Recent penalties for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) violations include a $1 million settlement and a jail sentence for one physician.
If you think your medical records are safe, guess again. Back in May of this year, my doctor sent a medical authorization requesting my medical records from my old doctor from another state. Unknown to me, my doctor sent all my records to a 3rd party HIPAA certified company who while sending me an unexpected bill to pay for those records to be sent to my doctor ALSO sent me the medical records belonging to someone else.
I had a Hipaa violation on me at the local VA, they are giving me lip service and trying to sweep it under the carpet. I am trying to find a lawyer 2 weeks now but no one will help. Can I file a police report? What do I do now??
