This event alone gave knowledge to the human people that never existed before. My question to you is why do you think the human species wasn't advanced in knowledge that day?

Joe is a retired Air Force Test Pilot and our topic of conversation was about Joes' preparation and planning to set the first freefall altitude record......

    • @RationalThinker1859

      F-Mod I understand Kittinger quickly used a drogue chute to stabilise, so he took longer to fall a shorter distance.

    @chrismusack4340 9 лет назад +22

    Let me get this straight...His free fall time is 4min20sec (found this @ 4:20 in this video); on top of that he explains, and I quote, "...which makes Felix the highest human to have flown a capsule" . So..not the only human to have flown a capsule that high...He's the highest human....and his free fall time is 4:20...and Joe Kittinger is so baked he's not even paying attention. Wtf. finally, who the fuck claps after their own speech...?

    It's more about the speed than it is breaking the actual speed of sound in his immediate environment. A nice, if arbitrary measure for his velocity more than anything.

  • @hawkeye0248
    @hawkeye0248 11 лет назад +1

    I do not understand this supersonic record. Felix achieved his highest speed very soon after his jump started, but my point is that at that altitude there is no sound (air is too thin) and sound only came into play when he hit the higher density lower air levels and at that point his speed decreased rapidly (because of the air resistance).

  • @hawkeye0248
    @hawkeye0248 11 лет назад

    Your figures are at sea level. The speed of sound in general decrease with altitude (air density is a better description), because the amount of air molecules to transmit the sound decrease. This is why the speed of sound in water is roughly 3x faster than in air. Felix's jump was mighty impressive, but I just do not understand this claim of a sound record, not only by him, but for anybody.
