I always disliked that blanket statement architecture=design. Hate the professors that pushed it and pitied my friends that believed it. I did architecture in school because I like construction and wanted to build. In an academic setting I felt like the odd ball. Now that I got a job (not an architect) I'm much happier in the sense that yea the role I'm in fulfils the role I wanted to be in. I would still consider being an architect if I can find a role that matches or is better than the responsibilities and pay I currently have.
Sounds like you went to school for a pretty good reason. You can definitely find a role as an owner's rep maybe or within a design build firm. Because you know construction, you are ahead of most new to intermediate architects which gives you leverage. I would look into this path.
I've definitely found I love the real world of architecture because I do get to work on different things almost everyday. There's always something to keep my mind active, which helps the day go by. I do think school needs to reduce the number of required studios, so you can actually have a couple of semesters to fully focus on other important topics to learn.
If you are more interested in design than project management, documentation and building codes then maybe you should consider interior design. Twice the fun with much less stress.
