    About 1954, as a teenager I was at Grasmere for a weekend visit. All one afternoon, Avro Lancasters were flying down the valley, low over the lakes, then coming round again for yet another pass. Unknown to us at the time, they were being filmed for "The Dambusters" movie - it was an unforgettable experience.

    I can imagine that sometimes a conversation in the RAF might go something like this:
    "Well, Flight Lieutenant, you have two duty choices: one is to transition to the F-35 Lightning, the most advanced aircraft in the RAF, and the other is to learn how to fly the Lanc.."
    "Lancaster!! Lancaster!! I'll fly the Lancaster!!"
    What a beautiful sight to see and hear-- Spitfire, Hurricane and two Lancasters.

    The significance of the Puma helicopter in the video is that it flew across the dam to show the the actual height that the wartime Lancasters flew across the Eder, Mohne and Sorpe dams on their bombing mission. They had to be exactly seventy feet above the water on their bombing run for the bouncing bombs to work properly.

    I've viewed a few of the other videos of this event and whoever decided a better view point was up on the hills instead of down by the dam was really thinking ahead! Nice side profiles of PA474 and FM213 instead of the typical black underbellies seen everywhere.

      Thank you for your comment. It was my 13 year old son who was shooting the footage from the hillside. Yes, totally agree that THE shot was on the hillside, but seeing that we had the use of two cameras, Jordan drew the short straw and made the climb :-).

    • @bfmcarparts
      @bfmcarparts 10 лет назад +8

      ***** Hello Richard,
      Here's what caught my attention of young Jordan's portion of this video. There is a nice balance (50/50) of the sky and the hill background. It really emphasizes the fact that these aircraft are barely above the horizon, and these hills change their acoustics. On the second pass he made use of what he saw from the first pass and made the subject well-centered in the frame and as soon as FM213's nose appears around the valley wall, Jordan adjusted his focus from just PA474 to include both aircraft centered. Then as the aircraft fly by, he changed his attention from the aircraft to the environment they are flying in by panning out to include more scenery. Very smooth camera work here Jordan!

      @@snapper8v yes I saw them all together at Waddington. I feel they missed a trick by not returning over Waddington once they had all formated. You had to go to the war memorial to see that, and the local police In their wisdom prevented anyone from leaving the car park we were in for what seemed like hours. Instead of allowing everyone out in one go and getting it over and done with, they dragged it out until it started to conflict with rush hour traffic. Totally unnecessary in my view,, and bad enough to take the shine off what was otherwise a very enjoyable and historic event. In fact that was one of the benefits of seeing the lancs at the dams iirc no police traffic control to spoil everything😊

    Incidentally one of the other lakes the Dambusters used for training was the Eye Brook reservoir near Uppingham, there's a plaque there commemorating the fact.

    The only thing cooler, would be to see three or four more with them. I know there are a couple more Lancasters being worked on in the hopes of being flyable one day. Maybe we'll get lucky.

    To think that Hundreds of these Bombers took off at once, 4 Merlins are enough for the shivers, I can't even begin to imagine a single mission for them.

      Andy R Thank you. It was just a perfect day. We'd been waiting for a good 8 hours by it was well worth it. The sight and sound of both aircraft was truly stunning. Then the Puma completing a low level pass just added to it 😊

    I get so see the Canadian Lancaster quite often as my home is right beneath it's flightpath when it does it's tourist flights over Niagara falls. It's a pity that the sound quality of this fantastic clip can't give a true representation of what one sounds like. 48 unsilenced cylinders are both deafening and beautiful.

    The only bad thing is they didnt drop the the same height for the drop as the dambusters did. The roar of the Merlins would have been so much greater.

      There is a static Lancaster (G - George) at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia 🇦🇺 since the end of the war. I've been there three times to see her. Our federal government and none of the so -called millionaires have made any offers help build any WWII aircraft. I've heard a whisper that Chris Hemsworth is supporting a Rebuild of a B - 24 Liberator in Avalon, Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺. They're rebuilding the B - 24 to be able fly. Which be the only WWII four engine aircraft flying in Australia.
