    In 46 years, as a lifelong sci-fi fan, has there been anything sexier than the Constitution Class refit model? It's the perfect blending of real life form and function. Matt Jeffries really got that right in TOS, and it set the standard for the evolution of the Federation Starships in each iteration of Star Trek. A close second, for me, would be the Miranda Class (USS Reliant), which is of course based on the Constitution Class refit. If I ever win a lottery, one of these is going in the house!

    I know these are only prototypes, but the details on the Excelsior are all over the place. The blue lit nacelles were only on the Voyager CGI model. This physical model represents the appearance of the ship in Star Trek VI where it was the NCC-2000, but the markings are for the NX-2000, which varied quite a bit in appearance, including the bridge, impulse crystal, shuttle bay, and markings. For the price, the retail versions will hopefully be perfect and not a mishmash of reference photos.

      No shot, a 1.5m ship does not behave like a 1000m ship. Its so easy to tell especially when they do explosions, scale explosions very rarely look like they have the mass an actual object that size would have. Now that's not to say CGI isn't ever done badly, it is, but the 'sense of mass' as others have put it, is all down to the animation of a given ship, item, explosion, etc. You can like the practical models, I do too, but its just nostalgia for having grown up watching them. Hopefully, this is a prototype that can be changed before going into production. The hanger deck of the refit, here, is incorrect. As rendered, the hanger deck is the one from Star Trek V. Will the level of detail elsewhere on the model, this is definitely something that should be corrected.

    The navigation lights aren't even red and green, which one would expect from a "studio scale miniature". Sure, these are incredibly beautiful models, but for those prices I would expect a bit more attention to detail. But these are just prototypes, so I expect all errors will ultimately be corrected for the production models.

    Not to take anything away from these beautiful models but they really shouldn't be called "Studio Scale". Just because a model is bigger than normal doesn't make it Studio Scale. Studio scale implies that the model is of a size and level of detail that it could be filmed to create realistic looking images that would appear to be of a full size space ship. The actual Studio Scale models of the trek ships were usually 6 to 8 feet long. Yes, there can be studio scale models at this size or even smaller, the Star Wars X-Wing models were about 24 inches long for example. but those are much smaller space ships. But still, these are beautiful models and while expensive, not unreasonably so given the amount of work that has to go into producing them.

    • @Merennulli
      @Merennulli Год назад

      The Enterprise D they showed is halfway between the 2 foot and 4 foot studio models they used in the series. For that one, you are correct that there was no 3 foot model, but they did do smaller for at least that one because standard definition television hid many crimes. The other two were larger film models (aside from the AMT and other consumer kits that were used on screen, again because SD television let them get away with it).

    Are we still not going to say a word about the $15k price tag that's been floating around or that the refit is the Polar Lights model kit with less accurate aftermarket parts?

    • @amyhogarten5038
      @amyhogarten5038 Год назад +1

      I agree. Not to diminish the level of craftsmanship, but this is basically a tricked out Polar Lights kit. I don’t appreciate the vagueness of the discussion about this white elephant in the room. Why dance around the fact that this is a manufactured kit sold on the open market? And, with some skill and LOTS of time, someone could make one of these themselves if they truly wanted to. Perhaps it wouldn’t be as polished as this model turned out, but there is a certain pride of work and accomplishment that comes along with the tackling one of these babies and pulling off a decent build for yourself. But it does require a great deal of work to complete such a project properly.

    • @DrFeelGoodHelpDesk
      @DrFeelGoodHelpDesk Год назад +1

      @@amyhogarten5038 well put. The worst part is you can get the kit built to a better degree of accuracy and finish by a commission model maker for a fraction of the price (I've asked around and quotes between $800-$2500) and all the model makers asked pride themselves on accuracy to the screen used miniature.
      This FE model isn't even accurate to any single incarnationnof the shooting miniature. There are a large number of "conversion kits" available out there to allow you to reproduce the Refit in any of her incarnations and you would still be paying under £600 for a complete set up for an accurate build (I priced it up at just shy of £400 for an accurate Undiscovered Country build).
      $15k for what is basically a mass produced kit given the bare minimum attention to accuracy and detailing, with non-scaled lighting and a display case is close to outright theft.
      Of course there will be someone out there with more money than sense who will buy it, but then that's the M.O. of these sorta products, appeal to the uniformed to open their wallet.

    Incredible detail on the ships, i just would have loved to see them smoothing the printing and layering lines before painting. It's sad to see this amount of work being put into it while the basics of model making have been neglected. Still a great model.

      @odesseus Год назад +1

      YEah, I noticed layer lines on some of the pieces. They show some shuttles in the bay and the lines are very obvious. All I can imagine is these are still in progress prototypes, and they just needed to get them out of the door. For the amount you'll pay for the finished product (many thousands of dollars) I'm reasonably sure they will be perfection.
