I wasn't born a Hindu, but I started following Sanatan Dharma when I was a teenager (around 2005). At that time in America, public celebrations of Diwali were few and far between. It's so great to see how many more people are discovering this holiday and with it the beautiful philosophies of Sanatan Dharma as well as the rich history and culture of India.

Don't you have Laxmi puja on that day in Nepal? I had read that Nepalese have only Laxmi puja on that day not Deepavali. In my state we have Kali Puja on that day

Diwali is celebrated after the 19th day of Vijayadashami. Lord Rama killed Demon Ravana on Vijayadashami and returned back to Ayodhya which took him 19 days from Lanka to Ayodhya. People of Ayodhya welcomed him with lights and hence Diwali. A festival which older then any known festivals of the earth today 1000s of year older then Christmas or any other festival
