      The issue for them is probably that they do not have the technology (their manufacturing plants ready for how film cameras were built or suppliers any more and haven't had for years. Leica never stopped making film cameras and so for them restarting production for M6 is much much much less of a hassle (especially with Leica prices) than for any other manufacturer who stopped making film cameras years ago.
      But yeah, that would be nice, there's a market for them, there are many people who do not have thousands of euros to purchase new Leica, but there are for sure a lot of people who would love to buy new just made film camera that would simply work without any hassle, etc, just because there are people who always buy only new electronics/items.

      Believe it or not but Nikon and Canon still serviced their higher end film cameras such as the f4/5/6 & EOS 1N/V up until 2018 and 2020. They stopped because they were running out of parts to service them

    As always, an informative video. What I like most about Nico's videos is that he tells it like it is. If it's a stinker, he tells you so, he's not beholden to a Canon or Nikon or Hasselblad or Leica. Information is gold no matter what you are dealing with and Nico is my main source for photography and I pray he continues to give us his level of info.

    This one is conflicting piece for me. I had my first experience on an M3 while I was in college back in 2004 then that was about it. I moved back to film photography in Vietnam out of necessity because I wanted the Leica experience (got myself an M6 back in 2019 and a full suit of lenses for agreeable price). The thing about film photography in my country is that it is rather affordable due to super low labor cost and you get to have a full package of developing and scanning for about $5-7 from a competent and reputable lab. I really changed my shooting habit and up my game since 2019 but realistically if I have to move back to Canada later on in my life then film would have to take a back seat with limited time and cost of the hobby in North America. A digital Leica would make way more financial senses and practicality … but the joy and my personal experience with the M6 is irreplaceable.

    People pay 10x what I can afford for a pair of jeans but I'm not outraged by that. People are weird that they get offended by these things. These are luxury goods. If you can afford you can play. I can't afford a Ferrari but I'm not offended that they make Ferraris! I don't demand they make cheaper Ferraris!
    BTW: I ♥my classic M6. Works like new still. I bought it a while ago though. I don't think I'd pay today's prices. Glad they've done this as I can keep my classic going "forever".

    Leica didn't do it to save film photography or to make it "more accessible to up and coming photographers" as their youtube mouthpiece said (more accessible? With that price tag?). They did it because it makes sense commercially. Minimal expenses in R&D, marketing and production, great sales.

    Better have one camera that you shoot often than 4 or 5 that hardly see the day of light, so my vote is selling the cameras you don’t use and buy the new M6 (or MP). You could keep your M2 for non-metered experience with a 35/50, and get the M6 for your 28mm lens. And of course, if you do get it do share your thoughts with us :)

  • @weisserth
    @weisserth 2 года назад +6

    Nico, I am surprised to see that you also don't get it.
    This new "M6" is not a new camera. It's a Leica MP with M6 design language. It's 85% (probably more!) the parts and manufacturing of the MP. It has the same shutter, same shutter cloth, same film transport mechanism, same meter, same rangefinder, same viewfinder etc.; it will be manufactured using the same machines in the same location by the very same technicians already assembling the MP and MA.
    Leica slaps a newly designed top plate with a red dot and M6 engraving on a Leica MP and everyone loses their shit. This is a cosmetic variant to the MP and we should celebrate that you essentially can purchase a Leica MP at a $500 discount, because you're essentially getting the same camera.
    And you'll be getting the same thing all the way down the product supply chain, starting from the ordering process with the months to years long wait list - because Leica will produce homeopathic amounts of this camera at glacial speeds; to the repair and warranty process where this new M6 will be handled just like the existing MP in production.
    This is a Leica MP "M6" edition. Period.
    Hugh at Three Blind Men and an Elephant did an interview with Leica's head of marketing. Watch that. Leica in that interview says they're essentially different versions of the same camera.

    Although I shoot professionally -and I use Leicas- I wouldn’t have use for an M6, but I think it is great news for the brand and for the future of film photography. Hopefully this may induce somebody to start producing high quality scanners again, like the flextight… and who knows, we might start seeing new Mamiyas again.

    This is phenomenal news. I hope a 0.58X version is part of the lineup. I do find the appeal of the M2 as I also own one but the built-in meter of the M6 is a useful tool. I am glad that photography is not merely a money pit for me since my cameras pay for themselves back many times over.

    Leica needs to end the ban on spare parts for independent repair shops! The most important “new feature” of the M6 reissue is the new supply chain to make them. That should make it possible to increase production of film cameras and *spare parts,* which are crucial for keeping used, “affordable” entry-level cameras accessible, so let’s hope for the best! 🤞

    • @S4ran39
      @S4ran39 21 день назад

      As I understand it, the light meter parts for the new M6 cannot be used for the original "Classic" so instead of repairing your Classic or TTL M6, Leica are basically trying to sell you a new camera and if your original M6 meter dies you're out of luck - unless an independent repair shop can source the parts. If this is true, I think it's very short-sighted on Leica's part. The entire brand is based on a few core tenets such as legacy/history, IQ, dependability AND the assumption by many that they're potentially buying a camera for life. Allowing relatively basic components for film bodies to become obsolete doesn't make much sense given the legion of M shooters prepared to pay through the nose for Leica to service and repair their beloved cameras. Take that away and Leica loses one of the main planks upon which it's built its reputation.

  • @Photinos

    Excellent video Nico, as usual your reflections are on point. In my humble opinion, the resurrection of the Leica M6 is a solid step for photography and therefore for the industry and for photographers who continue to use film. It is good news that I suppose will stimulate the production of the film. As for the price, which seemed to shock everyone, however, it is absolutely fair and even necessary, first for everything you mention, but also because if someone (in my case, I have 2 Leicas, one M6 TTL and another M7 and 3 lenses that I treasure) is really interested practicing analog photography and reaching a certain level will go out of his way to buy the Leica M6 and its wonderful lenses. Luckily there are many cheaper cameras and lenses that are just as useful. Finally, the images are not made by the cameras, it is the talent of those who use them.

  • @philipu150
    @philipu150 2 года назад +1

    Thanks for your review, Nico. I part ways with your emphasis on cost and resale value. Leicas are built like tanks -- except beautifully in every respect. Their true value is their superb manufacturing quality, functional design, and durability. That is why, a decade ago when I had to sell camera equipment to purchase something else, I decided to sell my beloved Nikon FM2s and 5 Nikkor lenses rather than my M4 and its two Leica lenses, purchased used in 1972. Not because I liked the Nikons less or because one camera was more of a workhorse professionally for me in my pro years than the other. But the Leica is a treasure as well as a workhorse, an example of the enduring value and craftsmanship that is a joy to have and to use.
    Regarding the meter issue, I look back to decades when many of the best photojournalists used them only when needed--hand-held, because there were no built-ins then; they knew their light and they knew how to print difficult negatives. Look at their work! I know this doesn't apply to everyone, and hardly as much to color as to B&W, and I'm hardly arguing against meters, just noting that a built-in meter is not necessarily the beginning or end of all photography. Just a thought.

    One thing that hasn't been picked up yet is a well-needed change (if the specs are correct). The frame lines from the late M4-P onwards, including M6 (classic/TTL), MP, M-A, are accurate at .7m (vs the 1m frame lines of previous M cameras). For this new M6, the specs state that the frame lines are accurate at 2m (the same as the M10/M11). This is a better middle-ground distance for approximate framing.

      Because Leica RF cameras use clothe shutters. It’s a trade off between noise and vibration vs. speed.

    • @0mildoo
      @0mildoo 2 года назад +1

      Speed likely isn’t possible with a cloth shutter but a hybrid shutter is. That said there’s a reason why there’s only one camera that can do that. It took a lot of R&D and certainly wouldn’t be cheap to produce. It would also take a total redesign of the inside of the M6 to fit two shutter mechanisms. It’s probably doable, much like it was on the FM3A which is comparable in size to the M6, but there isn’t a ton of incentive for Leica to do it (these are selling out without even having feature parity with the M6 TTL) and if they did you could probably expect a pretty heady price jump.

    At first I was bit confused about this new camera. Then listened to few opinion and my thoughts on that. I agree that there cannot be a cheap leica, it would undercut their other film camera models. Next, when you buy leica, it's not about better image irrespective of lens you use, never understood the leica look, it's about brand, prestige etc. So, anybody who is buying leica is aware of the price. So, with leica m6, we have one more brand new leica. So, price is ok. Now, whether it will inspire other companies to bring new film camera, or whether this will bring down the prices of used leica m6, it's to be seen. My point is if you want to shoot film and shoot leica, go ahead. No point listening to few POV on price, leica trying to cash in m6 popularity etc. It's your choice. Regarding me, I can't afford a leica, even a used one. So, this launch doesn't make difference, but if this helps the community as Nico said, I am happy as I love shooting film irrespective of the price and cost that is there.

      Its funny because their film camera is 5K but their digital ones are almost 2x. The craftsmanship to make them is so high, parts, mechanical parts, etc... plus this is price with VAT, if you remove VAT and store profit the camera leaves the factory at around 3K, made in Germany...

    The new M6 is a restyled MP. Meter is different than the one in the original one. So no good news on this end. I just had my M6 repaired and the tech told me that Leica doesn't suport M6 anymore, no new light meter boards. I just had rewind crank replaced + a little cła, but the future doesn't looks bright. On top this tech told that Leica just scraped huge amount of parts for older models, no reason for me not to believe as this guy was trained in Wetzlar and knows people there.

      @@cansagarri6749 as far as I know it's not possible. The same was for TTL, not suitable for classic. You know, if you care about your users then you support- like Mercedes does, you can buy any part for classic cars because they care abot their heritage. Leica not so much and I'm sure a lot of current M6 users were wishing for them to put out the old M6 design and bring back the parts supply.

    I don’t like the new M6, it’s just a MP in a new dress. We all are waiting for a cheaper version of the film Leica. The new M6 is not a new construction, Leica didn’t spent any money to engineering a new camera. This camera just a brilliant step to make money with the M-hipsters, not my way.
    I own a MP and a M2, and I will keep them, not upgrade anymore.
    By the way, I love you videos. Best wishes from Germany

      That M6.2 would be on my wishlist

    Nico, I agree, the classic M6 will never go down. If people think that the M6 classic will hold its value and may even increase. There is no substitute for a Leica M series. Some buy the Leica Barnack models and in my opinion they are not in the same league as a “M” model. It is my understanding that Leica no longer supports or stocks parts for Leica Barnacks. I would not recommend them as a first Leica, I don’t think they are practical for shooting, more of a shelf queen, very hard to load film and has two viewfinders. If someone wants to get a Leica at least start with a Leica M2 or M3.

    • @paulgough4302
      @paulgough4302 Год назад +1

      The M is a little quicker if you know how to use it but Barnacks produce exactly the same quality negative, the lenses make a difference. Loading the film and using two eyepieces is no big deal, I believe you over emphasize the difference, my iiig has performed well over its life, still working better than me, I'm only a few years its senior, and has a dioptre adjustment for old eyes, M's dont.

    Great that Leica is doing this. I appreciate this as a beautifully made object. But for taken actual photos I prefer 35mm and 6x7 SLRs that are way cheaper and more practical. The price range for the cameras isn't that bad if you look at the lenses. More in the category of designer handbags that broadcast your disposable income bracket.

    I think Pentax making a new film camera would be a good move by them. Pentax aren't really doing all that amazing in the digital market and people are always on the look out for an old film camera in good condition. A new film camera that is a good price would sell quite well. Canon and Nikon don't really have a need to make a film camera, as they both do so well in the digital space. Any new film camera is a plus. Ferrari don't make low budget cars, why would Leica make a low budget camera, it would hurt their brand for the highest quality of product.

    The M6 TTL has digital circuitry for the meter which will die within the next ten years on most cameras. The M6 TTL is the worst one to get because if the meter is broken it can not be repaired very soon. Most repair people already ran out of replacement parts.

    If ferrari brings out a retro model does it mean the other manufacturers will follow? These are just niche luxury cameras that were abandoned by most photographers in the film days, they did not stack up against spotmatics or an f. Good luck to leica in their bid to get some profit but won't do anything to expand the industry.

    My opinion is, it's way Leica usual overpriced, sad but true. Rumors had it, that since 2020/21 Leica would release a new Leica film camera for around 2500 EUR, but this price is rediculous. Leica basically had the need for any much new R&D, since the M6 had been out of production for 18 (!) years. The OVF is being better, and the top plate is now brass, and 3 LEDs instead of 2 inside the Viewfinder...but seriously, that price is a mess...and nothing like "Leica for ordinary people".
