Moffat Tunnel, started in 1923 and completed in 1927, is located 10 miles west of the town of Rollinsville and tunnels under the Continental Divide, connecting Rollinsville (and Denver) to the ski areas and Grand Junction on the Western Slope. At 6.2 miles long and sitting at 9,239 ft. above sea-level, it has previously held the title of the longest tunnel in the world, and is now the 2nd longest tunnel in North America behind Cascade Tunnel, located at Stevens Pass in the Cascades in Washington.

Wow, like the sound of the fast running creek & the signal change, plus the HD made it like watching this in a movie theater.
You get just 20-30 miles east of this particular spot, and it may as well be Kansas. Colorado is total plains on the east, and mountains to the west, right down the middle, a sudden break.... Western Colorado is suddenly beautiful. The misnomer of businesses called "foothills" this and "foothills" that. We have no foot-hills, simply plains, then mountains. The Moffat comes out at the Winter Park Ski Area. Fresh air, blue skies, and the smell of pine... Harsh winters, high altitude, for the hearty...
The real Colorado begins west of the Continental Divide. All that stuff to the east is just another big city.
Moffitt tunnel is the 3rd longest tunnel. The 7.01 mile long Flathead tunnel, located in NW Montana on the BNSF Northern Transcon route hold the title to 2nd longest.
What's very interesting at the beginning, is watching the signals, which are dark, light up with red after we hear the dispatcher advise #5 they have clear track. 0:57 in video.
Beautiful setting and very nicely shot video!
Pleasant trip. Its natural like our country Indonesia, its natural fresh green ... Greetings from Indonesia
Great shot of the Southern Pacfic on what used to be Southern Pacfic track before UP took over. It would been complete with a Rio Grande engine as well. Great video.
Yeah I’d much rather see black and gold or red and gray tunnel motors than the “you pee” yellow.
Colorado is such a beautiful state and the Moffat tunnel is an interesting rail fan spot. nice post.
Great video, thanks for posting this!
A very photogenic line that doesnt get much attention. Thanks for sharing
Moffatt Tunnel was one of the critical pieces leading to the end of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
BTW, nice video, and thanks for including the scanner in the soundtrack. Always enjoy my railfanning more when I have my scanner, to hear what's going on. Makes those longer waits between trains a little less tiresome.
Listen to the sound echo down the canyon after the last engine rumbles by. Love that sound
Great videos 👍🏼
Great video! Thanks for sharing!!
Great Video. Loved It.
Great video and sound
Excellent train video ...
Very fine video.
Rode thru there years ago on the original CZ, seemed like it took 15 mins or more to get thru the tunnel. Awesome view on this video.
Belíssimo!! Parabéns!!!
Nice catches
awesome I need to be out there that's a long way from indiana
You imagine the nightmare of two trains meeting in the middle of that tunnel?
Wonderful!! When I was ten years old my Mother, brother and I rode a train from Oakland Ca to Denver CO. I remember going through one tunnel when we had just started dinner between Salt Lake City and Denver. Either it was a very long tunnel or very slow train because we were just finishing dessert when we came out the other side. Could this have been the tunnel? Thanks
Hi MrPhil0267, there are many tunnels from SLC to Denver but its most likely this was the tunnel you remember most. Its almost 7 miles long.
I too rode the train with my mom & brothers from Denver to Oakland, CA when I was about 8 in 1959. After High School I went to work for the D&RG railroad and actually worked inside of the Moffat tunnel..and it was quite an experience for sure.
But it doesn't get any better than a train ride when youre a young boy! Haha.
Take care and God bless.
MK
id love to be one of the crew sitting in the front cab. these guys to see all kinds of amazing sights that normal civilians never get to see. all these rail ways go through such interesting places. i wonder how many of these train operators sighted bigfoot while rolling through the wilderness.
great video's
Haven't been to Moffat tunnel and don't recall - does Moffat have a door and exhaust fans, as does Cascade tunnel?
Never mind (duh). Googled it and got my answer...
awesome
Os trem de cargas ai são top demais 🙂🙂
1:55 EXPRESS COMING THROUGH!
Thanks, and the Moffat Sub is a great line
Amazing video and shots Nico! Nice catch on the 2 ex SP AC44CW's too!
Yeah glad to see they are on home territory!
All that horsepower is bowel rumbling!!!
Mac tunnel on the mountain sub in BC is longer.
Drives by my house every day waking me up and shaking the whole house. Fucking annoying
will never again go here unless black tunnel motors come back.
The California Zephyr runs pass there.
When I went out to California for Christmas in 2001 and rode Amtrak, I don't recall ever passing through Moffat Tunnel.
EricEbac22 oh ok I think you took the detour route on the Amtrak.
Mychael Hall We may have, but as I said, I don't recall going through Moffat Tunnel.
Nice shot at the end those big brutes carrying the load.
"Tri-clops" @8:25!
這種隧道的造型氣派又思古 感覺出國境的氣氛 讚…………
The tunnel, that killed the KM's.
Terrible sight them "Yello Bellies" where the Classy D&RGW black and orange locomotives should be
Cliff West I've been through Moffat Tunnel aboard the Rio Grande Zephyr in 1974
I agree! It’s not the same without the Rio’s tunnel motors. They also need to reopen Tennessee Pass.
Named my ex after that tunnel...
The beginning is way too long. Could use some editing.
up has the nastiest looking engines give them a bath
David Anderson look up Tennessee pass right before it closed. Some of the helpers had their windows blacked out from soot
I know they are horrible looking
They ain’t movin they ain’t makin money, got it,they don’t needa be washed son.
@@Trainmaster1907 wish they would reopen that line.
