    Maverick/Terrano's are great off roaders. The Nissan TD27 is a legendary engine and just keeps going. The 3.0 Di was very good as well with a bit more power and torque. A good rival was the Isuzu Trooper/Vauxhall Monterey. Very popular with the RAC.

    I bought three of these on the same day in 1995 as a Nissan from Forge Garage when they were an official dealer. Two shorties and a long with the 2.8 turbo engines. I ran the long one. My wife and mother had the other two. I part exchanged a Range Rover 2.4 diesel that I’d owned from new in 1988 and ran for 100,000 miles. Also my mother’s 1987 shorty Shogun and something else, possibly the 1993 Land Cruiser 80.
    Ran the long for about 45,000 miles until the gearbox started to rumble. The last one was run by mum until she couldn’t climb in due to old age and sat far a year or so until I sold it to someone in Gilfachreda, the last house in the long terrace on the way out to the hill. He ran it until last year, towing his Morris minor and a trailer with mini-digger buckets around until 2020. I think it covered about 160,000 miles before the rust caught up with it.
    There’s a 3.0 three door black Terrano next door to me [about a mile away] which has recently been put on a limited use license which means it is now exempt from MOT and can run on red diesel.

    This engine was used in the London Style Fairway Series taxis and the TX1, but without the turbocharger. It was discontinued when the TXII was introduced in 2002, succeeding the TX1 in production from that point on

      There was a company near London that would swap the Nissan engines into the tx2's due to the Ford 2.4l duratorq engines being unreliable in service.

    My Dad had the 1994/ 95 short wheel base Petrol version and it was great! It was probably a little overpowered for a relatively small car but that meant it had plenty of grunt for towing and with the selectable 4wd you could mix it on the motorway too. One winter my Dad had to work on New Year’s Eve and afterwards his Maverick brought him safely home in a blizzard that had lasted all day. I for one was very pleased to see that car. 🚗

    I use a swb 2.7 fitted with tractor tyres for forestry work, unbelievably good off road and fantastic power.

    We do owe a significant debt of gratitude to people that have cherished these types of vehicles. There was a great danger of none of them surviving for us to enjoy now. They were never fashionable and most suffered neglect and consequent rapid decay in their later years.

    In the USA, Ford used the Maverick name from I think 1969 for about then years on a two door and later a 4 door compact. Now they are using it on a very small (U.S. standards) 4 door pick up truck.

    I'm loving these HubNut road tests, I hadn't realised just how much I've missed them. The surprising thing about this car is that it still exists in such great condition because as you said they rotted like a bugger.

    I had a 2001 Terrano II 2 door, as my first 4x4 offroader. I did some serious trails with it, keeping up with friend's Defender. Pajero, and even Toyota Hiluxes. It was the intercooled 2.7 and it was no slouch, had decent power. Sadly parts became overly expensive as in my country it was a fully imported Nissan product with al parts having to be sourced from other countries. It was a great fun vehicle.

    My first car was probably the least impressive turbo-diesel ever made, the VW Jetta ECOdiesel, which only produced 7 more horsepower than the equivalent non-turbo diesel. But as its name suggests, it was done more to improve emissions (it was VW's first diesel with a cat) than for a performance boost. In addition to not having an intercooler, it also did not have any boost enrichment. p.s. Weddings at a coal mining museum? Really?

      The ford 1.8 diesel gained a turbo maybe went from 60 to 70hp but it was no faster top speed.

    I had two Nissan Terrano II's best motor I have ever had. Really good off road. It is a mini Nissan Patrol. The MK.II had an intercooler with a bonnet scoop.

    I’ve got the big brother, the R50 Terrano with the 3.2 turbo diesel. The Nissan engineers did their best, but there’s no hiding the roots of the QD32, it still sounds like a tractor.

    One of these helped me learn about the excess on rented van insurance, when I took the front bumper off it with the side of a long-wheelbase van in a motorway service station car park. Oh, the happy memories...

    Owned the later Ford Maverick aka Mazda tribute. It had the petrol V6 3.0 ltr engine as fitted to Mondeo and Jaguar. Quickest 4 wheel drive I have ever owned. Very quiet and smooth.

      The twin to the Mazda Tribute was the Ford Escape, which is called in the UK 🇬🇧 the Kuga. What an unusual name!

    Great video, informative and very honestly delivered.My wife and I bought our first Terrano In 2004 and it served very well to the point that we bought another. The first one a 1996 model was sold to a local farmer who is still using it on the fields today !!!

    A friend of mine had 3door versions of the Nissan and Ford versions. He tipped the Nissan. Brilliant plug on mens health very important regularly checks are vital saved me.

    That engine was also made in 6 pot form the TD42, found in the Patrol GR Y60. In some places they had turbos too. Very heavy engine , all cast iron, with gear driven camshaft, basically unbreakable. The Australians love them. These engine have been increasing in value over the last 15 years, glad I picked one up when I did, it has been powering my Range Rover for the last 11 years.

    Totally agree with you about going to the doctor as that is how i found out i had a cancerous kidney that was removed just in time as it had gone from stage 2 to stage 6 in a matter of months

    A late friend had a 2.4 petrol but must have been a pre facelift one as it had 4 round lights headlights on the front. That did disintegrate at a rate of knots.

    If you look on the back of any of the plastic mouldings, like door handles, mirrors etc, you can see the Nissan badges next to the part number

    In Australia, the Nissan GQ Patrol was rebadged the Ford Maverick. In exchange, Ford gave the XF Falcon Ute to Nissan which badge engineered it as the Nissan Ute.
    Interesting that Ford/Nissan used the Maverick name for badge engineering in Europe. 🤔

      @@HubNut , very odd. Most of them have now been feralised. Aftermarket forced induction, many getting LS swaps or the 3.8L GM V6. Raised suspensions and M/T tyres. And appearance add-ons suited to being an extra at Bartertown, just down the road from Thunderdome. 😆
      Good solid base to make a relatively cheap off-road tourer that can handle our conditions.

    I haven’t driven one of these for nearly 20 years. I think these are nice looking and from a time when SUVs were “proper” and had decent 4x4 features.

    In the past i had a Fiat Tipo TD and was like, nothing, nothing, turbo noises, everything. Was pretty fun for a 92hp TD. So turbo lag in slow cars is quite fun imo.

    I had a 99 petrol lwb nissan terrano for a couple of years. Being petrol it was quite thirsty, and seemed to go through wheel bearings quite regularly. It was a great lump of a car, but I enjoyed driving it, and was really good in the snow. It eventually rusted through in the engine bay, and was too expensive to repair. Have been looking for a terrano van of late, but not many for sale! Enjoying your content, stay safe, all the best, Brian

    More badge engineering the current Nissan Terrano is a Dacia Duster built in India changed into a weird Nissan .I liked the the three door Ford version a lot.
    I also looked at a Nissan X Trail car but wearing Nissan Terrano badges official.It was a blinged out Japanese import that wouldn't accept a towbar because of the fuel tank is different to the XTrail UK being right under the back bumper.

    Used to sell these new. We used to send one to a local county fair where we entered it into a ploughing contest. It beat everything apart from a Defender. Proper off road ability.

    Back then, I always thought odd the main lights being in the bumper...of course, as time went on and I found out more models doing the same thing, I got used to it. Still, 6-7 year old me was puzzled. 😆
    There must be at least one of these somewhere here in my country, though they were never sold officially.

    When I did a stint at car sales back in the early 90s, I had one of these as my company car/demonstrator. As a junior salesman I usually got a Micra or a Sunny but the other two salesmen thought the Terrano was gutless and didn’t want to drive it. I loved it - did a bit of off-roading and towed a car trailer with it at weekends. Always gave it a good wash before work and nobody was any the wiser. It’s weird the rear door opens the ‘wrong’ way for UK as Japan is the same driving orientation. All the Japanese suvs here in Canada open the ‘wrong’ way for here because of that. These would have been popular here in Canada for winter driving, as the earlier version was in Pathfinder form. Sadly rotted away quickly from the road salt, though.

      Almost a bit ford, opening that way. Fords are built for left hand drive. That's why the cup holders are usually the wrong side of the handbrake. And the rear door on the ecosport also opens the wrong way for the UK

    The Daihatsu 4Trak was much loved here in rural areas - a good mud plugger to lob sheep in the back of and fixable on the farm using basic cutlery. That's a role that seems to have been taken now by high mileage 1st gen Duster 4x4 diesels which fill the same niche

    I've always really liked these and the Mazda-derived generation which followed. I can't remember the last time I saw an example of either generation which is a bit of a shame

    Nissan Terrano a good all round 4x4 I know of a few folk that took there engine out of them and put it into the Navara D22 when the engine blew up. I myself have had the Nissan D22 with the original 2.5 turbo 130 hp found it a good truck. Ford Maverick was a good machine shame about the rust.

    In an old job years ago, we got a whole bunch of Terrano II vans back in the day as some sort of company car taxation dodge due to having less windows (don't ask me how they worked it out). The sales reps had them, and were particularly useful during the "Great White Out of 2010" getting people to work who were stranded. I think the TD27 engine made a good noise and was vaguely similar to a Willis Jeep, they looked the part and worked very well.

    I had a 54 plate one did not like 4 th gear under 40 mph run it on pure veg oil and diesel mix

    Excellent review as always, remember having a brochure for a Maverick when I was a kid. Even as a 11 year old i knew it was not a real ford, but think out of the the two I preferred the Nissan or the Frontera.

    This one brings back some unpleasant memories, of being ferried around in one used as minicab between Barnsley and Manchester Airport. Can't even remember if it was a seven seater, but I do remember it was unpleasantly cramped for the number of passengers and the luggage they tried to squeeze into it at the time.

    My dad had 1993 blue swb 2.7td would pull our boat up the side of a house. Only got rid 20 years later at 86k as we were not using it and the chassis started to rot. Still regret selling it. Sold to a bloke who broke it for spares to send to Africa.

    When you mentioned Maverick I thought you were going to drive a classic US compact made from 1969-1977!
    I have ridden in a US spec Pathfinder, quite nice, as well as the Nissan Pick-up.
    I like this; nicely specd, and lovely sound turbo diesel.
    Because vehicles like this are prone to flip, US mandated stability control to control SUV vehicles for flipping on its roof in avoidance maneuvers.
    Ford did badge engineer another Nissan product, the Nissan Quest, which was the Mercury Villager minivan.

    Great vid again Ian, I liked the Maverick/Terrano when I first saw them in the 90’s, I liked its chunkiness and rounded edges in comparison to some other 4x4’s of the time, the Maverick is 100% badge engineering, it’s a total Nissan vehicle, there was some dislike for it I think due to its sluggishness of performance.
    Not so many about these days.

    Had a D21 pick up for a while until the load bed rotted out, not helped by a very heavy, old Atco bowling green mower in the back when the floor gave way. It was very capable off road, apart from the terrible approach and departure angles and could be easily high centered.

    As you are probably working out - I'm slowly reviewing your past videos, I haven't seen that appeal to me - Ford Australia and Holden, both had badge engineered models with Nissan Australia. Partly because of need for a complete model range that couldn't be supplied by their own company or too expensive for import, depending on exchange rates and RHD. Also local " Button " plan requiring local content and model sharing by reducing models locally made, to improve efficiency.
    Ford gave Nissan the XF Falcon ute, badged as a Nissan Longreach and Nissan gave Ford their big Patrol badged by Ford as the Maverick.
    Before that, Ford only had the smaller Mazda BT-50 based Ford Courier ute and the three door imported Ford Bronco - which did look really good.

      I've driven those same roads many times too. Some interesting bends and the road is usually covered in mud/cow muck so its a pretty suitable vehicle for the area.

    Nisan Terrano JDM imports were super common in NZ when I was growing up. And they all seemed to smoke like nothing else! I think the design has aged quite well though!

    Sounds it wants the pumps micro filter doing ,
    They are pretty revy engines and rev free
    Got 4 d21s , had a 94 mistral , and one point a r3m and r3mr
    But they are strong , 200k is barely ran in lol
    One of the d21s we got been turbod on the stock none turbo engine 200+k. Now at 19/20psi boost front mount, big vein turbo and turbo pump , it shifts

    Another Ford badge engineering project that has actually lasted a long time is the Ranger pickup as the MK1 European and UK versions were based on a Mazda B series pickup trucks and in other parts of the globe they have a SUV version of the Ranger known as the Everest which seems to be a similar concept to this Maverick in design sense.

    This relationship between Ford and Nissan was very much alive in Australia where the Ford ute became a Nissan ute it was exactly the same but with Nissan badges on it and the trade off was the Ford big 4x4 was the Nissan large 4x4 l was surprised you didn't track one down when you visited Australia

    Is it men's health week? Jonny Smith had a very similar message about us men on this morning's Smith and Sniff podcast. A mate had one of these, his first off-roader, he took great pleasure in parking just off the tarmac in car parks.

    My mate had a ford maverick back when we was 17 in 2010 he passed less than a week and we rolled it on a green lane 😂 it took it well to be fair it lived on for a while after. U can do 100 down a hill but it won't stop wouldn't advise it 😂😂😂 though adding to your point on the useless turbo we pulled over after the 100mph run and you could still touch the turbo it was luke warm

    Ian next time you come to Australia you will have to try our Ford Maverick(which was a Nissan Patrol)

    As has already been said the Maverick in Australia was the Nissan Patrol, it came in lwb,swb and tabletop versions I don't recall if there was a utility version and they had a 4.2L petrol or diesel

    Really enjoyed seeing this. I remember them coming out and really liked them. I even had a brochure from the dealership, but never got any further than that to owning one. Much preferred them to the Discovery as Japanese cars were so much more reliable in those days. This is what makes your channel great, finding ordinary cars from recent history that transports people back to earlier times in their lives, time warp stuff.
