- Snowboarding | Alpe d'Huez | 360 Audio | Listen with Headphones!
I've been working on incorporating true binaural audio into my snowboarding videos. Combating high wind speeds whilst riding has made this very difficult, but after a few prototypes I've come up with something that I think works well. Listen with headphones to get the full experience.
This is the first installment of my Mindsurf Monday series, I know its not a Monday, but I was too keen to get a video out! Resorts here are still shut so I had to walk up, guess how long it took me in the comments down below. Closest answer wins a prize!
If you would like to have snowboard lessons with me here in Alpe d'Huez, France, then take a look at my website below to find out more:

How long did it take me to hike up here? (I took some breaks, and the total distance was 3.3 miles)
Winner announced soon: Update - still no correct answer!
2 hours and 20 minutes
I think it took 120 minutes to reach the top!
2 hours 3 minutes
Uhhhh, 1h57?
3:14:15
Thank GOD!!! No annoying music on the back....just the real natural sound ❤️❤️❤️
when you do it in real powder its much nicer...
U got No Plan .... Black Sabbath paranoid, creedence..., deep purple Highway Star would be great to this
It’s so relaxing and calming watching these videos and seeing how he snowboards is so nice when your beginning to learn to snowboard
This is pure satisfaction! An entire ski area, freshly groomed, all for yourself. No bugging people on the runs, you can just enjoy going straight down 😌
Alpe d'huez and Val Thorens are still on my bucket list
wow that must have been a satisfying long run, fresh and no crowds, amazing!
Yeah was epic! 🤙
That audio was awesome, I'd love to hear what it sounds like in some deep powder
Yeah, hopefully will get some of that soon!
Bro there is like zero deep powder hahaha
@@jensvandenhoek1426 So I've been told. Is this a normal year for you guys or do you usually get better snow?
@@myusernameblows sometimes yes sometimes no
I love it man! Especially this year those videos can compensate the lockdown blues. Its my second season without snowboarding. Please make some more videos like this one😍 The sound and the speedgauge in km/h are definitely adding up to the experience.
Thanks! Sorry for the late reply, missed this first time around. Unfortunately I didn't get to ride any lifts this year, but roll on next winter and I'll be making way more of these!
3.5 hours? That was quite the run! Some insane speeds you clocked during it too!
2h40m for that hike, keep up the good work!
I just watched it, but then I read the description.. popping in the headphones and going full screen baby! Lets go again!
Nice!
This vid legit gave me butterflies all the way throught, can't wait to go out snowboarding myself! Wish i had that nice of a mountain to ride down tho!
Considering my big brain theory (witch is too complicated for you all to understand so I'm not going to explain it) I think it took you 3hours 24minutes and 78seconds
😂👍
If your a big brain, you would spell "which" correctly
@@Regional-Automotive not gonna point out his 78 seconds?
@@kylelamont1214 lol
If this is the price is right I'm gonna diddo but make it 79 seconds.
thanks for putting it also in km/h metric system. really interessting
too bad it’s fake
@@zolo4747 how?
Omg Sensei you updated. Great job!
Thanks! 😄
Nice. 1 hour 57 minutes. Whatever the time Chapeau Sir!
Chapeau to you!
There’s no mountains where I live and I couldn’t go skiing this year because of the pandemic. Your vids are cool replacement
That's a shame, thanks for watching my vids though 🙏
earning those turns Malcolm!
You hijacked a snowmobile and rode to the top in less than 15 minutes. Simple.
😂😂😂
Malcolm. You always make the viewer feel like thay are making the run an that's a good thing. Keep up the good work. love it.
Thanks Mark!
I think it took 120 minutes to reach the top! It feels good to see another ski area from the people's point of view, i love your videos keep it up!
I'm curious how long it took to climb the mountain, and I wish every participant good luck!
Awesome video homie, I really loved how you didn't use any music and just use the natural sounds, it also looked like you had a lot of fun
Thanks bud!
I reckon 2hrs 37 mins. Loving the look of the conditions and really jealous!
This is Heaven! Approx, 4 hours in heaven mindset! I'm proud of you!
Thanks man!
Alright, i'll try to do the math for this but i'm probably gonna be wrong :)
In the beginning, your max. vertical elevation is 2784 meters. at the bottom you are around 1780 meters which means you climbed approx. 1004 meters. Let's say the average hiker climbs around 2 miles per hour. Since you are climbing quite steeply with gear and on snow, I will reduce this to around 1.25 miles per hour which equals = 0.5588 meters per second.
Since time = distance / speed --> 1004/0.5588 = 1,796.7072297781 seconds
Seconds converted to hours = 3.2768631193828055004 which is approx. = 3 hours, 16 minutes and 37 seconds.
I am probably wrong and did not take into account other factors such as break times so it would probably be around 3 hours and 30 minutes or longer :))
Ngl horizontal distance also matters so I have no idea xD + it seems you reached the top when the sun is setting making it seem like it took longer than what I estimated haha
Serious Maths going on there, appreciate the effort!
Great to see your videos...I hope the resorts won’t go bankrupt and that skiing or boarding will be impossible...
I hope not! 🤞
That snow is so beautiful. Its hard to find a mountain with such nice snow in NY. All ice here. We jealous
Thanks for watching, yeah I am lucky to live here!
Huh, so that's what heaven looks like... These are really rad videos Malcolm, and are the the best possible alternative when a deadly virus and/or lack of snow and/or funds prevents one from getting to the real thing. Love it
Thanks, can't wait to get back this winter and make more!
2h2m, sick video though. very interesting perspective seeing these empty resorts
Thanks Ben! Yes it's really weird. They are randomly pisting slopes every so often I guess to keep the snow pressed down in case the resort ever opens, hopefully it will, but it's looking less and less likely!
Nice early morning Corduroy🤙
5:20 hours..? Considering the position of the sun... who knows.. just guessing :P
Video starts at 2,784 m of elevation, ends at 1,779 m, so almost exactly 1,000 m of elevation gain. The run had several flat sections, which makes it pretty long - but then again, you may have taken shortcuts on the way up. Factor in the heavy snowboard boots and the board on your back... I'll say 3 hours, 42 minutes.
I'd say you need to get out a LOT MORE.😀😀😀😀💔
Man that's some nice corduroy, snow sounds primo too!
Yeah little bit of a melt freeze crust on it at the very bottom, but the rest was ideal!
amazing maybe one day...
If you did it in under 4 hours I'm impressed! My guess is 4 hours and 5 min
2hr50min. Looks great!
1 hour and 42 mins? You a fast man
Wow that cracking sound of the groomed snow, I love it! & my guess is 2h54min
Been playing with the new 360 camera yesterday too!
@@malcolmmoore I've seen it on your instagram page! the quality of your videos is rising fast. 100K subs within 4 months?
I wiped out bad on my first time in barcelona knocked myself out went straight and got some hella speed then woke up to some random spanish dude asking if i was okay 😂 massive respect its the hardest thing ive ever tried and i like my extreme stuff.
I leave a like even before I’ve watched the video 😎😎
Haha my man 🙌
Gratz man!!!
✌
I work at Heavenly and we get to take laps on the fresh groomers every morning before public is on the mountain . Nothing beats the feeling of having fresh groomers all to yourself
I would do anything to board at a mountain like that...nice shredding
It only took covid to shut it down and then about 4 hours of walking up 😂
Looks awesome I think 3hrs 50mins
189 minutes.great vid😀!
Thanks!
...I dunno maybe 2hrs 55min 34seconds ...at 4:12 you're waving to some guys on a snowmobile -I'm thinking maybe get a lift up next time 😄
Haha, yeah I wish, that would save my legs a bit!
🎧 essential
Absolutely!
This is a great video. None of that bullshit music. People get off on filming with their gopro and putting garbage music over the beautiful sound of a snowboard and snow.
Best part about getting speed on a snowboard vs a skateboard...no speed wobbles...on the other hand, if you catch edge- you're gonna have a bad time, can't just bail onto some grass or try to ride it out if it goes south.
Guessing 4h 17min. Beautiful scenery as well.
66 mph! That's insane!
Nice vid! Thanks for the metric units! 😄
👍
Una goduria🚀🏂Great Malcolm💪🎆
Loooooooooooonnnnnnn. Lovin ya work Sir.
Thanks boss!
The love I have for you for putting it in mph and km/h
3 hours? This resort is HUGE!
My snowboard boots are definitely turning into slippers with all this hiking!
My guess is 42 minutes
I know a 3 hr 10 min hike when I see one
4 hr 38 min? Not sure but I’m just looking at the sun setting you must of started sorta early too. Looks like a lot of fun! Can’t wait to get back on my board again this winter.
top speed I have hit 146kmp/h. Happy riding 🙂
Sick❗️
Thanks 🙌
amazing!
🙌🙌
4hrs at a guess based on vertical height but the sun set makes me think longer
Nice :)
Thanks 😁
Hi, awesome video again, like all the others. Makes me miss snowboard vacations even more -.- ... Also props to your tutorial videos. You are explaining in such a good and vividly way everybody should be able to understand what you mean and benefit from that. My guess: It took you 2h30min to hike up there. I would love to see your leg work on the snowboard from time to time in such videos :D but anyway, keep it up!
Thanks Marvin! Yeah I hope to get some more tutorials out soon, it's just difficult with the lack of chair lifts, but I have some in the works at the minute!
Alright, i'll try again lmao. You mentioned that you took breaks and the total distance was 3.3 miles = 5.31084 km.
Now we know your horizontal and vertical elevation gain to try and figure out the time it took you. I tried to use a hiking time calculator which gave me a time of 4 hours and 1 minute without breaks but if we are realistic and take into account 20% of breaks it would've taken you around 4 hours and 49 minutes!
Let me know if I'm close or not I will not give up hahaha :)
You're going in the wrong direction!
@@malcolmmoore Uh oh well I ain't giving up :D Ight I made a triangle and found the approx. angle you were hiking at which is around 19°. Did some math and since I went in the wrong direction i'm gonna guess 2 hours and 50 minutes without breaks :)
I'll be sure to let you know when someone does hit the nail on the head!
Second try! I guess you made it in 3 hours and 19 minuts
I now understand why my friends would drive 8 hours to ski in a big mountain. The ski resort near me is small, takes 1 min to descend.
Great video Malcolm, I’d say approx 4 hours 10 mins. Keep the videos going, not gonna be able to go for a long time ☹️
Thanks, that's tough, where in the world are you?
Just a word to all the newbies thinking 'I want to go fast too!'
I ask you, do you know a single trick yet?
Can you ride a whole run switch?
Can you really, really emergency brake?
How is your slalom or boarder cross?
Have you been to park at all yet?
How are your off piste skills?
Have you ever been down a black?
Do you know the run? Is it a quiet red or a blue full of beginners, grannies, kids and ski school snakes?
Is the run in good condition?
Is the visibility good?
Do you have a first aid kit?
Are you tired?
Late comment, but tricks are irrelevant to speed. Sure it can be an indicator for skill, but I’ve snowboarded for like 10 years and don’t really touch tricks
@@agonizin Hey there, fair point. So what's been keeping you busy/entertained on the hills for 10 years?
@@GarrettDevitt I was really young and learned as I got older, and couldn’t go too often
0:45 He FARTED! Musta been nervous!
no way i just won a bakery snowboard from The Whitelines, gassed to ride it hopefully next winter
Awesome, I was entering that comp every day and actually won a jacket! The board is amazing, solid all mountain deck!
Another epic video! 4h
I would've asked for a ride on the back of a snowmobile thus i would say 20 mins + a 10 min break for a hot tea with the awesome view in order to let the guy on the snowmobile disappear from the view! 😂😂
Haha I like it!
Hey Malcolm! Few questions. 1) What kind of stance are you in when you're riding flats and when you're doing those types of speeds? 2) which board are you using there? What type of profile does it have?
+18 and -12. The board is below, but its a pretty typical mid stiff all mountain board. directional camber witha little more give and rocker in the nose!
thebakerysnowboards.com/snowboard-benatar-one/
I'd say.. 4 hours 50 mins. Must have stopped a couple of times along the way to rest
do more tutorials and videos, love your content
Yeah, trying to get some tutorials up too, just so difficult without chairlifts at the minute!
@@malcolmmoore thanks a lot bro, you've helped me a lot but still i find it difficult to improve my turns because in my area there is no ski resort with a piste for beginners, the one i go to is really steep, but still trying
Out of curiosity, how do you track speed and height? Awesome video! Im loving the sound. Takes me right back into memories of past seasons. Hope this year we all can ride again! ...oh 3:10h
I'm using a Garmin Fenix3 watch and then I pull the GPX file into Garmin Virb Edit to make the speedometers!
@@malcolmmoore thanks!
What snowbaord were you using in this video?
70 on a snowboard dayum😳😳
I know this video is 2 years old but hopefully youll see my comment. Love & enjoy the content brotha i was just hoping you could tell me how you got to track your speed
3:28 mins
This is giving me very intense ASMR
Yeah I've recorded it using the same mics they often use for ASMR vids, albeit in less of a relaxing setting 😂
Looks Awesome man!
What is your Stance Angle on the Warpig ?
+18 and -12, but I'm not on the warpig here, I'm on a new board, the link is up in the description! 👍
Yes Malcolm playground all to yourself 🥳💯🙌 Impressed by all the maths calculations going on , I am no good at maths going to base it on how long it takes to hike up there in the summer and gamble that there is a more direct albeit steeper route in winter 2h 58min ⛄️
WHEN you speed up do you use the edges of the board is completely flat? when I go flat I feel like unstable
Usually on an edge depending on the camber (tilt) of the slope, but sometimes I will ride the board completely flat. In this video here I'm mostly always on an edge!

5 and a 1/2 hours im guessing for the hike
3 hours would be my guess
This is so awesome looking. It also shows me how afraid I would be of doing this. lol
Man snowboarding is scary as a beginner
Absolutely enjoy your vids! Greetings from Northern Nevada! (Near Lake Tahoe!) your time to hike? Wild guess about an 1hr 54mins for 3.3miles?
Thanks! I'm jealous of you guys able to go to open resorts right now!
This video reminds me of a video game definitely! I watched your videos before I did my first day learning to board on Mt. Rose! (On Wednesday and still pretty sore) You have exceptional skills and knowledge keep the videos coming anyway you can! (Learned a few fundamentals from them)
Hey Malcolm, are you still using the noir matter quark stabilizer? Curious to hear some long term use feedback.
Yeah sometimes but only with the hero 8, the hero 9 has horizon levelling when recording in linear mode, or when recording in superview with the max lens mod which kind of makes it redundant. Unless you need horizon levelling for wide mode then you dont really need it. Plus the customer support was pants so I don't want to promote them!
@@malcolmmoore dude, I keep hearing customer service horror stories, I guess I just needed confirmation from a fellow snowboarder lol. It’s too bad, really. Was hoping for a wearable gimbal to use with my el grande pole. I’ve got the 9 with some ND Filters and would like to have a bit more control with exposure, using the 180 degree shutter rule. Though low shutter renders hypersmooth useless :/
3:27
Nice work dude how much concentration does it need to be safe. It's like both eyes has to be focused at the same time in one direction and watch the height.
On empty slopes like this you can relax a bit more, but when the lifts are running you have to pay alot more attention to everyone!
2h28 my man. Can’t be far away.
What mountain is this? Nice long runs. Let’s see the big booters
Alpe d'huez in France, no booters at the minute because it's all shut down...
I think that was a solid 3h 7min and 69sec
so that would be 3 hours 8 mins and 9 seconds?!
@@malcolmmoore well yes but no... You see 3h 7min and 69sec is the cool version of 3h 8min and 9sec
how does he measure his speed ?
Here I was wearing the Garmin Fenix3 watch and then I put the GPS into Garmin Virb Edit to make the speedometers, hope that helps!
@@malcolmmoore yes, thanks so much! love your videos by the way.
PLEASE ! wher can i get a speed measurer like this ??? i need the same for my next season !
Without the use of any fancy calculations as I’m a bit crap at maths, I’m just gonna put it out there and say 2h 43mins 18secs!
It looks much slower than it is on the dashboard. More than 100 km it is crazy speed
