1) 1922 2) The Mist 3) The Body 4) Mr. Harrigan’s Phone 5) If It Bleeds 1922 is one of the few books I’ve read that has actually given me nightmares it was traumatizing.
I just finished The Langoliers and I loved it! Have a feeling going to love whole collection in Four Past Midnight. My first King Short Story collection…I need them all!! Lol
The Breathing Method is a criminally underrated novella in my opinion. I never understood how this book would get so much hate. I actually liked it the most in Different Seasons. And obviously we do know good how the first 3 novellas are.
Have you done anything on the collection "Stephen King Goes to the Movies?" It's a reprint anthology of King stories that were made into movies with King's intros and comments about how he thought the movie versions of the stories worked.
I know it well - I’ve got two copies on my shelf! I’ve not done an episode on it, but I am using it when I get to movies covered in that book…I read from King’s but about Children of the Corn on my episode, and I think I’ve referenced his top 10 from that book too 👍
@@DaveReadsKing They’d rather push the same tired short fiction that hasn’t inspired a single student in over ten years. With The Body, I was told it wasn’t appropriate because the kids cuss too much. They’re twelve year old boys. They should have a vocabulary that would make any priest drop his Bible
Your reviews or so thoughtful and informed. I like the way you just say you like something without arrogance. The only one I really disagree with is Library Policeman. I loved it. I was a prosecutor for many years (retired now) and found it all relevant. Very well written. But, I feel the same way about Apt Pupil-totally unnecessary in some parts although I recognize it as a good story. Here is my list of top 15 based on your pool of novellas: 1) Life of Chuck; 2) The Library Policeman; 3)Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption; 4) The Body; 5) The Mist; 6) The Breathing Method; 7) LMYC; 8) Hearts in Atlantis; 9) Gwendy’s Button Box; 10) Blind Willy; 11) UR (loved the premise and Kindles, lol); 12) Sundog; 13) Mr. Harrigan’s Phone; 14) A very Tight Place (just too gross); 15) Apt Pupil. Have not read Elevation or If it Bleads.
@@DaveReadsKing oooooooh ok that makes sense now. I haven’t actually read all of the dark tower books only the first. There is a channel called other worlds than these and that’s why I got mixed up 👍
Ok, so here is my top 10 with a couple of caveats first - I've not read all of his novellas (shamefully still haven't read The Body yet, but I've seen the film a few times) and also I'm including the stories in Full Dark, No Stars. It's my favourite collection, so to hell with the official website!! Anyway, here goes... 1. The Mist 2. 1922 3. The Langoliers 4. Apt Pupil 5. A Good Marriage 6. If it Bleeds 7. The Library Policeman 8. Big Driver 9. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption 10. Dolan's Cadillac (I consider this a novella, and it's my list, ner ner) I haven't read any of Hearts in Atlantis yet, it's never appealed to me, but I'm sure I'll get around to it. And Life of Chuck is the only one from If It Bleeds I've not read, bizarrely. Anyway, I plan to read that once I'm finished Revival.
That’s a tough question! I think the book edges it but it’s one of the few instances with King where they are really close to each other in excellence. Which do you prefer?
@@DaveReadsKing I have the same opinion. Glad I'm not the only one. I did see the movie first, and then I read the book. I wasn't even aware that the movie was based on one of his works. Made me love the guy even more when I found out.
Interesting Ranking ... 1. The Body 2. The Mist 3. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption 4. Low Men in Yellow Coats 5. Breathing Method 6. Apt Pupil 7. 1922 8. Blockade Billy 9. Elevation 10. Little Sisters of Eluria Uhm, yes, I did the list without looking up, what the novellas are. I really liked "Ur", but I don't know if I liked it enough for the Top Ten. "Hearts in Atlantis" could also be in this ... perhaps I should reread "Life of Chuck" - First time I thought more like: Uh, that is weird!
What should I read for my third Stephen King!? I read Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption first and Pet Sematary (finished that last night at midnight...yup didn't sleep after that 😂). Not sure what to read next 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ BUT I love Stephen King and I'm ready for more!
@DaveReadsKing Awesome thanks so much. I have Different Seasons and looking forward to working on that too. What other short story or novella books like Different Seasons would you recommend??
@quinncrochet19 honestly? All of them! Night Shift and Skeleton Crew are great for spooky stuff, Everything’s Eventual and You Like It Darker are both incredible, while Full Dark No Stars is nasty and gripping
Chuck is such a well written story, Lowmen is a cracker, buy hey...The Body is such an evocative, well put together, beautiful story, how can you argue against it.
I really need to get into king's short story collections this year
Night Shift is a great place to start
I have different seasons, from a Buick 8 and hearts in atlantis
Really glad I found your channel!
Thank you!
Hey Dave great video one of my favorite Stephen King novellas is the long novella Lowmen in yellow coats
Great choice - that one is excellent!
@@DaveReadsKing trust me I was crying by the end
@@DaveReadsKing also did you pick 19 as the number for your reasons because it's an important number in Stephen King's books
I've Been Waiting for this for a long time...... Thank You❤
You’re welcome!
1) 1922
2) The Mist
3) The Body
4) Mr. Harrigan’s Phone
5) If It Bleeds
1922 is one of the few books I’ve read that has actually given me nightmares it was traumatizing.
Nice choices!

Nice! If you enjoy this one you’ll *love* the rest of them!
Apt pupil is superb. Very dark but utterly gripping.
So dark!
The Breathing Method is a criminally underrated novella in my opinion. I never understood how this book would get so much hate. I actually liked it the most in Different Seasons. And obviously we do know good how the first 3 novellas are.
I agree, and depending on what mood I’m in that one often sits third or second in my Different Seasons ranking - such a stellar book!
Oh! I grabbed "Elevation" several months ago and I'd forgotten about it! Have to read it! Thanks for the reminder! -----mike

@@DaveReadsKing Half the fun is reading his introductions, especially that "Children of the Corn" has probably inspired the most bad movies!
😂
Well I'll be. You were right. There truly is more from you than just your stellar series.
Thank you very much!
It’s hard to beat The Body. I’ve been begging them to put it in the Creative Writing reading curriculum at my university for 2 years with no avail.
Academics - don’t know great writing when it’s staring them in the face!

Exactly! That sounds so frustrating - The Body is arguably the best coming of age story ever put to paper
@@DaveReadsKing agreed
I'm currently reading the mist and loving it
It’s a banger!
My favorite novella is
Big driver from full dark no stars I also enjoyed the movie adaptation
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nice! Although not a novella according to King’s website! 🤷🏻♂️ even though it clearly is!
Did the official website completely forget that Full Dark No Stars existed? 🤔 well, Okay, then 😂 great list of course
Ha! It has all four of those ones listed as short stories not novellas, which is wild!
Elevation was a nice read
Indeed - very uplifting (pun intended)!
Great video. The body is my favourite. So engaging.
Just a perfect story!

Four past midnight is great theme wise. How is the execution that i have to see. Haven't read it yet. Im looking forward to read it

It definitely is - number 4 on this list of memory serves me correctly?
Blockade billy I enjoyed. Not a baseball fan though.

The Body..really?😐
Yep! That’s my favourite and this, obviously, is my personal ranking. What’s your favourite?
