise on a tv show that was about snow removal now i know what that great noise is a DETRIOT DEISEL!!!
Got curious and found a tidbit of info for the Sicard 5250A (1990) blower. Found them listed as having a Detroit 453 for the chassis and a 671 for the blower. Listing was in Montreal.
I've always loved watching snow removal since I was a little kid. On snow days I'd go out and watch the plow driver clear our driveway, one driver would let me ride along and taught me to use the plow controls. What gear head doesn't like an old 2 stroke Detroit? And the XJ...thank you for that. My first vehicle was a 94xj. I loved that thing and have been trying to buy it back from the kid that bought it for 6 years now.
i remember when i was a kid these were everywhere, now i barely see them and compared to the new models this one is silent ahh, good times when they removed snow correctly instead of leaving tons of snow behind in those days i watched these operations religiously, with the 2 snowblowers with 2 blades instead of 1 following each other
Wow I thought we had rough winters here in Pittsburgh. That looks like a Sicard SMI Junior. What you said in the beginning of video, I believe is correct. There are two power units. One for drive, the other for the auger.
Blower featured here is a (Sicard) SMI 5250A Don't know what year, but my guess would be sometime after 1990. This one looks like it's been taken care of, probably repainted and rebuilt. The old 5150's came with a Dodge 318 for mobility, and a GM Detroit 6/71 to power the snowblower. For the machine in this video, I have no doubt that this blower has a 6/71. I put a lot of miles behind me, not many of them pleasant, with 6/71 power, and a few on a 6V71. The old 71-series were Detroit Diesel's best engines for converting diesel fuel into noise. The 92-series was a much better engine for power-to-noise ratio. Don't get me wrong here, nice video and all, but what is the attraction to anything with those squawkbox screamin' demon engines? I'll be lucky if I can still hear sound by the time I leave this world. Thank the Lord for quieter trucks!
Yes it is a rebuilt one, its a 1989, on the side the first 3 numbers identify it's a snowblower , the first two digits after is the year and the last 3 might be the number of units bought that vear, it might be for all vehiicules in general or maybe only the snowblowers. And yes they are noisy and you get tired faster , some of the guys use ear plugs or cups . I work the night shift and we do the other side, I'm in a Volvo grader or sometimes in the front opening for the first pass with a Deere loader but most of the loaders are fit with a snowblower . That old one we see is used as replacement or for the second pass if we have enuff staff. It;s not the first choice, u have to go under(they use a no parking sign just behind the cab like a small bed) to replace bolts of the blower"s shaft when they break because of steel or concrete blocks, we use lower grade bolts, higher grade might twist the shaft or rip something else like propeller . And yes ...Thank the Lord for quieter trucks!Lol!
You don’t get two stroke detroits anymore for modern trucks ( unless you take the new engine out )because of emissions and noise. I love the sound it is very different - if you can say that- but in a good way. Rolls Royce, leyland, foden and roots built two stroke diesels for trucks and Napier did for the class 55 diesel electric locomotive. Also two stroke aero engines were built in the UK
Does anybody remember the old Sicard/Buda snowblowers of the 1950's. Sicard being the snow blower manufacturer and Buda being the power units. (engines) There were two engines used. My god, those SCREAMIN' Jimmy's would wake the dead !!! What about the 'noise pollution' laws ??? Great machines to watch.
This snowblower is not new. It's the city of Montreal's same old red SMI's dating back as far as 30 years ago but just refurbished engine, maybe some mods but its the same body with a new paint job and a cab with more ceiling space the city like others send their unit's to LARUE near Quebec city which is manufacture and refurbishing company for snowblowers. My city, Ville St-Laurent around 2000 replaced like at 10 at least of their old Detroit Diesel snowblowers with LARUE snowblowers where RPM TECH had a deal with the city to work with LARUE to make sure the new ones had new Detroit Diesel engines in them. A lot of Gov't bodies and private contractors do have new life breathing into old equipment by refurbishing them.
many towns & counties retro-fitted Walters trucks with the v92 power pak & blower, a real blower truck, along with FWD trucks as well.. all wheel drive and a continental gas engine driving the truck! cheers!...those V blades & wings are good, but still even in the countryside a canyon from a passing of the plow fills quickly, better to blow & spread the banks.....
Snow dumps usually where they produce concrete and or sand, it must be below ground level or they dump in water sewer to be be clean and dump in the river free of poluants!
As for the weight I"ll can look for it I can tell u if the snow is wet they don t feed as much, dry snow is no problem! they are pais by cubic meter they can carry . In the fall each truck are inspected to calculate how much they can carry and they fixed a chip on the driver's side, it link with the snowblower and at the dump too, the drivers have card with contract number wich is punched where theyre full and when they dump. The snowblower is linked with gps to the city and they send the data to a phone app, so u know when the snow is cleared or wich streets they are going to do!
For that particular blower (SMI 5250) there is a 4-53 up front for propulsion and a 6-71 (inline 6) in the back for driving the blower. You'll hear the exhaust note doesn't have the 'wobble' that the 6V71 has, so it is certainly an inline 6 engine.
Thanks for the memories! I lived in Montreal for 4 years in the late eighties. Your videos gave me something to show my southwestern Ontario kids next time they complain about shoveling snow.
+Dansmodelworx My pleasue and cool coe ford avatar btw..

Sucks theyve disappeared
You're doing a fine job videotaping
now i know what sound that is when i was small i hered this noise on a tv show that was about snow removal now i know what that great noise is a DETRIOT DEISEL!!!

plazasta I think you mean the newer one are quiate compared to this noisy bitch

yup it's a refurbished 1989. Unit number is 525-89008 at the city the 2 first digits of the second number is always the year of the equipment.
Cool looking snow machine, wow....! Even sweeter is it's Detroit powered!!
you have the best snow blower footage dude lol i never get to see snow living in the south so i just live vicarisly threw you hahaha
Love when he crosses the street and hits the pile of snow. You can really hear how hard the Detroit is working.
Another great catch of these trucks & machines in action!!!
Thanks man!
Np bro

I watched this. operation several times , quite mesmerizing
Quelle belle musique de la tonalité Detroit!
I actually work for Detroit Diesel! I love the sound of the engines.
Cool, too bad Detroit doesnt make em like this anymore...
+retroolschool Thanks to Al Gore who craps himself every time a Prius starts up lol.
not top sorry
They had to do this where I live in Pennsylvania not too long ago. But with the warm weather the snow is starting to melt.
Pour souffler de la neige ,tu n'a pas meilleur, surtout dans de la neige compactée.Increvable
Omg the sound of those detroits !!!!
Does anybody remember the old Sicard/Buda snowblowers of the 1950's. Sicard being the snow blower manufacturer and Buda being the power units. (engines) There were two engines used.

gosh that noise is epic but also very surprised to see that Suzuki 4x4
Luv it!!
(Nothing like that here in Hogtown!)

i never heard one sound like that before cool .
it has that sound because it a 2 stroke diesel
those streets look completely different when the trees have leaves
i had a 78 chevy malibu with a 250 engine and a 8/71 blower as a street race car you would of liked it dude !!
once you get 70 miles or so below Albany NY the people panic over 4 inches
many towns & counties retro-fitted Walters trucks with the v92 power pak & blower, a real blower truck, along with FWD trucks as well.. all wheel drive and a continental gas engine driving the truck! cheers!...those V blades & wings are good, but still even in the countryside a canyon from a passing of the plow fills quickly, better to blow & spread the banks.....
Awsome , cool , Both !
If you know how to take care of snow where is the Deicer?
They grit instead.
Might be able to get more action on Wednesday! Winter storm on the way and they'll be out!
7:30... backhoe hits the curb. lol.... hope Buddy had his seatbelt on....
Detroit 2 storke loud and proud☺
How much does the snow weigh? Where do they dump it? You do know how to take care of snow
Snow is dumped in specific sites in the city..
Snow dumps usually where they produce concrete and or sand, it must be below ground level or they dump in water sewer to be be clean and dump in the river free of poluants!

Des Sicard?
Detroits seems to like high speed inertia better than low speed torque
Detroit’s 53 series can safely rev to 3500rpm
amazing
Don't ever need one of these where I live in S. Texas

retroolschool
oui tu as raison , j'aurais du googlé avant
Claude Fortin
Cest speciale eh?
I got a video of one them huge snowblowers on my RUclips, They are awesome to watch.
What model Detroit is that?
Probably a couple V8s...
retroolschool no I'd say a 6V71 or 6v53
For that particular blower (SMI 5250) there is a 4-53 up front for propulsion and a 6-71 (inline 6) in the back for driving the blower. You'll hear the exhaust note doesn't have the 'wobble' that the 6V71 has, so it is certainly an inline 6 engine.
Action!!!
Needs straight pipes 👍
I'm glad I live where there is never, ever any snow.
That snowblower has one engine and I'd say a hydrostatic transmission drive, no need for two engines on that design.
Its a 1989 no hydro on that! I work there on the night shift!
Hell ya! :)
ça vire comme un 8v71....318hp
6-71 en fait, et le chassis a un 4-53
I've seen one of these snowmasters before, however it was red, with gray rims. (see ruclips.net/video/-EDiZ_kR63w/видео.html&t)
I'm not fan of the noise though...
