  • Before the start of the 1986 NFL season, the Indianapolis Colts wanted to trade quarterback Mike Pagel so badly that they let him organize a workout with another team, the Cleveland Browns, while he was still technically under contract with Indy. This is the story behind the bizarre trade, and how everything played out in the end

At the 10:28 mark, you made a error: Hogeboom was NOT out for the entire season. He played the last three games (the Colts were 0-13, then fired the HC and hired Ron Meyer), all WINS. This is why they were not in position to draft Vinny Testaverde. Details are important.
The GM wanted to tank the season, but Meyer insisted that Hogeboom be allowed to play - apparently he had been healthy enough for several weeks.
And BTW, Hogeboom would have been really good for the Colts had he not had his shoulder REALLY destroyed the next season.

Pagel's finest moment as a Colt came courtesy of a freaky play. In week 8 of the 1984 season, Indianapolis was down 16-10 against the host Steelers with less than a minute to go. The official box score simply says it was a 54-yard pass from Pagel to WR Ray Butler, but it wasn't that simple. Pagel threw a pass that should have been picked off by Pittsburgh CB Sam Washington. But Washington bobbled it up in the air, and Butler snatched it and ran for what would be an improbable winning touchdown. Given the quality of his play--over his four years with the Colts, he completed just over half his passes and threw more interceptions than touchdowns--it was hard to imagine that he'd someday take part in an Alcoa Fantastic Finish.

    1. The Colts started off the 1986 season 0-13. They then won their final three games, costing them a shot at Vinny Testaverde. As I recall Gary Hogeboom came back to start those last three games.
    2. This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made another video about Tommy McDonald, who continued to practice with the Rams after being traded to the Falcons.

IIRC the Colts fired Rod Dowhower after those 13 losses, and brought in former SMU head coach Ron Meyer. Say what you will about him, but he got results everywhere he went, and getting 3 straight wins out of a winless team is Exhibit A. The very next year, he would be reunited his with his best running back from his SMU days--Eric Dickerson--as the result of a blockbuster 3-team deal that also involved the Rams and Bills.

This happened a lot more than is known of...
A lot of trades depended upon (at least sometimes) a player showing up.. working out and doing a physical or in some cases.. a drug test for the team that was interested.
Not sure it happened nowadays but if it does... it might not even be reported... or reported as often.
I thought the Steelers brought in Minkah to give him a workout or a physical before they traded for him... not sure. Could be wrong about that one.
But didn't they also bring Bettis in before they got him?

Part of the colts revolving door at qb post bert jones in 80's. Also lost out on elway a few years earlier. Got hermann from pu in that deal. Also had gambling addict schlister from tosu too. And tried to draft everett from pu as well even tho he was already drafted. pagel from asu was there because former asu coach frank kush coached there at one time. They also had the punter/qb blair kiel from nd. And trudeau from illini too.
This leads one to two conclusions: colts likes nearby and big 10 qb's.

Mike pagel career...49 td passes. 63 ints. 50.1 comp. %. 9414 passing yds. Started 16 games once as a colt. 3 times as a brown. One season as a ram. He was sacked between 25 and 40 times in four years as a colt. Strangely in four seasons as a brown or ram starter he was sacked just five times, all as a brown in '90 season. Which may lead one to believe the colts had a horrible offensive line even with chris hinton a perrenial pro bowler they got in the elway trade on it. Or he learned to get rid of the ball quicker as a brown. The guy plain and simple SUCKED.
