- Now onto our second shed visit, the now closed Thornaby Motive Power Depot.
This was one of the last built built steam sheds where we see a few locomotives of the Q6 class,One, 2238 (LNER 1946 number 3395; BR 63395) has survived to preservation on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. It is owned by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) and re-entered service after a major overhaul in 2007.
Footage owned by their respective owners.
My Dad worked here for 25 years, He was a steam/diesel fitter. Fred Taylor
I hadn't realised the commentary was modern until he mentioned that Thornaby roundhouse was demolished in the 1990s!
My Dad was there all his working life, he was a driver Ken Turner
In 1962 Thornaby had a fleet of 183 steam engines on the books + a couple of dozen diesels (in service) - and a couple of dozen additional diesels (ordered but not yet delivered).
this depot lasted till 2011, ill miss this depot, ive grown up with it since 1996 :(
Amazing piece of history.. Really chuffed you downloaded this video. Cheers :)
I worked there in62 to 65 as a passed cleaner got very good at using bullring turn table could stop it spot on every time
What about showing cutting up the locos for scrap, and smashing up the buildings etc? This was not interesting at all!
SteamLocoScrapper yes it was
At 0:38. I wonder if the driver got bullocked for that massive wheel slip.
More lovely history bulldozed !
Take a look at the Norfolk and western's service arrangements for the modern coal burning J6 locomotives. That's modern.!!!
Think the roundhouse had gone before the 90's IIRC
