Was inspired to make a much simpler unit by using the on/off light switch, it's wiring and cooling fan from an old food dehydrator ! House the transformer by fribicates a perforated outer steel shell from a cooling fan for better ventilation ! Using the battery post connectorsis a great idea for easy replacement of worn out brass tips ! A great educational video, thanks 😊
This is one if not the best video on how to make a welder I'm going to make a welder using alot of other people's videos but yours is one of the most helpfulPS. When I do make the welder im going to name it THE AMALGAMATE! if you get that reference ten nerd points to you!!!
The cable that connects the arm with the pedal can be a bicycle brake steel cable, it is more flexible and more resistant, in addition you can adjust the distance with a screw.
Complimenti, ottima realizzazione.
Very clever mate - excellent project! The only comment I would make is that I believe it would be better to screw the microswitch to the frame rather than nail it because microswitches can be short lived, in my experience - however, just a very, very minor comment. Great work. Cheers
Like this welder and hope to make one, one comment I would like to make, I believe the circuit diagram shows the middle button as being for the hand switch and the bottom button being for the foot switch on your model its the other way round.
Cooling fans only work well if there's a big hole to allow the hot air to leave the box. The small hole you've left where the cables leave at the front of the case needs to be enlarged so that the fan can move a large volume of air over the transformer to cool it properly, otherwise it will overheat if you're doing a lot of spotting. Otherwise, a nice design.
I don't think I have ever seen a vacuum cleaner with a "volume control" - do you think could I just use a normal 120v dimmer switch, like for lights? Fantastic video, thanks!
Ok, quick question, with removable electrodes and foot control, could I use the electrode arms loose for more difficult welding such as inside and under a animal cage to repair damage cage wire?
nice work sir . one question : fan is pushing air into the transformer housing or pulling it out ? in any case where are the circulation ventilation holes for the air go thrught it?
Everything is beautiful, but there are 2 questions. Why is there light inside? And there are no holes for normal air circulation. How will the air flow cool?
still didn't answer the question as to the purpose of the light and the small slot where the cables come out does not appear to provide nowhere near enough air exit space therefore creating an increase in air pressure within the cabinet thus trapping heat OR if the fan is drawing air in through the cable slot then there is still not enough open space to allow enough cool air to enter and is also creating a slight vacuum that will pull in more dust than if the both entrance and exit source of air were balanced. However, this is probably only for the occasional use which wouldn't matter much for circulating air. Why is the fan on a switch. It should come on at the moment the transformer is powered up. It is easier to keep it cool from the start rather than try to cool it down after it has gotten hot. Very ingenious. I like it.
Hello. Very nice job. Could you please tell me what the copper "contact tips" are? Are they used for the TIG welding torch? They look similar but I think they are not. Thanks in advance.
I'm guessing you are in Europe or another country where the standard is 220VAC, what value would I use to replace the control unit you cannibalized from the vacuum? I live in the USA and our voltage standard is 115VAC. Great job with this project and very good visuals, keep it up.
You take the controller from an 1800W vac, which is designed to control a universal motor, and use that to control a transformer which is going to need around 3KW? I'm amazed it works.
Good looking build, but I'm a bit concerned about the use of metal screws about the 14:25 mark. Those nuts are extremely close to the tracks on the PCB. Not sure if those tracks are low voltage or mains, but if the bolts rotate over time or when tightened, they could touch the tracks making them live. As the screws lead directly to the outside of the box and are exposed, touching them could be dangerous. Using nylon spacers and screws would be much safer.
great job the light also give you a hint it's on "screwfix " earth rod would also work for tips comes in 4ft lengths code 28044. did you cut out the ground in the main feed wire?

Price of the Spot welding machine . I'm interested in buying instead of assembling by myself . Need lot of time to run back n forth in search of the Transformer & attachments .
Hi, I find your video very interesting. Where did you find the battery terminals? I tried to search 3B@Y and various auto parts sellers but did not find appropriate electrode holders like yours, with such a large contact surface.
I built one using a car battery but the only battery I have is like 600CC Amps. LOL it blows holes in the batteries I'm trying to us them on. E-Bike Battery 18650 type. I built one like yours using a MOT but need to tame it down. BanGGood sells all sorts of Timers but nothing that can regulate On time. Guess I'll have to build a 555 or transistor timer of sorts. I can regulate the Current some what using like 8 AWG wire but even that is too much. will try 12 AWG . Doing that it really wouldn't be of much use for anything else. Really don't need much. I have a 15 Amp Veriac that may work but really don't want to toast it trying. Anyone out there have Idea's ? These MOT transformers are a Hoot. Made a Kick Butt Battery charger with one. You really don't need to cut the Coil Core. Just hack saw threw the Secondary and punch it out with a Bolt. You can twist up just about any transformer you would ever need with the dang things. Ell you can even make a 12 - 24 volt to 120 volt Inverter with them.
If you need a high amp relay (60A), I sell a latching one that is controlled by 5V. You just need a circuit to turn it on and off. www.ebay.com/itm/132440059832
I made it my friend. I tried with 16sq mm 2 turn but it didn't work.. the weld was not good so I made it 4 turns i.e around 3.8V. Now it's perfect. The weld is awesome... better than Chinese cheap spot welders.. I'm using it for building battery pack for solar, ebike and other applications... :)

Cause their the one the easiest to find, you could use a small one from a radio, or stereo amplifier they have one 120/240vac to 12vac then they use rectifier to turn it to dc. I wanted to use a light dimmer connected to the live wire, so i could adjust input voltage to the transformer and regulate the output voltage 3 turn give about 5 volt.

It'll work because its momentary current, not a continuous run. The ratings are always average over time, unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
