Before Jesus died on the cross and rose again, people had to make animal sacrifices in order to have God forgive their sins. But after Jesus died on the cross and rose again, he was able to give His Spirit to believers and people no longer need to go through priests, tabernacles, or make sacrifices to have God forgive our sins.
