My husband is the coffee drinker in our house. He only uses fresh ground coffee, so he always has coffee beans. Except tonight he only has enough for 2 more pots of coffee! I know he loves me, but I am stunned that he let me have half of it so I can infuse some oils over night!!!! He said "Take what you need, we can go out and get more in the morning!" He is the best.
Another trick for anyone without a double boiler that works for infusions of all types is to use a saucepan with a few inches of water and put your infusion into a mason jar into that … super low heat for a few hours, remove from the water bath, cover and let sit for at least 3 days. Give it a little shake or a swirl whenever you think of it. Remove your beans, herbs, or plant matter and let it continue to sit.
When I need glass containers for soaping, I go to second hand stores and buy used glass coffee pots. The glass holds up to heat (melting oils) and lye water, if I should want to use them for that.
I get that melted plastic completely…first year of soap making, melting my butters in the microwave oven in a heat safe plastic container at 30 second bursts…third burst, I opened the microwave and inside was a half melted plastic mixing bowl with 32 ounces of melted oils seeping over the glass plate and through the seams and onto the floor…bad news, it took four hours to clean up and good news, I had the bestest clean floors. Table and microwave ever! Plus, a lot of dirty words concerning the plastic mixing bowl! AND thank you for showing how to do that infusion is, or can be an easy process!
I've been outta pocket for a few months. Moved. Remodeling. Blah blah blah... But, I am finally able to sit down and catch up on some videos. I'm so excited to have a bingeworthy amount of yours to watch! I am restarting my business... and just this little coffee infusion... ooooh la la! So excited about! Sorry I have been away... not that anyone has noticed. BUT thank you for being here when we are ready! I cannot tell you how many times I refer new makers to you! Xo
A good replacement for a double boiler is a mason jar in a crock pot. So easy to control the heat that way! Same process as the saucepan comment from before.
Love the new intro, love the new format, love that it builds on info we already have knowledge of and love how you keep things current. You're the best mrs. S&C!,
I have a Levo infusion machine which I don't use often enough but perfect for this as you can set a timer and temperature for the infusion and also drying fresh ingredients, before using.
I am so happy to see the coffee things that are brewing! 😊 Tomorrow will be an infusion kind of day for me. I'm going to go for the mason jar technique and pop a few into a saucepan at once. I really needed this. I feel happy crying behind my eyes!
Every time I watch your videos with the new intro I'm lovin' it!! I hits home with me always being artsy and creative and a nurse, so art and science truly IS MAGIC to me! ❤❤❤ Love your realness.. If that's even a word😂 Keep it coming chic! ❤
I love you in your whole face right now!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought the coffee butter from BrambleBerry and wanted to use it for my shower scrubs, but decided I wouldn’t use it because it was to expensive in the end product. “A whole new world” in my Aerial voice lol
Your talk about the melting of the plastic, truly spoke to me. I have had a few times where the plastic Ziploc containers completely deform and warp from the lye water solution. Nothing quite like rushing to get an ice bath to cool off the lye water container. There are so many misnomers in those groups. And people can be quite rude to others in them. Before I became soaper, I had no idea how many fights could happen about soapmaking. lol
I just love, love, love your content!. I have only been soaping since Nov if 2021 and your channel has been my 'bread and butter' ( and now coffee) for the scientific part of soap making. I love your 'matter of fact' style and how you've switched up your content the last 4 years, keeping it interesting and challenging your viewership!Who would have thunk that there was a whole month of coffee-talk content?!?! IKR!?! I love you, your content, and giggle at the 'haters'. Keep up the great work. I have more coffee content to watch and experiment with! ❤
I gifted myself (😂) a Levo infuser for Christmas, and this sounds like a great way to use it. I know people use the Levo to infuse, um, *other* things, but I think a coffee infused oil will be the PERFECT project!!!
I infuse almost all of my products. Go to the Habitat store and grab a used crockpot. The sale helps the local community and you can get a really good price on items for your shop that you don't feel bad if they break. Also some xl tea bags. Use the crop pot to infuse/extract on low. I leave it on for a good 24 hrs then it should be done. I can't wait for the body butter tomorrow.
Thanks for this interesting deep dive into the coffee bean realm. I was pulsing a Tupperware bowl containing beeswax in the microwave and noticed the bottom edge was melting. Super glad I noticed what was happening. What a mess that could have been!
Guess what I'm doing tomorrow? Ugh that plastic... I use glass for just about everything... I guess I'm a terrible person by forum standards... 😂 Thank you so much for this!
Wild coincidence that I watch the coffee videos and I see ads for coffee grinders. 😂 They are everywhere! And now, I get to dream up coffee infusion ideas. 💤
I can't believe it's this easy. I definitely thought it was some crazy complex process that I can't do. It's an ingredient I wouldn't buy because of the cost. What ratio do you use coffee to oil?
Since you're using a carrier oil to infuse the coffee into, if you're using something like soap Calc to determine your recipe, what would you term this oil, olive (which was the carrier oil) or coffee oil? Because doesn't the lye depend on the SAP value of the oil.. Or does it not matter really?
Hey! Good questions. The answer to whether it matters really depends on what kind of soapmaker you are, but in this instance you can see that coffee bean and olive oil both have a SAV of .12, so you can use either for your lye determinations. So when in doubt, double check the saponification value of your carrier oil and use one that is characteristically close. Have fun!
Decaf is removing all of the caffeine compounds from the coffee to just retain the flavor, and depending on what method is used, several other compounds contained within coffee that we discussed through this series could also be destroyed. If it’s a co2 removal, the majority of compounds should remain.
I think being able to say you made the coffee oil yourself so it doesn’t require the use of chemicals like hexanes would appeal to buyer looking for environmentally friendly products. What do you think?
I can see that as a good selling point, insomuch as machinery et al was not used, thus reducing the environmental impact. I would be careful calling out chemicals, though, as products purchased from our suppliers are usually tested for purity and do not contain the chemical used to extract once it hits the market, much like lye no longer exists in soap after saponification.
Hey! I do a 2:1 ratio of oil to coffee in my infusions and tend to like that best. The video I did yesterday with just a tablespoon of coffee beans in an entire batch of soap seems like label appeal more than anything.
Having broken your grinder, you now have an opportunity to buy yourself a steel burr grinder and Grind All Of The Things!
YES THAT IS WHAT IT IS CALLED. I don’t know what it is, but I know that it is good for annatto seeds and green coffee. 😂

That’s called the Bain Marie method right? I use that method to melt all my things because I don’t have a double boiler either. It’s great! 😊

This did make me giggle

This is so smart. I don't have that infuser so I think I might try my french press. I'll just wait a while before I press it. THANKS for the tips!
Great idea!

Right because soap is fun and happy and some of the most unhappy people in the world make it. 😬😅

Thanks Mrs!! Love the info!!!!
Thank you for your tip. I have just started how to make different macertions🙂
Interesting! I roast my own coffee at home so this is an awesome way to buy more beans!! Love the smell of a good roast.
Ohhhh I can't wait to make these!!

This is fabulous content. Thanks dear ❤
Hi this is fantastic. Could I please know the temperature you heated the oil to and can I do it on the stove top ?? Thank you. ❤
Hey! I heat it to around 180, and yes you can use the stove top. Have fun!
@@MrsSoapAndClay thank you. Just found you on RUclips. Lovely. ♥️♥️. Thanks 🙏.
I'm planning to test my sous vide to do a few infusions at once.
Could you use coffeee infused oil for making coffee dish soap!
I can't believe it's this easy. I definitely thought it was some crazy complex process that I can't do. It's an ingredient I wouldn't buy because of the cost. What ratio do you use coffee to oil?
Hey! I use 1/2 cup grounds to 16oz oils as my jumping off point.
What is the oil used? 🧐 I’m sorry I couldn’t get that
Since you're using a carrier oil to infuse the coffee into, if you're using something like soap Calc to determine your recipe, what would you term this oil, olive (which was the carrier oil) or coffee oil? Because doesn't the lye depend on the SAP value of the oil.. Or does it not matter really?

Brilliant! Thank you so much! Love the coffee month videos.
What is the ratio between oil and coffee?
I would like to know if it makes a difference whether it’s regular or decaf. Can I use decaf?
Decaf is removing all of the caffeine compounds from the coffee to just retain the flavor, and depending on what method is used, several other compounds contained within coffee that we discussed through this series could also be destroyed. If it’s a co2 removal, the majority of compounds should remain.

Is there a specific ratio of ground coffee to oil? Thanks!
Hey! I do a 2:1 ratio of oil to coffee in my infusions and tend to like that best. The video I did yesterday with just a tablespoon of coffee beans in an entire batch of soap seems like label appeal more than anything.
I infuse my oils in jars in my instant pot. No lids, just cover with foil and use the trivet with water under them. I process for one hour.
Use a container that has a PP5 recycle code...it's microwave safe...won't warp.
Oof! I know that feeling of melting a plastic bowl.
Ok watched a video where they used a crock pot to make coffee oil?
Totally same concept! Heating the oils and keeping them at heat for a while.
I use a magic bullet
I broke my wife’s bullet grinding the coffee lol now we have a coffee grinder and a new bullet 😂
I tried to use a rolling pin first. Luckily my countertops aren’t breakable. 😂
@@MrsSoapAndClayyou’re countertops are gorgeous
@@Twistedtree7 That sounds like a win on both sides! 😆
Stupid plastic measures. 😂
Don’t respond to haters. It isn’t worth your time. ❤
I also keep all that gooey mess from the bottom
lol bonus… plastic 😂but glass is bad
Stupid glass. 😂
It’s the worst.
Green coffee is a headache.
