  • Prior to the start of the 1982 NFL season, Colts wide receiver Roger Carr desperately wanted to leave the Baltimore Colts following the departure of quarterback Bert Jones and the arrival of head coach Frank Kush. But when the Colts didn't trade him, Carr devised a plan to intentionally play terribly and break team rules so he would get his way. The end result turned out to be the craziest player exit in the history of the Colts franchise

It's a shame that people have basically forgotten about Bert Jones. He was way ahead of his time in terms of the style of football he played. Lets say he played in the 80's on a Bill Walsh or Don Coryell coached offensive scheme he would have gone down as one of the greatest QB's of all time.

If he played for Don Coryell in the late 70s/early 80s, Bert Jones might have thrown for 5000 yards in a season before Marino did in 1984.
Picture him with Winslow, JJ, Joiner, Wes Chandler, Muncie and James Brooks in that offense.

@@timothyweaver3344 IDK about that. Carr today would be moved to the slot and catch lots of 3-7 yard dinks and dunks because as we all know the slot is the only place white WRs can play in today's NFL, right? Then he'd throw a tantrum about being misused (which he'd be right about) and that would be that.

@@derekcabanaw1789 totally. I remember getting really excited to watch Jones play in an early season game against the Raiders or Steelers in 78. The Colts had virtually no offensive line and Jones was running for his life every single time he dropped back to pass and then he got hit and basically that hit not only ended his season but triggered an injury which really ended his time as an elite level QB as well as put the Colts in an almost 20 year tailspin that really only ended once they drafted Manning in 98.
The Bert Jones I remember had a great arm but also could read defenses exceptionally well and had remarkable touch on his passes when needed. Again, I would have LOVED to see him play for a team that would know how to utilize his talents. His career should not have ended at the young age of 27 (yeah, I know he played until he was 31 or 32 but his career all but ended in 1978).

I'm old enough to remember the Colts leaving town, but not old enough to remember how amazingly dysfunctional they were . Whenever we went anywhere on Sundays, my dad would listen to the game on the radio. At one point, he got frustrated during a game and switched to a music station. After a while, the DJ on the music station said that if you were listening to the Colts game then you don't need to bother switching back. Apparently an insurmountable lead had just turned into an absolutely embarrassing blow out. Another time, I remember the only Colts highlight they had to show on the local news that day was a punt return for a touchdown that got called back because of a penalty. It's sad that my dad died before the Ravens got to town.

@@chrisslaughter5552 When the Ravens first came to town, a lot of people had mixed feelings. But when we saw how the NFL treated Cleveland as compared to Baltimore we were all shocked. For 12 years after the Colts left, the NFL treated Baltimore like a piece of dog poo that the league once stepped in. When Cleveland lost their team, it didn't seem like the NFL could give them a replacement team fast enough. Cleveland even got to keep the Brown's name, colors, and history. In fact, part of the reason why the new Browns have sucked for so long is because the expansion team was rushed to the league so fast. Do I feel bad for Cleveland fans? Well as much as I have enjoyed watching them suck for so long (and I have), no fan deserves a team that is that bad. Do I have a problem rooting for the Ravens? No, not at all. Look, at the end of the day the NFL is a business that exists to make money. So we can't be surprised when they do things in the name of greed. All I ask is that if you move, change your team's name! The name and history belong to the fans of the original city!

The 81 Colts were the most dysfunctional team I've ever seen. They had a game against the Eagles where Irsay took over the play calling with the Colts down 31-6. Since he didn't know the playbook, he would talk to whichever QB (Bert Jones or Greg Landry) was on the sideline before each play, and so it went with the two QB's alternating each play until they had driven the length of the field for a TD!

Joe Thomas being fired as GM in January of 1977 was the beginning of the end. Thomas had a huge ego and he had the personality of a fig, but he knew talent, and more importantly, he was able to keep Bob Irsay largely at arms length from the team. Once that buffer was gone, Irsay's meddling became more and more heavy-handed and everything he touched turned to manure.

Roger Carr was the man. Im from Baltimore and I remember those days. Robert Irsay was the worst. Irsay destroyed the team and players reputation so he could move the team. The team kept changing coaching and getting rid of good players. It's Called tanking. Carr had not problem with Baltimore, just the mediocre coaching and disfuntional ownership. The biggest reason Baltimore lost the Colts deal was because the NFL helped Irsay to tank so he could move the team. So I looked up the stats online. roger Carr and cliff branch had almost the same stats. Branch was statistically the best receiver . Issac Curtis was good in1976, but not elite player. Sammy white was another top receiver that year. But in the end, cliff branch and drew Pearson were the 1976 all-pros.

He never said a racist comment, what happened is that running back Curtis Dickey (a very high draft pick) was taking plays off, and on one play, Dickey refused to block a linebacker who leveled Jones. Jones got up off the ground and spiked the ball in anger and yelled at him for not blocking. Joe Washington (a black running back who was on the team at that time, said that Jones was not and never said a racist thing during his many years in Baltimore).

@@karlcooper8460 I was a Colts season ticket holder from 1971 until they left in early 1984. I was at the game where Curtis Dickey left Bert Jones out to dry and get killed (as Curtis was a fast player, a track star, but his football IQ was not the best). Jones was killed on the play and when he got up he spiked the ball as he was upset. Did he or did he not say something (who really knows, as the fellow Colts players, all to a man, include Dickey said after the game he did not, he just yelled and said something to the effect, “f*** just do something, instead of watching me get killed, either block the guy or go out for a pass, just don’t stand there and do nothing”. Joe Washington (a black player who was on the field during this play, on many Occasions said he never heard Bert every say anything racist, and he was friends to everybody,). I am sure as years go by, the story gets blown out of proportion, but the day it happened, the story was, what the F is Curtis Dickey doing just standing there and not doing anything on the play and leaving his quarterback high and dry to get killed. Overtime people forget the play, and just remember Bert Jones spiking the ball and yelling, and as the year goes by, the yelling turn into racist comments. During the 60s 70s and 80s, they had something called the Colts corral. During the week Colts players would go out and meet the fans and have dinner or barbecues or whatever with them. This is why the fans love the Colts because they were real people. On many other occasions, I will be at the Colts corrals, and there was no talk, evidence or anything involving racial tension when the white Colts players were with the black Colts players, at these gatherings (Bert and Curtis were at these gatherings and they would be together having fun like two friends).
