  • The early days of MMA delivered a collision of fighting styles, where bouts rarely lasted more than three minutes. But the sport has evolved, and now mixed martial arts is composed of multiple fighting styles. The combination of the best aspects of wrestling, Judo, Sambo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Muay Thai makes it one of the most popular sports in the world. The traditional martial art of Aikido is pretty efficient in disabling street bullies and cocky attackers, but in this video we are going to take a look at how effective it would be in MMA.

      Aiki has had a major impact on my life. MIND,BODY,SPIRIT. I use it in everything I do. A book I got around 1989,The Principles of Aikido. In the preface it says. That we use Aikido all day long. Or we would kill ourselves if we didn’t. It’s mind boggling when I think about the fact that everything I do. Is based on the principles of Aikido. Shenogi/Sabaki. Control/ Execute. Begin and End. Control and FOLLOW THROUGH. DO WHAT YOU SAID YOU ARE GOING TO DO. But all that only come from the DOING.

    I was a blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do, achieving my rank at 17 after starting at white belt when I was 12, under a strict Korean master where you really had to earn it. And I did.
    Fast and powerful high spinning kicks was really flashy and great for the cameras and demonstrations, but not very practical for a street fight in Chicago. Still, being fast and strong and flexible, is good either way.
    I met a friend who was the drummer in our band. He was into Aikido. In the yard behind the house I very quickly realized I couldn’t beat him sparring because he’d never make the first move. He waited for me to make a mistake. He’d capitalize on it and I was on the ground. Game over, and he barely had to move to take me down. Don’t get me wrong, I was good and could fly spinning in the air, but he’d just duck and wait til I landed. Wham! I’m down. The difference is, we were friends, sparring and not trying to hurt each other, so I had to not go full-force because Tae Kwon Do is about deadly strikes and you can’t really toy around with it. You have to miss a kill-shot on purpose so nobody winds up in the hospital. You control a kick as a semi-contact “slap”, and a head shot is worth two points. Your opponent is pissed but not hurt, and the match can go on for hours if you have the stamina.
    Aikido is more passive so he could disable me without hurting me at all. I found that fascinating.
    I miss being able to fly and break boards but man, I’d be no match for a good aikido guy on the street.
    Much respect. Thanks for the video. 🤙🏼

      To have earned your black belt by age 17 means warrior blood flows in your veins, so hearing from you that Tae Kwon Do black belt expertise is no match for Akkido's deflections does come as a startling revelation.

    • @Woodstock271
      @Woodstock271 7 месяцев назад +15

      @@riverbankfisher , Well thank you. I was just being honest. My reasoning is based on the fact that Tae Kwon Do is very gymnastic and doesn’t age very well. At 60 years old now and not training for decades, my flexibility is gone and my legs are shot. Tae Kwon Do is 70% kicking. Watching a Tae Kwon Do demonstration is by far the flashiest and most spectacular of the martial arts and why I loved it so much.
      Aikido is purely defensive and almost all hands, so I could take up Aikido right now and still be effective into my 80’s if I trained, but Aikido demonstrations don’t draw pure awe from a crowd of spectators. Yet, it’s more practical and effective in a real fight. Judo is as well.
      You don’t have to be young and in top physical shape for Aikido, so it’s not adhering to a clock.
      Jean Claude Van Dam was a Tae Kwon Do master but where is he now? (aged out)
      Steven Seagal was an Aikido master and that old fat bastard can still kick ass!

      I saw a friendly competition aikido guys vs boxers. 10 vs 10. Boxers won all the fights.

    • @Woodstock271
      @Woodstock271 6 месяцев назад +7

      @@jackillmf , Totally believable, considering the level of expertise in boxing is more natural and instinctive. Mastery in Aikido and most martial arts aren’t nearly as disciplined as they used to be. It takes decades to master a martial art and I’ve seen 10 year old kids who suck, wearing a blackbelt that wasn’t earned but bought through monthly dues. It’s corrupted like everything else these days. So that’s not a real comparison. A halfway decent boxer can easily beat a terrible martial artist these days. I used to go against boxers when I was young, and I’d easily mop the floor with them. ( in points) It was a common test in the 70’s.
      A good kicker never lets a boxer inside. Keeps him at a distance with legs and speed and range. Boxers are basically a still target. Easily whomped with a fast spin kick they can’t see coming. In a real analogy, a boxer is a dog and a martial artist is a cat. Guess who usually wins that? The cat. But again, trying to recreate a real fight scenario with added rules in a ring, means no deadly strikes are allowed, padding prevents effective kill shots, so it’s not a real or true fight with the consequences that would naturally occur for real. The contest and comparison is ridiculously flawed by the rules that say breaking your opponent’s neck with a jumping spinning heel kick isn’t allowed. So nobody will ever know for real which discipline is more effective because it’s against the law and human nature, to actually test it. Real fighting isn’t a sport. So the sport can’t decide anything in reality.

    Thanks to all the guys that pointed out that Aikido is more a a way of life on how to master oneself. It was never meant to harm others. If you are purely after fighting and sports, many of the Aikido techniques can be found in Aikijutsu, Judo and many other grappling martial arts. I practiced Aikido in my younger years but haven't on the mat for at least 20. And yet the mindset and breathing techniques to relax myself stayed with me. Ai is unity or harmony, Ki is energy or life force and Do is the way. That's what I always remember from our sensei's back then.
    It is a way to gain confidence and a more peaceful and calm life. The true masters will always try to diffuse a fight with kind words and not even require their techniques to be shown. So do not expect the techniques to be espoused for MMA or street fights. That is exactly against the higher purpose of the art.

Most important is kata. One must see do or visualize a technique 5,000 times to develop muscle memory. In a critical attack that is life threatening anything less can lead to failure. When I started studying Shotokan. I started because there is a very structured training regimen. Doing 1000 of punches,1000 of Kicks,1000 of blocks and 1000 of Kata. SHOTOKAN TRAINING WILL KICK YOUR ASS. My Sensei made me and another Student do our Kata 25 times in a row. AGAIN,AGAIN,AGAIN. Then he made us do another lower Kata 15 time. With a folding chair over our heads. Godan for him. Tekki. Sho for be. So when I started training Aikido I really didn’t think that it would be as grueling as Shotokan can. How wrong I was. Just picking your butt of the ground was grueling. Learning how to roll. How to move using Tenken and Irimi. To move in Aikido is to use every part of YOYR body. And to keep it flexible and strong. Let alone relaxing your mind, spirit and body. Let’s not forget getting up and down just from kneeling. Do that a 1000 times. That alone a workout.

      Disarming and controlling people - without getting fellow cops to surround him and beat him to death!
      The aim is techniques anyone can do without great strength or lengthy training.
      HOWEVER it does require adequate strength AND the training can be unending!

  • @jmc2830
    @jmc2830 Год назад +13

    the problem with aikido will always be that is wasn't designed for hand to hand. it was designed to disarm a swordsman peacefully. that is why the movements are so exaggerated, because how you handle a sword is far more pronounced then how you move in a hand to hand fight.
    it's very cool in the right setting, but requires a certain level of compliance which will never be the case in an mma competition. they are specifically trained to make any form of compliance the worst possible outcome. especially with grappling and ground arts like wrestling, judo or bjj. typically using your opponents momentum from swinging a sword is what justifies this. something that is far less applicable to a well balanced striker or grappler ( or in 90% of cases in mma, both).

    • @jmc2830
      @jmc2830 Год назад +1

      @@andrewclark5835 no it isn't. judo or bjj were developed for hand to hand combat. aikido was developed to defend yourself unarmed against weapon (mainly sword) wielding opponents. which makes it completely unsuited to hand to hand because using a weapon completely changes your center of gravity. also sword swings are much more telegraphed then a punch or kick. both these factors make it easier for an aikidoka to manipulate momentum much easier. without this, against an even half competent combatant, it's genuinely impossible to use effectively. the opens needed just don't exist in hand to hand.
      jujitsu was similar, until it was taken by the Brazilians and reconstructed for hand to hand.
      if you don't know... just stop.. why people feel the need to enter convocations they obviously know little about is beyond me.

In it's essence, it's understood only by a chosen few due to the life of dedication to the art. It's impossible to attach yourself as well ___ meaning that you are part of the universe as well, thus you becoming the attacker as you harmonize along with the attack. Also, at this highest level... you're tuned in totally with your surroundings... being able to hear snow flakes hit the ground, able to hear the clouds pass over and being able to since an attacker hiding behind a door, waiting to attack you when you walk in. A master samurai was in an inn eating a bowl of Rice...when three swordsmen/enemies noticed the old master eating his rice...they started to draw their swords on the master...but right before they attacked...there were four flies flying around the rice and the old master took his chopsticks and caught the four flies in a blink of an eye. And when the three attackers saw this...they knew they were in the presence of a master and ran out of the inn, in fear of their life. The old master never looked at them during the whole incident. Yes, it is impossible to fight the universe and impossible to attach something that's not there. Peace!!

    Really good summary of aikido.
    You covered the intent of aikido which was great. A lot depends on why someone does a martial art, and keeps doing it. Aikido is fun and has helped me improve in a number of other activities including kayaking, dancing, squash... It also charged my interaction with people generally to be calmer, more connected, which is where its real power comes from. Most people won’t face a physical attack. However, the skills and mindset Freon doing aikido’s can help enormously in calming down situations, as well as improving awareness (and it’s great for learning how not to be hurt when hitting the ground). Most people will have heath issues at some point and won’t face a physical attack - for that reason alone things like aikido, tai chi, qigong are more helpful from a health and well being perspective. However, if I lived in a place where the chances of physical attacks were high then I’d go for something like MMA, BJJ , perhaps judo etc- or move to another area (if that was an option).
    One thing that gets missed quite often is that practice has to be fun and/or rewarding to put in years of effort, and aikido, despite being very demanding physically, can be great fun and friendship.

    Aikido is very effective in out maneuvering and crowd manipulation until strikes are thrown or grappling. IF you can gain control before getting struck, you can fare well. And that is most likely why Seagal developed a kick that as it turns out is very effective. Without striking there isn't much of a well rounded arsenal.

    Finally at least a video that offers a more balanced and informed review of aikido. Anyway the art is never meant for full-on conflict. In fact it is an art which is focus on training your mind body and spirit towards Non-Conflict. But should conflict still would happen, aikido is meant to “finish” off the aggression or defuse the situation or to achieve back harmony in one or two moves. Not prolonged fights like in MMA competitions.

    Very good points mentioned in this video, particularly overcoming aggressiveness inside yourself. Aikido was based on a fighting school, but was created with a very different purpose. During devastating war in his country, Morihei became convinced that the only way to prevent such horrible violence in the future is to train our mind to avoid violent thoughts. He had a vision that the purpose of training should be not to fight the opponent but to fight violent thoughts. He was convinced that with daily practice it can become like a reflex, and people will be able to avoid violent emotions naturally. And if the entire world practiced Aikido, there would eventually be no violence in this world and would can create “heaven on Earth”, like he explained in his lectures. Unfortunately his students didn’t get this message and continued presenting Aikido as a fighting art, which it is not. If you want to leant fighting style of Aikido, you need to study martial arts that it was based on, Aiki-Jitsu or Daito-Ryu. For the purpose of Aikido, it was not really relevant what martial art it was based on. If Morihei was a boxer, he would create Aikido based on boxing techniques. Movement don’t really matter, as the focus should be on mental state, happiness, and non-violent thoughts.

      @Benji MUSIC Thank you. I think even if you wanted to practice Aikido in the class the way O’Sensei intended, as a practice of the mind, you would not be able to find a school that teaches it this way. Most people and even practitioners are under impression that Aikido is purely for self defence, and they try to practice it that way. Without any mind training. Training your mind on your own is possible, I would guess, but it would be difficult without a good guide. So you can try, but not sure.

    The original form of Aikido had many throws, like Judo. They were removed, because most of them were designed to make impossible a safe landing (they would throw you to broke your neck, shoulder, etc). Now, my opinion about effectiveness. Traditional martial arts were developed in different times of what we know today: wars, murder, rape were common things (in a greater number). You either developed a criminal instinct and no hesitation, either you ended up dead. Hesitation meant death. To make traditional martial arts work you must have no hesitation, but having a ''schizoid'' behavior, like the samurai did (which at that time was the norm), based on nowdays psychology, is socially unacceptable today. We were shaped to hesitate, to prudence by the modern society. In the older form of Aikido, Aikijujutsu, you always have a finishing move (you kill the opponent). I'm not trying to sell you mumbo jumbo about how deadly Aikido/Aikijujutsu was, the one killing the enemy was not the art, but the individual and the ''no hesitation'' philosophy/mindset. A martial art is nothing else than ritualised violence. Humans need ritual. That's how we function as a society.

      True martial arts at the highest level, means long healthy life. Aikido is a powerful martial art, and seeing how old the founders are, makes it a powerful tool in longevity. 106 year old tai chi master walks up and down 4 flights of stairs every day, eats his bowl of rice and remembers and converses with his friends. Approximately 10, 11 years ago, I had several situations to spar with kickboxers, karatekas and mma fighters (long year practitioners) and was able to deflect a punch or a kick in 90% of situations. The biggest problem was that I didn't know how to attack. I was in a situation to dodge a punch or kick and then feel quite helpless while looking at a guy who was a bloody impenetrable fortress. I learned how to properly spar, with attacks, grips etc, when I got myself involved in karate and jiu jitsu (Japanese one). And that's the biggest problem with aikido. Well trained aikidokas against well trained mma fighters, karatekas etc. will never allow themselves to ''stop'' the punch. They will dodge. And that's it. I asked him what if you are attacked walking down a dark alley. My Sensei said. A true martial artist would not walk down a dark ally. You don’t go looking for trouble. The reason why I studied Aikido was I wanted to get rid of my aggressive attitude I had acquired studying very aggressive arts. After chasing some guy off the freeway to kick his but. And I realized that’s not what martial arts are really about. I don’t want to make a enemy or injure someone because I think I’m a bad ass. It’s not what we do. And the day that my Spirit made this big Samoan guy who wanted to smash me. Made him walk away. It wasn’t just my physical presence. But my Spiritual Presence. Don’t get me wrong.

But this is truly, one of the most beautiful things I've seen, and being a fan of Steven seagal, who I met one time, but the philosophy... behind it all, is what I thank you, for helping me understand. Now it makes all the sense in the world, on why it would not be good in MMA. For it would go against, the true meaning, behind this art, fascinating. Love it, hope one day to take some real classes, beyond what I study on my own.

Sirumino got up and started walking slowly towards the gunman. The gunman started firing. One bullet hit his knee. One hit his liver and one his shoulder. But by that time he had walked and covered the 10 feet. He was near the gunman. As the gunman was changing his round. Sirumino struck his knife and won. But he died too. this simply means that if you are an expert of only one discipline, sure you may win in few competitions inside the cage, but eventually you will collect more losses as you continue and will never become a champion in MMA.
    You have to equip yourself with various martial arts if you desire to climb to the top of the champions echelon.
    All types of valid and official martial arts will work in MMA, however, you've gotta carry at least several of those to be very effective that can push you up in par with the current champions. Of course, dedication, discipline, maturity, and IQ play a great role on top of your skillset.

      aikido was designed to disarm and defend against weapons. it's from a time were most wore a weapon of some sort. if you think about it, it's far easier to manipulate the momentum of someone holding/swinging a weapon then it is to do the same to someone only having to balance their own body weight. without that extra weight to manipulate, it's requires a certain level of compliance or it just doesn't work. against a trained fighter, aikido is useless. it might help you against a novice, but that's it.
      even masters of aikido admit it isn't suited to compete with modern martial arts. mma has basically made all other art's obsolete. in terms of combat and self defense. they obviously still have health and psychological benefit's. but will never match up to mma mainly because it's taken the best parts of many arts, while discarding whatever doesn't work. considering not even a single competitive mma fighter even slightly incorporates aikido into their style, that should tell you all you need to know.
