@@BudgetPedalChap Oh, i liked it very much, you did a great job with this demo. I came here, because i just bought a new Tom'sline Engineering BLACK TEETH ABT-3 Rat clone. Sounded great, but when turned off no signal gets through. Have to return it. Was searching for an alternative and luckily found your channel. :-) My plan was, to stack a Rat clone with an EarthQuakerDevices Acapulco gold. :-)
@@BudgetPedalChap Bought the Acapulco gold several years ago. Was impressed, but at that time not really into fuzz tones and stoner music. So the pedal was laying around for years. But after playing in a cover band for so many years i got bored and discovered the Acapulco again. For those who dont know, the Acapulco does a badass fuzztone, nearly like a broken amp with destroyed speakers. ;-) But the pedal has only one knob: volume. :-) So tonewise its not versatile. But, a rat, especially the versatile clones with some more options, can give you the tone you want and more distortion or fuzz on top! As i said above, i wasnt in this stoner thing but now i feel like a new world has opened for me. :-) Right now i am testing another pedal in front of the acapulco, an old Reverend Drivetrain II. Man, what a wall of sound! :-))) The Drivetrain has a very high output and can produce some really dirty tones when wanted. So you can use the Drivetrain as a booster plus adding some dirt.
Nuno just uses it as a boost- no distortion- the clipping isn't engaged. he just uses the volume to push his amp into overdrive- which means you need an amp with a good preamp that can be overdriven and sound nice. Which generally speaking means- tube amp, or- nowadays you can get a higher end amp sim like a UAFX pedal and it responds just like the real thing to a boost like the Rat. I use the UAFX Lion 68- it's a 68' Plexi but it has the Brown mod. that Eddie Vanhalen made famous. If I set my UAFX pedal to a fairly hot distortion already, then hit it with the Rat just using the volume- it adds just a bit of bite and tons of sustain. It's the best lead tone I've ever found- especially if you get a good delay on it. Nuno is a smart man- I've never seen anyone use the Rat the way he does- but man it sounds good. You would never think a Rat could do that tbh- they're usually too thick and wooly for my taste- I'm not big on fuzz. But using it like this- beats any compressor or boost I've ever tried.
Mosky Audio Black Rat Distortion is on my board more than any RAT clone, mainly due to the size but it does come darn close to my original early 80's RAT with less noise and batter AC adapter option.
I see a lot of people cracking on the opamp switch - to me this is one of my favorite aspects - to me it is more like a treble switch which gives the pedal more of the original’s bright attack and when in down position is the darker mode which i actually prefer with P90s - great pedal with the main rat variants that make it interesting !
Hmm- man, Mosky always freaks me out. They have some really good pedals- not just "good for the price" I mean just good- period. I have 200-300-dollar pedals on my board, I freely admit I'm a bit of a snob- I generally like to get the nicest, best thing I can get. I fall victim to that idea that you get what you pay for- if it costs a lot, it must be good. But I always have Mosky on my board as well- sitting right by my high dollar boutique stuff- because it stands up. The Silver Horse sounds as good or better than many of the boutique ODs I've heard. Their Magnetic Delay, which a clone of the Keeley Mag Echo- sounds fantastic- even the modulation is cool, and I generally don't like modulated delays. Joyo is another one that ppl shouldn't pass up- budget pedals, but man they sound good. Their Splinter, which is their version of a fat rat- is a really good pedal. Their Zip Amp, which is a BB preamp- also a great pedal. I use their 10 band EQ all the time to shape different drives. You don't have to spend a fortune to have a really good rig nowadays. You can- and it's fun to do, but you could do a whole board of nothing but Mosky, Joyo, and Caline - and really shock ppl with how good it sounds.
Absolutely. I've not tried a bad Mosky yet, they are always really consistent. We are living in a golden age of guitar pedals at the moment, whatever your budget you can get great sounding pedals.
I don't need another drive pedal (no, really 😂), but I checked this one out, and I actually found there's yet another version: the Mosky Super RAT. Featuring 3 modes: classic RAT, big boost, turbo RAT.
There's a DemonFX "Golden Rat", which seems pretty similar to a Mosky Super Rat but updated with a dip fat/stock switch. I'm torn betweet this and that one, but there are no videos of it anywhere! And I really need to get a new one since my Little Bear R.attack just went to a better place.
Lol the guitar world is one big giant rabbit hole. I'm 56 and trying to learn how to play guitar and find my frequency. Rat or fuzz . Lol or the dualgun Trying to figure out what my first drive pedal should be . Demon fx has that fuzz works 7 . I think to many options on it for me . Been using a fender gtx and I've wasted time trying to find sounds lol
I have a Tom’s line engineering Rat style pedal with the LM308 chip. Black teeth I think it’s called. Bought on Amazon for 20€. Seems to be discontinued but great pedal.
I've done the tube breaker a couple of weeks back and this week we have the overdrive df8 which is their take on the ts808dx. Demon pedals are pretty nice tbf, they tend to have a few more options than the vintage overdrive.
Mine doesn’t have either Op Amp. There is a dual channel op amp like found in the OCD. The slew rates are very similar, but it’s not an LM308N. It’s modelling one in an analog op amp.
I think I preferred the fat mouse but only because it was in a bigger box and had that more traditional look. I think you can't go wrong if you're looking for a rat with either of these 👍
The Rat is under appreciated and misunderstood. Jazz Guitarist John Schofield used one and still does from what I understand. It does more than grind, Chug and Fizzy Fuzz.
Between the demon fx fat mouse and the rat king tone wise are they the same sound quality ? And build quality ? Did you prefer one more based on sound .
Build and sound are pretty much comparable. I would say, if you get one, you probably don't need the other. I think if push come to shove, I prefer the fat mouse, but mainly because it's got less going on so I won't be second guessing myself about using the right setting. Both are great though, if you're after a rat, you aren't going wrong with either.
Hey Chappie. It dawned on me a few mins ago I hadn't seen any updates and wondered if you were on an unprecedented break the last few weeks. Obviously not but I hadn't gotten the notifications from YT. I checked and I was still set to receive all so not sure what was up. Anyway, I have a couple episodes to catch up on but this one was great. Love the dirty sound of this one especially.

The LM308 being "superior" to the OP07 is a myth that needs to die. Both op amps response, slew rate, and frequency attenuation are identical. TBH, I'm not sure what the point of this lm308/op07 switch is, other than people hearing minor part tolerance differences.

The Splinter is amazing and can do low gain really well. Neither this nor the Splinter have the actual LM308N op amp. The Splinter has the 0PO7D and the King Rat has a Dual channel Jfet TL082 like the Fulltone OCD. I think this is what gives this pedal its extra headroom, but it’s not an actual LM308N or an OP07D, but a dual channel Jfet TL082. Both pedals are worth having. Cheers.
