This is the very reason why I love the original story of The Little Mermaid. Though I'm always impressed with Disney's version, but it's always the original that speaks out more than others. It's truthful, sweet, and yet so sad because of the moral we learn from it. We are have to make scarifies when it comes to love, even if it means that we are unhappy. Still one of favorite fairy tales, number one for me on my list. Thank you so much for uploading this. I love it so much.
This reminds me of when I was little and it was just me and my mom. Shes gone now and i miss her each day however i know i will see her again...I treasure these memories.
The original story WAS about unrequited love and how you suffer when they don't love you back. Hans Christian Andersen actually wrote the story about himself, he was obsessed with an opera singer that viewed him a a friend, and he had a childhood friend that admired HIM but he never felt romantic love for her. It wasn't about a mermaid's fascination w/ human objects really. Its how you can change yourself and who you are for someone that you want, but it's never real love because they never know the real you, and it hurts you worse in the long run.
FFKits The woman he first fell in love with was a Danish woman, named Riborg Viogt and as for the opera singer, who came later, she was Jenny Lind, but sadly she and Riborg had eyes on other men. Indeed, I feel very sorry for Hans or anyone who has gone through unrequited love. It is one of the cruelest of pains. Yet it is very wise and beyond forgiving to love those who won’t love you back in silence, even if they won’t end up. As for Hans, sadly, he learned such - A small pouch containing a long letter from Voigt was found on Andersen's chest when he died, several decades after he first fell in love with her, and after he presumably fell in love with others. Other disappointments in love included Sophie Ørsted, the daughter of the physicist Hans Christian Ørsted, and Louise Collin, the youngest daughter of his benefactor Jonas Collin. He wrote in his diary: "Almighty God, thee only have I; thou steerest my fate, I must give myself up to thee! Give me a livelihood! Give me a bride! My blood wants love, as my heart does!" He never married or received the love he sought. He is one of trillions.
I remembered this from a faint distant memory whilst watching Pirates of the Caribbean. I saw this as a school kid in the late 80s early 90s when it was aired on Doordarshan (India's National TV channel). I remembered it to be a very dark rendition of the tale, which is otherwise all song and dance and lovey dovey. I remembered the pain she would have to bear taking each step just to be with the guy. A perfect greek tragedy, is what it is, according to me. So happy to see it again after a lifetime. Awesome.💯

Prince Andrew should've married Pearl instead of Princess Amelia, just being honest about it, then she surely would have her voice back and be with him forever more in his heart
I totally agree you see I grew up watching Disney and the Disney version of The Little Mermaid was personally my favorite because at least it has a happy ending. And the fact that Eric woke up and actually saw a glimpse of Ariel's face and not some random girl who just shows up on the beach and saw him washed up the shore and think that she saved him from drowning ends up falling in love with her but not the little mermaid and just simply let her die. But you know even though this version was very dark and sad it actually did had a happy ending at least she has a final resting place and that was in heaven.
Never forget that this story was written as a love letter from one man to another. Knowing that due to homophobia of the time, their love could never be. But feeling the love none the less. (also when Hans was turned down by his crush whom he sent the letter to, he was found sobbing face-first in his own yard).
This was the creepiest episode yet. watching their hair blowing "under the water" is hilarious lol. The sea witch is either playing a really good act or she really doesn't want Pearl to go on land and this story had the saddest ending compared to Disney's version ... Ugh we sold our hair! Kill the prince! Turned into a spirit really

Coral and Anemone, my dear sisters, farewell. I must reach the seashore by tomorrow morning. Me: I can go with you as far as the palace. Pearl: No, it would just be harder. Goodbye. Me: No, Pearl! Pearl! Pearl! Pearl. 39:14, Me: Pearl! Pearl: Oh, you've come to see me in spite of all the danger. Me: Are you happy, Pearl? I miss you so much. If you ever need me, just hold your pearl necklace high in the air and I'll be there. Pearl: Would you still think of me? 43:40, Pearl, you look so sad. What's the matter? Is the prince gonna marry somebody else? Oh no, Pearl! It can't be true! If he marries another woman, then on the morning after his wedding night, you will lose your human form and turn into sea foam. Isn't that what the Sea Witch said? No! Oh! Oh, I can't bear the thought of you dying, Pearl! There must be some way out of this! No! I don't believe you have to die! You're too good, Pearl! I can't say goodbye forever! I can't! I can't! 45:01, Pearl: Well, the wedding ceremony is over. It will soon be dawn. The first ray of sunshine will bring my death. Coral and Anemone: Pearl! Pearl! Over here, Pearl! Here we are! 45:04-45:47, Pearl: Coral! Anemone! Your hair! What happened? Anemone: Pearl, listen to us. Coral: We went to see the Sea Witch. We needed her help to save your life. Anemone: She made us give her our hair. Coral: In return for this knife. It's the only way out, Pearl. Anemone: You may still come back. Coral: All you need to do is kill the prince. Sea Witch: Pierce him to the heart and when his heart's blood spills on your human legs, they will change back into a tail. Coral: You'll become a mermaid again. Anemone: And then you may return to us in your undersea home. Coral: Once, you've slained the prince, you'll be out of danger. Anemone: But you must hurry. Coral: Father is very worried about you. Anemone: You can be with us again, Pearl. Coral: Be quick. The sun will rise soon. Anemone: We'll be waiting, Pearl. Coral: Come back to us, Pearl. Anemone: Pearl, come back to us. Coral and Anemone: Please, Pearl, come back to us. 46:35, Pearl: I can't. I can't do it. The prince's happiness is my happiness too. 46:49-46:52, Pearl: Yes, it is the only way. I must return to the sea where I was born where I belong. Only through my death, can I keep my love for the prince true and pure and perhaps when I lose my human form, turn into sea foam and fall upon the waves, I may yet find a way to be of service to my prince and to others although his heart was never meant to be mine. Nevertheless, I have learned the meaning of true love. I want to be with him and around him always even if it is in the form of a spec of sea foam on the surface of the ocean. Goodbye, Father. Goodbye, Coral and Anemone, my dear sisters. I'm sorry I couldn't meet you tonight. Farewell, Prince Andrew and Princess Emilia. May happiness be yours. 47:04-47:05, Captain: Sorry, sire. We've searched the whole ship. Prince Andrew: But, I don't understand. Where could she be? Pearl: I'm still here. Oh! And I can speak again. What's happening? Angel # 1: You're one of us now. I've seen the one with Shirley Temple as an adult and in there she didn't loose her voice which she could've tell the prince she was the one that saved his life and even they weren't meant to be after all, she didn't fade into sea foam because Neptune gave her a chance to go back to her old life so that wasn't all that sad.

Keep in mind this version predates disney's movie, and is loyal to the original story.
Just be glad it’s not like the awful 70s anime version! In that one, not only does she die, but they actually turned her to foam!
