I love this kind of thing. Recently, I built one, too, in 1/72 scale. My "what if" was an Israeli tank in 1948. Historically, Israel found some Sherman's in Italian junkyards, bought them and put them into combat. So what if they also found some M3 medium tanks, too. To the basic M3 I added a long 75 (the kind used in the Panther, but manufactured in France post-war) for the hull-mounted main gun, and replaced the turret 37mm with a British 6-pounder (57mm in US service) anti-tank gun. It was a fun project.
Good luck turning that tank around corners, that gun is gonna whack something

That's brilliant, I especially like how the modeller has kept it real in that the bow armour plates are dismountable for access to the final drive and the escape hatch on the left hull side has a deflector in front of it.
I was really hoping someone would do a 'what if vehicle' like these, and lo and behold a double whammy!;) very nice build there to you and your friend. Have always thought about doing an unusual Sherman with various unusual attributes. Well done gentlemen!
This type of video is a really good idea, and it's different from what you usually do. Your videos really help me with my own models, especially the weathering, and I even brought an airbrush after watching how you use it. If you could do a video sometime on using an airbrush for people new to it, that would be really good
I'm 5 years late to this party but just the idea for these is pretty impressive let alone the actual execution of the idea. Hats off to the builder!

If the British thought that the Sherman turret with a 17lber was cramped, then it would have been really bad with the 75mm L/70, even with the extension on the back. Maybe it could have worked with a T23 turret.
I used the IDF/French M50 conversion as the basis for these.
@@tankmaker9807 Yuo were right to, as the Chieftain showed in his inside the hatch video, there was a lot of space inside.
The reason the British gun was unweildy is because it had an abnormally large breech.
Nevermind the space lmao. This whole concept is just a concept.
We all know how complicated this already and very heavy. They even bolted more armour so nevermind the field transmission repair and added the notorious panther suspension to make it impossible for field recovery

a common mistake modelers make is the whole "Let's make german tracks appear rusted" in reality all tank tracks that Germany produced from 1933 to 1945 were of a high quality alloy called "Niresist" which in addition to being VERY HIGH QUALITY AND EXPENSIVE. WE'RE EXTREMELY RESISTANT TO RUST
if Ni means Nickel, then yeah, those things would never rust, get dirty maybe but never rust

Not only that, but towards the end of the war those late-model German tanks generally did not survive for long. The last batch of King Tigers didn't even leave the city they were built in, some were destroyed within days or weeks. Throughout the war, the average German tank was probably only a year or so old. They'd probably still have new car smell. This is a sticking point with me because on the forums and reddit you see SO MANY models that look like museum pieces - IE what they look like after sitting for 70 years! Would they be muddy? Yes. Would they look like they were parked at the bottom of the sea? No!

Damn, what a badass tank(s)! I have a buddy who planned on scratch building an M26 "Ultra Pershing," essentially a super Pershing with even more armor and the Jagdtiger 128mm cannon. Wish I could build something like that

Love your videos. I would love it if you did the Tamiya M113 APC or ACAV in the Vietnam configuration. It would also be cool if you did a white wash on a Sherman. I'd like to see you build the Tamiya M4A3 Sherman 105mm.

The second model based on the E8 Sherman and retaining its suspension and engine deck is far better, in my opinion. On the first kit only the greater number of bolts on the frontal armour works better. The paint scheme of the first model is outstanding.

Andy, please suggest to your friend a project based on a Panther [or perhaps a King Tiger?] modified for resumed production by the Allies in 1946 -new engine, revised fittings and hatches, keep the gun but revise the turret, etc. Your video has a unique and creative subject with great painting ideas, and is the perfect incentive to work on a Sherman on a snow day! Thanks!
There is an old thread on Armorama about the IDF using Panthers. I have a project to "upgrade" a Panther using the M26 as a parts source to improve the suspension, tracks and final drive as a post war "Western" Panther.
Randy, thanks for the reply! You could do a whole series of "what-ifs" involving the IDF and German WWII armor. If Israel had Panthers in 1948... wow. I hope Andy will feature your "western" Panther in the future. Just wondering - In 1944, could a Panther or Pzkw. IV long-barreled turret actually have been mated to a Sherman or M10 hull? I could imagine some field depot trying such a dramatic [and unauthorized] modification. It would make for a very interesting diorama!
Not sure if it's the camera or not but the finished camo on the second Sherman looks a bit hazy. Either way, I love the two Shermans, they both look amazing.

Hello Andy; I really enjoyed this video which led to watching a few more of your other stuff. I thought about how would I do the technique you did with the geometric design. I want to do something like that for a 1:48 Tamiya Panther. So I see you're located just up the road from me...I'm in Tucson. I don't make it up to Phoenix much unless when I'm traveling to L.A., and have to add you to my stops when in town. Looks like my youngest boy and I will be making up to attend the Modelcon II. Hope to visit your shop soon. Oh, last thing, I'm a BIG 1:48 scale WWII armor builder...have you done any videos on this scale/period? Thanks again.

How do you airbrush Tamiya acrylic paints? How much paint vs how much thinner? What air pressure? Stuff like that.
There were many ideas to upgrade the sherman, one concept would have seen a sharper glacis as with these but during testing it was rejected due to it protruding beyond the tracks in the front.
I think the coolest late war “Frankenstein” tanks has to be the super Pershing. A panther frontal plate as extra gun mantlet armor is just so badass

On the historical "what-if"-note.. Would it really be possible to put on that much armour on the Sherman-chassi without making the tank slow and heavy? With the Shermans hight it would make an even more easy target than it already was?
stuff like this would drastically affect the Sherman's mobility, but the Sherman chassis was quite rugged and could take some really heavy modification/up-armouring.

Most tanks at the time had top speeds around 30 mph, but yes, way too heavy. Luckily for me this is fantasy!

Nice paint jobs, though they never were made I think those long barreled 75 mm guns from the panther would of problem been a lot better then home of the guns we had, last to a degree

Those cardboard masks will not protect you from paint, only a proper respirator will

The tanks are both virtually blind tho :P just wanted to mention that- there are no viewports are on the commander's hatch slits on both tanks(i forgot what to call them all of a sudden), the only exception may be the turret cannon scopes, and what seems to be a driver's periscope in front of the turret, but that's still just one viewport... XD still pretty cool design tho!
FGG01 maybe the model designers just didnt make actual viewports more obvious with actual drilled holes...? XD thx for the info X3 i didnt knoww that

There was one possible 'what if' addition that could have been added at the modellers discretion;Perhaps a very large aerial recognition flag or a brightly coloured turret roof because although we would all have been deeply in the doo doo on the ground it would be fair to say the Russkis might have been in deep doo doo in the air.
These two models look brilliant as they are and such an addition probably couldn't improve them just possibly immerse them further into a 46 environment.
Andy, what is the size of the masking tape? 2mm or 3mm or 5mm?
The Sherman w/ the HVSS suspension looks more like a Hybrid of an Easy Eight and a British Firefly.
This is a great theoretical exercise, but I agree with Scottish below-- talk about cramped turret. The Chieftain would not approve.
What I would like to see is that experimental, one off M4A3 that had a Pershing turret on it that was actually built. Comparatively, US tankers ranked the HE round from the 75mm as the best, the 90mm round as second best and the 76mm round third. Since over 80% of targets were "soft" what would've the war looked like if rather than producing the Pershing, they went with the M4A3 with HVSS and the Pershing turret in the fall of '44?
The camouflage for the M4A3E8-Panther hybrid looks very British.

The second Sherman looks like the real article, and the likely amalgamation of tech. That's because the Sherman's tracks, suspension, engine, transmission, hull etc were readily available and very reliable. However that 75mm German gun would be an excellent upgrade and a fine addition to a Sherman Easy Eight. It also kind of follows reality as eventually all of the modern tanks in the West would have German Rheinmetall guns like the US M1 Abrams or the British Challenger 2. Even the Israeli Merkava tanks have German Rheinmetall smoothbore 105mm guns on them.
