FSLabs A320-X Basics: VLS and Approach Speed Management

- In this video I am explaining how the VLS is calculated, why there can be a difference between VLS in the FMS and on the Speedband, and how to adjust the VAPP to maintain the 5 kt buffer to the VLS.
Please leave a thumbs up if you liked the video. Cheers!

At least the perfect video to understand this concept simply. Hats off to you
Thanks 🙏
For me the greatest advantage of your videos is to return to them and use as a refresh/reference point when things get a little rusty!! Thanks.
Thank you for your support 👍🏼
Excellent explanation Blackbox711. Now I know what to do if there is a difference between the two VLS indications. Thanks, great video.
+Ed Anthony Somera .. glad it helped 👍🏼
Another great video. Love the technical and authoritative details.
Thank you very much Malcolm!
Fantastic video, thanks. Not only do you (unsurprisingly) know the subject matter very well, you are also able to present and demonstrate that knowledge in a way that is most helpful. Hut ab! 8)
Thank you very much Julien 👍🏼
As always just great work, thank you for the tutorial :)
Hi Derin. Thank you for your kind words. Regards
Thanks, very informative and qualified videos
Thank you very much for the positive feedback!
Blackbox....Your videos are amazing, I have been a fan and appreciated your insight on being a professional pilot for some time. Thank you, as of today I am the proud owner of P3D and the FSLabs A320. Going back through your vids from day one to get proficient. I really appreciate you doing all of this work to produce these. Congrats on the recent Twitch partnership, I will see you on that side here soon and make sure to donate for all the knowledge you have shared with me. -DG
Hi David. Thank you very much for your kind words and the amazing support! I appreciate that very much. Happy Landings, BB
look i am going to say it ; you know your stuff ! and you are able to present it clearly and in a simple pedagogic manner :)
i really wish you would go FULL BLOWN on the video series, i mean like , tell us all about the FSL A320 that there is to learn and fly and moooree :D
non precision approaches , systems , fails, ECAM msgs allllll of it !!!
lets hope you have the time and patience to do it :)
Hi Jaffer. I am trying to remain within certain limits because I am afraid most people would then stop watching if it becomes too technical. Regards
fair enough :)
Dear friend hello '
Lovely video explaining the difference so nicely. Plz do a video on ILS RAW DATA APPROACH with cross wind varying n also magnify the PFD so that technique raw data ILS could be understood really well and also if you could video what are requirement for NPA for managed and selected guidance would highly be appreciated.
Regards
Moin
Thank you again for your very detailed and useful vids, i have a question i dont have yet the fslabs320 but have the older wilco 320 family and the aerosoft most recent 320 and any time i want to fly direct to some waypoint appears the T-P simbol on the ND and the aircraft simply turns to the left getting out off course regaining the desired track again with heading mode , why??
+azizc64 .. Thank you very much. I don't have the Aerosoft or Wilco A320. So unfortunately I cannot really help you with that. But it looks to me to be a bug because the Dir-To function is very basic and should not cause the aircraft to turn in any other direction than to the selected waypoint. Regards
Hai Blackbox711, Great video. I have 2 questions.
We are using an APPROACH PHASE in FMC for the calculation. But, Is this phase available in real Airbus flights?
How to calculate approach speed manually?
Next time, please make a video regarding manual approach speed calculation with different flap configurations. If possible. Tank-you.. We are waiting for another outstanding video
Hi. Yes, in real life the MCDU approach phase page is identical. And we use the approach speed shown after filling out all necessary data fields there. In order to calculate approach speeds manually you would need the QRH table.
Hi, I basically follow what you did in the demonstration, after switching facs on both sides, the ap and a/th disengaged at the same time , and can't engage them again without the facs on. what could have been wrong ?
Hi. Why would you switch both FAC's off?
Oh yeah, I understand that logic now how the systems work, thanks
so is it always necessary to have a minimum 5 knots buffer between VLS on speed tape and vapp ??
Hi Jaffer. Where I used to fly it had to be am minimum of 5 kts. However during an abnormal the landing distance calculation would be with VLS exactly. Regards
Do you have to set on the app phase page the reported wind or 1/3 of the reported wind component?
Reported wind without gusts
@@Blackbox711 Thank you very much!!
Question. I noticed I had a very high VLS speed on a flight from KPHX to KSFO. I was very light and had about 2000 lbs of fuel at arrival.
+Iron Condor Simulations ... Could you tell me exactly how height the Grossweight/VLS was?
Thanks for responding. It fixed the data when it auto activated the APP phase on final. Weird how the data was wrong when setting it up durring the approach.
+Iron Condor Simulations ... OK. Sometimes the FMS does some strange things
Blackbox711 actually there was a thread on FSlabs stating that version 1.96 had this issue. Version 1.97 binaries fix the issue.
my problem is very light and Vls very high . 3000 ft gw 60000 when use flap become correct but very hard ...
Hi,
On what basis is the shown VLS in the MCDU calculated?
(In your example the 131 kts)
Do you know why there is this discripency where the FAC calculated values are not automatically feed back into the MCDU values. After all it must be the more exact. :-)
Thanks for a bunch of great videos.
Cheers
Stephen
Hi Stephen. The VLS in the MCDU is calculated with the inserted Performance Data. The VLS on the PFF is calculated by the FAC, where the Grossweight is calculated by certain factors like AoA, TAS, Altitude etc. That is why there can be a difference. Regards
Blackbox711 thanks. I still do not understand why - if the FAC calculated is considered more precise, why the less precise value is not discarded and overwritten with the FAC calculated value... :-)
/Stephen
+MrSOdgaard .. No, the VLS does not necessarily calculate a more accurate VLS. The AoA sensors have some error as well. Also you cannot directly change the VLS in the MCDU. This could only be done by manipulating the GW setting in the MCDU. And the GW is taken from the Loadsheet which is considered to be accurate. So in order to make sure that you have a 5 kt buffer (for wind gusts) to the PFD VLS (which is master for warnings), you increase the Vapp in the MCDU if necessary. I know it sounds strange, but that is Airbus for you. 😉 Regards
Blackbox711 😉. Interesting and a bit odd...
Thanks for the insight.👊🏻
Do you fly 320s for a living?
/Stephen
+MrSOdgaard .. Yes I did. Won't say what I am doing now though. Regards BB
How did you tell the VLS on the speed tape? How did you know it was 133 and not, say, 132 or 1?
Just look at the Speedband and you can judge/estimate the VLS displayed in the PFD. It is not exact science, just make sure you have at least 5 kts buffer between Vapp and VLS on the PFD.
What do this letter mean
F=145
S=187
O=207
O=Green dot speed = best glide speed
S=lowest speed without slats
F=lowest speed without Flaps at 3 or 4
Blackbox711
Thank you for replying
Can i put vapp selected rather than managed ?
You can ofc. Although managed speed will give you the groundspeed mini function where the approach speed is automatically corrected for wind gusts.
How do you get a320? Is it aerosoft airbus x?
Hi Fariz Faiz. This addons is the Flightsimlabs A320-X. Go to flightsimlabs.com
what is the meaning of 1.13 VS1g?
Thank you
The stall speed of the A320 can’t be determined in the traditional sense because of its flight envelope protection system. Hence it was determined that the formula 1.13 times the speed of where the the A320 can’t maintain level flight at 1g any more.
@@Blackbox711 perfect. had to watch this tutorial two times to understand it. really enjoyed it. well done
The Airbus is a complex aircraft

All good. Excellent videos. Thank you 😊
