Hi Dami Lee. I am a Residential Designer in California. I use CBECC - Res 2019 for my Energy Compliance as required for permits. You can imagine how strict it is here to make my energy model pass. I started following you in hope to further my knowledge in Architecture, products, etc. as you post your videos. Thank you.

Dami, you're at it again with the amazing content. I'm currently learning from Kate Simminon at the University of Washington about the Carbon Leadership Forum and all their work with the EC3 tool. I'd say it's more on the analytics side of design but it's a great tool that allows designers to incorporate sustainable decision making from the very begining of the project. We've been getting into EPD's and understanding the carbon emissions of specific materials from Cradle-to-Gate or Cradle-to-Grave. Please give it a look when y'all get the chance.

I've only seen the mechanical and envelope consultant do the building engery modleing good to know Architects are also designing to these standards, great job!!
Pretty arrogant comment, if a mechanical and envelope consultant do energy modeling, who do you think is behind the design and design processes? Usually a Architect. Just look up the National Building code for your country and it'll tell you the scope of knowledge that architects actually know. Thats like saying "I've only seen nurses dress and stitch wounds, I never knew a doctor could do that pretty know doctors these days are dressing and stitching wounds to these standards" Just want to say your comment is very ignorant, arrogant and offensive all in one.
My God...this came at the right time...my projet for the semester is based around biomimicry for creating a sustainable homes for low income people...and i was struggling to get ways on how to do the energy analysis. THANK YOU!🤗
My semester project was about facades and I used grasshopper/ladybug, climate studio, and fenestra pro to do my energy modeling
I use grasshopper too, but still always find its funny to imagine how non-parametric users would read this sort of stuff; Grasshopper, kangaroo, ladybug... alright druids, cool... Hahahaha
This is a really interesting tool and another in a long line of software tools designers and architects should learn, thanks for sharing. I've used Honeybee and Ladybug for Rhino, but for academic purposes. The cost analysis feature is intriguing for real world practices. Looks like I have another thing that should keep me off RUclips, lol.
I'm an architect from algeria, I usually use climate 6 software for my projects while analyzing the energy. This software is very useful it gives me all the diagrams that I need to well designed my project. I recommend it for every architect.

Hey Dami at my architecture school we started using ladybug and climate studio which are grasshopper plug-ins that you can use to do these types of analysis, I’m glad to see that there are other and more accessible tools
Pls do you know of any plugins like this for 3ds max?

As a gardner my dream sustanability project would be a couple of house that grow quickgrowing plants on the roof and some walls and then make the buildings electricity and one of the buildings heat With a biochargenerator. Also bring back half cold storage spaces that dont run on electricity for things like vegtables

That software is pretty cool. Especially optimisation tool.
Looks like Canada and US is a bit behind UK and Europe regarding sustainability of buildings. I'm principal mech and sustainability energy assessor and we are using software's to inform Architects about most efficient build since Riba Stage 2, so we would impact the design almost from the kick off. Also we would analyse overheating of the building and specify any required local internal or external shading, G values, etc.
There are projects were sustainability drives architecture and the building and its not an just an afterthought which is a positive change in the process. I'm using software called IES VE.
I have a lot of ideas. we should start prefabricating houses and be done with loads of BS rules that slow the process. Housing is just a right and not an asset in contrary to what majority of society thinks.
Commercial buildings are a different story, haha :)
IES VE is brilliant, I only got to use it once back in 2012 when I worked for a firm in Dubai and it blew my mind. Cove tool is kinda of a startup, they need time to get there but a good thing is being free!
Also, modular houses should be way more common now. Honestly they will save tons of $ & emissions too, from manufacturing envelope materials to construction to waste...you name it. at least at small houses level this should be the main way to go

Damn, it's a pretty hot topic nowadays.,, There was once a period of Skyscrapers which required massive costs for maintenance. But now, problems seem multifold. Ever since COVID-19 wrecked havoc and is doing so, the market has squeezed. And also that this Climate Bandwagon has tightened its grip in the state of affairs, sustainable architecture has become more important... And it includes the budget as well..😊😊
I wouldn't say it's a "hot topic", we're just finally catching up and setting standards for what we should have been doing a long time ago 😊

I used cove tool in my last year of college as part of my first time trying to energy model and I really struggled with cove tool. i guess I'm not sure what the standard or expectations are with energy modeling tools but in my head i imagined i would have a lot more control over my model and individual values than cove tool would allow me to have. Things like window values like losses and gains, the spacers and installs, thermal bridges idk stuff like that I felt pretty limited. Also trying to place my building from Revit into Cove was not as easy as you made it seem tbh I don't know what I was doing wrong. again maybe this is how all energy modeling softwares are I've never seen any others
Hm yeah good point. You can put in individual values for each window / wall but I don't remember seeing thermal bridging. I guess you would have to build that into your wall's r value. I think there's a formula for manually calculating that into your wall's r value.
Cove looks to be somewhere in-between eQuest and Revit’s built-in tools. Coming from eQuest, this looks to have less control but it’s enormously more user-friendly. eQuest is pretty archaic in terms of user interface and there’s a significant learning curve. I believe it is something of an industry standard in some places. Compared to Revit’s built-in energy modeling, this seems to be more advanced in some ways but of course it’s easier to use a Revit model with Revit’s tools. Looking forward to trying another energy modeler!
@@Adolar I would say eQuest is more technical from Engineering aspect, I agree with the learning curve point as the Architect would need to learn more about Building MEP Systems to nevigate their way through eQuest. Also eQuest has ugly outdated graphics which is something Architects don't appreciate lol

What do you use for vector rendering,like V-ray / lumion , do you have have a video where you show your development prosses to finalize projects like for example ( note book sketches > sketchup> v-ray)
I just use Enscape now, it's so much simpler, the process is streamlined and you can see your model rendered in real time throughout your design process

Yeah we use honeybee inside of rhino for rather complex building shapes. It has the advantage to be also able to calculate very complicated architecture, but the downside, that it´s horrible complicated to get into theese very flexible scripts.
So we also decided to use for the very early stages of cityplaning the program " Spacemaker" that just has been bought from Autodesk.. yeessss i know... i dont like autodesk too..
But this programm is extraordinarily easy to use. It creates about 10 Categories of Analysises... Sun, daylight, trafic sound, solarpanel potenntial, Windsimulations and so on.. but realy focuses on the early stages of citydevelopement..
So for a single Building its not allready prepared.. But for everything else very great..
Yes its expensive. But i work in a 500 Architects company, so a view licenses are ok.
Oh my goodness, please keep up your amazing work. Im doing everything I can to live a sustainable lifestyle myself. Cant wait till these technologies are implemented at a large scale. Oh btw, we had a bioluminescent plant breakthrough! Research "Firefly Petunias". Im so curious as to how that technology can be implemented and incorporated as well!

would be cool if they added a bird friendliness tool to cove. It could show what glass surfaces like windows are at risk for birds and then they can be modified. Same for what areas reflect plants or have plants behind them etc
Tools like that should be subsidized to encourage its use.
@DamiLee I have often wondered how much Architects size building components and do calculations for those components. I know Structural engineers typically do that work but, it sometimes appears to me some Architects may do some of that work. Maybe you could clarify this based on your experiences. Thanks in advanced.
Typically mechanical engineers size the equipment (air handling units, boilers, chillers, pumps, etc).
What is your thoughts on Container homes?

Why do i feel like the block chain could help with this particular situation considering all this data.... Hmmm So a secure and stable layer on the network that would allow and provide licensed architects the information & data needed for their applications. It seems to obvious to me. :D
Have you played sims 4 on computer? Way more detail though. The best is the encompassing personality design.

I'm working on a project and have to use a tool for evaluating the performance of my design. There's Insight from Autodesk and there's cove.tool. Which one is better? Anyone have any experience with both platforms?

@@DamiLeeArch @DamiLee Aha it's very advanced and very very accurate studies, I recommend you to check "ladybug and honeybee and butterfly plug-ins in Grasshopper its amaaazzzing and very advanced and also professional for this... You can also check galapagos simulations and elk and the amazing one lunchbox ML plugin all this stuff and more for this purpose and very very professional for this and also so easy you can use preset scripts from the developers him self the grasshopper is open source as you know so.. I highly recommend so check this..

@@DamiLeeArch honestly I'm not familiar with this part (cost /cost benefits) I didn't used it before or need it.. But I'm sure there's many way to do this in Grasshopper there's tons of plug-ins on food for rhino to do this particularly and also do it for urban scale you couldn't imagine how much complicated studies you xan do with this literally tons of tons of professional studies... But to short cut and make you reassured i found the cove tool that you talked about in this video they maked a plugin for grasshopper and also scripts so you can extract and import all this studies to it and calculate all costs and Marge all this powerful plug-ins together.. They're know as well in cov tool how is grasshopper powerful in this field so they maked this scripts for it, 🍃✨
