Ex Police Holden Commodore Makeover

- Its all about giving this former New Zealand Police car a well deserved makeover, taking it from a mild mannered Holden Commodore Evoke, to a head-turning, ex-patrol car star!
We tear down the body, lower the suspension, undo some of the Police modifications, fit front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a rear lip spoiler amongst other bits n pieces during this transformation.
Feel free to like, subscribe and drop a comment, Thanks for watching!
I'm not a mechanic or an engineer, I am an ex cop and love the new life you have given, and are giving to these holdens and falcons, both of which are now retired and replaced. The holden commodores (evokes, Sv6's etc.) may not have been the most beautifully put together vehicles ever made, but I remember working the frontline and they were the only brand and models that could take the daily punishment of hardcore frontline policing. Everything else we used or tried, tended to fall apart pretty quickly. Additive videos mate, keep up the good work.
@cavieman136. Good man, me too, former MoT cop from back in the 60s after i left the Army. I'm very Pro Police, and interested in Police, MoT stuff. I'm 83. Bob LH.
@@daddybob6096 Great stuff Bob. I was policing in the Taranaki in the 90’s. Left in 2000 after stints in Auckland and Manawatu as well. Was there when merger happened in early 90s. Miss some of those times.Take care Bob and watch out more of these videos, this young fella is talented. Best Paul C.
Thank you so much for the kind feedback, I really appreciate it! As you say, they may not have been the best car around, but, they could take a hiding and are reliable, and for that reason alone, I feel priviledged to be able to breath new life into these cars. Thanks mate
Awesome stuff! More ex Police cars in the future on the channel, thanks!
@@cavieman136 Thank you Paul, appreciate your reply. The merger was a huge mistake instituted by Banksie who was Police Minister at the time. Since then, dedicated Traffic Enforcement has declined considerably. I see this everyday on Wellington/Hutt Valley roads. Police did not want the merger at the time and still don't.Good night Paul. Regards, Bob W.
Almost makes me want to buy a used cop car. Almost. Good on you for bringing this nugget back on to the road and giving it the attention it deserves.
Go on mate, you know you want to….
You did a great job with this car with everything you did. My sons friend brought it in October but it came to a unexpected end just after Christmas when another car pulled out of a intersection on the highway and wrote it off
No way!!!! I’m so sorry to hear that, did your son’s mate get out un injured?
Some minor injuries Just really sore from the impact for a couple of weeks . The couple in the other car ended up in hospital
@@graemechristall5724that’s awful to hear, but glad that he’s ok. Rekon he’d sell it back to me for a part 2 rebuild?
Insurance company took it. It’s in the Hawke’s Bay
@@nonrasputin9260keep an eye out on turners mate, it’s going back there
Nice job, certainly turned that one around. Good to see it'll have a better retirement than its working life.
Hey thanks mate! I’m sure it will have years of driving ahead of it at a way more sedate pace… cheers
I've just found this channel, and I'm loving the content (especially as an Australian). The editing quality is quite underrated too. Keen to start watching the FGX series
Algorithm just got me too
I appreciate the feedback mate, thanks very much!
That was so therapeutic to watch. Another good one 👍
Hey thanks mate, much appreciated!
Finished product looks fantastic.
Thank you! Cheers!
What a makeover! Looks great 👍
Thanks heaps!!
Legend. I like the after market mods you made
Hey thanks mate, much appreciated!
Those VF Commodores are gorgeous, but so expensive.
Definitely my favourite shape, with decent features as well, I hear you regarding the cost, but, not so bad when you start the project with an evoke eh… cheers mate
Beauty. Seems to sit slightly low at the back though, did you replace shocks when the new springs went on?
@@falconlips5474cheers mate! The shocks were all good. Most people that lower these will go super low (sl) on the rear and super super low (ssl) to maintain the wheel arch gaps the same from front to rear. This was super low all the way round, which kept the chassis rail/sil parallel to the ground. The difference is subtle, but noticeable if you have seen a few. Thanks!
@@nonrasputin9260 Cheers for the reply. I have not seen any of them, just moved to Aus from UK so still getting used to Holdens being somewhat desirable Vs Vauxhalls which are generally not!
@@falconlips5474I hear you, and in this case, Holden is definitely an Aussie icon, and some would argue, these are the crème. I fully recommend getting one to get a feel for why they are so well admired down here
Well done, great job
Cheers mate!
Creds to you my bro… what an amazing job!!!
Thanks mate, much appreciated!
Excellent work!
🙏 thank you man, I appreciate it
Very nice job working on it man, car looks good!
Appreciate it!
great job man! love the story behind the car.
Glad you liked it! Cheers
Good on ya mate , gave that car new a life 👌🙌💯
Thanks mate! Everyone deserves a second chance eh, even a cop car!
Thats a good honest makeover👍
Thanks mate, I appreciate the comment! Cheers
algo also dropped me here. Nice vids. Subscribed!
Welcome and thank you!
Awesome stuff man! Keep it up
Thanks heaps mate, will do! Cheers
Classy additions m8 looks unreal- gotta be happy with that!!
Hey thanks mate, I really appreciate it! I was stoked with the outcome, it was the subtle things that made the difference eh, cheers
Awesome job 👍
Thanks heaps mate, appreciate it!
fucking great video mate. I've got a vf wagon and been thinking about doing a couple mods to it, this video definitely made me see all the great things I can do to it and most of the stuff doesn't even look too hard which is awesome
Thanks heaps for the feedback mate, much appreciated! It’s pretty cool how most of the sv6 bits and pieces just fit straight on, makes a huge difference! Good luck for your wagon, feel free to reach out if you need any tips
@@nonrasputin9260 Yeah that's heaps good thanks so much man. do you reckon that the SV6 parts would be pretty compatable with the lower spec 3.0L evoke?
@@isaachtmlcd Absolutely will mate, this car here was an Evoke, so all the add-on parts go right into place
Add some black rims
For sure, black alloys with the blacked out trim would have looked mean
@@nonrasputin9260 100%
Just needs another 2 cylinders now 😂
For sure man!!
Nicely done
Thank you! Cheers!
hey man, can you make and updated video how that ex police car is going and how long are you gonna keep it?
Great idea mate!
Looks mint !! What’s the name of that rubber part at 4:38 or where can I find one ?
Hey thanks mate! That’s a coin storage/rubber liner for the centre console. It’s a GM part, you can either order it from GM/Holden or get it from a wreckers.
Great video I've got one question tho how did you fix the drill holes in the dash where the computer an police equipment sat?
On the top of the dash, the screw holes are covered up by putting the speaker cover back in place, on the stereo surround/fascia, I have in the past plastic welded the rear of the hole, use a small bit of 2-part epoxy bog on the front and razor blade off the excess once its cured, then use a silver paint pen. Cheers mate
nice work. looks great
Thanks mate, appreciated!
if i had the money and the know how to attempt something like this i would. looks great now any other modifications your planning on doing?
Just start small man, and then work your way up to the bigger jobs, get a haynes manual, take things apart, clean them up then reassemble, you'll surprise yourself how quickly you can pick it up eh. Not sure on next mods, Ill see what the next car needs doing to it, so many cars to rescue, not enough time lol....
great stuff , the FG work was impressive. What's the next project?
There are a couple of interesting ones on the go now, will be putting an update out in not too much time… thanks for the feedback mate, much appreciated!
Did you use the Evoke splash tray/ drill holes into it or did you replace it with an SV6 one?
Weirdly enough, it bolted straight up without any issues, so perhaps the s2 evoke trays fit s1 sv6 bumpers? I did need to change out the guard inners though, or else a gap would be left
That's cool as fuck!
Kinda like the Caprice PPV guys in the states, importing Aus Caprice parts and bringing ex-cop/service cars back to life, and more into a civilian form
Thanks mate, much appreciated! I like the utilitarian feel of owning an ex-workhorse, there’s just something about it eh
Hey mate. At 4:23 what's that little cap you're using called? I've got a hole in my boot I really need to put something on top of it and that looks perfect. What's it called?
Hey mate, ah sweet, those are a a rubber body plug, or, also called a blanking grommet sometimes. If you're in Nz, you can get them from para rubber
Too good!!
Thanks mate, much appreciated!
Hey bro, bit of an ask. But for the steering wheel control(stereo) can you show some more detail on where it is and what’s involved on how to fix it. Just brought one today but want to get onto it asap hahah anything else you would recommend doing to bring it back to more of a civilian?
Hey mate, all good, just flick me an email with the specifics sweetrasputin22@gmail.com
Wow great vid! Were the DRL simply plug and play?
Thanks mate! The sv6 bumper loom plugs into the evoke chassis loom with no issues, the only difference is the left and right drl lines, so I wired in an aftermarket drl controller, which was pretty much plug and play, I recommend the Hella drl controller, very simple to install. Cheers
Being a cop car dose it have performance upgrades done to it like remapped ecu
Hard to say, but I do know it feels it runs better than a standard one. Possibly no speed or rev limiter? I’ve not tried it eh 😂
The rubber piece was usually chucked onto the tool trolley and used as a container for all the screws we removed.
That steering wheel loom was an absolute bitch to tap into. Not everyone on the line was able to do it good enough.
Wow! That’s amazing information, thank you! I often wondered where all of the rubber coin holders ended up, now it know! Cheers
Hey Mate, great content. Thinking of buying a commy for myself from turners. Where you do recommend getting the SV6 Parts and anything in specific I should look out for. Are they reliable? And is there market to sell them forward?
For parts and stuff I usually keep an eye on what’s at the wreckers or buy parts from wrecks and get them fixed up. These are reliable cars mate, and safe, plus, they seem to keep their value well. In terms of features etc, the Vf has loads of modern features, so they are a decent bang for buck. Cheer mate

Hey bro! I have this car!! Any idea what brand lowerinf springs you put on it? Car has come up really nice
That’s wicked man, enjoy! If the springs are still the purple ones I put in, they are superlows from Coopers. Cheers mate

missed opportunity to make the plate "FKESV6" haha
Hahaha 🤣
Looks real good! One thing to watch out for is water getting into the passanger foot well. On my ex-police car they didnt seal the hole good enough through to the engine bay so water would piss into the cabin
Ahhh snap! I know exactly the hole that you speak of, it’s in the upper left side of the firewall that goes into like a duct and as soon as it rains, it runs down the cable, past the mastic and under the carpet! Lol Thanks for the feedback mate! I am stoked with how it came out
Where’d you yet all your bodykit parts from?
Hey mate, mainly from wreckers and people parting out their cars online eh. I recommend when you get the front bumper, get a complete one with wiring etc, as it can be pricey getting one part at a time. The VE and VF sv6 side skirts are identical, so you can pick those up for next to nothing from pickapart
@@nonrasputin9260 cheers bro💯
Just want if u can show us how u wired ur drls on the front bar
Sure thing, I might chuck another video up in the coming weeks to help explain it, but what I did was use a Hella drl smart controller and all I needed to do was source power, ground, the feed to the drl’s in the bumper and a feed to one of the headlights (so the controller knows when to switch the drl’s off). It was pretty straight forward once you get into it eh
where did u get the car from website?
Try turners mate
Did your remote start work when you brought it mine doesn’t ??
Yes, worked fine for me. There are a few conditions that will stop remote start, first is, your car is low on petrol, the second is that there is a fault that needs to be scanned (I.e if you have a transmission fault code, remote start won’t work). Pretty sure there is a setting under access or car settings which also needs to be enabled. Cheers mate
Hey mate I’ve got the same car, currently trying to do it up myself, with the updated rear bumper insert did you need to get the full back bumper or just the insert to do that?
I changed the complete rear bumper. I’m pretty sure the black plastic insert will fit the evoke bumper, but, there is a shape change behind the rear wheels, kind of an extra body line that lines up with the sv6 sill. If you’re not changing the side skirts, you could get away with just the insert. Good luck man
I’ll give it a go, I’ve currently got the sv6 front on but how did you wire up the fog lights? What will I need to do etc, sorry for being annoying mate just can’t seem to find any answers anywhere!
Where do you source the body panels from
Just from wrecking yards or from people that are parting out their vehicles. There are heaps of bits that are common between the evokes and sv6’s, so I concentrate on the bits that are unique
Hey mate, i just purchased this car today lol
No way! Lol that’s awesome man!!! Are you happy with your purchase? I really enjoyed this build as the vehicle had a real story behind it, great car!
@nonrasputin9260 yeah man love the sv6 kit on it too, good seeing the exhaust was swapped and everything's up and running nicely
@@MyVictim that's so awesome! have you checked out the other video showing its origin story? ruclips.net/video/Dx9RjbrBE4Q/видео.htmlsi=csd38gRy4r3uC8GC I appreciate you reaching out! 👊💯
only difference is , the SV6 came with the 3.6 litre HO V6 , nice job though .
100% correct, so this 3.0 litre here is in more demand with the current gas prices 😂 ($3 a litre….). Thanks mate!
@@nonrasputin9260Filled up P'n'S Mangere for
They never used the 3ltr in Australian Police cars they were usually 3.6 or V8 and were retired at 3 years or 100,000klm, They never drilled into the body work either it was run under the door seals
If it was an Evoke, it was a 3.0...Australia wide...only if it was an SV6 then it was a 3.6...SA was the only state that stopped using V8s when the S2 VE was released. Not too mention change over at 100,000kms wasn't a thing because of supply...and the 3 year thing was a NSW and VICPOL thing....they have the funding to do so....that's why they use BMW and Mercedes and Audi's in their fleets now
So even the extra aerials etc were run under the door seals, not punched through the roof? That’s real tidy
@@nonrasputin9260 yeah mate...they do a very neat tidy job...
VF Evoke Sedan/Wagon had the 3.0 while the VF Evoke Ute/SV6/Calais had the 3.6
@@Jiichuuu__ I am quite aware but we were talking about police vehicles.

choice content bro. my last cop car was commie station wagon and the amount of excess wiring was mindblowing. i realize all the gizmo's they use, yeah just seemed more than the norm and i always had lil gremlins turning shit on n off every now & again. My favorite line wen ever i got pulled over was = ''come on guys show a lil love for ex cop car''🤣 cheers man
😂 😂 classic! I hope they let you off, I may try that! Yeah man, it felt like 50 extra metres of cable by the end of it, crazy! Thanks for the feedback bro, I appreciate it
How much did you pay for it at Auction ?? nice work by the way
Shucks, it was a decent deal at the time, about 2/3 the price of a non damaged one, but, there was a risk involved.. thanks mate, much appreciated!
@@nonrasputin9260 how did you figure out about the cars police history?
Great job on turning around the evoke, my complaint is that the repair work done to the roof, a bit of silastic and a cap. What a bodge !!!! i would have least filled in the holes and repainted the roof, your so called repair would only degrade your good work and if that car cameon the market for sale and seeing that type of repair, i would give that car a miss and look else ware.
Hey mate, thanks for the feedback. The silastic was just a precaution, as the “cap” was actually a blind grommet or, a solid body plug, which is designed for exactly the repair I used it for. There is no chance of it coming out or leaking. I know some people use filler on these holes, which I would regard as a far worse repair. At the end of the day, is it pretty? Possibly not, but does it do the job of permanently sealing the hole? That’s a big yes. I think the only 100% method is welding, light filler and a repaint. Cheers mate
