I've also find it helpful to add the dots in the corner of the mouth- you can create different shapes/expressions but down turning the dots or making them slightly different shapes, it's a cool way to add variety

Here's a useful tip: the upper lip is always a bit darker than the bottom one because there's a shadow there :)
