i would still try to do jobs on my car that are within my ability because fixing your own stuff is very very satisfying and there are handful of things on this world that can give us that level of satisfaction.
I'm no EE, but I think they may have known this might happen. The double/triple piece connector is for strain relief. Instead of breaking something, it just pulls apart.
I don't agree. Strains induced by the part being dropped never is a consideration to a design engineer. They just want compliance of the part under NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES --- and falling isn't normal.
Another great tip for getting electrical tape (or teflon, or ...) into a tight spot, is make a wrap around the end of a pen or pencil. Because it's small, and has a built in handle, it makes it super easy to get into tight spaces.
A truly great movie! A guy sports flick (starring women!) wrapped in a chick flick. I got lots of "caring husband" points by finding seats with my wife, making a concession run, coming back as the flashback and the good stuff started, then going to the Real Men's room when the flashback ended. I rejoined my wife as the weepy stuff wrapped up and we were all smiles.

I actually took the tape tip and modified it. I put my "mini roll" socket on my drill and and spun it slowly to get the tape on and all I had to do was hold the tape roll! Great video, great presentation!
Two things, 1: why four cables going to a two pin connector 2: with the tape and socket trick, if you put a short extension in the socket it would be much easier to wind the tape onto it. Hope Mrs O doing OK after her procedure. 👍👍
Told my Mrs she looked smokin this am, as she headed out, she said you ain’t gettin nothin til that bathroom floor is fixed. Oh well. Nice job Mr O, as ever.

That looked like a pretty high quality contact. Nice weather seals, even has several layers of them. You should send a bungee cord back with the car, so the guy has one to hang the caliper in, for next time.
Hey guy, I know this video is a few years old but you saved me some trouble. I had the same thing happen to me, I saw the wires were out and couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t go back in. Had to pull the other half of the pin from the connector and put it on the wire. Cheers!
“A league of their own” ha ha great quote!! Fantastic memory for previous issues boss!!! Love the channel. Been a backyard mechanic for years 😂 I’ve learned a lot of computer diagnostics from you as well as many other slick, quick tips👍👍 You da man
I’m a technician for Honda in California, very common problem with DIYers, that cable does NOT need to be disconnected to do your rear brakes , simply loosen the bracket from the brake line if you feel you don’t have enough movement from the caliper , typical fix is new harness which runs about less than 80 dollars, not too expensive and not too bad to replace! Just a few 12 mm bolts
What I learned from this video: cars suck and there should be a South Main Auto everywhere there's a Main Street... Erik, you have to clone yourself for the greater good
I found our SMA where I live. It's such a relief to have a place you can count on. I am a car guy but don't have the diagnostic tools for some of these issues. I had a CEL on my daughter's Mazda that was kicking my but. Thought I had it figured down to an intake manifold air leak. I took it to this shop to confirm and they showed the PCV hose was cracked. Had to remove the manifold to get to it. Worth the $179 diagnostic charge to confirm before I tore into it. They were right on.
Even more pro tip With the tape trick, use a 17mm 3/8s fits perfectly in the end of your finger and you can take your drill on a low speed to put the tape on the socket and don’t you have to sit there manually taping the socket
I always used a short piece of 3/8 polypropylene tubing. I could hold the ends of the tube between thumb and forefinger if I needed to unspool more than an inch or two of tape in quick order... also, the Super 88 was the only tape I'd ever use. Eric's correct about it being the best!
@@greatnortherntroll6841 I’m from a Benz dealer never actually heard of that tape but for our wiring jobs we have to make it look factory as per Mercedes Benz.. so we just use the tape they supply us but it’s the best I’ve used. Basically feels and looks like hockey tape
Does Benz use the self shrinking tape? That stuff is amazing but equally scary. Once the backing film is removed there’s some chemical activated witchcraft that makes it self heat shrink. Folklore has it that if you wrap your finger it will cut the circulation off.

Here's a free tip Friday. If you're using an Android-based scantool that has bluetooth, you can connect a BT mouse and keyboard to it, prop it up on your bench and essentially have a scantool workstation. Not entirely sure this works on scantools, because I can't afford one, but I know it works on all Android-based phones and tablets, so I'm guessing that it works on anything Android. Enjoy.. Love this channel Edit: I’m an electrician by trade and yes Super 88 is the best tape on the market, bar none! And use your 10mm? That’s ridiculous. Nobody actually has a 10 mm. They are all lost
I'm glad to see that your not just a parts changer as most mechanics are these days! I'm 72 and only twice have had a vehicle in a shop to be fixed; but today it's hard as most things are not serviceable, but just replace. I miss the days when I could take things apart and grease and put back together. I'm not impressed that there are no more greasable joints/drive line parts! I guess that a service now is change the oil and fill the windshield washer tank; HaHa!
My boss showed me that trick off winding elec tape but I wind it around a blue electrical wire joiner for even tighter spots and it worked a treat when I was wiring up Landi-Hartog LPG computer systems in cars back in the early 90's.

Keep up the good work love seeing the enhancements aka close ups don’t always need to be in the frame to narrate, but I know close ups are not always practical while applying your skills
You are amazing for this :D I'm going to be changing my rotors for the first time soon and my biggest fear is dropping the caliper and stretching the break line or the e-break motor line. Knowing that this is a possibility for a fix is such a sigh of relief lol. Thank you!
It’s amazing how you fix even the newest of technology for the DIY mistakes. I always recommend your channel to a guy who’s going to fix his car himself.
Actuators are made by several companies. The connector you saw has adapter terminals to a universal pin terminal used on all the actuators. There are several different harness connectors used by different brand model and year cars. All use some type of adapter terminal.
The funny part is the “automatic parking brake” actually started waaaay back there as “hill start assist” for vehicles with manual transmissions. Essentially if you rolled backwards on a hill it applied the parking brake. Kept people from burning up clutches for the most part. Some Class 8 trucks still have this system, works the same - applies the rear axle & trailer air brakes to keep from rolling backwards.
@@rpp1348 the AMT in your Volvo still has a clutch so the hill start is still effective at saving it. No torque converter in a class 8 trans, it’s an “Automated Manual Transmission”. Some now even have a dual clutch setup. The XE package from them I think is one that the dual clutch AMT is an available option.
VW's variant of the hill start assist is based off of not releasing the brake fluid pressure, and is available on cars with mechanical parking brakes and electronic.
+1 on the Super77. After a friends car was having dash display and radio problems. Found the stereo shop that installed the radio a few years prior had just cut the wires, twisted the conductors together then put on a few wraps of the cheapest electrical tape known to man. The adhesive on the tape had cooked into a liquid goo with the tape unrolling, falling off and shorting the wires to others in the bundle.
I can imagine the engineer that designed that connector giving his evil laugh when imagining a mechanic looking at the pins and seeing two intact pins in the holes.
look closer and you'll see the inner one is missing or recessed(the actual conductive electrical terminal), the outer piece is a stainless/spring steel for greater tensioning and anti-vibration of the inner terminal(if I'm remembering correctly). that kind of thing is dealt with a lot in other fields which have tons of wiring and connectors.
@@throttlebottle5906 Very keen insight. Thanks for your Comment. In addition to watch Eric’s videos, I really enjoy reading the Comments, because many times I learn all the more from the experience!
Well done! Strange connector configuration had me fooled, as I had one with the exact same issue. Continuity checked "ok", as the terminal must have been touching the metal that is still visible with the connector pulled...BUT - too mush resistance to carry the necessary amperage.
It isn't so much the complexity increasing prices - it is inflation. My first car, a 1970 Mercury Capri, cost me $2790 out the door. My mother bought a house in Hayward, California for $15,000 the year before - Zillow estimates the "value" at more than $600K now. The practice of "replacing hardware with software" actually lowers costs a lot. Electronics are pretty cheap to make and software costs only whatever the development and maintenance costs are. Ten or ten million... same costs.
@@flagmichael actually the average cost of a vehicle is significantly more today than in the 70s even taking inflation into account. Atleast from when I've researched it. However, cars are much much safer today.
South Main Auto... The connector is made that way so if the technician drops the caliper when performing a brake job the two pieces will come apart and not damage the actuator, plastic connector or the wires so that the actuator and harness doesn't have to be replaced.
Hay Eric o very interesting, good to see that you repaired it most people would have just replaced the lead . It’s the difference between a service person and a good mechanic.

@@SouthMainAuto Years ago I bought a cheap roll of soft iron wire. I cut off a piece of it and use it to hang calipers, always worked great and so cheap you could use enough to hang from wherever was handy for the vehicle being worked...

With SMA's fair prices and honesty, if I lived within driving distance I wouldn't be doing my own auto repair.
i would still try to do jobs on my car that are within my ability because fixing your own stuff is very very satisfying and there are handful of things on this world that can give us that level of satisfaction.
Problem is; we don't know what his prices are! He certainly knows his craft......

I'm no EE, but I think they may have known this might happen. The double/triple piece connector is for strain relief. Instead of breaking something, it just pulls apart.
Makes sense being that connector is most likely gonna see some strain every time a brake job is done.
That very well could be in case the DIYer gets frustrated and yanks on the cable cause he didn’t take tire off.
@@thewrightstuff6174 It's hard to believe that an engineer would think about the end user, but there's always this glimmer of hope.
@@TreyCook21 Well this is Honda. Perhaps they think a little different, one can always hope.
8:00 -- "A League of their Own" uttered by Tom Hanks
A truly great movie! A guy sports flick (starring women!) wrapped in a chick flick. I got lots of "caring husband" points by finding seats with my wife, making a concession run, coming back as the flashback and the good stuff started, then going to the Real Men's room when the flashback ended. I rejoined my wife as the weepy stuff wrapped up and we were all smiles.
Lol yes it was. Along with some other sayings he had.
Alan Jackson - Remember when
He didnt utter those words. He said it with authority.
Just want to say “ thank you” for taking the time to make these videos. They are tremendously helpful for a do it yourself person like me. I’m buying a shirt to show my appreciation for your valuable knowledge that you willingly share.
I actually took the tape tip and modified it. I put my "mini roll" socket on my drill and and spun it slowly to get the tape on and all I had to do was hold the tape roll! Great video, great presentation!
Two things,
1: why four cables going to a two pin connector
2: with the tape and socket trick, if you put a short extension in the socket it would be much easier to wind the tape onto it.
Hope Mrs O doing OK after her procedure.

Told my Mrs she looked smokin this am, as she headed out, she said you ain’t gettin nothin til that bathroom floor is fixed. Oh well. Nice job Mr O, as ever.
I suggested your channel to my daughter's boyfriend who is studying in college to become a Class A mechanic... mentioned to him that you are one of the best channels for learning... he seems to agree.
Thanks for the video! Your troubleshooting techniques are top notch. I’ve been teaching industrial electrical maintenance for many years and your way of finding the root cause of the problem is one of the best IMO. We need an auto shop like yours in northeast Indiana. Keep up the good work!

Always a pleasure taking these trips with you Eric!!! Thanks for posting. I’m glad it’s not just me finding these little nuances with the over-engineered junk. Lol
Reminds me of a chacing a open circ. On a 2004 trailblazer I got 2nd for free, IAT circuit opened. Hey Eric - we also have a South Main Auto clone of our own here in Springfield illinois, its called Verns Auto Repair. Family owned, great shop, capable mechanics, fair prices and honest as the day is long. Only place I take my truck.
Just yesterday Eric I was frustrated with two roles of electrical tape having near zero adhesion. I thought I needed to search out a quality tape, and here you show Scotch Super 88. I'm buying a few roles quickly. Thanks for the "unsponsored" product plug!
Glad I could help!

Erric does real-time logical diagnostic work and identifies the problem at hand as a true professional should. Here’s to you sir, where I am located I can’t even get local shops and dealers to be honest about changing my fluids much less quality repairs. We need a million more like you 😎
Eric, the only part required was using your grey cells, thank you for sharing
As my 2017 Acura ILX is out of warranty now, there will be a lot of small jobs done by me. I'm just glad cars of about the same age are coming into your shop so that I can get a heads up on what to watch for..
Aside from being a wonderful mechanic and truly customer-focused, Eric O is *such* a hopeful romantic!
Hopeful! 🤣
You are correct sir! Alan Jackson did "Remember When", excellent song as well as excellent troubleshooting!
A nice Ivan approved NPR. Thanks Dr. O!
Eric. Thanks again for a great video. Because of your videos I no longer pass up the electrical pages in my repair manual.
Every DIYers nightmare - a simple job gone bad with some bizarre, inexplicable hiccup like this. Good info to put in my mental file cabinet. Thanks as always, Eric.
Unfortunately many techs think it’s like baseball…. If I succeed 3 of 10 times I am awesome!!!!!!!
You Eric are one of the best at your thinking your way through a problem. Thanks for making us keep the faith
That looked like a pretty high quality contact. Nice weather seals, even has several layers of them. You should send a bungee cord back with the car, so the guy has one to hang the caliper in, for next time.
The Japanese make nice wiring harnesses. Cuts out most of the faults their competitors cars get.
Been a backyard mechanic for years 😂 I’ve learned a lot of computer diagnostics from you as well as many other slick, quick tips👍👍
You da man
I’m a technician for Honda in California, very common problem with DIYers, that cable does NOT need to be disconnected to do your rear brakes , simply loosen the bracket from the brake line if you feel you don’t have enough movement from the caliper , typical fix is new harness which runs about less than 80 dollars, not too expensive and not too bad to replace!
Not if you have man-hands. I need 24mm. LOL
Folklore has it that if you wrap your finger it will cut the circulation off.
never seem to stop amazing me with your desire to find what's wrong and figure out how to fix it. the connector issue was great just figuring out how it works an connects all the intricate things needed to reconnect a connector that had pulled apart. Another quality job done with a happy customer.....and Mrs.O. collecting the bill payment and thinking about that new designer dress she is going to get for herself !!!!!

Actuators are made by several companies. The connector you saw has adapter terminals to a universal pin terminal used on all the actuators. There are several different harness connectors used by different brand model and year cars. All use some type of adapter terminal.

Don't forget about Scanner Danner
I like the way you make a comment about Mrs I when she walks by. She sounds very precious! Good on you mate! Ian from Australia.❤️

My 2015 Volvo day cab has this system with an auto trans… kinda redundant.
@@panzerveps My Challenger works that way as well. Uses the ABS system to keep the rear brakes applied until there is a second or 2 of throttle input.
Studebaker had that in the early 60's. They called it the hill-holder clutch.
Thanks for providing quality entertainment for people who love watching things getting fixed. Just enough OCD to make my day.
So...now I know where all my 10 mils went...in Eric O's electrical tape.

Customer states I changed my brake pads and the E-Brake light is on.(( Leaves out the I droped the mamajama)) lol.
Customer did a Scotty Kilmer.....dropped the brake caliper and let it hang by the hose!

Very keen insight.
I wish they would stop overcomplicating everything and lower the cost of vehicles. Ridiculous, Great job though. That was a tricky one.
When you need a clip to hold the pins in the connector, it's over-engineered. Some of these newer connectors were designed by committee.
That's just one , one connector on a vehicle with many
South Main Auto... The connector is made that way so if the technician drops the caliper when performing a brake job the two pieces will come apart and not damage the actuator, plastic connector or the wires so that the actuator and harness doesn't have to be replaced.
Morning everyone. This should be a good one *sips coffee*

I wanted to say great job on this video. You saved me a whole lot of time when I ran into the same issue with the EPB. I was ready to order parts until I looked at the harness you pointed out. Fixed it for a total of 5 minutes and couple cents worth of electrical tape. Thank you.
so make sure the wires are longer than the hose when letting the caliper hang...
Correct :)
Or just use a coat hanger to hold up the calipers to the strut/coil/etc, e.g., if you need to pull rotors or have calipers off for extended time.
@@SouthMainAuto Years ago I bought a cheap roll of soft iron wire. I cut off a piece of it and use it to hang calipers, always worked great and so cheap you could use enough to hang from wherever was handy for the vehicle being worked...

Fun fact - at 3M they used to (maybe still do - I haven't worked there for a while) call the electrical tape (the super 33 and super 88) "Black Gold" because of how successful a product line it is. Great stuff (one of the few that remain flexible even down to very low temperatures) - definitely worth the cost!
