Standing Pilates for Seniors - 30 minutes of exercise to Improve Strength & Build Confidence

- Join me for a 3o Minute Standing Pilates for Seniors workout. We will do exercises for balance, corodination and flexibility as well as building strength in your legs and back. I call this my active ageing session as the exercises included are for the general aches & pains in the joints and spine that come with age. There will also be gentle stretches to improve flexibility, as well as exercises to build core strength and improve posture to help with all the time we are spending sitting down during this pandemic. I'll be adding other exercises to challenge your coordination so look out for some fun exercises to work your brain as well as your body! Exercising regularly will improve both mind and body and I recommend you build up to doing your pilates workout at least twice a week. Take your time and do what you can. If anything is too challenging for you right now, don't worry, just rest and come back and try again when you're ready.
The session will be followed by a Q & A where from the comfort of your own home you can ask me questions, or just say hello whilst enjoying a nice cup of tea at a safe social distance.

Hi Rachel did this session this morning really enjoyed it. I have been doing the first and second ones for seniors so this one will be added to those. I also like the short ones especially an old one where you are in a very grand white room. Rachel, you are a great instructor. My third time watching your videos and I’m having an easier time walking and can walk a little longer.
I have foot and knee pain when I walk. My foot pain feels like I’m walking on broken glass and my knees feel like they might buckle under me. I’m 150 pounds overweight and with every step I feel like I’m walking through mud.

Hi -I am Nilu Sarin-lovely session-thank you.I have sciatica&cannot do the bending exercises .I also have had both knees replaced. Could you please help with alternative exercises that do not strain the knees or the sciatica-thank you.

Hello, I just discovered your videos. My problem is that I have developed very severe arthritis in both shoulders to the point were I need to get shoulder replacements. I can do very few exercices because I can hardly use my arms. My feet, , knees and hips are fine. Do you have any videos that focus mainly on the lower limbs? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Enjoying doing this class; it gets my heart rate up every time. I get to the stage when I think I cannot continue anymore, (especially that arm exercise doing circles, like portholes) but I always persevere and get to end without stopping. Thank you so much Rachel i have been following you since you started nearly a year ago. I have been very active all my life then in lockdown everything seem to hit me. Arthritis, Trochanter pain syndrome and Tendonitis and it didn’t end there! I found your amazing Pilates workouts and tried each standing one even though one leg is still weak. I am not as I used to be but with your help much stronger but will never be as I was but I try to do you Pilates every day plus a walk.

OSTEOPOROSIS is a condition in every bone in body at once, not in ''spots'' on the body
OSTEO ARTHRITIS is a condition in some but NOT ALL joints of body. they are 2 completely different types of health issues.
Hello Rascal, to claify - Osteopororois is a condition that can affect one or multiple joints in the body, the bones become more fragile and more prone to breaking and anyone who has it will have a different experience. Bodywiehgt exercise is key to building and maintaining bone density so Pilates is a great exercise method for that. I've worked with many people who have had in in their spine, their knees or their hips - it can be in just one joint or multiple joints and I would advise anyone worried about it to seek medical advice. In 13+ Years of Teaching I have mostly come across clients with osteoporosis in their spine or hip so I created some special workouts for people with osteoporosis on the channel.
Osteoarthritis is a very painful condition that is often exacerbated by bodyweight exercise especially when that pain is at its worst so I tend to recommend lighter workouts for this and more stretching for pain relief. It is the most common form of arthtritis and can also be on one or multiple joints . I just recently found your videos and I have done 3 of them and really enjoyed them. I have Parkinson's and I find Pilates very useful in combating my symptoms and helping with the stiffness and balance problems. FYI, my daughter, also Rachel (Peppin Parker), is a Pilates instructor in Birmingham and first got me started on Pilates for my illness. She was a Principal dancer with the Birmingham Royal Ballet and found Pilates very useful in her career. She trained with Alan Herdman, I will look forward to participation in future sessions. Good morning Rachel I have been doing your pilates for seniors for about 6-8 weeks and it has been life changing. I am 74 yrs "young" and have a total knee replacement plus Oeosteopena in the right knee so find some of the exercises challenging but have modified them to suit me. I live in Crowborough, East Sussex and finding something to tone up my body really helpful as we hit Lockdown 3. Love your friendly, informative presentation.

It feels like with each step, as I put my weight on the left leg, I have an "ice pick" feeling in the hip ... very painful. It is beginning to feel better and I was able to keep up just now! YEA! I just found your latest senior exercise & after completing it, I feel my entire body is completely stretched, toned & balanced. I think you definitely have a handle on what my age needs (I'm 72) without over-stressing it. Thank you for this! I love it! I'm 65 but I switch back and forth to your regular Pilates and senior Pilates. Is it advisable for my age to do your regular standing Pilates when I am able to do it anyway? I switch to the senior exercise when I miss a day or two. After that, I do the regular Pilates again.

Wonderful video, loved doing it, esp the arms exercise was really difficult not putting them down. how can these exercises help the heart or those with BP or diabetes, cholesterol. Because I dont perspire. They say brisk walking, cycling swimming is better for the heart and controlling your diabetes and cholesterol and ofcourse controlling your diet is also essential.
