Carl Akeley's Striped Hyenas
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- In 1896, taxidermist Carl Akeley ventured to Somalia on a research expedition with Field Museum scientists, and procured a quartet of striped hyenas (among many other things). For more than six decades, these taxidermied mounts sat in an unfinished diorama case - and we wanted to do something about it! Fast forward to last year, when we launched our Indiegogo campaign, "Project Hyena Diorama." Today, thanks to more than 1,500 donors, 50+ staff, viewers of The Brain Scoop, and many many more supporters who shared and promoted Project Hyena Diorama, the Field Museum is celebrating the opening of its first full-scale habitat diorama in more than six decades.
We COULD NOT have done this without your help! This was such a huge undertaking, and it was all made possible by passionate learners and curious folks from all over the world. Thank you!
Thanks to Dr. Larry Heaney for taking the time for this interview!

WE DID IT!!! :D Thanks to everyone who helped make 'Project Hyena Diorama' a reality -- Carl Akeley would be proud. He'd snarl at us fondly, in his sometimes snarly way.
+thebrainscoop Well done Emily and all involved
+thebrainscoop I saw you on TV news discussing dioramas.
+thebrainscoop How much money did you make to help build the diorama?
+thebrainscoop What will happen with the museum space the hyena's used to occupy? Another new diorama?
+badgerman A bit more than $155k, which was 91% of our initial goal - but enough to ensure the diorama's completion. Had we achieved 100% the additional funds would have gone to things like more specialized lighting.
I just can't get over Emily's great personality. Obviously I don't know her personally, but she seems so smart and confident. I want a job like this guy's job.
+TopHatKitty "I just can't get over Emily's great personality"
I'm over it myself, frankly. 130 episodes later. Oh shit. Who am I kidding? It's still good.
Hahaha
wow, the final result is pretty damn impressive, i like how you can't instantly spot the line between the ground and the wall so it looks immersive, good job ;)
I was there!!!! I was in front of this!!! Just last weekend!!! Im from Korea and I never thought I would get to see the field museum!! But I did!!!! Its a shame I didnt get to see Emily since I went on a saturday.. Anyway I loved seeing the museum :)
You shouldn't be thanking us!
Your videos have done nothing but further my love for biology in all forms, the content you put on this channel is an easy, down to earth way of educating people of all ages. The Wolf videos by far are my favorites.
Thank you Emily and everyone at the field museum (and your old one) for being able to give us an inside look. it's definitely a dream for this Australian to come and see some of the collection, or all of it!! I've got the time.
I CAN wait for the next episode.... for now.
Emily says: "Larry what is your title here?" And here's what I read in my sleepy state "Creator of Mammals". So even though he says what his title is a second later, I watched the entire video thinking of the scenario of Emily interviewing The Creator of Mammals. I bet Emily would have tons of questions for someone like that :P
It was absolutely breathtaking to stand in front of the diorama and try to take it all in. There's so much detail in everything.
Aww yisss. I feel so proud for everyone who made this possible, not least Emily, The Brain Scoop squad and the Field Museum.
I had the opportunity to visit the old diorama a month before the transfer. Cant wait to go again and see the results! Cheers from Mexico!
Oh wow, the mural in the background is completely seamless with the foreground....absolutely beautiful! You have some talent people at the museum.
The enthusiasm displayed concerning this diarama is absolutely beautiful and encouraging
Was glad to be able to lend a little support for this. (got the poster hanging in my room.) Hyenas are such an important species and often overlooked. Now the Chicago area can see these amazing animals in a great place like the Field Museum.
So when I come visit the Field Museum someday to spend *several* long minutes in front of each diorama, how many days should I dedicate to wandering around the place?
Yaaaaaaassss!
this diorama is BEAUTIFUL! It's SO perfect and a great addition to the museum.
It's so beautiful! Glad to have been a part of this history.
I never relized how much thought and work goes into creating a diorama. Thank you so much for sharing the process with us, Emily!
Emily, you are such an inspiration. If I weren't old & broke down in body I'd follow in your footsteps. Thank you for Brain Scoop, makes me happy.
The Diorama is incredible. Well done to everyone who helped make it.
Beautiful diorama! I wish I can go there to see it myself
I can't wait to make a trip to Chicago to see it! I'm so glad I could be one of many contributors to see the diorama become reality.
All the people I've seen so far from the museum are so passionate about what they do! It's amazing and lovely and gaaaaaaah thanks so much for making this a thing on youtube. I enjoy it immensely.
I've always loved the dioramas in the Field Museum. Especially the description plates with colonies that haven't existed since the 1930's. :)
That is some beautifully preserved taxidermy!
Hey Emily!!! Tiago here. Was great to find you tonight at the California Academy of Science!
Thank you so much for stopping for me! Made my day!! Subscribed! Best wishes!!!
I just want to say, the hyena diorama is stunning❣ I truly love the whole thing. 💞
Yes!!!! I feel this is a very special episode on The Brain Scoop.
They're like time capsules. The sheer detail paid to each of the dioramas is breathtaking.
I waited right until the end ... I have to hear the end!
"...it still has brains on it." Always have to wait to hear that, too.
+CrankyPants
I giggle everytime
Congrats, it looks amazing! I can't wait to make a trip and see it in person!
I think I see a raccoon tail there. He wouldn't last long in the desert.
+culwin we filmed our interview with Aaron before this, so Soon was in the diorama already, but the instant Larry walked up and saw him there he said "to find that raccoon in Somalia would be a considerable range extension for a North American mammal" and I died laughing.
+thebrainscoop to find humans in the Americas is considerable range extension of an African mammal
+rurutu M Well played.
+thebrainscoop if you died, have you then come back as a ghost, zombie or when of the many other undeath and living death types?
That's very true.
I love how deeply thought out and considered every element of the dioramas are. It's something that often is overlooked by much of the general public. I really hope there will be a trend in interest towards dioramas and taxidermy again soon
Could you guys do more in depth interviews about the other dioramas? I would love to appreciate the astounding amount of effort which goes into each one the next time I visit.
Congrats on making the diorama happen!
And Emily's evolution as a youtuber/public speaker is very noticable in that end speech! On her first videos she was stumbling on words and now it all just flows smoothly.. Very impressive!
I'm glad to see they kept the big face in the mural rocks.
Nice diorama.
Thought the doc was going to play leapfrog with you, standing like that. Thought he was going to fall over. LOL.
+Elaine Marie That's his power stance.
Rabid Rabbit Rabbi True! I've observed law enforcement and military personnel do the same thing. His was a rather over exaggerated version. But looked hilarious, TBH. People are fun to watch.
I teared up a little bit watching the end. It's beautiful!
That's is such a gorgeous diorama.
Great work Emily, you rock. I'm curious though, there is a substantial area of sand below the surface at the front of the glass that can be seen. Has there been any thought of placing items below the sand at the front of the glass so that they can be seen? This would give a sense of what may lie below the surface and give another level of depth to the diorama and add another teaching point for the museum to share with its viewers.
Congratulations to Emily and the museum on such a beautiful diorama!
so i have just recently subbed to your channel and i have to say i absolutely love it! i have binged watched nearly all of your episodes and now every time a new one comes on, i get pumped and sing with the intro. i even got my boyfriend into it! great job i hope you keep it and i hope you have a great day!
Great project. Would die to go to the museum and see it myself once.
well now that its done I have to go back to chicago and finish visiting the rest of the museum!
Looks great! Definitely going to check it out next time I'm in the area.
That's a beautiful diorama!
Whitebeard has convinced me to make a road trip to Chicago's field museum.
4:37 - And here we see the coy U.N TANK in it's natural habitat doing absolutely nothing
I love that we have scientists spent a large amount of time and brain power to make sure everything is factually correct.
In regard of what Carl said about seeing stuff on the screen, I think that 3D VR is gonna change that completely. We can now Get a more true picture of an animal's behaviour without having to disturb their environment that much. Did you check the 3D 360 videos in the Discovery channel's youtue channel? Awesome Stuff.
Great video btw! :)
Yay! It looks awesome! Congratulations on a job well done. 😄
IT LOOKS SO COOL!
Congratulations to everyone involved at the Field! :D
Good stuff. Keep up the great work
Last time I went to a museum the dioramas were my favorite :) first time I'd ever seen something like that
cant wait to see it, going in February
Yay i'm so excited it's done. I wish i lived close so i could go see it in person, it looks wonderful. Good job guys and good job Emily! :D (you too Soon Raccoon)
Looks beautiful! Proud to play my little role in making this a reality 😊
Emily and her army of scoopers have done well!
Emily you're absolutely amazing! I hope to be more like you in the future. Keep up the great role modeling :)
I can't think of a better role model to have.
Congrats Emily!
Oh Soon Raccoon trying to sneak in! LOL
Looks great!
I really wish this channel was bigger...
OH MY GOD ITS BEAUTIFUL
the diagram is beautiful
I am sorry if you explained this in another video, but why are they in the hall of Asian mammals if these specimens were collected in Somalia?
+KawaiiCari That's where the hidden empty diorama space was, so they were working with what they had. Also, the hyenas used to be in the Hall of Reptiles, so this space is still more fitting than their old home.
Ah thank you!
Yes to the above ^^^ but additionally, striped hyena distribution used to stretch all the way to India - so finding these animals in parts of Asia would definitely not be unheard of.
That makes sense. Definitely more fitting than the hall of reptiles!
+thebrainscoop Wait, are there still hyenas in Asia today?
It's amazing! Yay!
Been subscribed since the first few videos and only just realised that The Brain Scoop is a pun on it being a journalistic scoop about brains (etc). I feel stupid now :P
I love it I'm fan of striped hyenas
We love it
Nice work
Wow, it's Jan 28, 2016, 2:30pm and you have 583 likes and 0 dislikes. Congrats!
does the Field have any Tasmanian Tigers in it's collection? Love to see them.
Yea! Congratulations
Beautiful!!!
Going with the gf to the field museum on valentines day, cant wait to see this exhibit
Hey Emily! I really like your secretary desk 😊
wow!
Yay!
Teddy had invited Carl to go big game hunting in Africa
YAAAAS!!!
It still has hyenas on it.
Dis guy seems so nice :)
There's the Somalian desert, then there's the Somalian winter landscape. It's called Sweden. As a citizen I can attest to this.
Is there a definitive explanation for what makes the dung beetle of story interest-even the archaic gods of Egypt were known to refer to such-or maybe descendants of their trained human scribes padded documents to "make it so"...
omg 0 dislikes. Nobody move... (try not to breath)
Your monthly reminder, gentle viewer. Go through the Brain Scoop's library, find a favorite video or two and share them.
500,000 subscribers before 2016 ends! :)
Isn't it strange that guys who film themselves playing video games or playing pranks on each other and women who film themselves putting on makeup or singing in their sports bras get millions of views and a channel like this that has wholesome, educational content only has just over 300,000 subscribers? This is where I would want my kids to find a role model.
Is this the same hyenas
damn his looks real
I can just faintly hear that ambient wind noise! :p woooosh...
probably unknown facts Carl Akeley went out on a big game hunt with Teddy Roosevelt.
I love hyenas espsically striped hyenas I think they are cool animals.
So if we know now that two adult females together is unrealistic, why were both included? I'm sure there's a good reason: As you both said, every decision here was deliberate, and designed to paint as accurate a picture as possible of the animals and their habitat. So why the decision to represent a likely-inaccurate pack formation?
+12tone As Larry mentions in the video, there's still a chance the two females are related, so the grouping isn't necessarily inaccurate. The other consideration is that Carl Akeley intended for these animals to posed together in this grouping, and we wanted to maintain their original configuration for that reason.
That makes perfect sense, and is pretty much what I would've guessed, but I figured I might as well ask. Thanks for answering!
Is it possible to still get dna from the hyenas?
Question: if these specimens were collected from Somalia, why are they in the hall of Asian Mammals?
Very different from speed hyena, the females tend to stick together with maybe a make our two which would be considered "Omega's."
AWWWWW YISSSSSSSS IT'S DONE!
If you change the "d" in the title to an "r" it becomes a whole other sort of display ;o
+pipuk3: What do Striper Hyenas do? Go around painting stripes across the desert?
+Joseph Davies ALL the stripes.
Wow no dislikes
I've heard (from zookeepers I've worked with) that Hyena's are nearly impossible to sex. How were these genders determined?
They watched to see which ones were looking in a mirror to see if those stripes made their butts look fat? (No need to hate...I'm a female, too, just making a joke.)
Hey, that's my Dad, cool
Are you joking? Because I actually say that all the time when I see cool old guys in the scientific field (i.e. Sees bill nye on the tv or In a magazine: "HEY THATS MY DAD")
Nope, that's actually my dad
+Ben H oh...that's cool. I'm very tempted to say "pics or it didn't happen" but I guess you have no reason to lie. Also he stands like the jolly green giant and that's cool.
+Ben H Are you going to follow in his vocational footsteps?
I wana draawww it!!!
I see a Soon Raccoon! ;)
