I am glad to hear there is still people who's first language is a celtic language. Here in Brittany our celtic language (brittonic not gaelic, same group as the Welsh) has been almost destroyed and hunted by the centralistic French state. We are still struggling to keep it alive and make part of our Breton environment. It's a shame.
This is one of my favourite ever Ralfy reviews. You waxed lyrical, you fell in love almost, you started off as a cynic (maybe), and finished almost qouting Shakespeare. You don't get this kind of emotional review anywhere else, cheers Ralfy.
Just bought a bottle of this at the distillery to share with my firstborn in 19 years time - arriving September. We tasted it in the distillery in the shop, they were so generous with their time - amazing experience.
I have to agree Ralfy, this is one of the most impressive bottlings from Islay I've had in awhile. The complexity and evolving nature in the glass is quite excellent. Expensive yes, but so much more satisfying than many other offerings at the same price.
Thank you very much for this superb review. I have a bottle in my whisky cabinet and I will open this bottle in the coming winter time. Keep on doing excellent whisky reviews. We whisky anoraks, we really need you. God bless our Ralfy!
Glad I found this review...i just won a bottle of the 4th version last week in a lottery from the SAQ in Quebec Canada. The price was steep, but the availability is so limited here I felt it was worth the purchase, as I have enjoyed The Wee Beastie, the 10 YO, the Uigeadail, and the Drum versions of Ardbeg to date.
Hi Ralfy I bought a bottle of the 2019, and because of the price, I could only pick up 1 bottle 🍼 of this expression, however since you loved this so much, I will pick up another bottle on my return to the whiskey shop, I want to open up a bottle and have one on reserve, so I'm going to open a bottle and see what you have given a 91 score, I love ardbeg in general, so wish me luck, cheers brother and thanks for the review of the 19 year old ardbeg!!!
I found this to be a very challenging malt at first. I’m halfway through my bottle and your bang on Ralfy, this really needs to open up for quiet sometime. Can’t wait for the second release.
So when I first bought a bottle of Ardbeg, I got home tried it and thought something was wrong with it, like it turned. I brought it back to the liquor store and handed it to the guy so he could try sample, he’s like YEP that’s Ardbeg. That was my introduction into peat I’ve loved it ever since, it grew on me
my first ever experience into peated scotch was a Laphroaig. i was about 30 and thought it was awful. fast forward 23 years and they are my favorites. Slainte!
My first experience with Islay Scotch was Laphroaig Lore. It was new on the shelf at one of my favorite restaurant bars. Holy sh**, it was tough to drink at first, but I started my Islay journey right there. There was no price for it at the bar yet, so I got the dram for five bucks. Something that you take a chance on and it opens up a whole new world of Scotch.
@@h1n1worm Ralfys reviews are different because he takes his time with the bottle, only publishes a video when he has done his research and gives the whisky time to breathe, experiments with water and thus has a different and more holistic approach. The score is the same as with Ardbeg 10 because the 10yo is an excellent malt, it is as good as the 19yo but offers a different experience and perspective on the distillate :)
@@christianstark2381 i know how does Ralfy do,thats why im here. I just mention other reviewers reaction on a particular malt, i dont compare classic 10 and 19.
I am really curious why the peated whiskies need less water for them to evolve better in the glass ? Any explanation any malt mate can provide would be highly appreciated 😊
This is obviously Batch 1 of Traigh Bhan, Batch 2 has literally just been released. On Ardbeg's website, Batch 1 cost GBP 169. I was told on Instagram by Ardbeg that Batch 2 will retial for approx GBP 200
Even though the Malt Mark is only one point different from Ralfys 10-year-old Ardbeg review, I’m sure that Ralphy might have given this an even higher score if the price was lower. I see a lot of people in the comments being put off by the price and some even assuming the 10 year is going to taste almost as good as this 19 year because the Malt Mark is so close... but price plays a part in ralfys ratings... from what I’ve watched. I’ve never tried the 19 year, but after watching Ralfy for years now, I’m sure the 19 would win in a blind tasting by Ralfy... I can just hear it in his attitude towards this bottle. Cheers everyone and enjoy every bottle you try, even if it’s garbage whisky (because bad whisky teaches us just as much or more than good whisky!!!).
Just blind tasted them tonight and side by side this makes the 10 year burst alive with youthful energy that is initially extremely appealing and pulls your favor. Then the 19 comes along and seduces your senses and just leaves you wondering: how did I pour a glass 1 hr ago and only drink half of it...
ahpadt excellent, I saw it in the background of a recent review so I know he has been mulling it over. Will be interesting to see if he likes it nearly as well as the ten.
We had a bottle of this rock up in a whisky order at Usquabae by mistake back in February. I've been calling it the Ardbeg 'Tray Bake'. My rule of thumb - if you've no idea how to say it, have some fun instead.
Cheapest I can find is $300 US in my area. For that price I can pick up one bottle each of Corryvreckan, An Oa, Uigeadail and a Wee Beastie with a little left over for some bourbon. :)
Ralfy, I’d like to see some blind reviews or a discussion about blind tastings. Bias and preconceived notions are a strong factor in slipping whisky. I’ve done some blind tastings and have been very surprised with the results
This is true, but I can definitely tell you that with years of experience and as you try whiskies in the thousands of dollars range, branding and pricing stops influencing you the way it does early on. When I first started my whisky journey, there was 'allure' to the 18 yr then the 21, then the 25... there was 'prestige' to the $100 price point then the $200 price point and so on... because I had never experienced those things before. But once you have had 35 year old drams, once you own dozens of 21 year old whiskies, there isn't much difference in 'prestige' of a 21 to a 12... once you've tried a $3,000 bottle you lose those rose tinted glasses when you see a $300 bottle. Yes, there is always SOME level of bias, but I can honestly tell you that as you gain experience you are able to overcome a lot of that and just recognize what's good and what's meh regardless of price point. This is why you consistently see those of us who do reviews become more and more cynical. We start praising the entry level malts more because we realize more and more how much diminishing returns there are.
Ralfy, have you tried the Thompson's 18yo Arran Chateau Labouade Sauternes cask? an 18yo Arran with southern cask finish which works really well as an aperitif. ive also spotted a few wee beasties at my local shop, think ill give that a try. great review as always

Did you buy it? Reportedly the batch 3 is a poor batch. Batch 2 being the best apparently. I have purchased 3 bottles of batch 2 and 1 of batch 4. I will skip batch 1 because batch 2 seems to be better.
I was lucky enough to try this during last years Peat Week. More than likely not the same batch. Tried with and without water, with time and without, and, I must say, it was extremely underwhelming, which is sad to say for such a quality make. It definitely opened up over time, but not enough. It gets quite expensive in the US, and I couldn't find myself spending that amount. I honestly think my taste buds were affected by the price.
Perfect IMO. I've been hired to many tastings and quickly realized 4-8 people is the perfect size group so that everyone feels like they can be involved appropriately.
Thanks. What we settled on is this. 7 people each put in $50AUD every month and then every few months we buy two bottles which are normally outside our budget. Next tasting is Macallan 18 yo and a Glendronach 18yo. Everyone gets 4x 25ml drams to finish each bottle but we only have two from each bottle at whisky night and take the other two from each bottle home in small 100ml glass bottles to drink at our leisure. Means we are not hammered by the end of whisky night and not appreciating the whisky. Building a kitty so we can get a $1000 bottle for Christmas.
Im into the wee beastie as I write this. The fruit flies have come and die as soon as they hit the glass. I wonder how many people have had this happen. If i open the Dalwhinnie, the same happens. Also, I just have bought your book and I'm in the middle of the process of reading and proofreading it. I will post what I found when I'm done, so it can be rectified in the next edition.
not universally... Serious reviewers like SV or ESD enjoyed this whisky. I think we have to aknowledge the fact that most YT reviewers are not competent ones. They might be excellent marketeers, talented entertainers or simply very nice people, but they are not necessarily reliable reviewers.
This whisky is absolutely excellent, I'm doing a review of Batch 2 shortly. It's my favorite Ardbeg. Some whiskies are divisive though. Your best bet is to find reviewers who have similar taste to YOU and mostly agee with your own opinions on whiskies you've tried, then follow them. Ignore all the rest because if they disagree with you, then their opinions are useless to YOU.
Scotch mist has nothing to do with cloudy whisky, it’s a joke where you say, look for something, say you can’t find it, then someone else finds it, they then say, what’s this, scotch mist

@@thewhiskybothy that's a "steal" since the uk release price from Ardbeg was 169 gbp. Found it at a local liquor store?
Is this the same as the traigh bhan? The box appears to be the same and they're both 19 years old. Theres a couple bottles sitting on a store shelf near my house but I havent gotten around to buying it due to the price (especially tough when ardbeg 10 is so good for 50 dollars)
Good question as the second release Traigh Bhan is to be released in the Ardbeg committee shop on Thursday apparently.
Отличный виски. Роза, торф, ....но в начале вкус лютой жгучей помойки, жесткого самогона. Только наперстком пробовать, или чайной ложечкой. Тогда вкус откроется полностью.
Ralfy try that Michter’s American you’re gonna love it!
Yep second that, Michter`s American is a distinctive, quality dram that any whiskey or bourbon drinker should try.
I can thing of a dozen Bourbon’s better at a lower price.
In my country it costs 207€, so that's a big NO from me; I can get 50yo armagnac with that price.
Well found a place that sells it by the sample (50ml) so I think that's what I will do lol
AWESOME - I am saving up to buy a couple - 1 for the shelf and one for the glass.
Buddy you need to try the Port Charlotte Heavily Peated.... We are trying it right now - if you like peat .... and at 50%.... sex in a glass.
I just finished a bottle of that a short time ago. Quite excellent I like it better than their Ocotmore expressions, actually.
slainte Mhath
Interesting and educational review as always Ralfy.
Would you consider reviewing Mannochmore 12 Flora and Fauna?
Also, I just have bought your book and I'm in the middle of the process of reading and proofreading it. I will post what I found when I'm done, so it can be rectified in the next edition.
. . . thanks for buying my book, but no M'more reviews planned.
Why do you always give Ardbeg a pass for not stating natural colour on the label? You don't excuse other brands.
Hi Ralfy
What kind of whiskey you prefer
Smoky whiskey
Smooth whiskey
Wits it like with coke?
Bhan
. . . corrected, thanks.
$300. Way to expensive. Ardbeg Uigdali at 1/5 the price blows this away.
Hey, the bell is calling. Ralfy's ready from the bothy. It's time for a nice review and a nice evening.
Unopened "investment" whisky. Leica's sealed in plastic wrapped boxes. Custom pistols that never leave a safe... hmmm
Amazing
❤️👍🥃
Has Ralfy been compromised? This sounded like an advertisement of a bottle that got universally disappointing reviews.
not universally...
First
. . . Verified !
Scotch mist has nothing to do with cloudy whisky, it’s a joke where you say, look for something, say you can’t find it, then someone else finds it, they then say, what’s this, scotch mist
Second
fashionistas LOL LOL
I personally hate Ardbeg :)
