@@Zack_Zander Chen is a shikigami. Shikigami in Touhou is basically a magical version of a computer program: a spirit, created by a magician to do certain tasks, and then "installed" into an inanimate object, or a living organism.
"Chen" is the name of the shikigami spirit, created by Ran. The can youkai she possesses and the entirely different being.
@@MrNoobomnenie Not entirely accurate - it's noted in Chen's profile in Perfect Cherry Blossom that her personality and appearance are the same, whether she is currently being possessed or not. Also, that her possession can come undone if she's so much as splashed with cold water.
Ran's mastery over Chen is not even a pale shadow compared to Yukari's mastery over the fox youkai that Ran inhabits, whose personality is noted as being completely suppressed. I would think of Chen as more of a cyborg, with implants that can be activated to enhance her cognitive or magical abilities (and are made by the lowest bidder, thus weak to water), but whether her implants or active or not, she's still mostly the bakeneko known as Chen.

Holy shit, I remember watching this when I started being a fan of Touhou back in 2013. Time is flying... I can only imagine the hardcore fans who started when the first game came out.

Glad you're on board! the fandom sometimes gets weird and all, but they're mostly nice and friendly people, and yeah it's weird when you feel attached to the characters but after a while it's actually a pretty feeling, and after the years like me, i joined the fandom like 6, 7 years ago, it's very very memorable, hope it is a nice experience for you too!

It's about budget. A fanwork with no budget and no suits can be as detailed and hi quality as it wants
What are you guys talking about? Backgrounds are almost still-frames, and so are the characters that suddenly jump in to the screen. That only leaves the dancing characters, but the dance is very repetitive, so they can just re-use the same frames.
Furthermore, the whole thing is just a 2-minutes long music video. Meaning that there isn't much frames to draw.
And despite all that, the art still doesn't look that good. Characters' faces look a bit odd to me, and the shadows are just circles. It's amazing for a fanmade animation, but nowhere near the level of professional animes, let alone the ones made today.
