It is from what I've seen predominantly used as a kitchen knife sharpener. So yeah they really are looking for people who want a proper sharpening but don't want to invest the time to learn etc. So they give you the information you'd probably use.

The TikTok craze drove me to look into the design. I was intrigued by the simplicity and the potential of getting a great edge. That led me to Amazon where there are already several other options with Horl-like quality (very smooth mechanics, strong magnets and ADDITIONAL stone wheels standard) for a fraction of the price of the Horl and equal/better price than the Tumblr. I know, because I got one and it's cool! It could be the quick and easy option when I don't want to bring out the Pro Precision Adjust. But, it's going back. It's easy to see the limitations. The Pro Precision Adjust (and its older brother) offers two very important things to me... the feeling I am learning a skill and the fact I'm getting a sharper knife. I'm the target customer for that strategy.

As a person that owns two Ken Onion sharpeners, I like the roller idea. I’ll be honest. The worst part of the Ken Onion sharpener is the ease of rounding the end point of the knife. I’ve done it on several knives and consider it a big flaw. I also have the blade grinder attachment. The design is not that great as the blade leveling shelf is too far away from the belt. Roller appears great as it seems foolproof. I also sharpen blades on diamond stones, freehand. This has been my goto for awhile now and doesn’t take very long. Angles are still a bit of a challenge though.

Thanks for the feedback! Be sure to stop with the tip of the knife still in contact with the belt when sharpening with the KO. Aim to stop at about the halfway point on the belt. This will prevent the belt from wrapping around the tip when sharpening and even restore the tips on knives.

My wife wants the Horl because it doesn't look intimidating, its fun and it'll look good stacked up on the counter.
More traditional products don't look good like a wood handled kitchen steel, on the counter.
My precision adjust intimidates her. And it doesn't look kitchen friendly to her. It also takes time to set it up, clamp the knife, choose an angle and get to work.
Pull through have been around 100yrs, I have my great grandparents with a "stag" handle. But a modern pull through looks cheap, and is pretty aggressive to the knife.
Even my chefs steel intimidates her, no angle guide, small guard. But I showed her how to stand it vertical.
In the end, we'll buy a rolling one, she'll use it 3x and it'll sit on the counter 😂
Thanks for the great products and customer support

For me these are modern day as seen on tv but wait there's more sharpeners. The guided field sharpener is compact, works on a variety of blades, simple to use and is a fraction of the cost.

I took delivery of a Whorl last week, our kitchen knives are very blunt. Only done one so far but 5 minutes on the whorl and a quick strop and I can shave my arm with it.
    Works for me.

I've always understood sharpening should be done in one direction. What is your take on these rollers directing the user to go back-and-fourth? Do these work better and retain blade integrity if you DO opt for one direction sharpening?
Thank you! Great video. Much appreciated.

You have it right, I need to know the grit level of the product I am using. I wouldn’t want to have to try to figure out what grit it is or guess what I am using.
I also need to know that I can change the angle or re profile the blade.

I think it’s great that this exists for people who want a convenient way to get a good edge on kitchen knives that they probably bought with convenience (dish washer safe) as a priority. That said, I am pretty much completely blind and my dad was able to teach me to use the Professional Precision Adjust in just a few minutes, so I’m looking forward to you rolling out the next thing for me to throw money at. :)

We bought the Horl unit with the additional disks and strop ($$$). Fun and easy and clean and we put a great edge on two dozen knives we thought were already plenty sharp (although the Horl's three abrasives and hone removed a lot of metal). Yes, we know how to use whetstones for our knives and ye olde Scary Sharp for plane irons and chisels. The Horl is going to replace those systems for our kitchen knives. Until the next gimmicky sharpener comes along. Too bad your own rolliung rig wasn't available when we wanted the Horl; we might have bought it.

Good info. Have been seeing the Tumblr on various media feeds for a while, but the curiosity didn't translate into a purchase. Thankfully. I have a Ken Onion and a Guided Field Sharpener, and use the latter regularly. I love it's simplicity and portability. Now if you made it with 15 degree guides I would have a one for the kitchen knives in a heartbeat.

I've tried the Whorl, and it is expensive ($380 for a good set and more than $500 for the best)and sometimes difficult to use. As strong as those magnets may be in comparison to the Tumbler, they still need to be stronger. I also tried the Minosharp that comes with the Global knives, and that one is simple, inexpensive, and easy to use, but after a while, it will ruin your knives because it never gets close to the heel of the knife, eventually leaving a bump (that can be fixed with stones, but that is another story). I used wet stones, but it is very time-consuming to set up clean up. Stones require lots of practice to give good results. I tried the ninja system that holds the angle for you. (as long as you can measure that angle) Once again, it is time-consuming to set up to clean up and requires a proper workspace. So now that I've proven to myself that I'm willing to spend hundreds, I'll try yours... I'll let you know if it is the final solution to a sharp knife.

As a woodworker and knife enthusiast, this does not interest me. However, I, and the knife enthusiast category in general, is the minority. The vast majority of the population had no knowledge or even interest in how to sharpen knives. Hell, most people's kitchen knives are dull as hell.
I think Worksharp would be wise to fast follow those into the market place with something that is in-between these two. Magnetic replaceable circular abrasive disks that allow more grits, etc.

  • @stuartfarish2435

I fall into the camp of those who wouldn't be interested. I have a fair number of knives & have need for multiple degrees for different blades. many at 20 degrees, some at 17, a few at 25. I also use multiple abrasives to get to the final edge. Knives from pretty small to pretty big. I love the KO Elite for much of this. I have a WSGSS that I can use for anything I want to do manual. That said, I find the Professional Precision Adjust quite appealing & expect to buy one, just not in a rush given the tools I already have. I also think I might want one of the kitchen sharpeners for just that purpose: to quickly & easily resharpen our basic kitchen knives, quicker & easier than I can do with the KO now.
Which really means that for me this type of sharpener just doesn't offer anything that I want.

Paid 120 for mine and still not super impressed. I wish work sharp made some more grit options and larger bases for larger or curved knives. I would be interested personally in a thin fillet knife base (for skinny flexy blades) and a tall long base for large curved butcher knifes. Some different styles of abrasives and base setups would make this sharpener a dream for someone who has to keep sharp knives in the kitchen for a living

I have a MinoSharp Whetstone, Spyderco Sharpmaker, Wicked Edge Sharpening System, and Work Sharp Ken Onion Elite. I think the Work Sharp Ken Onion Elite gets my knives sharp the fastest and easiest. It might be possible to get a sharper edge with the Wicked Edge Sharpening System, but it's rather slow. I also cut myself pretty good because the knife is positioned edge up to be sharpened.

I’m. a simple guy that wants a easy way to sharpen my high dollar pocket knives. Unfortunately I’ve gotten some straight from the manufacturer that I feel for the price aren’t near sharp enough. Wow I can use the cutting board idea and achieve the edge I want. Also, I can use some painters tape to protect the very beautiful blade. Wow, I'm excited . 35:00

A rolling knife sharpener is not the tool for a job like that. You would want something like the Blade Grinding Attachment for the Ken Onion Knife and Tool Sharpener to handle that large of a blade.

It's the difference between a original product with more thought as far as options and replacement in mind vs a copycat to make money that is not on par with quality, performance.... and rightfully cost. I think this proves that Horl was on track with pricing because the copycat didn't make it on par or better for less..... they copied it for cheap using cheaper materials and sell it to make money because many end users don't know better.

I'd love to try it once, but as someone that loves knives and sharpening... This looks like some expensive and useless sharpener. Clearly not enough possibilities with it. And it's super expensive.
It's a fancy sharpener for people with money. Nothing else. Clearly not something that sharpenerds would love.
Regarding the informations on your sharpeners, yes, we love having Info, " coarse" is not enough info at all ( looking at the guided field sharpener by the way...)
I'd rather have as many information as you can give regarding the grid, angles. Materials used... Anything really.
I like to know what I'm buying and also know that the brand is taking their customers seriously and giving them precise informations.
And don't worry too much, most of us here would rather take your products than this fancy but mostly useless sharpener
