Hey, wanted to say thanks for the awesome videos. I watch during my breaks and lunch at work and it makes the days a little easier. It's nice to see something light and fun without all the screaming that other RUclipsrs do. Thanks!
That's Joe's. :) But thanks! I cut it out from a Sega Challenge newsletter and fortunately it was printed at the exact same size as the box art, but in color. I added extra flair with a red marker and yellow highlighter. Truly professional. :)
I love how you can hear Joe's laugh in the background at about 8:10 when Dave is pretending to be angry. It's little things like that that make me love this show.
I can't remember everything we said in this video but yeah we know what MIDI is (I've used it before and fiance still uses it to this day). I likely said it in regards to "the music is Playstation MIDI" or something like that, meaning chiptunes (aka instructions for each instrument rather than a streamed recording). I'm almost tempted to rewatch this video to find out!
I wish we could do it more. I'm gonna keep hounding on Dave until he relents to my will of returning to weekly episodes, with a few weeks off here and there.
Burst out laughing at the deadpan joke about the result of your baldness. Only gaming channel I like. Nice and low key. No bullshit. Just pure reviews and not such an obsession with being overly jokey. Keep it up.
12:41 I luv how Joe barely flinches while taking CD shrapnel(probably unexpectedly lol) to the side of the head! I've done this an immediately regretted breaking a good game after being shot in the eye with a piece of it!😤💥💿🤛🏻
We have both. A Saturn episode is planned but I can't tell you when it will be made. We don't have enough Neo Geo games to make an episode based on that system, unfortunately.
I'm surprised Super Star Wars on the SNES wasn't mentioned. The three games (based on the trilogy) are some of the hardest games I have ever played. I don't even know how I beat Return of the Jedi, with the Escape the Deathstar stage being near impossible. Well at least I got further than I did in Battletoads (one day I will beat you stage 3...) haha.
Andres Ulloa Even using a Game Genie the Super Star Wars games were freaking hard. I remember rage-quitting Super Star Wars the first time I played it on the level where you have to jump and climb the platforms on the sandcrawler.
Zhaleh Farrokhzād Haha oh wow, you know a game is hard when even cheating is hard, haha. The first one was harder in the sense you couldn't save game. I got up to the boss in Escape from Mos Eisley (remember the giant enemy spaceship from the movie? I don't, hahaha) and yeah, didn't get further than that. I recently replayed a few. Could not get past the first level, lol.
+Andres Ulloa Maybe because I was still young (and a glutton for punishment) but I never had trouble with Super Star Wars. Now Empire and Jedi kicked my butt.
FallicIdol Haha. For me, I made it to Escape from Mos Eisley on original, Darth Vader on Empire, and managed to clock Jedi. But yet, I replayed Return of the Jedi, and couldn't even get past stage 2. These games don't kid around, lol.
The main reason why Rayman on the PS1 is so difficult is because your lives aren't saved with your save file. Every time you start your lives are back to default. Still remember playing the first time and having dozens of lives. Saved my game, came back the next day, and all my lives were gone 😭 I believe there are versions that do save your lives. Maybe the GBA or PC version? Never tried them myself.
I actually did an article comparing the TG-16 and Genesis versions of Exile for sega-16.com and talked about how that stuff was removed (and showed pics). They kept it in the US Turbo version and nobody's life was ruined.
People never elaborate on why Battletoads is difficult. They only showcase level 3. EVERY level after the third one is much more difficult and levels like 9 and 12 are nearly unbeatable.
Objectively, from a purely gameplay perspective they may be harder but does it really matter, though? If level 3 is already unbeatable to so many people, how much MORE unbeatable can the later stages be?
I've been watching your videos for a week and you guys are amazing, this video made me think about car battle games like Twisted Metal, the 2nd game it's nearly unfair... every enemy really just concentrates on you instead of randomly battling each other! But also that's the fun of the game! You vs the world... with wheels. Would you please make a video about car battle games? Keep the fun work
One game that I find frustrating is a 2.5D 'shmup' called Einhänder, brought to us by Sony and Square for the PS1. Like most shmups, there has to be some challenge to the game, and of course this one, gave that to me. Full f***ing force. As much as I love this game like everyone else, I never beated it. There's only 7 stages, and the farthest I've gotten to is Stage 4. I tried my best not to get hit, but it was like bullet hell in that stage. I think you were only given like, 10 continues and then that's it. Either way, it's one of my favorite shoot em ups, and I highly recommend it.
The Rocket Gamer I feel your pain! The intro in stage 4 is absurdly hard. But eventually I made it through. Surprise, surprise, the boss is _just as tough_...
Im very glad i found your guys videos, i really enjoyed your video since it has great editing, shows old retro games back in the days and you guys explaining the history of the consoles and show off the great titles the Sega Dreamcast had!! Thanks guys!
I still feel you deserve a lot more views than you get. I've convinced my friends to watch and we all love the show. Frustrating games were a part of our youth. As much as we got mad, we loved to push through and beat them. I was hoping to see either Mischief Makers or Quest 64 on here. Both of those games I loved but man, I use to get so mad at them (I think my copy of Quest 64 has a mark or two from an "accidental" collision with the wall). Great episode as always :)
As you progress further into Shining Wisdom, you get ranged attacks from the magic orbs you will receive. It makes the game much less frustrating. Rayman is one of the hardest games I have ever played! I'm 78% through the Saturn version, and I don't know if I will ever beat it. It is one of the most beautiful 2d games ever made, addictive as hell, and very frustrating!
That game used to really frustrate me as well when I first bought it, but I kept playing and I ended up really loving it. Of course if I try to play it nowadays, I'm gonna die pretty darn fast. :)
Many games which I love are tough as nails and I love them for that. Castlevania 1,2,3 on NES, Rondo of Blood on PC Engine CD, Metroid on NES a GB, Shock Troopers and Magician Lord on Neo Geo AES, on PC I am RTS/RPG games guy, who plays Red Alert 2, Warhammer 40000 and Baldur's Gate 2 again and again and loves them to death. Shortly, on consoles I like tough, old fashion, arcade-like games, on PC more strategic, bigger, story-driven pieces. But must be old, not modern, casual title for first-graders.
We know that! But the SNES can only scale a single background layer, not sprites. Therefore the Super Nintendo couldn't do anything on the level of Batman Returns for the Sega CD, neither could the Neo Geo. That's why we mentioned those two systems, because they are known for their scaling, but they're more limited in certain aspects than most people think.
I remember my friends & I getting together playing Battletoads. We used to get to the point where we'd want to yank the hair out of our heads because of Stage 3's hover bike stage. Just when you thought you were clear of it, then you have the surfing stage on Stage 5. After clearing that, then it was the snake stage, which is beyond frustrating. Even with an infinite lives or energy cheat (with the Game Genie), I haven't been able to successfully clear it.
Great job guys, as usual! I think the only game I've played out of the ones you said were frustrating is Ghosts N' Goblins, and that is incredibly hard. LOL @ ending! Nice of Dave to take those games off of your hands so as to alleviate your frustration.
Solstice is an amazing game. It took me weeks to get the hang of it, but once you're in the rhythm you can beat it in about 20 minutes. The graphics and music are A+++
Shining in the darkness for Genesis really pissed me off at times. With no idea where I was going at times, waaaaaaay too many random encounters, and it being very difficult to progress in the beginning, I almost gave up on it. Glad I didn't because it was a really rewarding dungeon crawler.
Well, yes and no. It does require depth perception but depth is actually eliminated from the isometric perspective since there is no vanishing point. That way it is easier for the designers to trick you. There's some game on the PSN that's based around this trickery.
Basically any of the games in the Tales of RPG series should be on this list. They're immensely entertaining but there's A LOT of unhinted at sidequesting that you should do in order to make certain bosses easily beatable. Otherwise, you're just presented with an out of nowhere difficulty curve that kicks your ass over and over and over and over again.
I got this one level in mind on a racing game - it's the third to last level in Stars Wars Episode 1: Racer on the N64 - the whole stage is on a track that's floating in air and you win the Bozzie Baranta character when you win the track...anyway, I had to hook a game shark up to my N64, through an add on game pack adapter, specifically to help beat that game...I imagine that the level could be beaten legitimately on your own, but it would require literally hours of practice so you don't fall off into oblivion - either that, or abnormally quick reflexes.
Talking of SMS shooters, I had Blade Eagle as a kid and found that really frustrating. While it doesn't have not as much shit flying around at the same as Power Strike, it compensates by having a dual-altitude flying system. Pretty cool concept in theory, but with or without the 3D glasses it's extremely hard to judge which projectiles are at the same altitude as you and need dogding, so in the end you just end up trying to dodge them all.
The only game I ever broke in frustration is Bart's nightmare for snes. Threw my controller at the cartridge while it was still in the snes and the cartridge broke apart and inside it was all cracked in half. I was so scared my parents would ground me so I took it in my back yard woods and buried it hahaha. It's still there to this day.
Almost all shooters that takes all your power-ups away when you die, leaving you only with the ability to use harsh language on your enemies as you desperately try to avoid them while moving at the pace of an asthmatic sloth. I get it with arcade shooters (they had to make you put more money in the machine), but shooters designed for consoles and computers really had no excuse for this.
As someone who enjoys classic Castlevania games and embrace their difficulty, I was absolutely floored by Super Ghosts n Goblin's difficulty. Gave up after 30 minutes of dying in the first "level" (that long stretched pathway). Enemy patterns are just unforgiving, and the movement is quite challenging to adept to.
Time Lord on NES. It has a 25 minute time limit to beat the whole game... and the second boss takes friggin' 10-15 minutes to beat!!! So much for ever seeing the rest of the game!
The guy in Solstice looks just like the bear in Crystal Castles. I will die here on this hill, not budging a single inch, not even when confronted with side by side images. Solstice is clearly the evolution of Crystal Castles, and if xe took off that trenchcoat, we would see the bear beneath.
Power Strike was eventually sold in stores. I remember seeing it in more than one Toys R Us back in the dying days of the Master System (in the US anyway, I know it went on longer in weird places like the UK and Brazil), It still had that cheapo uncolored box, though. Even the little flap over the tickets TRU used back in those days had it uncolored.
To be fair, isometric games oftenhave clues as to their depth perception, such as counting the height of the blocks in Solstice, and a copy of the orb in Equinox.
That Shining Wisdom game, you pretty much hit it right on the head with your review...spot on...I played it and.....I just dont know...decent storyline, but...I guess I'll try it again...thanx again guys!
One game that really frustrates me is Jimmy Neutron vs. Jimmy Negatron for the GBA. It was one of the games I got with my GBA eleven years ago, and to this day I haven't even gotten close to beating it. The reason is, in order to save it you have to type in "system" into some password thing. The only problem is, you don't start out with all of the letters, and you get more by beating different levels, and they are hard!
You lied! You didn't subscribe. I get e-mails for every subscription and I don't see yours. I read each one longingly and print them out. I click on your username and it says "Channel not available" (been getting that a lot lately even with subscription mails I do get). Still, I'd just rather assume you lied and are trying to break our hearts! :(
The absolutely most frustrating game I ever remember playing was The City of Lost Children for the Playstation. I rented it as a young teenager and my sister, my dad, and I probably logged about 16 hours of gameplay over the weekend and not one of us could figure out what the first thing we were supposed to do. OOOOHHHHHH and Altered Space for the Game Boy. It was an isometric game made by the same people who made Solstice that you mentioned in your video. I have tried to play it a hundred times over the years and I have never gotten past the third level.
at 15:23 the shop owner asks, "What is your pleasure?" and sells Coca, Cananavis, Hareesh and Joyaco. Are these supposed to be Cocaine, Cannabis, Hashish and Tobacco?
Fun fact i almost have no problems with the Adventures of Batman & Robin. I practiced a lot but sometime i even reach the last stage without losing any lives!😊
The trick to beating Power Strike is to use weapon #1. With three #1 power-ups (not counting the one you start with) it becomes strong enough to destroy even the "orange" enemy bullets. Additionally, because there's no time limit, it'll stay powered-up through the whole game (or until you die). There are two #1 power-ups in level one and, I believe, the third one is located near the beginning of level 2. This is how I finally beat Power Strike after five years of trying (back in 1993).
Snake Rattle & Roll for Mega Drive. It was the first game I got after getting my own console and it took me 18 years just to get to the final boss. And now I'm stuck there!
Hey guys the Rayman soundtrack is so awesome and the tracks on the PC version are longer. If i remember correctly are listenable straight from the game CD. AU!
really happy to enjoy another one of your updates guys, and it was an interesting one as always. The Master System Power Strike shooter looks great! And I never knew the genesis' Batman and Robin had a CD version with driving stages. You're doing great, but you still need more views for this great show! What's wrong with us viewers? :P
The little end skits at the end of your videos are probably my favorite part of Game Sack. So funny.. You guys should consider doing some kind of like sitcom-type episode sometime! As for frustrating games, the first thing that springs to mind is F-Zero GX. I was 16 when I played it I believe, and that game taught me to swear like a sailor.. Like, I knew the words already, but made a point of not saying them myself. Yeah..that changed while playing the GX story mode. I beat the entire game, but damn.. That took some serious freaking effort. Shit..
I really did just subscribe after watching this episode, I been watching a few Game Sack episodes and while i may not agree with everything, I still enjoy the episodes :)
I remember My Hero on the SMS causing me to rage quit many times. And it came on a card instead of Cartridge. It’s like Sega was encouraging you to snap it in half
Dragon Force really is frustrating. The concept is really cool, I love that there are multiple characters with their own mini stories, the sprites are amazing and I really wanted to enjoy the game, especially since I spent $100 on it. While I do play it from time to time, the difficulty makes me turn it off every time, I can't even get past the second battle on all of the characters. This is sad because I love Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Advance Wars and those games are all great at breaking you in and explaining how to properly play the game but Dragon Force just throws you into the water with sandbags tied to your feet.
Any fighting game that has a ridiculously overpowered boss. Bonus points if he can do supers anytime he wants, has a move or combo that takes 80% of your life, is playable only as a weakened version if at all, doesn't give you any rematches if you lose, or reacts to your moves as soon as you push the button.
Solstice had a cheat code that gave you 99 lives and every potion. It was the only you could beat that game, plus the music for both that game and Equinox were done by Tim Follin. The man had a strange approach to music with regards to trying to create an atmosphere with his music.
Some of my most frustrating games are Battletoads, Ninja Gaiden, Land stalker(another Isometric rpg for Genesis), R-Type...the list goes on. But they are mostly frustrating for good reasons. Good video as always.
F-Zero GX, It's an amazing racing game. But oh my God, some sections in that game are insane difficult. Super fast jumps and insane loops. But a damn fine game in the series, shame they never did make anymore games in that series.
I'm with Dave--I think Panorama Cotton is frustrating. But I still want it! I paused the video at the beginning so that I could buy Steam Gear Mash. Thanks!
Atomic Runner for the Mega Drive is a REALLY frustrating game! Check it out sometime but bring the tissue box along for when you start crying because it's unbeatable.
I simply neglected to mention it. On a technical level, the PC Engine CD was the highest memory (with SystemCard3.0 or ArcadeCard), and the largest colour palette of any mainstream console at the time. There's no scaling, and only one scrolling layer. But that's okay, as it's quite easy to program for the console.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES. I've got that game on the Wii Virtual Console. Anyway the dam level with the electric seaweed is so... FREAKIN'... CHEAP!
since no one has called it, the beginning clip of power strike has an uncanny resemblance to the first boss in The Guardian Legend. And as the clip goes, the shots and power ups look similar as well. Did some digging.....both were developed by Compiled.
Majora's Mask is a favorite of mine but I found it so frustrating when I was younger, as did 90% of the people k know who played it. But now I love how hostile the game is to the player. Also the second Zelda for NES was brutal because of the way it puts you back at the beginning when you die. I remember Dragon Warrior also being quite frustrating, although I haven't played it since I was a kid so who knows
My most frustrating game are Kid Icarus (I have problems to beat the first level.) and The Haunting for the Genesis. The Haunting for the Genesis is not particually, but most time rather boring. Thats until the end of the 4th house. Until then there is no need to fight, but than the game throws a bossfight at you. I needed month to only figure out, what I'm supposed to do. Then you get the ending and all the frustration builded up leads to... no reward at all.
Hey, wanted to say thanks for the awesome videos. I watch during my breaks and lunch at work and it makes the days a little easier. It's nice to see something light and fun without all the screaming that other RUclipsrs do. Thanks!

The comment is so old that timestamps like 8:10 didn't work??
I can't believe there was once a world with weekly gamesack, it must have been a golden age.

Perhaps try harder....
@@Walczyk They must have deleted it. What did they say?
I would love that
You pressed Dave too hard. I miss him. :(
This is by far my favourite show on YT. So down to earth and always funny. I love the clips at the end!
Burst out laughing at the deadpan joke about the result of your baldness. Only gaming channel I like. Nice and low key. No bullshit. Just pure reviews and not such an obsession with being overly jokey. Keep it up.
thenu dont watch pushing up roses or lgr at all do u no u dont so shut ur face hater and have some hateraid
8:10 Dave's reaction here is absolutely hilarious and perfect!
Solstice really could have benefited from a shadow underneath your character so that you could see where you were when jumping.
That's why the floor is a grid like that. I find it crazy how Dave honestly thought he would make those jumps.
12:41 I luv how Joe barely flinches while taking CD shrapnel(probably unexpectedly lol) to the side of the head! I've done this an immediately regretted breaking a good game after being shot in the eye with a piece of it!😤💥💿🤛🏻
I love Game Sacks. Videos are longer than most I watch but you guys are very entertaining even the new ones with just Joe.
We have both. A Saturn episode is planned but I can't tell you when it will be made. We don't have enough Neo Geo games to make an episode based on that system, unfortunately.
Same here. We'll be talking about that one HOPEFULLY sometime soon. The RPG episode is taking quite a while.
I played Demons' Souls and it was awesome. For whatever reason, Dark Souls just never appealed to me.
Yes it is! I tried playing it for the Master System episode but I don't think I was able to get past the first or second level.
There are lots of sequels/offshoots, actually. We covered Space Megaforce in a previous episode about SNES shooters.
I'm surprised Super Star Wars on the SNES wasn't mentioned. The three games (based on the trilogy) are some of the hardest games I have ever played. I don't even know how I beat Return of the Jedi, with the Escape the Deathstar stage being near impossible. I play the Super Star Wars games on easy. That said, the first and third games DO contain too many bottomless pits irregardless.

The best way to experience Solstice is to turn the volume all the way up and never leave the title screen.
I did that when i was a young lad
Whoa it's amazing how far this series has come.

I was so scared my parents would ground me so I took it in my back yard woods and buried it hahaha. It's still there to this day.
excellent work! how true it is to be frustrated while waiting two weeks for each episode!
Castlevania will turn you into a gamer. Ghost and Goblins will make you into a man.
iliek XD
True
Time Lord on NES. It has a 25 minute time limit to beat the whole game... and the second boss takes friggin' 10-15 minutes to beat!!! So much for ever seeing the rest of the game!
Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus were incredibly frustrating for me. I love hard games though. Makes you feel like you truly accomplished something.
Calm down, don't type up that manifesto. Wiser words have never been spoken to the youtube community.
Of course! That's how you're supposed to do it. You shouldn't push the tray closed if you want it to last.
I miss Isometric games. My favorite from Sega was Lanstalker.
You know whats frustrating? watching you hold all of those rare games at the end of the video. UNHAND THEM YOU CREEP!
To be fair, isometric games oftenhave clues as to their depth perception, such as counting the height of the blocks in Solstice, and a copy of the orb in Equinox.
Seems to be about 50-50 so far.
That Shining Wisdom game, you pretty much hit it right on the head with your review...spot on...I played it and.....I just dont know...decent storyline, but...I guess I'll try it again...thanx again guys!
GOD i gotta agree completely about solstice, though i don't think you've listened completely to the title music (ITS GOOOOD)
ok, i gotta ask, do you acually noticed that the game on 15:23 actually is selling drugs? looool Loved that twist in the shop xD
Cool. Now we just need to get you to agree with everything and all will be hunky-dorey. :)
I always thought Battletoads was pretty easy until level 6, which is still doable. Then... holy crap.
The only problem is, you don't start out with all of the letters, and you get more by beating different levels, and they are hard!
hell yeah dude, i was looking for a comment saying that. I loved the colors and shading, looked like official art work!
Power Strike 2 seems like corrected the difficulty of the first game ...
Eddie Arafat Yes, I noticed the same thing.
Saturn in general, but who knows?
Fun fact i almost have no problems with the Adventures of Batman & Robin. I practiced a lot but sometime i even reach the last stage without losing any lives!😊
Never noticed how orchestral the original theme was :P I love revisiting these videos and Dave’s pretty face
"When I call the game stores, they never have Battletoads..." I see what you did there lol :-)
5:41 I... uh... What... How does that work in an action RPG?
F-Zero GX,
It's an amazing racing game.
Thanks!
I'm glad I'm not the only person that wasn't real good at star wars arcade for the 32x.
I appreciate Solstice being mentioned here as a sort of half-victory, although it really should have been on the awful games episode
FREAKIN'... CHEAP!
Congrats to the YT partnership, you deserve it.
since no one has called it, the beginning clip of power strike has an uncanny resemblance to the first boss in The Guardian Legend. And as the clip goes, the shots and power ups look similar as well. Did some digging.....both were developed by Compiled.
Yep! Pretty much all of Compile's shooters are of a similar vein if not directly related.
