    This is a great video, the harp is gorgeous, and finally someone has reviewed the most important thing, which is how the cat interacts with the harp. My cat will come and roll on the rug nearby when I'm playing my lever harp, and recently came and sat on my foot when I was playing my little wire harp sitting cross-legged in bed. I think she wanted to sit in my lap, which was occupied, so this was a protest. Either that or she likes it, she sits on the piano when my partner plays ragtime.
    You have a very lovely cat, and I hope our girlie is still bossing us around at that noble age. I love the way cats start looking a bit tatty when they're elderly. It's a sign of a life well lived.

      I'm afraid I should disagree my fellow harp fonder. The most important part is when she grabs the knife with wide opened eyes and gorgeously says: "Let's get started!". I laughed so much! The beautiful cat steals the scene though. Love it! Just saw in the comments lovely Jipsi has passed away. Christy-Lyn, if you're reading this, I'm sorry about this even though I'm sure your lovely cat had a life full of love. I've lost 2 dogs through my life and I really miss them. Hope you can get some comfort through your amazing music while remembering Jipsi fondly. Cheers from Brazil!

    Just watched your video. Your enthusiasm is infectious and your playing is beautiful. I am 64 and l'm a professional musician living in the UK. You've really made me want to play the lever harp. The question is do I go for the Harpsicle or the Fullsicle? How is your poor little cat?
    Les

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  7 лет назад +4

      Hi Les! Little Jipsi passed away peacefully last November, not long after I made this video. We miss her!
      If it is an option for you to buy the Fullsicle, I would go for it! It's worth paying a little extra to have the option of playing easily in other keys. This would be useful if you are playing from sheet music or from chords, if you are accompanying singing and want to choose the best key, or if you are playing with other instruments. If you intend to primarily improvise (for example for thearapeutic purposes) you may not feel the need for levers, but even then you might want to pick a key that suits the situation. So unless you're very limited by affordability, I would go for the Fullsicle :)

    • @daddylongles
      @daddylongles 7 лет назад +3

      Thank you so much for your reply. Sorry to hear about Jipsi. She did well though to reach the great age she did and it looks like she was well-loved!
      Thanks for the advice - I will definitely get a Fullsicle if I can find one for sale in the UK.
      All the best
      Les

      I've spent hours and hours trawling through literally hundreds of videos and this is what I've discovered. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be happy with anything less than 34 strings as I would want to play those nicer, more involved bass patterns. I've seen a used Lyon and Healy Troubadour VI for £2,200. I've heard people say that L and H harps have high tension and that makes them hard to play folk on them. But as this particular model is a folk harp would that be true? Is it possible to get lower tension strings for a harp like this? I was looking at a Mikel Saffron harp but everyone I've spoken to has told me to steer clear of harps from Pakistan. So sorry to keep bothering you but this is going to be a major purchase and I want to get it right.

Her books are sold on Amazon & at Sylvia Woods' harp center, if you're interested. They are mostly Early Music & Renaissance pieces. I have 8 of her books & really enjoy them! Have fun!🎼🎼🎼🎼

    I wanted to see more of Jipsi and she probably wants out at night. I was thinking about different ideas for cat apartment boxes and tunnels based off of a interlocking and changing concept. The reason for that is because cats are interested when you do something different because they will lose interest quickly. Therefore, my changing cat enclosure idea is better than what you normally go out and get. Cats run with every single critter there is. That includes possum, skunk, armadillo, and racoon. It doesn't matter. Cats, especially territorial females, as opposed to tom cats, will lash out at each other, yet they will hang out around these other critters.

    I have looked up on a website that says an 18 year old cat should be comparable to a human about 80. However, it also says that there's a cat in England that has reached the age of 34.
    So here's to Jipsi: Live long and prosper!

    Hi Christy, was it difficult to adjust to a lap harp? I am thinking about getting a 25 string Heartland serenity harp thinking it will be easier to play for the bed ridden patients at the nursing homes where I perform at. There are so many patients that are to ill to come to the room where I perform and it's to difficult to row my 34 string Heartland harp from room to room along with the music and a stand. I really enjoyed your live performances yesterday playing on your pedal harp you have brought the passion back into me to practice more.

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  7 лет назад +2

      Hi! No, I wouldn't say it was difficult, although it is certainly an adjustment. Perhaps you could play on a friends' lap harp for a few hours to give it a try? It sounds like the portability might be really helpful for you. What an amazing opportunity to spread hope and peace to the patients in the hospital!

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Claire. Good to hear from you! I have not played any harp that has beaten the Harpsicle when it comes to portability and compactness while still maintaining a sweet tone. As to whether it suits you... that would depend on your aims with the harp. I enjoy the fact that I can take it on the airplane with me so easily, and I like the electro-acoustic aspect of mine. On the other hand I also really like to play the lower bass notes on my 34 string, so I wouldn't be satisfied to have the Harpsicle as my one and only harp. But if you start out with a Harpsicle because of the affordability and transportability (and a pretty sound), you could always buy a bigger harp later and end up with two harps that serve you very well for different purposes! :)

  • @stratoleft
    @stratoleft 5 лет назад

    OK, I finally see Jipsi. She appears to be what I call the bandit markings. I assume "she" isn't a tom cat from what I can see. She sure tolerates alot from you without running off. My feral black cat, that watched me throw food outside came closer to me. With alot of work, she comes inside. She only comes to me and wants my attention. Other than that, she is as feral as any feral cat. She's not tame by any means, and regardless of what any nitwit on "animal planet" or anywhere else claims, you don't "tame" ANY cat. That's not how it works or how they operate.

    Please suggest a harp for me hat is somewhere between $3,000-$4,000? I just ordered a Toscano harp & it looks like your popsicle harp. I have a Korg tuner & am waiting on the hand adjuster. I have already spent $700 on it & if I'm going to spend a large amount of money I would love to have an excellent Celtic sounding harp with lots of strings. I have a musical background & would like a floor harp like yours. Not pedals, of course.
    I tried to sign up with your website, but got some South African one instead. Please help.
    I am in the boondocks of WV, so I have no access to observing different harps before I order, so I am depending on you. I do not like the Dusty whatever harps. Other than those, can your recommend one with lots of strings & a floor harp $3,000 - $4,000? Please help! I love your videos. Thanks!

    I have been seriously considering buying a walnut Fullsicle (I'm obsessed with walnut) because I desperately want a harp I can travel around with for my leisure. I currently have a Camac lever harp (in walnut, of course!), but I just have a couple of questions if you (or anyone else?) wouldn't mind answering:
    Is the narrower sting spacing and looser tension an issue to get used to, or is it just a matter of adjusting?
    Are the strings nylon?
    I've only ever played Camac harps so I wondered whether I should instead choose Camac Bardic 27 - I presume it has very similar to string spacing and tension to my current Camac, but then I also presume the Bardic would be heavier and bulkier than a Fullsicle! I'm a bit stuck if I'm honest, so any advice or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.
    Wishing you well, many thanks.

      Ooh, that's exciting that you're looking for a new lap harp!! Yes the strings are nylon, and the spacing is narrower. I don't think you'll have a huge issue with the tension because Camac strings are already looser tension, but you may have some adjustment getting used to the narrower spacing. I can't really predict if it will be an issue for you - perhaps you can try playing on one? I borrowed a friend's harpsicle for a weekend before I made my decision.
      I haven't played a Bardic, so I have no idea how they would compare! But it is helpful that the Harpsicle is so lightweight. If you have a harp shop nearby or a festival or some place you can try playing different options that would be a great idea! I haven't had that chance, so I can't really give you any further advice at this point... sorry!

      Thank you kindly for the reply! It is much appreciated :) I know of one harp shop near me (it's where I got my current harp), but they only stock Camac and some Triplett. I'll have to investigate to see if there are any more - it certainly makes sense to try before you buy, especially since harps are not a cheap investment! I am very tempted by the Harpsicle's light weight. A festival would be idea too! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. Thanks for the suggestions. Take care!

      Eleanor Belo Hi Eleanor. Thanks for your comment, I'm so pleased you're enjoying my Harp Help videos and that you are inspired to learn the harp. The tune at 3:44 is called Lark on the Strand, arranged by Kim Robertson.
      I think it would be a great idea for you to purchase a Harpsicle and start learning the harp! There are many helpful tutorials on RUclips. One thing I would say is that it is very helpful to have feedback from a good harp teacher about your hand position because this is one thing that is most difficult to learn on your own. So even if you can only attend a lesson with a teacher once a month or once every second month I think it would be worthwhile, because a RUclips video can't give you feedback on your technique. Technique is so important in allowing us to progress and play with expression and freedom, without tension or pain. All the best and let me know how it goes! I hope your harp dreams comes true

    This is an adorable video! I know you've used lots of different harps, so I wonder if you can give me some advice: I currently play a harpsicle, But would like to try something different. I'd heard that harpsicles have a looser tension, and wider string spacing (But then just today I read that it has narrower spacing!) I would like to try something with a different spacing because the strings tend to vibrate against my fingernail! - I'm not sure if that means I need narrower. or more likely wider spacing (I have big hands/big fingers). Do you have advice on that?
    I would also like to try a harp with a tighter tension.
    If you have any insights into either of those, I look forward to your reply at your convenience. 💗🎶

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Linda. Good to hear from you! Yes, Harpsicles have quite loose tension and narrower-than-usual string spacing. It sounds like you would be looking for something with a wider string spacing. But I don't think I can really tell you what would feel best to you, especially for the string tension. Do you live in the US? I would highly recommend that you try playing a few different harps before you buy another harp, even if it means you have to wait a while until you can visit a harp shop or festival. That way you can see which harp feels and sounds right to you, because it's such a personal decision. Hopefully you will be able to try at least a Dusty Strings and Camac before you make up your mind :)

      Christy-Lyn's music -Thank you for your helpful information! I'm in Canada (Vancouver) but I've never heard of any harp festivals here. There are three large Music stores here, and only two of them carry herbs… And each one of them carries only one type. Fortunately one of them does carry Dusty Strings! The other store carries Lyon & Healy, Ogden only. I will do a little research and see if I can find where I might be able to try different harps. Thanks again!

    My only harp at this point is a Troubadour V. I'm very curious about the harpsicles, particularly the Grandsicle, but I've read so many reviews that say that the tension of harpsicles is annoyingly low and is like playing on dental floss and not very enjoyable. How do you find the difference in tension?

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  3 года назад +1

      There is definitely a huge difference in tension between the Troubadour and Harpsicles. It’s going to be personal preference whether you enjoy having the two different harps for different songs, or whether you find it annoying to move between the two different tensions. I like having my little Harpsicle to carry around easily when I don’t feel like moving my Ogden. But I personally wouldn’t go for the Grand Harpsicle, because I prefer harps of that size to have a deeper tone. But some people love them! 👍🏻

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  4 года назад +1

      Spacing between harp strings differs in the bass and treble of the same harp (wider spacing in the bass, narrower spacing in the treble), so I can’t really give you a specific answer that applies to the whole harp.

    • @leerodriguez3585
      @leerodriguez3585 4 года назад

      @@LearningtheHarp is it generally smaller than the harps you're used to?

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  4 года назад +1

      Yes it’s smaller than the “concert spacing” on pedal harps and lever harps made by classical harp makers. But South American harps and celtic harps often have narrower spacing. There is a lot of variation between harps, and usually small harps like this one have narrow spacing because then you can fit more strings in a smaller design 😊 It does take some adjusting if you’re used to wider spacing, and it doesn’t always work well for people with thick fingers, and some aspects of classical technique are harder to learn on these harps. But some aspects of celtic harp technique are easier, so it depends what you want to learn 😊

  • @lindasue8719
    @lindasue8719 6 лет назад

    Hi, Christy, I've only ever played a Harpsicle so I was curious about your comments on the string spacing - how does it compare to other harps?

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  6 лет назад

      Linda Susan 2686 Hi Linda! Thanks for your comment 😊 The Harpsicle’s spacing is much narrower than my other two harps - usually smaller (lap) harps have narrower spacing, so that is a bit of an adjustment when you play another harp. But our brains usually can adjust to the differences without too much trouble.

    • @lindasue8719
      @lindasue8719 6 лет назад +1

      Yes I think I need wider spacing. The strings are vibrating against the side of my fingernail because I think that between the loose tension and narrower spacing, when I'm getting my finger ready on an adjacent string, the vibrating one is making contact with my finger.

    • @lindasue8719
      @lindasue8719 6 лет назад

      Crazy question: can I ask you a huuuuge favor? *At your convenience* would you mind measuring the distance between two of the strings on the Ogden? LOL also the overall length of a two-octaves range in the mid-range of the harp? I read that that latter one in particular is useful for determining spacing. The article said an average would be about 8-1/2 inches (21-1/2cm). On my harpsicle it was only 7 inches (18cm)!!!

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  7 лет назад

      Hi there! So exciting to be learning the harp, I'm sure you're enjoying it! I think the best would be to discuss this with your teacher. The harpsicle is a lovely instrument and I recommend it for all harpists because it is so easy to transport and has a lovely tone. But it depends what type of music you're learning and what direction you're going with your music - for some people it would be better to save up a little more and purchase a slightly bigger harp. But if you have the funds to purchase a Harpsicle now and a bigger harp later, that would be amazing because it's really great to have both!

    • @octaviusthird6726

      I tried this harp at the store and I didn't like the string tension (different from regular 26 string harps) and the strings. I think it is good as a second harp because it's easy to transport but not as the primary harp to practice on. But it's just my personal preferences.

I think you'll find the spacing is narrower than your ravenna, but it's not too difficult to adjust... it just takes a little time :) My 34 string Ogden has much wider spacing than my Harpsicle, and I am able to play both of them and adjust to the different spacing.
