    Garbage truck caught on camera and narrowly misses sliding off road after an uncontrolled slide down an icy road. The driver fanned his brakes down to the point that his spring brakes engaged, locking up his rear axles.

    Not sure what happened after the camera stopped, but it looked like he had fairly decent control of the truck based on the condition of the road. That’s one VERY skilled driver behind that wheel!

      I drove big trucks cross country for about 15 yrs.
      I'm retired now. I've been in situations like that and it's nerve wracking. This guy did a good job. He was still on the road and the wheels were down. He wins.
      A drag chain on the trailer would have been easier on his heart. 😏

      You're right, a drag chain on one outside rear dual BEFORE the hill would have done the trick. 90% of staying out of trouble is avoiding getting into a situation like that by using a rare thing called foresight. Nonetheless, he handled the situation pretty well after he was sliding. That was pretty tricky for a moment. 😱

    He is just taking things slow to keep as much grip on the surface that he possibly can...I'd say that looked incredibly controlled compared to what I'd call an out of control truck...Or as my driving instructor for my normal car drivings license would say "Did anyone get hurt? Were there any types of damage? No? It just took a little longer? Oh, so we got home safely?"

    One thing I learned driving a semi over the road years ago is ride the clutch not the brake on slick roads. My learning lesson was in Pennsylvania , a whiteout hit me and I was going down a steep grade I slammed and stood on the brakes went side ways and almost off a cliff got it back under control and starting working that clutch and barely the brakes and lived to tell about it.
    I was also the truck in 2000 that weaved through that big deadly pile up during that huge ice storm in OK city when it all broke loose because of 15 + truck convoy going to fast .But although that day I was the only truck that didn't crash, turnover or kill anyone during that pile up and came out right through the crashing I can honestly say God had the wheel. Oh but let me say I wasn't running with those guys but as soon as the last truck got ahead of me and they said come on man let's go all hell broke loose. I had to bob and weave but I got through it all and made it to the truckstop . It was terrible a lot of deaths and the roads were shut down a long time for that one.
    BUT I thank God Almighty I'm still alive.

  • @etiennedauphin
    @etiennedauphin 2 года назад +2

    Born and raised in Canada. That road was a skating rink and to me that driver was barely in control. If there had been a car or a truck coming in the opposite direction, they were both doomed. I mean, when gravity is pulling a vehicle down the road’s incline you need better tires or a different plan to get to point B. He could have tried to put one wheel on the shoulder though, although my experience has been that it can also become covered in ice. In that case you end up just being closer to skid off the road completely.

    • @gravytrainoutdoors
      @gravytrainoutdoors  2 года назад +2

      100% agree. I always get a kick out of the keyboard warriors that say he was in full control and I was the one sliding all over the place. I sure as heck wouldn’t have wanted to see that truck sliding down the hill at me if I was driving up it. I’ve driven many miles in fully loaded trucks on roads like this and if there is any doubt… chain up. Then like you said, drive with a tire on either a dry patch or sand strip etc. Sometimes I would chain up a drag axle on my trailer before the start of a big hill where you take a long chain and drive over it then wrap the tire and hook it back on itself and then chain the other end to the frame. It will drag that tire and keep the trailer from getting away on you in a situation like this. This guy got lucky

      Ross Lambert not sure what your definition of being out of control is? He had next to zero control over his truck and it was all he could do to keep it out of the ditch. Classic keyboard warrior comment! Thanks for watching!

      @@gravytrainoutdoors Keyboard warrior ?? Well motor mouth I've been trucking OTR for 42+ years now with the last 21 as an owner / operator running up into the Yukon and Northwest Territories hauling specialized cargo. I'm accident free and have 3.2 million miles behind me. I am very much qualified to voice my opinion on this misleading clickbait video. The driver of that roll-off truck did a good job getting it down the hill ! So, genius, what did he hit ? Did he go off the road?? Did he damage the truck?? Did he endanger any other vehicles ?? I think even you can answer these questions.......

      The flashers wouldn't stop, it's not a pickup truck.

      Paradise Road it was so stupid, the guy had chains on his truck but couldn’t run them without taking the fenders off. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen other guys refuse to chainup until it’s too late. They either spinout and slid backwards off the road or spin the chains off their tires after throwing chains on after the fact

    Serious sliding on the icy road for sure but not out of control. In fact the driver controlled his rig very well under the conditions.
