I Bought A $400 Chevy Colorado! Is It Junk?

- I found this 2006 Chevy Colorado listed for $800 on craigslist. I drove about 2 hours to it, and was able to negotiate the price down to $400. In this video, I show you the trip up to the truck and give a detailed tour of it. Let me know what you think in the comments!
New title: robbing a dude for his colorado
WOW what a steal, I have a 2006 gmc Canyon, its the Coolant thermostat, changed mine and it went back to the middle
I have a 06 colorado but mine goes way above half running towards 240 degrees. I wonder how I can get it to go a hairline below half
Man my 2018 colorado V6 work truck is loaded with options. Chevy stepped up their game since O6
Yea for sure
i have a 2009 colorado and it usually sits around 3/8 the way up the temp gauge, maybe a little closer to 1/2 than to 1/4.
Nice find! Great deal for $400 cant beat that!
You should drive the 5 cylinder model. Much quicker. Lil power house
My 2005 GMC Canyon never goes over 1 quarter of the way up the temp gauge either
Update: I replaced the thermostat and now the temp gauge goes to the middle
Good Truck for the year it was made. Just needs some TLC and it would make a great truck for somebody :-D
Looks like your Thermostat is stuck in the open position, which would explain why your vehicles temp isn't reaching full operating temp.
Man, that Chevvy looks like a STEAL for $400!
it sure was!
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 call da CPS< you STOLE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@gertraba4484 yes its strange how certain people always seem to get good deals . and poor people like me had to steal the item to get a good deal on it .
He did steal it!
Wait til you have to replace the timing chain . Count on at least 18 hours labor time ! I know from experience . When that p0017 code shows , hold.onto your wallet .
Heck of a deal. I sell the engines out of those for more then 400$
Hey funny seeing you here!! Im a subscriber of yours
A Rural Vermonter - Qqjmcb 182 hey thanks man! I’m subbed to you! Haha small world. Love your stuff !
And i subbed to both of you 🤣
Hey Jay, I don't think you've gotten a deal like this one before haw!
What a coincidence, I watch both of you fellas a lot aswell.
That's a steal for that price in Tennessee those go for like 5 grand beat to death
Right? Same for your southern neighbors in Georgia lol I regularly see beat to hell f150s, s10s, rangers, and silverados for wayyy too much. "No lowballers I know what I have!"
@@themilsurpnerd9896 And people pay it too!
I doubt it
For real. In MD a Colorado like this would go for at least 5k+ like this... With 200k on it
@@rotweilerdc They do. I paid $5,995 for an 2001 Silverado with a 176,000 miles on it.
As a southerner, when he said 42° isnt cold I was like bruh
Last winter where I live we were getting -30
Ethan D. When Michigan gets -20°
-60 with out wind chill in Northern Minnesota
It’s not. That’s shorts weather. -Signed, a guy who lives at 7,000ft elevation.
I live in Florida. 42° really ain't shit though. I've told myself this pretty much "In Florida, it never gets cold enough."
Cel probably "coolant temp below regulating temperature " and your thermostat is stuck open or doesnt exist
that's what I suspect as well
I would be more worried about the airbag light or abs light. The mechanic said older ABS vehicles don't tell you which ABS sensors is alerting you.
I have an 04 and the temperature gauge never moves endless I'm on the highway
Really??? My thermostat was replaced over a year ago in the 3.5l i5 and it has run that cool since it was replaced... When I asked not only a mechanic that I have trusted for years but also a family friend who has owned and operated a Colorado from new to over 300,000+ miles and he told me that’s how his runs and he has had his since 06’.
@@frankmalpass8516 got 202k miles on my 04, water pump, and alternator just went out, other than that just clean fluids
I have a brand new in box thermostat for a 06 that if I can find it I’ll give to you if you pay shipping
I'll pay for it
@@hoboholer that thing is long gone lol
@@CDOUCETTE37 AHAHAH worth a shot my temperature is sitting a quarter the way up on my Colorado thank anyways lol
when I worked for gmc, I had a Colorado come in with a engine light and it needed a thermostat.
The 2004-2006 had an updated thermostat that had a higher temp.
Amazing to have a vehicle throw a code for a bad thermostat. And what a paint in the ass it is on these trucks
Yeah I have a Chevy impala. My engine temp stays on cold most of the time and it says “engine hot ac off” and it will kick on my check engine light and once I hook the code reader up to it it just says it’s a sensor issue. Chevy has bad sensors I feel like
Yeah my 05 had that issue and the cat was bad
Changed my thermostat. Took 20 min
I worked for a company who drove these as fleet vehicles. The temp gauges on ours ran between 1/4 and 1/2. The trucks never let us down. As they got older they would squeak and rattle but that's about it. The seats always wore out. We had the base models with auto trans.
The fact that this thing has all 4 hubcaps and a tailgate handle is worth $400 in itself.
Guessing the thermostat is stuck open.
thanks, that's what I was thinking also.
It's not stuck open. The stock thermostat is just really cold like that. I bought a new one for mine acdelco from rockauto and it's now 3/4 up the gauge
They changed the thermostat on the older ones to a higher temp
Yep, I just changed the stat in my 05 to a hotter one. It was kicking check engine light. Pull the throttle body and clean it good will help smooth out that idle.
replaced mine in my car 3 weeks ago.
Holy heck you really do get the most insane deals, hahaha.
haha, I just spend way to much time on craigslist so I see the deals before everyone else!
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 So is this the I4 or the I5? Honestly one of my "ideal" trucks... Nevermind you just said it's a 4 banger, hah. At any rate, I was going to say one of my ideal trucks is the Colorado with the 5 cylinder and 5 speed. I'm not a big fan of huge trucks, but I do need one. The I5 manual combo is just so appealing to me! Seems you def got a good deal overall.
@RSSS68 Camaro arguably more of a moron now than ever before now that he doesnt fix things anymore!
@RSSS68 Camaro Hahaha many thanks. :D
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 Yeah arguably he has gotten much worse. Much less info, when there is info it's reused from old videos, he slanders other RUclipsrs more without justification just for views, and yep he never shows you how to fix a damned thing just hawks products.
I got a Colorado the temperature sits at half that’s a little low
unbelievable low price, wow, really low even at Texas prices.
Texas prices are outrageous.
Curious what codes you’ll get off this.
The fact that its 4 wheel drive thats a good ass deal! I thought forsure it was 2wd
Probably should have paid closer to $3000 on that Chevy, fuel pump, water pump with belt, even the wires in the door to fix the air bag notice on the dash are all common issues for a truck with that many miles, which will still give you another 60K or more.. new rims, paint, or hub cabs and that thing will be looking sharp with under $1000... Great deal, really more of a steal, and well worth the money.
I would go Through and get Rid if the rust on the frame and body with a wire brush and other tools paint the frame so it would not rush again and change all the filters and oil and take care of it who knows how long it will last you
aww, spray it with CHAIN OIL and paraffin and call it a day
when i had mine, that temp guage was fixed with a new thermostat. i also repaired the airbag light by fixing the wires inside the door panel, they break with the opening and closing of the back door
Screaming deal, even with all its small issues. You can't get a 1966 Chevy truck for $400 here, let alone a 2006.
Damn ppl want 5k for one them trucks here in Michigan- with 233k miles on them even
The airbag light is due to a brittle wire coming undone on at the grommet on the extended cab door. Easy fix.
Or frayed wiring on the seat sensors.
Beautiful Autumn scenery you have over there..
Sensor not thermostat, maybe intake manifold gasket if you add water. Check your long fuel trim
Hell, I paid 2300 for one that was in WAY worse condition!😂
I've got a 2011 2wd Z71 version of this truck with a 3.7 in it. Mine was purchased out of Alabama last year with 62,000 miles on it and I love it.
Do you more lawn more and snow blower videos
Better check the frame really really good because frame rot is a real problem with these trucks
My 04 Colorado temp gauge is normally right above 1/4 like that, at about 185F coolant (according to the computer via Torque app). If you do replace the thermostat you cant get anything except 195F ones now, so up to you.
On mine the middle is about 205-210F, I never see that unless towing.
thanks for the info!
Good question for future purchasing.. I used to have an 05 Colorado i4 5speed swb 2wd and it would hit power reduced and I cut the exhaust out thinking it was the cat. And a "mechanic" at a tire place I took it too found a broken wire because one day at work it just randomly wouldn't turn over. I liked it but the power reduced problem that i could never figure out kinda soured my taste for another one maybe I got a bad apple... But just would appreciate any feedback on this to know what to look for common issues?? Nice truck gotta a good deal especially with 4x4 and a stick
I don't like those trucks but for $400 that's a pretty great deal.
For god sakes change your oil and paint those sad looking wheels!
My temp gauge dose the same in my 2004 colorado
Mine ad well
@@nathanthomasstickney8123 mine 3
I bought my Cadillac deville for 500 and mine running great
My dad has a 2008 Colorado with a frame 100 times rustier (West Virginia). Good buy
Those trucks are a nightmare if the timing chain goes out, but for 400 dollars that is a great deal!
Just replace it. No biggie
I mean if it stretches just replace it. If it breaks then say goodbye to the engine if it's an interference engine.
@@sschevmale24 Book time on a Chevy Colorado 2wd for a timing chain is like 17 hours. It is definitely a biggie.
4wd is even worse because you have to drop the front diff. GM's engineers must have been smoking some huge rocks when they put the 4 and 5-cyl Atlas motors together. Especially when they had other engines available that could have bolted right in.
@@DriveCarToBar bro any timing chain is not an easy job. Even the 4.3 v6 is a nightmare
@@sschevmale24 I haven't done a timing chain on a newer 4.3 but the old 4.3 from the 80s into the early 2000s was easy peasy compared to an Atlas motor. About the only bitchy part was having to drop the oil pan.
Especially fun is the chain for the balancers on the back of the 5-cyl engine...that you have to pull the transmission to get to! Maybe the 4-cyl has it too, not sure. The entire accessory drive has to come off the Atlas. It is a monumental pain in the ass. The Old 4.3, just pull the serpentine belt and take the fan and water pump off.
I didn’t know the extended cab came with the manual transmission and four banger, That’s what a need . My standard cabin Colorado it’s comfortable but not been able to load my groceries on the back makes me hate and love at the same time. After 198K miles still going strong and I also didn’t pay much for it. It will be my vehicle while I’m saving $$ for the Tacoma that I’m looking for. I like your style making videos keep it up.
In the past, I've heard the Chevy Colorado has timing chain problems hopefully you don't have problems with that.
Yea they do
I have a 05 - 4x4 cruecab needs Tim Chan it has 22222 miles has the 5 liter the team hand 1line over half way new. have a 95 ranger 4c temp hand 1mar over cool I left it running for 5-6 hour never rased with new water pump and thermste. i put both on Chevy to if the heater works it might be water pump the way it was making that squill noise when you start that morning
@@timroe7431 holy shit do you english?
Nice! I just bought a 2006 Ford Expedition for $800.00! Put the plates on it insurance and drove it home same day. I'm looking forward to putting a mild lift bigger tires rims Rhino Lining the whole thing and just go beast mode out on it!
sweet!
Don't forget your diff gears!! If you go up in tire size more than an inch or so it'll be frustratingly slow and get horrible fuel economy the motor will be constantly lugged. Nothings better than blowing the doors off ricers in a well geared jacked up truck👍my buddies hated lining up against my xj on 36in tsl's with 4.56:1 gears😎 lol! Its an old comment hope you got it built and are loving it
Hey i'm from Québec we're neighbors
Yep common GM, fuel pump connections rust out. Just did one for my buddy. Greased all that bare metal on the new pump with some WD spray n stay (kinda like fluid film). It can start hard starting and misfire from the pump leaking.
LS-swap it!!
^^^this
It's cool you got a deal on that truck for $400 btw I also found a Toyota Avalon on Craigslist for $400 dollars by my uncle it has about almost 175000 miles on it the issues it has is a rack pinion steering and fuel pump problem but other than that the car is in good condition and rust free
I’ve had mine for 3 years and that’s where it sits normally
Get under it and spray heat paint on the exhaust and fluid film on the other metal bits. You want to arrest the rust before it wrecks the truck.
Do you know that check engine light code is.
I think an O2 sensor and a misfire code
400$ is a steal...even if it had 170k. Anything that runs and drives with minimal issues is a easy 500$ bill
Keep the Colorado and sell the S-10??
I am pretty tempted... but I think the 4.3 will go longer than the 2.8
A Rural Vermonter - Qqjmcb 182 engine swap?
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182
Keep the S10, The S10 is better IMO, but hey I have an S10 so I'm partial to them. The Colorado has a more cheap thin look to it than the S10 does IMO. Plus you'll get more for the Colorado its newer.
S10 and Colorado same thing just different years.
@@rontownsend8235 No, their not.
Yes, it’s super common for the thermostat too stick open. Also, a code p0128 is set when it sticks open.
Needs a little work but you got a great deal on that Chevy
thanks!
I have the same issue on my 03’ envoy. “Low coolant temperature” which means the engine doesn’t reach regular temp
What??? Really???
Damn dude 800 would have been a steal how did you talk him down to 400 lol.
If it really runs at that cool of a temperature, that’s a great thing and don’t try to change it. Cooler the better
So ignorant
I owned an 05 i5 a few years back. Ran great for several years and then it randomly blew a coil pack. Even after replacing it and chasing everything I thought it could be, it never ran like it did. They're great beater trucks, that's about it.
Keep them chevys coming
hell yea
You're doors got a scratch
im not a fan of gm products but i have to agree it is a nice looking truck
I always thought these Colorados were all 5 cylinder and still remember doing an assignment in Engineering to show (on a drafting table!) that 5 cylinders minimized the residual shaking forces.
I've got one with the 2.9L 4 banger with the 5speed I think those are only available on the single cabs though
in the first years of the colorados, the 2.8l 4 cyl was the base model with an option for a 3.5l 5 cyl. I think for the first 2 years, 20004-2005, you could get a 5 cyl with a manual, but they didnt work well together and had reliablility issues, which meant after that you could only get a 5 cyl with an auto. in 2007 or 8 they went to a 2.9l 4 cyl and a 3.7 5 cyl. then in 2011 to 2012 they offered a 5.3 v8 as well as the 4 and 5
manelk8 I have a 2.8 liter 2004 my GPA had a 2004 3.5 the 3.5 is alot better then the 2.8 but I like both
@@brentmoura7274 they offered the V8 from 2009 on, mine is the 09 with the 5.3
The temp gauge is most likely reading correctly at just at or above 1/4. The 04-06s (and maybe 07s) had a different colder thermostat and the instrument cluster also reads differently than 07 and later. If you swap an 07+ cluster into an 04-06 it will sit around the half mark and with a newer thermostat and an old cluster it will usually sit somewhere between the 1/4 and 1/2 marks.
We have an old manual S-10. It has done more work than 60% of F350s out there.
The temp gauge always stays right at a quarter I’ve had two and put over 200k on them and it’s never moved from their when at operating temp
Make it a dually
lol
Put a ls in it if the engines junk
Air bag light is letting you know your clock spring is going out.
The engine light is likely a stretched timing chain. Very very common in these trucks. It turns the engine light on but there isn't hardly any noticeable drivability issues. Don't think about changing it!!! You have to take out transmission because timing chain is on the BACK OF THE ENGINE!!!! Stupid engineering!!!
I own a 05 Colorado and have replaced the thermostat, yours is stuck open it should sit at about 1/2 way up the gauge.
That seem like a pretty good deal for $400, with a little work it’ll pass inspection! I also live in Vermont and I definitely know how bad Colorado’s rust in Vermont along with other! Thanks for sharing
Thanks!
First video I watched that doesnt have snow in it.
It was junk brand new. Whoop whoop
You're most likely going to need a new thermostat, mines always get to half way, but mines the inline 5 though
That is a nice truck
Probably needs a new thermostat and fresh coolant. I have an 09 Canyon and the temp hovers around the middle. For the airbag light, there is a recall on airbags but it could be that the connector under the seat is dirty. Clean all connections and plug it back together. Alternatively, make sure the front impact sensors are good. Super cheap on RockAuto.
Congrats! Finding your combo in a Colorado is kind of rare. 4cyl extended cab with 4x4 and a manual? That's crazy! Doing the front brakes on these are a fucking chore (only the 4x4 version though). These were designed and manufactured by Isuzu for the developing country market like vietnam and other east Asian countries. My dad has an Isuzu I-350 version. You barely see any Isuzu ones in the States as only a couple thousand were imported.
Your setup is honestly the one I've dreamed about having. If I were anywhere near Vermont I'd offer you $500 for it lol.
I bought my 2004 chevy Colorado crewcab 4×4 for 500$ about 3 years ago now. She has just shy of 400,000 miles and runs like an absolute dream. I love my truck so much
Sheesh man that’s awesome. I know it’s 2 years later but do you still have your Colorado? Mines a couple hundred miles away from 200k and I’m just a little worried as I’ve heard that’s where they can start getting nasty
I love the fact it's a manual. I don't mind the roll up windows and whatnot. That's less to go wrong.
exactly!
Just above a quarter on your Temp guage is normal.
A steal alright! Your thermostat is stuck open. That’s why the engine light is on! Had the same issue with mine. It’s a pain to replace. Sweet build!
mine was very easy
There was a issue with the heads causing a miss upon a cold start. I had a 4 cyl that would miss when started. Drove it for 200.000 miles like that. The tale shift of the trans mission has a brass bushing that caused a vibration. Mainly at higher speeds. I loved both of mine .
Nice truck. Just don’t scratch it.
i'll try... but i won't be too mad if it gets scratched. after all, it was only $400
Used Chevy Colorado's are a steal. Super dependable truck without the Toyota price tag. Just picked up a 2008 Colorado for $6k with 94,000 miles on it. Plan to drive it to Alaska!
All I kept thinking is $400!?! over and over. I'd say you found a great deal. I live in central Maine and I'd say that rust on a $400 truck is not a big deal. I do think you need a thermostat BTW.
Good looking truck
I lost my engine at 197,000 miles, found an engine with 25,000 miles. Love my Colorado
The temp gauge on my Colorado goes up half way
As a man who's now done 2 timing chains on Colorados/Canyons there's a reason you see them getting cheaper and cheaper. Once that timing chain comes up for replacement it is an absolute bitch. Luckily they go 250k before needing one but when that day comes...my goodness
Definitely right about the temperature not being normal. It should be just below half. I had to replace my thermostat (like you suggested) and it was a pain... although I have the 5 cylinder so it may be easier for you. Basically a rubber o ring got warped and caught in the valve, not allowing it to close properly. I replaced mine a couple of years ago.
As said before, the airbag light is just a wire shorting out between the cab and the driver's rear door. It'll keep going on and off until the wire breaks entirely. Should be simple to solder back together if you can find the other half of it.
I have an evap leak in mine and I believe it is related to the fuel pump too. It has a random, multiple cylinder misfire which I think is related to the pump too.
Love mine at 146,000 miles, but I'm ready for a new truck. Mine also has burned oil since I got it at 49,000 miles. It'll go through 1-1.5 qts in 5,000 miles.
I’ve replaced my t stat, it still doesn’t run very high but it did help. I’ve had mine for over 8 years, I’ve cleaned the throttle body 3 times. I’ve talked to other Colorado owners that have had to do the same thing. They’re great for what they are.... a cheap little truck.
I had at 2008 Colorado 4x4 5 speed. Interesting trucks. Mine was an electrical nightmare that i was never able to sort out but it ran flawless otherwise. It met its demise with a deer head on. I miss banging out the gears and the 4x4 worked amazing in the winter time.
The check engine is probably a AP455 code. Needs a gas cap. Mine is the same color extended cabin is also where the 160000 miles look. 2007. My dash is the color of stearing wheel
It probably needs some belts and a thermostat and a oil change and a new filter and probably some other minor things and probably some new spark plugs and coils
It just so happens that my first car was a 04’ Colorado for 500! My mom worked at a nursing home and it belonged to a resident that couldn’t drive anymore so he said 500. All it needed was oil and a battery....and a massive detail
That’s normal that’s where my Colorado sets at
I know this is like a 4 year old video lol but I just found it. But yeah I had a 2005 Colorado LT with the I-5. It always ran kinda warm. The temp guage was at normal (halfway up the guage in winter) and slightly above normal (halfway between 50%-75% marks) in summer.
Perhaps the next video should be "Fixing gas leak", so one does not blow oneself up?..........A person I know has the same truck, same problem, garage charged 800 to drop tank and replace fuel pump... It is nice that you are talented to do that type of work yourself................
haha, that is the plan! I am planning to remove the bed to do the fuel pump instead of dropping the tank. From what I have heard, that is the easier option
Possibly the fuel leak is causing low fuel pressure giving you the rough idle when cold?
