The Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric is the electric version of the XC40, Volvo's small SUV. It faces a growing number of rivals, including the Volkswagen ID.4, Skoda Enyaq iV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Audi Q4 e-tron and the Tesla Model Y, when it finally arrives in the UK. The electric XC40 has lots of power and offers fast charging, while interior quality is excellent, but it's also expensive and not quite as practical as some rivals. Is it good enough to be your first electric SUV? Nicola Hume delivers the Carbuyer verdict.

Got one! Love it. Such a pleasure to drive. Smooth, powerful, comfortable, convenient. Thanks to Costco for their $3k discount, plus US Tax credit and Volvo even threw in a $500 charging credit! 230 mile range is plenty + easy to fast charge for road trips. You could save some money by waiting for a rear-wheel drive model, but the feeling of the all-wheel drive acceleration is spectacular. Chose this over other SUV EVs because of the smaller size - yet still plenty of room and easy to get in and out of. Very maneuverable and easy to park.
Great review - very informative and to the point.
Hope you enjoyed your post Euros break. Welcome back and obviously another quality episode. Reviewing Volvos definitely appears to be your.... Fortè.
I was thoroughly impressed by the XC40 - all the points discussed in the video: The acceleration (effortless to get 60mph in quick order), the interior, the Google integration. I see a few folks in comments wrapped up in the car colour. Check out the other colours. There's TWO shades of black which are quite sleek.
You could say that about most evs these days - it’s depressing that you can’t get a decent paint colour unless to spend 100k instead manufacturer’s seem to be determined to give us that watered down 4 colours option
Great review 👍🏻
what's the deal with the front "grille"? does it open or does it serve no purpose on this electric car?
Good review. Worth revisiting 👍🏾
Does anybody hear a strange sound when the Lighting is set to Low intensity? I was told this is a common ‘feature’ because of resistor
Just like manufacturers mpg figures, ev range should be found under the 'fiction' section.
But like mpg figures, it gives a solid benchmark to compare one model with another. We always aim to offer a real-world driving range in our reviews.
@@carbuyer it's disappointing that Volvo offer only the most rudimentary range calculator on their website. Peugeot's and Skoda's are much better. I can help but wonder why?
@@Beorn. You can just ask google in the car with your voice to get the range.
@@carbuyer Don't know about that, the xc40 has almost the same real world range as the ioniq 5 despite the ioniq having a claimed range of over 100km more.
@@Speed_7545 That is interesting and good to know. I wonder how the Volvo compares to the Mercedes eqa? A direct comparison would be of great help. At the end of the day for me what's important to know is t the theoretical range but will I get there when it's dark and snowing and I've a long journey ahead with a mix of motorway and mountains as I often do. For me personally I don't want a car encumbered with massive batteries that take an age to charge and have to be slung down low. I'm considering the eqa for that reason, it looks likely to do what I need.
Army surplus green?
When every cheap POS EV costs rrp 30k, this is quite reasonable for a rocket ship !!
Just ordered xc40 recharge fwd ,cant wait..... to bad I'm been made to wait till the end of March due to this cp chip shortage!
A brand new one of these is about 2/3rds of the price of the cheapest 2nd hand electric car that is rated (aka legal/insurable) to tow my 1180kg (2600lb) boat trailer. While yes, 400hp is more than enough, and 200hp would be fine, if you're going to take out a motor, please keep the 4WD/AWD as that is handy at a slippery boat ramp.
Yessss she's back 😏
Great review as usual
Thank you!
What's the color?
Best thing Is that it has a real os. When you give it a command or ask a question it actually works and much much faster!
When are we gonna see something like Volvo Recharge Concept ?
The next-generation XC90 is due next year... think you might see flashes of the concept in that.
You look great😁👍
Looks like they left it in factory undercoat in that colour and just painted the roof
Looks are subjective, but we rather like it!
Yup, drab grey is the new “in vogue” colour for cars, UPVC windows and anything that can be painted.
My Volvo C40 has a steering wheel vibration very bad when you drive 65 mph, Felt UNSAFE to drive, especially at high speeds.
Why is there a mid-seat tunnel? Free floor should be flat!
Why don’t Volvo release a single motor long-range version like the Polestar - which has the same power train & battery? Cheaper and better range!
It is planned to do so soon
Waiting 40mins to charge your car isn’t “really quick”. The futures going sideways if not backwards. Damn!!
Where I live there are several free charging stations located in parking areas where we frequently shop. The car can be fully charged whenever we go for a trip to the grocery store. Not to mention, one can simply plug in at home and charge overnight.
@@bryang4856 time is really precious.
@@LDN-KDR2007 And you’ll have plenty more of it if you can charge while grocery shopping and not have to make stops at the gas station any more.

The Mercedes S-Class is on our list!
comfort and good performance, but too expensive ?
Best wait until the cheaper single-motor models arrive...
Lately I only see cars I can't afford. Aren't there any other cars anymore?
It's true cars appear more expensive to buy, but it's worth taking into account things like inflation, as well as all the added kit and safety tech modern cars get. Plus, many new-car buyers pay for their cars in a single monthly payment, reducing the perceived purchase costs...
Can you get an electric car without the green plates? I don’t want to stand out. 😬
yeah, you can buy plates for £15
I think it's an option when you buy the car anyway
Nope. It’s a gov based initiative to distinguish ev from ice cars. There is no option.
Of course! The green plates are optional.
www.a1showplates.com/
Buy what you want, and yes, they do fully legal plates before anyone says!
Is the intro British comedy? Cause the title already said it is an electric variant
Volvos are the most reliable cars... Are they the same with EVs? Pls answer Nicola : )
If anything, electric cars should be more reliable - fewer moving parts means less to go wrong...
@@carbuyer but how long will the batteries last? And the replacement cost?
@@carbuyer True!!! 🙌
@@cloudstrife206 7 year guarantee on the batteries
Best and most reliable and affordable EV in the business. The only one I'd buy. Eff Tesla.
For €60k you can get Tesla Model Y, which is far better than this car.
Could you please work out the carbon footprint of the total manufacturing of this car versus a petrol model? I did read that it would take 4.5 years for this vehicle to become carbon neutral…by then the batteries would need replacing.
Almost every electric vehicle comes with an eight-year battery warranty, suggesting fears of battery life are unfounded. We've certainly not heard any real-world stories of long-term EV drivers suffering dramatically reduced range over time.
@@carbuyer I asked about the carbon footprint to build an electric car over a petrol car! Since Uk government states its better for the environment.
@@ericfriend5550 Basically its the effort to reduce pollution in City's(Towns). As you probably know a lot of people die or suffer in biger Citys because of pollution coming from vehicle's and most importantly kids suffer a lot(from lungs illnesses). Government need to reduce pollution in urban areas as soon as possible and that way save lifes.
@@ericfriend5550 Volvo released some information / stats re this recently which is publicly available

Car reviews these days sound more like ads and less like reviews. This add is so drooly and fangirly, I’ld bet it was promoted. Where are the reviews that put most customer interest at the top: Durability or longevity, low maintenance and price.
Not promoted, we promise! We aim to cover all the main points: interior, exterior, driving, practicality, running costs etc in our video reviews, with further detail in our written content on the website. Just search for what you need on carbuyer.co.uk. Hope that helps!
Why don't u just get off the Internet then? If u can't handle a simple, honest review. What's with the unessasary hate?
