It'd be really great if you make a video on Gaming monitors to complement my gaming laptop, and what criteria etc i should look out before buying a monitor specifically to connect with my laptop?
For me with the dell g3 3590, this works way too well. In creative mode in fortnite I get 70 fps in the internal screen, and get up to 700 fps on an external screen (With lots of rgb and a cooling pad). AND got 96th percentile. WOW.
I've been running an external monitor for over a year and never noticed. I have a 1440p monitor but the laptop screen is 1080p. Good to know! Thanks, Jarrod
Damn i just brought a new 144hz monitor and my fps hit 144 fps which i never had when playing on laptop screen max i got was 110 and sometimes just 70 fps this is huge
Quality review, exactly what I was looking for. Just got a question about the scaling issue. I've recently ordered the g15, it has a 1440p native resolution. I want to get an external monitor, Alienware 240hz 1080p, so just wondering will there be any scaling issues and such if I were to connect them. This makes more sense, I played fn without an external monitor and I was getting 160fps with stutter in public matches (performance mode on high mesh) and I was so confused why my FPS decreased from when I was playing on my monitor, with monitor I get around 220-310fps pubs, and 300-400fps in creative
Hey Jared! Thank you for sharing this information. I just want to ask if it is ok to plug in your cable in your laptop everytime I use this kind of method? Will it not affect the battery of my laptop? Thank you so much.
I would do that to prevent the battery going through charge/discharge cycles, that's a good way to kill its longevity, more info here: jarrods.tech/why-playing-games-on-laptop-battery-power-is-bad-in-my-opinion/
This is actually impressive. I tried this with my Acer Nitro 5 Spin and got a +20 fps in Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order on 1360x768p low settings. Although it did stutter more on the external display, but I'm getting a cooling pad so hopefully that will help the stuttering.
In my laptop I actually get an fps boost of 15 fps in rainbow six siege just by using an external display and turning off the laptop display I believe its something related to power delivery

I have always used an external monitor and whenever i went somewhere and worked from my laptop screen away from home it was always sluggish and not so responsive ... and i thought that it might be because i have a external monitor connected and it used the discrete GPU instead of the Intel UHD 630 that explains why i have 0% usage in task manager on the UHD graphics ... now i know thanks for the video !!!
I have one question. If laptop Refresh rate is 144hz and I use 240hz as an external monitor. Then while playing fps game (csgo , valorant) will It take 144hz refresh rate or 240hz refresh rate?
Hey jarrod, is it better to use the mini dp to dp of my helios 300 2019 for my external monitor? Or hdmi is enough? I heard that you need dp for gsync to work
Great review. For older laptops the benefit could be much higher. I have an old Metabox P640, i7-6700hg and GTX-670m. I always knew from the NVIDIA utility that the external 1080p monitor is connected by DVI-DVI though the Intel GPU, but didn't expected performance penalty. Yesterday I got a mini display to HDMI cable, which connects directly to the GTX-670m and the difference is massive. I estimate FPS went up +50% on World of Warships and Total War series, I don't have any of the games you test on.
I practically do the same. I cant see why i should get both desktop and laptop. I need a laptop but want a bigger standalone screen at home. Laptops have come a long way if you get a good one. The eluktronics brand 2060 laptop with eluktroboost almost reaches desktop strength just a few % behind. It can do 115 watts and is much stronger than the 80 or 90 watt varient.

Ive been testing Arkham Knight in 4k resolution between my external samsung 4k monitor and gigabyte aero 15 xa running a rtx 2070, its crazy to see that between the two screen swaps im getting a jump from 30fps to 50 fps in certain areas of the game. I wonder how well this will hold up in new games.
I experienced the same Problem with a schenker KEY 15 Notebook. For example in heroes of the Storm I get 120fps in 4k on the external Monitor and 30-50 fps in 4k on the internal screen. Total rediculous. Especially that the wqhd Resolution is missing because of the Intel grafic Card and custom Resolution arent possible.
Right click on ur desktop and click display settings and scroll all the way down until u see advanced display settings and viola! U can see where your hdmi output is connected!
I wanted to search (some time later) for this specific topic about what exactly of performance can I expect from connecting an external monitor. This video showed up in my recommended. I did not ask for it yet, but am glad it did. Thank you very much, you are doing God's job.
I got back into PC gaming after 15 years. Got myself a Lenovo Legion and started gaming again. Initially I began with connecting it to my 4K monitor and using the keyboard on the laptop and was hitting 30fps. Once I got a keyboard I closed the laptop lid and was hitting 100-500FPS on max settings.. I couldn’t believe it. Does anyone know the technicals of this
And this is why the eGPU market is so popular. Since you can just run the GPU through the monitor directly without having to buy a new PC without needing a port that goes right to the GPU.

This actually works great in ETS2, you only have to use 50% scaling while using 1080p and still have uncompromising quality.
I'm dead when was struggling packing the monitor in the backpack 😂😂😂
I need a larger bag 🤔
@@JarrodsTech yeah the razer one
For me with the dell g3 3590, this works way too well. In creative mode in fortnite I get 70 fps in the internal screen, and get up to 700 fps on an external screen (With lots of rgb and a cooling pad). AND got 96th percentile. WOW.
1:39 my laptop's hdmi output is connected to the intel graphics and does not switch to nvidia at all
I've been running an external monitor for over a year and never noticed. I have a 1440p monitor but the laptop screen is 1080p. Good to know! Thanks, Jarrod
Hey man. How did you connect your laptop to the monitor?
@@FirstLast-wq9zu HDMI
This is 100 percent true, I just got a monitor today and the frames are almost double!
how bro and how much lol you used to get normal and with monitor
Endless.visuals damn
yall have nvidia or amd gpus? i wish it would increase fps
I already use and external monitor but I didn't know I was getting a frame boost. Thanks!
Damn i just brought a new 144hz monitor and my fps hit 144 fps which i never had when playing on laptop screen max i got was 110 and sometimes just 70 fps this is huge
Are you from Sri Lanka ?
what game?
Quality review, exactly what I was looking for. Just got a question about the scaling issue. I've recently ordered the g15, it has a 1440p native resolution. I want to get an external monitor, Alienware 240hz 1080p, so just wondering will there be any scaling issues and such if I were to connect them. Is there any way to solve the issue if so, as I don't want to play on a 1440p external monitor, I'd rather get more FPS.
no there would be no issue think about it if your monitor is capped at 1080 how is it going to display 1440 you will have no problem with scaling
your computer will detect the external monitor resolution automatically and use that for your external monitor
I have Alienware 240hz and it automatically inputs that said resolution on laptop/pc
That's what I want to know, thanks for the video!
This makes more sense, I played fn without an external monitor and I was getting 160fps with stutter in public matches (performance mode on high mesh) and I was so confused why my FPS decreased from when I was playing on my monitor, with monitor I get around 220-310fps pubs, and 300-400fps in creative
Explanation is very easy to understand, Thanks!!!
Howww HOWWWW does every time I think of something one of your videos on that topic instantly pops up on my front page??
That takes a lot of time to make. Thank you!
More RAM reduces and/or stops stuttering
Why would it stutter on an external display and not on the laptop itself?
Does ur Laptop have a discrete GPU or a Intregated GPU?
In my laptop I actually get an fps boost of 15 fps in rainbow six siege just by using an external display and turning off the laptop display I believe its something related to power delivery
That sounds like it's exactly what I'm talking about in this video - the external monitor is bypassing optimus.
MidoTheBeast how did you connect the laptop to the monitor
@@sharky7509 using HDMI and in display settings I choose only show screen 2
MidoTheBeast 🙏🏼 thank you btw what laptop do you have?
Does it have to be external?
So connecting external monitor is basically a MUX switch enabler for the one that doesn't have MUX switch.
Essentially, assuming the port connects to the discrete graphics.
Hi Jarrod, i have an ASUS TUF FX505GM NVIDIA GTX 1060, 16GB, 15.6" FHD 144Hz 3Ms, i7-8750H Gaming Laptop, will it be fine if i buy an external monitor? Also Which one are you suggesting? i want around 24"-27". Thank you
Yeah as long as you have the ports for it it would be good
check whicch hdmi port or display port you have, they might impact the resolution and Hz of the external screen
@@whaleeoo good tip
@@chargedonpc9989 thanks i’m buying an external too for my acer predator helios 300

I've been told that Optimus can be disabled in the bios on the Max-17, isn't it?
Great video! Very helpful 👌
just what i was looking for 🙌🏻🙌🏻.
Thanks😁
Glad I could help!
It should use the 240 refresh rate
Jarrod doing incredible job
Hey jarrod, is it better to use the mini dp to dp of my helios 300 2019 for my external monitor? Or hdmi is enough? I heard that you need dp for gsync to work
Wow i was flabbergast, I'm never think external monitor can boost laptop performance
You tried...
The more you know!
@@vagueequinox7543 i will
thank you very much j'arrod for this video
Great review. For older laptops the benefit could be much higher. I have an old Metabox P640, i7-6700hg and GTX-670m. I always knew from the NVIDIA utility that the external 1080p monitor is connected by DVI-DVI though the Intel GPU, but didn't expected performance penalty. Yesterday I got a mini display to HDMI cable, which connects directly to the GTX-670m and the difference is massive. I estimate FPS went up +50% on World of Warships and Total War series, I don't have any of the games you test on.
Thanks! Wow nice improvement!
That is not old, i would sell my car for your laptop
the premium you spend for an external screen that can handle high frame rates could also be spent on a better laptop
Tysm this was so helpful
I use my laptop as a mini desktop these days, it barely leaves its stand in a year :)
Haha yeah fair enough
I practically do the same. I cant see why i should get both desktop and laptop. I need a laptop but want a bigger standalone screen at home. Laptops have come a long way if you get a good one. The eluktronics brand 2060 laptop with eluktroboost almost reaches desktop strength just a few % behind. It can do 115 watts and is much stronger than the 80 or 90 watt varient.
hi, my laptop can reach a constant 144fps in game but my laptops monitor only has 60hz. If I were to buy a 144hz monitor and connect them. Would I be able to then get 144hz in game?
@@davidreilly9110 i guess you should. I play R6 siege and at low settings it easily reaches the 144 fps mark; just bought a 75 hz monitor and the difference it's surprisingly noticeable.
@@Leonardo-jg4cb which laptop are u using and which monitor..??
Does the external monitor influence laptop's thermals? If yes, in a good or a bad way?
If you turn off the laptop display it will be cooler, but just a little bit cooler
no way
i have lenova legion 5 with 120 hz display.but the problem is that even if i get 60 fps it does't feel smooth.if i buy a new monitor will it solve the problem.please help :(
Ive been testing Arkham Knight in 4k resolution between my external samsung 4k monitor and gigabyte aero 15 xa running a rtx 2070, its crazy to see that between the two screen swaps im getting a jump from 30fps to 50 fps in certain areas of the game.
Great video! Btw, how can I quickly check if my hdmi output is soldered to the IGPU or the dedicated GPU?
Would also like to know how to check it!
How can I check before buying an extended monitor that this will improve the performance of my laptop
I play on a TV screen as a budget option (it's a long story) and yeah, external monitors give me way better fps
