      What do you think Momota would have improved though? He didn't have an obvious weakness to improve like Axelsen's stamina and leg strength was previously.

    • @TheDcac

      @@ductrung3993 That was the match which crushed Momota and sent him spiralling to retirement lol. The nerves Axelsen had due to his knowledge of the h2h previously still weren't enough to stop him winning. The fact that it went the distance and Axelsen still won with his massively improved stamina just showed Momota that the advantage he had previously was gone now and he wasn't going to be top dog anymore even if he got back to his best. It crushed Momota's spirit.

    The only reason why Viktor is looking so good now is cause no one hits good shots and move well like 2018-2019 Kento. Basically they aren’t good enough to trouble Viktor. Kento and Viktor were the top 2 back then and were far above the rest. But Kento was always better than Viktor. Naturally when no.1 is out, the no.2 takes the crown.

      Yeah but u also didn't take into account the improvement Viktor had. Viktor back then was darn slow. He was 20 pounds more overweight than what he was supposed to be. Post 2020 he lost a lot of weight and his movements improved tremendously. Prime Viktor would have been a far tougher challenge for Momota. I do however think Momota is still the best between those 2 but he wouldn't be able to slaughter Viktor had they both been in their prime.

    • @TekkaiJon
      @TekkaiJon 3 месяца назад +6

      @@secrets.295 you are right! He improved alot and became faster though not as fast as Kento and the other legends. But he could be fast enough to stay in the game, set himself up and attack rather than getting slaughtered all the time. Then if he won gold, he would be worthy of it. Maybe he would even stand a good chance against Kento. But it’s such a shame we will never know thanks to the car accident. It made his gold look cheap as compared to LD who had to defeat LCW.

    • @secrets.295
      @secrets.295 3 месяца назад +7

      @@TekkaiJon Ok that is just not fair to say. To win gold in the Olympics in any era is extremely tough. Just qualifying at the Olympics is already tough. To be in the top 100 rank is already extremely tough. Winning Olympics in any circumstances or time period is never cheap.
      I am a big fan of Viktor Axelsen and also I am from Malayaia and am a big fan of Lee Chong Wei. However objectively I have to say LCW is overrated. He lacks mental toughness and he never even won 1 world championship. He never even won gold at the Olympics and he even lost to someone like Cheng Long in the final after beating Lin Dan in the semis. He can perform brilliantly in the early rounds until he reaches the finals of a major tournament and he always flops where it matters the most. When it comes to the big stage LCW always fails to deliver. At least Viktor has beaten Chong Leng at the Olympics. Honestly I feel like if prime Viktor was at his peak during the LCW, Lin Dan era. I can see him winning World Championships and Olympics. If Lin Dan wasn't at his best he could beat him. I am not so sure about LCW.

    • @TekkaiJon
      @TekkaiJon 3 месяца назад +2

      @@secrets.295 you should rewatch Chen Long from 2014-2016. He was a beast and deserved to beat LCW. LCW was just unlucky. After Chen Long won the 2016 Olympics, he became a shell of his former self. Slow, sluggish, no urgency to dictate the pace and attack, he just followed his opponents till either he dies or his opponent kills him or themselves. He was just slow and pathetic against Viktor in the Olympics 2020. I know he said that he had blisters on his feet but whatever, his performance was just himself asking to get slaughtered.

    If Axelson can improve so could momota. These top players learn and build their game around each other. Like lin Dan, lee Chong wei, Federer, Nadal etc. And because momota’s form and game naturally counters Axelson he doesn’t need to improve as much physically or tactically to beat Axelson. Thats why you have an overwhelming 14-1 h2h pre accident. Momota in theory still had the advantage.

  • @florianm9693
    @florianm9693 3 месяца назад +46

    No, he looks better against 2022 Momota in the examples you have shown because that momota is leagues below his 2019 self. Momotas shots are more telegraphed which can see nicely when he predicts the cross lift. It it really apparent from the angle of Momotas racket relative the shuttle that he will play cross court, its not hard to see this at their level. Furthermore, Momotas shots were nowhere near as tight after his accident which gives Axelsen way less time to react especially when the shots are more easily predictable and attachable which plays into the strength of Axelsen.
    2019 Momota would consistently beat current Axelsen. I think Momota would have been the GOAT if he hadn't gotten into that accident.

    • @TheDcac
      @TheDcac 3 месяца назад +17

      Yeah, no. Pretending like Axelsen isn't leagues above what he was prior to covid due to his new physicality is just ignoring reality, just look at his body changes or how much more stable his movement is. Axelsen had an apparent weakness and fixed it. He would not have too much trouble with Momota regardless of the accident now.

    Also why he he turned op in Thailand Open in January 2021 without his usual baby fat cheeks, because he obviously have had proper training without any injuries holding him back.

    One thing that should be noted is Axelsen lost a lot of weight. For such a tall guy like him, he needs to be super skinny to have very flexible movement. Momota 2019 vs Axelsen 2022... I'm taking Axelsen 7 times out of 10. As impressive as Momota was with 11 titles in 2019. Axelsen broke the record for most consecutive wins with 37, but he couldn't possibly reach Momota's 11 titles because it was a Thomas cup year with an uneven scheduling in the aftermath of covid.
    Besides that, no one even uses Momota as a template on how to defeat/challenge Axelsen today, because he would eat those "neutral" shots when you don't have a great attacking drive with a powerful smash, which Momota didn't really have.

    • @vuphong3285
      @vuphong3285 3 месяца назад +3

      No one nowadays uses Momota as template to beat Axelsen simply because nobody can play as quality shots as Momota did. No current players can place slice/drop shots so close to the net like Momota.
      And saying Momota didn't have great smashes shows that you haven't rewatched his matches, especially ones against Viktor Axelsen. His smashes although not very powerful, had incredible steep and placement. The fact that Axelsen always moved so far to the back when Momota jumped tells how respectful Axelsen was to Momota's smashes.

    I think a lot of people are looking at the 14:3 (or even 14:1) score, giving Axelsen a 17.65% win rate against Momota's 82.35% and concluding that this is indicative of their relative strengths, but this would be a huge mistake, as these numbers are just a quirk of the winner-takes-all scoring in badminton.
    In reality, (assuming I counted correctly), Axelsen scored 1336 points against Momota, while Momota scored 1518 points against Axelsen.
    This means Axelsen scored 46.81% of the points and therefore "only" needs to win 3.19 percentage points more, to tie with Momota.
    I have no idea if Axelsen would win today, but 3.19pp is well within reason, so anyone claiming they know it to be impossible, is just delusional.
    Adding that he appears to have been specifically targeting and improving on his weak areas, that Momota was exploiting, seems to indicate that it would at least be an extremely close match-up.

    first of all, the 'life-changing' event for momota was not the car accident in malaysia. that was a bad accident that left him a bit shook up, but he was fine. the downfall was after that when he genuflected to the god of covid, not that there was a 'pandemic', but the way he acquiesceced to the mass psychosis of that whole thing. that is the exact moment when the magic left kento momota, never to return again. as far as the other stuff you say, it's true axelsen's core strength and other aspects of his physicality and play have improved, but you completely miss why momota was the dane-killer and it has nothing to do with axelsen's physicality or skills. momota beat axelsen, like he beat almost everyone, with mind. that was the magic, he got inside your head and it didnt matter anymore what your skills were. it's like he took everything you thought you had going for you and let you beat yourself. we've never seen anything like it in the sport before or since. there've been some legendary tacticians like lin dan and hidayat, but no one played the very top players from quite that altitude of cold zen ether that we saw momota rise to. point taken that victor has improved, but it's completely fanciful to say axelsen today could beat momota 2019. you dont know that, and neither does anyone else

    TBH it's not even about skills at this point. Momota head to head ratio got to Axelsen's head. It's a mental game. Just like how Lin Dan destroys Lee Chong Wei. LCW could destroy literally everyone else just like how Axelsen is ''destroying'' everyone else. Momota reads Axelsen well and plays a very particuliar fast pace tactical allies with as less lifts as possible that tires taller players. And Momota's net shots are god level, probably the best I've ever seen in his prime that is. For me it's very close to a tie. Axelsen is invincible when he's confident. Right now, nobody can beat him so his confidence is boosted to 110%. However, Momota always beated him, so it could get to his head. But a lot of what ifs.

      He won 11 titles 2 championships consecutively in his prime
      Skill wise also I feel he was superior he had no weakness, he fast fast, athletic, great stroke play, best precision, power smash, zero unforced errors, ability to handle pressure and what not

    I swear if the truth came to light that the danish federation or axelsen was behind momota's car crash(victor paid someonw to unalive kento)...
    Would bwf and olympic commitee strip him of his 2 gold medals?? And instead award momota an honorary gold?? 🧐

    Honestly i disagree with the title. Axelsen. Still took 3 games against a weaken momota in 2021 denmark open. Yes he won that one but still axelsen in the form of us life still struggling someone who is losing matches that in their prime would never lose. Thats saying alot about axelsen. He may be the best riht now but if we put todays axelsen to 2019 axelsen. He would still lose. He may have gotten better but his mental game is still not as strong as prime momota.thats for sure. Sure its gotten better but we still see him crack under pressure every now and then and you certainly cant have that with prime momota.
