I believe scholarship has changed on this topic. The wearing of gloves tends to make the person a bit clumsier and more likely to damage manuscripts through tearing or other accidental damage - it'e more likely than the possible damage from oils on skin. I was a history student in college in during my undergraduate work I was required to wear gloves in archives. But later in my career, doing graduate work, they no longer required it. I was surprised. The 33 double eagle would still sell for more than that, however. It's been off the market since 02, so we won't know for sure until it's sold again. In 2021, a rare 1822 gold half eagle, one of the most notorious rarities ever, sold for 8.4 mill as well, but the 33 double eagle would still probably top that if sold now. There has been a 10 million dollar silver coin (a 1794 Flowing Hair dollar w/ silver plug, which might be the first silver dollar ever struck by the US Mint). That's the most expensive coin sold IN PUBLIC (in 2013). There might be coins that have sold in private that brought more than 10, but those are only guesstimates and rumors.
@@jpsned Since my last post, both the 33 double eagle and 1822 half eagle sold again. 33 went for around 18 mill iirc, I don't know of any higher hammer price in coins at least. I think that may still be the world champ. The 1822 half had been off the market since 1982 iirc (name of collector evades me, but obviously one of the top 1-2-3 collections in modern history). It sold for 9 mill as the only one that isn't locked in institutional collections. I think the 33 will always top out all lower denoms regardless of equivalent rarity. There are either 1 or 11 1933 double eagles (a fam had 10 they sent into the Mint to get checked and they were confiscated, so maybe 10 that were stolen by a Mint employee back in the day). There's only 1 collectable one just like the 1822, tho. However, it's the denom and the design that will continue to give that one the crown. The only competing coin would be the only 1849 Liberty Head double eagle owned by the Smithsonian. If that went for auction, I'd guess it would do more than the 33, but at least as much at minimum.
There are a few unopened packs of sports cards with high grades of different players that top more than $100,000 dollars that are that of Babe Ruth Mikey Mantle and even Cap Anson and Cy Young. I believe scholarship has changed on this topic. The wearing of gloves tends to make the person a bit clumsier and more likely to damage manuscripts through tearing or other accidental damage - it'e more likely than the possible damage from oils on skin. I was a history student in college in during my undergraduate work I was required to wear gloves in archives. But later in my career, doing graduate work, they no longer required it. I was surprised. I supposed the practice varies according to location.

The 33 double eagle would still sell for more than that, however. It's been off the market since 02, so we won't know for sure until it's sold again. In 2021, a rare 1822 gold half eagle, one of the most notorious rarities ever, sold for 8.4 mill as well, but the 33 double eagle would still probably top that if sold now. There has been a 10 million dollar silver coin (a 1794 Flowing Hair dollar w/ silver plug, which might be the first silver dollar ever struck by the US Mint). That's the most expensive coin sold IN PUBLIC (in 2013). There might be coins that have sold in private that brought more than 10, but those are only guesstimates and rumors.

@@jpsned Since my last post, both the 33 double eagle and 1822 half eagle sold again. 33 went for around 18 mill iirc, I don't know of any higher hammer price in coins at least. I think that may still be the world champ. The 1822 half had been off the market since 1982 iirc (name of collector evades me, but obviously one of the top 1-2-3 collections in modern history). It sold for 9 mill as the only one that isn't locked in institutional collections. I think the 33 will always top out all lower denoms regardless of equivalent rarity. There are either 1 or 11 1933 double eagles (a fam had 10 they sent into the Mint to get checked and they were confiscated, so maybe 10 that were stolen by a Mint employee back in the day). There's only 1 collectable one just like the 1822, tho. However, it's the denom and the design that will continue to give that one the crown. There are a few unopened packs of sports cards with high grades of different players that top more than $100,000 dollars that are that of Babe Ruth Mikey Mantle and even Cap Anson and Cy Young. Remember our society still has a few sets of rare cards out there that really cannot be priced because they are untouched and will not be brought forth because of their scarcity or an individual that keeps them in their family and won't sell them due to their scarceness. When I was 12 years old about 31 years ago I saw a unopened tobacco box of 1909 that was in it's original package. The site of seeing it in it's original form was more valueble to me than the $4,000 dollar price tag that was on the box at that time. Think about that. That Tobacco box was nearly 100 years old and unopened in it's original packageing. Amazeing.

In my local museum (which is a small shithole) we have lots of things that date to 2000-3000 b.c and ancient civilisation coins and jewels.
We also have mummies and burial places of the neanderthal man.

My oldest son found one of my comic books. Now at the time he was only 8yrs old. I have an Actions Comic #1 graded 3. He wanted to break the case open and read it. I want to say the last time I checked. It was worth $200,000. But after he took a hammer to the case and destroyed it. It might be worth $200 now and that's just a guess. Now he's 19yrs old and asked me why I didn't kill him when he broke the case and destroyed it. I told him that I was very angry at him. But not as angry as I was at myself for leaving the safe open. Lesson learned and a very costly one at that.
