Have you addressed the hand wave motorcyclist give each other? I noticed there’s an etiquette of Harley waves at Harley…some Harleys wave at crotchrockets…trikes wave at everybody…BMW waves at no one. And so forth, it would make for an interesting study.
Is this a global thing? I don't see it so much in UK videos. I tend to wave to everyone (2 finger) and for the Spyder guys I throw them a third finger.
@@OldNotDead-Club Yep do a video - ive noticed it, most give you a nod but almost never Harley riders, I think this is a major reason other riders think their wankers and dont like to associate with them, perhaps a reason the younger Generation see the Harley thing as Clownish rather than Cool?
I’ve chosen function over form until recently.I’ve never adhered to the “chrome envy” crowd but I do like making my bike look different than others. I will agree Harleys are an artistic expression and they sound great. There is something about people ogling your ride and giving you a thumbs up.
I started on a Honda Magna. First bike. Eventually got a Valkyrie. Finally rode a friend's sportster. My honest opinion was what a total piece of garbage, it's obnoxiously loud, shakes like a paint mixer, and the seat's uncomfortable. Then I read how Harley on year 2 (or maybe year 3) had to engineer their motors to be crappy so that they were loud and shaky. Sounded terrible to me. Then I met a friend who had a Road King. His road king had a matching little bitty trailer that he pulled. It was so beautiful. Every part was finely finished, the motor was not obnoxiously loud, the motor didn't shake like it was trying to escape the frame. Even the hard bags on the back were well done and well painted. Sweet gods in Asgard that was a beautiful, but tough looking bike. When he revved the motor and his wife squirmed a bit I decided the bike probably had just the right amount of vibration. When I took it for a test ride and i could see stuff in the rearview side mirrors I knew the shake wasn't too bad. Now it's on my bucket list. One day I want a Road King like that one. When form follows function, but time has been spent to make that form decorative or appealing, I think that's what does it for me. Function first, but then form is like icing on the cake.
Yes I agree with you, Harley Davidson’s are beautiful. I’ve spent my life believing that it’s function over form, Bauhaus if you like. But for some time now I’ve been craving a front mudguard chrome bumper and it’s coming to a head. I want this thing so bad it hurts, it’s only about $100 but I’ve always believed that if it does nothing - get rid of it. This little chrome bar is a nothing thing, but I’m going to do it. This is a major philosophical shift for me, and that’s the agony of it. But I’ve lusted after this thing for so long, I just have to do it. Will it open a floodgate though. I don’t really want to customise my whole bike (this time). It’s time< I’m going to do it for the ‘harmony’ in my life. I’ve,over Harley for decades and right or wrong, I’m doing it. The sound of a hog is just so manly. It’s bliss and I adore it. My Ducati Darmah sounds good too, different but good, especially on the over run. If you say Ducati repeatedly, it makes the same sound as the bike. Ducati, the name says it all. I should be a copy writer ! But the offbeat staccato of a big hog is bliss.

Shes got to be beautiful (to me) before I ride her let alone own her. Aesthetics matter to almost everyone and that applies to many parts of our life. Personally I think many classic motorcycles are beautiful, Triumphs, Royal Enfield's, Norton's, Moto Guzzi, some Ducati's, some M/Vs, some Harley's, some BMW's and even 70s/80s JDM's. Royal Enfield's motto is "Built like a Gun since 1901" ie their 2 years older than Harley and been in continual production since then, being at least 1/3rd of the price of a Harley makes them pretty good value especially for new starters with taste for classic looks all being LAMs compatible. I can see RE potentially taking a good deal of Harleys market share in the next few years as the world economy circles the toilet once again. Cafe racers are my weak spot, form definitely over function even more so than Harley, I saw a Tiumph Thruxton in Thailand with a Norton Lyta tank and seat in a rose gold/copper finish, one of the most stunning bikes ive ever seen, some Harleys are beautiful but the Baggers to my eye look shocking and I would be almost embarrassed to be seen on one, the Chrome Soft tails and V-Rods are stunning and something id be eager to give a go one day. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, practicality and price do however make a difference in the real world, its only in the recently opulent West that motorcycles are considered a toy where resources can be squandered to build pieces of art, those days may be at an end unfortunately and I think Harley as a company will be one of the first ones to suffer with RE gunning for it like a Red Heeler hanging off the back end of a cow. Interesting times but lets do our best to keep beauty alive no matter what happens.
I can almost feel the lineage of my 103 when l ride it, l feel all the riders of those previous decades sharing the same wonderful roar of the motor and pride in my machine as theirs. . Guess I should lay off the ‘shrooms 😂 On the RE debate, l had one and it felt just like l feel on my Harley- it is what it is and has a great history. Perfect for pottering and exploring SLOWLY. I’d say the Harley is the big brother of the Bullet.
In 59 years of riding I've owned 90+% of the bike brands built. Some were good, some were not so good and some were a maintenance nightmare. It'sonly been the last 9 -10 years that I've been on Harleys and so far it's been a great run. Are they the best looking bikes ??? ........I think they are and that's all that matters.
i'm not into the group thing, none of my friends ride. i'm more of a loner when it comes to riding but i love my 1980 flh and i recently sold my 02 heritage. i'd like to get a freewheeler sport trike because now i am old and maybe i could get my old lady on it.
And a shout out to all my yummy ladies riding these beautiful machines!!! For all of you in Melbourne see you at the Naked Racer not only is it eye candy the food and staff are amazing also .
Royal Enfield has been in continuous production longer than H-D. And I would argue that the latest models, in particular the Classic 350 is on a par with H-D for the quality of finish and character of feel, but at a fraction of the price.
They had a break in the 70's and then an Indian company took over. They look great but they are slower than ... everything so great it you want to catch up on some reading or sleep as you ride
@@OldNotDead-Club I’m unaware of any break. The Madras factory started production in 1962 and the company in Redditch went tits up in 1970. As far as I’m aware production in India continued uninterrupted. Have you ever ridden one? They’re not as slow as people say they are. The 650 has all the power and torque any reasonable person would ever need in the real world. I own a Classic 350, after owning more powerful bikes I find she has plenty for me with unparalleled character and charm.
@@mockbattles lol maybe i'm not reasonable. I haven't ridden one, but I've ridden a triumph bonneville which has more power than a RE - i found it pleasant but underwhelming. 100hp with lots of torque is about as low as I would want to go. All the Harley's Ive owned were hopped up to at least this. I've also recently owned a Triumph Thruxton R and a z900RS both were fun bikes with about 110hp and loads of torque if i could justify multiple bikes i would have kept them both. It was a technical break for RE they were made under licence in India and when the company went under the Indian licencee purchased the equipment and rights and resumed production. That's my understanding of it.
@@OldNotDead-Club RE claim to be “the oldest Motorcycle company in continuous production.” H-D can at the least make that claim in its original location.
i disagree function over form. ive had baggers with windshields and comfortable seats fore well over 40 years. that said thats also what i find appealing to harleys. ive always liked fl front ends but a wide glide cool springer is also acceptable. i had choppers when i was a kid but comfort over fashion for sure.
@OldNotDead-Club ive got a under the truck tool box where my top box would go to carry my 90# pitbull. its not pretty but it works great. so yeah function.
Function over form = BMW 1200GS 🤢 I'm allowed, I had one (for a very short eyesore time) 😁 I think most Harleys are an equal blend of both function and form😊... Yeah, some Ducatis are pretty and some become pretty ugly pretty quickly 😛Don't mind some classic Japanese sports bikes and some real old Indians and exclusive rare Brit bikes. I don't hate on all Bavarian propellors, In fact the R35 was piece of art 👌.
'Pretty sure I had three points, but I'm tired so here's two. Royal Enfield is the longest continuous running motorcycle manufacturer. "Adventure" Bike owners aren't buying into anything other than that's as close to a Trail Bike anyone can lay their hands on these days. (And expanding on the above for a third point, form tends to blur into function with motorcycles.. e.g. your Gide covers miles better than.. ..a Trail Bike handles poor roads and Winters better than.. )
I agree about form and function lines being blurred. RE closed in the 70s and a company in India that was making bikes under their brand through licencing purchased their equipment and kept the brand rolling - so maybe yes maybe no? Re adventure bike riders YES they like everyone else are purchasing an image.
@@OldNotDead-Club i mean i don't mind looking at them at a show but nothing i would care to ride. a friend of mine had an old knuckle with a super extended fork and i tried riding it and it was rediculous to me. i guess they're more for show. good luck and good ridin to ya.
You talk if function maybe more important than form in racing. So why, in the king of the baggers you picture, do they use those girls bikes (Road Glide)? I can only think it’s to give the opponents some kind of chance 🤷♂️
Personally as someone who prefers modern engines, modern designs and aesthetic, harley Davidson never struck with me. It always felt very artificial about all the freedom, outlaw etc aspect Everyone can be free, why would a harley make it diffrent compared to say a "boring" honda NT700? I just never understood and still don't understand the appeal to get a heavy, slow handling, very expensive to buy and insure(in europe you pay per cc), underpowered and old fashioned bike The whole "masculinity" thing also kinda bugs me. I see a lot of old farts that are overweight and have a bodyfat percentage of a very chubby woman, they don't work out, don't know how to fix their own bikes, yet this image is considered masculine I always think that its good that ppl love their harleys and feel good about owning, riding, modding them. It's just absolutely not my cup of tea
Each to their own, but if you don't understand exciting, inspiring bike vs boring (as per your comment above) what can i say? Plenty of non physical specimens on all types of bikes
@@OldNotDead-Club thats the thing. My definition of excitement and inspiring does not involve large 45° v-twins, vibrations and shouty exhausts Im searching for a reasons aside from very personal and biased ones from harley riders to actually own an ride a harley Have yet to find one But yes. To not let this comment escalate any further. To each their own
Persig's Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance put it differently, aethetics vs function I think. Honda is great but worst at fake aesthetics. Not fond on HD 1250 engine with a facade
Nothing sounds or looks better on the road then a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Hearing sportbikes hit the rev limiter is akin to fingernails on a chalkboard.

Have you addressed the hand wave motorcyclist give each other? I noticed there’s an etiquette of Harley waves at Harley…some Harleys wave at crotchrockets…trikes wave at everybody…BMW waves at no one. And so forth, it would make for an interesting study.
I have a Road King and a GSA, I wave at everyone. We’re all out having fun, I enjoy the company.
Is this a global thing? I don't see it so much in UK videos. I tend to wave to everyone (2 finger) and for the Spyder guys I throw them a third finger.
I have addressed this a million times in comments, maybe its time to do a video.
I guess being a new by to your channel I need to go back and see your prior videos. I wave at everyone too, including the “police ahead” helmet tap
Thanks, you can do a lot with them
Good stuff ✌🏻👍🏻
Thank you
I started on a Honda Magna.
The RK is an awesome bike
I dont think there is a right or wrong, follow your heart and desire

You are correct, thanks Tex
Thanks for the wise words
Of course they are...why else would we give them female names. They are amazingly personal and beautiful in their own form...and to be respected.
Thanks I agree
Female... Like Roadking? 🤔
I can almost feel the lineage of my 103 when l ride it, l feel all the riders of those previous decades sharing the same wonderful roar of the motor and pride in my machine as theirs. .
Guess I should lay off the ‘shrooms 😂
On the RE debate, l had one and it felt just like l feel on my Harley- it is what it is and has a great history. Perfect for pottering and exploring SLOWLY. I’d say the Harley is the big brother of the Bullet.
Thanks for watching
In 59 years of riding I've owned 90+% of the bike brands built. Some were good, some were not so good and some were a maintenance nightmare. It'sonly been the last 9 -10 years that I've been on Harleys and so far it's been a great run. Are they the best looking bikes ??? ........I think they are and that's all that matters.
Lol, you are spot on
Well I consider my two the most beautiful and they just happen to be Harleys, so I have to agree.
Lol thanks
i'm not into the group thing, none of my friends ride. i'm more of a loner when it comes to riding but i love my 1980 flh and i recently sold my 02 heritage. i'd like to get a freewheeler sport trike because now i am old and maybe i could get my old lady on it.
Stay young!
And a shout out to all my yummy ladies riding these beautiful machines!!!
For all of you in Melbourne see you at the Naked Racer not only is it eye candy the food and staff are amazing also .
I should do a video on that lol
@@OldNotDead-Club Yes please❤️
Have you ever reviewed a Yamaha Raider? I am interested to hear your thoughts.
No I haven't had the pleasure
Yep
What's got into you that was great video and editing like you stepped it up thanks
Ps last year I dated her to
lol
@@OldNotDead-Club RE claim to be “the oldest Motorcycle company in continuous production.”
H-D can at the least make that claim in its original location.
Facts don’t care what anyone thinks of them.
That's true
Keep making videos to validate your purchase.
Lol, thanks I almost forgot why I made a YT channel
😂
👍👍⚜⚜
Thank you
i disagree function over form. ive had baggers with windshields and comfortable seats fore well over 40 years. that said thats also what i find appealing to harleys. ive always liked fl front ends but a wide glide cool springer is also acceptable. i had choppers when i was a kid but comfort over fashion for sure.
I like to blend the two - I guess it depends on the bike
@OldNotDead-Club ive got a under the truck tool box where my top box would go to carry my 90# pitbull. its not pretty but it works great. so yeah function.
👊🍻
lol, thanks
Have you seen the new Electra Glide ? 😉
Yep looks great!
It just needs a large enough tank
lol
What about Indian?
They seem ok but it's not the same, maybe in time
Thanks for the great content. I agree with your conclusion. Love my 22 Heritage Classic.
Thanks for watching
Function over form people wear crocs
Lol
Function over form = BMW 1200GS 🤢 I'm allowed, I had one (for a very short eyesore time) 😁 I think most Harleys are an equal blend of both function and form😊... Yeah, some Ducatis are pretty and some become pretty ugly pretty quickly 😛Don't mind some classic Japanese sports bikes and some real old Indians and exclusive rare Brit bikes. I don't hate on all Bavarian propellors, In fact the R35 was piece of art 👌.
So many beautiful bikes, thanks for watching
Re adventure bike riders YES they like everyone else are purchasing an image.
i like harley davidson only but straight up, not the heavy customs.
Thanks, I guess everyone has different tastes. That's the beauty of bike shows like this one
@@OldNotDead-Club i mean i don't mind looking at them at a show but nothing i would care to ride. a friend of mine had an old knuckle with a super extended fork and i tried riding it and it was rediculous to me. i guess they're more for show. good luck and good ridin to ya.
They are great, they look old even new, ooooor is it they look new even when old..?? I like my carbureted soft-deluxe the best though😊…
You talk if function maybe more important than form in racing. So why, in the king of the baggers you picture, do they use those girls bikes (Road Glide)? I can only think it’s to give the opponents some kind of chance 🤷♂️
lol
Personally as someone who prefers modern engines, modern designs and aesthetic, harley Davidson never struck with me. It always felt very artificial about all the freedom, outlaw etc aspect
Everyone can be free, why would a harley make it diffrent compared to say a "boring" honda NT700?
I just never understood and still don't understand the appeal to get a heavy, slow handling, very expensive to buy and insure(in europe you pay per cc), underpowered and old fashioned bike
The whole "masculinity" thing also kinda bugs me. I see a lot of old farts that are overweight and have a bodyfat percentage of a very chubby woman, they don't work out, don't know how to fix their own bikes, yet this image is considered masculine
I always think that its good that ppl love their harleys and feel good about owning, riding, modding them.
It's just absolutely not my cup of tea
Each to their own, but if you don't understand exciting, inspiring bike vs boring (as per your comment above) what can i say? Plenty of non physical specimens on all types of bikes
@@OldNotDead-Club thats the thing. My definition of excitement and inspiring does not involve large 45° v-twins, vibrations and shouty exhausts
Im searching for a reasons aside from very personal and biased ones from harley riders to actually own an ride a harley
Have yet to find one
But yes. To not let this comment escalate any further. To each their own
No two Harley's are the same. That's why.
That's true, thanks
Persig's Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance put it differently, aethetics vs function I think. Honda is great but worst at fake aesthetics. Not fond on HD 1250 engine with a facade
definitely nothing appealing to being folded up on sport bike
So true
If I’m going to folded over in uncomfortable positions it’s going to be because I’m with the little Thai chick down the massage parlour 😂
Form won't get you home as for beauty they all look the same.
Interesting perspective. "they all look the same" means you are either blind, never seen a HD before or a Troll.
Nothing sounds or looks better on the road then a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Hearing sportbikes hit the rev limiter is akin to fingernails on a chalkboard.
Thanks, spot on
